Solar option reaches parity Valley Building Supplies helps homeowners reduce energy usage With hydro rates continuing to rise and homeow ners sea rch i ng for green, cost-effective ways to generate power, solarenergy systems are becoming an increasingly attractive option. “W hen people hea r about solar power, most think of off-grid cabins on Powell Lake or Savary Island, but the focus has shifted to include traditional grid-tie homes,” s a y s Va l l e y B u i l d i n g Supplies chief operating officer Vic Spreeuw. Previously, installation and generation costs combined were more than BC Hydro’s charge rate, but with that rate increasing annually, a point has been reached where those costs and rates have essentially reached parity. “You can do the math now and actually find it does make financial sense,” explains Spreeuw. “It saves money every month and will pay off when a home is sold because it is something real estate agents say buyers consider now.” BC Hydro