Fitness and yoga for everyone Coast Fitness offers unique options at boutique studio Coast Fitness owner/instructor Debbie Duyvesteyn and manager/instructor Melissa Sloos have a specific goal: provide fitness and yoga opportunities for people of all ages, regardless of their previous experience. “Coast Fitness is a community; it’s a family,” says Duyvesteyn. “We want to get to know our clients, work with them and give them a positive fitness and yoga experience.” Options unique to Coast Fitness include hot yoga, aerial yoga, kettlebell training and a separate indoor cycling room with 24 bikes for spin classes. “We’re the only studio in Powell River that offers hot yoga and aerial yoga,” says Duyvesteyn. “Aerial yoga is a great way to build core strength and hot yoga is not only a physical, but also a mental challenge.” Other styles of yoga offered include hatha, yin, vinyasa and restorative. A staff of four yoga teachers and eight fitness instructors lead more than 30 diverse classes each week. “All staff members are certified,” says Sloos. “We all continue to take courses and keep up to date with new trends, research and technology in fitness and yoga, so we can give our clients the best experience.” Duyvesteyn says group fitness and yoga classes are designed so everyone, regardless of age, can achieve success, whether they are experienced, recovering from an injury or have never exercised before. “It is our job as instructors to help everyone reach their goals,” says Duyvesteyn, “whether it’s a yoga class, spin class, weightlifting class or a HIIT [high intensity interval training] session.” According to Sloos, group fitness can be intimidating initially, but options are available for participants to ease into programs and become used to the environment. “Spinning is a good place to start because the room is dark, there are no mirrors and participants have control of the bike’s resistance,” says Sloos. “It’s also a great, low-impact cardio workout.” Starting September 18, new spinners can build confidence and learn basic skills and techniques needed to be successful in regular classes during a fourweek Introduction to Indoor Cycling program. Other new events and programs for the fall include a sports conditioning program for youth, combined yoga/fitness program and six-week boot camp that leads to the Martinis for a Good Cause fundraiser in November. “All the money from the martini night is going to Friends of Powell River to help our youth,” says Duyvesteyn. Giving back to the community through various fundraisers is another important goal for the business. “We enjoy hosting unique fundraisers like the upcoming Spin-aThon with the Powell River Kings in February, Party for a Purpose in November2017and Bike and Brews R

Fall Fair celebrates 85 years

Catalyst Paper Powell River Division will be holding a full mill evacuation exercise on Friday, September 22nd at approximately 10:30am. This exercise will include testing of mill alarms and a full mill evacuation. The full mill evacuation alarm will sound for approximately 10 minutes.

Annual agricultural event returns with new leadership

First held in 1932, Powell River’s Fall Fair returns for its 85th anniversary this weekend under the leadership of the recently formed P o w e l l R i v e r Fa r m e r s ’ Agricultural Institute. Taking place at Paradise Exhibition Grounds, the annual event will feature vendors, live music and the ever-popular ex hibition hall with an enormous display of Powell River’s finest vegetables, fruit, canning, baking, crafts, art, photography and much more. “People just love to see the events that are happening at the Fall Fair,” says committee treasurer Ellen de Casmaker. “They are fun things you don’t see every day.” Items on display are judged in adult and children’s categories and ribbons are given out to the winners. More information on categories and judging can be found at the information booth at Powell River Farmers’ Market or online at prfarmers.ca.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

A host of agricultural-related activities will take place during this weekend’s annual Fall Fair at Paradise Exhibition Grounds.

In addition to food vendors and live music by Snag Alley and The Blues Busters on Saturday and Scout Mountain and Paradise on Sunday, there will be activities for children, including popular train rides, and animals, animals and more animals. “It’s a great family event,” says de Casmaker. “There’s lots to eat, the music is all nice, upbeat bands, the kids’ zone is always really popular, and so is the animal barn.” Local farmer and Powell River Farmers’ Agricultural Institute member Kevin Wilson will be on hand

during the weekend event doing homesteading and craft demonstrations of activities that harken back to simpler times. “The types of demos he is planning are old-fashioned, homey skills,” says de Casmaker. “People have lost a lot of those skills, such as how to save seeds or grow certain things. People look at it as being intimidating, but if they

can go to the Fall Fair and watch someone else doing it, maybe people will be interested in doing it themselves.” Accessible parking for the Fall Fair will be available on Myrtle Avenue as there will be no vehicle access from McLeod Road. The fair committee also encourages the public to bring some extra toonies for five chances to win $500 in a 50/50 raffle.

YOU GOTTA START SOMEWHERE.

Zero-waste goals Zero waste is the newest buzz word on the eco scene, but what is the road map to getting there? One way BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is facilitating the journey is by requiring all regional districts to submit a solid waste management plan for how they will reduce, reuse, recycle and manage their waste. The 10-year plans are put together by an advisory committee, approved by the regional district board, presented to the public for their feedback and then finally reviewed by the environment ministry before approval. Powell River is currently in the public consultation phase of its plan and is hosting a series of open houses throughout the region that the public is invited to attend. Key recommendations of the draft plan include: 1. Cleanup of the contamination at the former incinerator site on Marine Avenue and establishment of a resource-recovery centre with a waste-transfer station. 2. Increasing participation in city and regional district recycling programs by making operations easier for residents. 3. Increasing recycling by area businesses through encouragement, education and restricting recyclable materials such as cardboard and paper from the garbage. 4. Composting more yard and food waste by having a local drop-off site and curbside collection for homes in the city, and restricting the disposal of yard and food waste from the garbage. 5. Increasing the reuse and recycling of waste from construction and demolition projects by offering more recycling and

Developing an invasive species disposal plan to stop the spread by providing better disposal options. 8. Developing a regional illegal dumping strategy using a collaborative, multistakeholder approach. 9. Developing a regional disaster debris management plan so we are better prepared if a major disaster occurs. Be part of the plan by coming out to one of the consultation sessions or by going to powellriverrd.bc.ca and clicking on the Zero in on Waste logo. You may find that the executor you chose is no longer willing or able to act or you may have additional children or grandchildren who were not included in your original will. CITY OF POWELL RIVER REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE REVIEW The City of Powell River (the City) has a varied portfolio of real estate interests. The City’s lease portfolio has developed over decades and the terms, conditions and rates of existing leases for both profit and not-for-profit tenants vary significantly. The successful contractor may also be contracted to undertake ongoing assignments to resolve issues that arise between tenant and landlord, and undertake the work necessary to fill space when vacancies occur. If this relationship develops the work will be the subject of a second, separate contract. The review, tenant consultation and possible ongoing tenant relations work requires someone: • Competent in managing leases; • Familiar with lease documents; • Experienced with Powell River lease rates; • Skilled in maintaining quality tenant relations; and • Efficient time management skills. If you are interested in this contract opportunity, please provide a summary of your qualifications, your expected hourly rate and a list of anticipated expenses to: Kathleen Day, CPA, CGA Chief Financial Officer City of Powell River KDay@PowellRiver.ca Submissions will be accepted, by email only, up to 4 pm, Thursday, September 28, 2017.

Roses to the Brooks Secondary School student who has been practising random acts of kindness by leaving bags of coins on top of washing machines at a local drycleaner for people in need to do their laundry. To the lady with the three children at a local grocery store who paid for our groceries when our purse was lost, a boat load of Roses to you for your kindness and generosity. It is greatly appreciated. The purse has now been found. Rotten and smokey Raspberries for the smokers who leave their cigarette butts by the sea walk. A dozen bunches of Roses to the wonderful person who turned in my wallet at Powell River General Hospital. I was very relieved to have it turned in and your kindness is much appreciated. Roses to the creative person who keeps drivers entertained with the fashionable mannequins in Paradise Valley. Roses to the kind person who found a child’s pair of eyeglasses at Donkersley Beach and placed them on the boulevard just at the top of the beach. The little girl was visiting from Korea with a family from Maple Ridge; it was a huge relief to find them. Raspberries to those responsible for maintenance around Inland Lake. I am really shocked that such a tourist magnet could fall into a state of disrepair. You only have to circumnavigate the lake to see clearly all the maintenance that is required. I don’t know who is responsible, but it is a disgrace and disservice to the community. Roses to Heart and Stroke Foundation and BC Ferries for a new defibrillator at the Blubber Bay Terminal waiting area. Raspberries: Where is the pay phone to call the ambulance and 911? Also, a phone is needed in Van Anda as the old one was at the hotel. And please don’t take the phone from our Texada Island Airport. Powell River Villa home opener

Powell River Villa soccer club’s 2017/2018 season opened September 10 with a result the team and its fans can cheer about. Under new coach Chris McDonough, Villa defeated visitors FC Sagras 3-1 in Vancouver Island Soccer League Division 3A action. About 150 hometown fans at Timberlane Park enjoyed exciting and entertaining performances from Villa veterans and young, rising stars who played an attacking style of soccer that led to a trio of goals.
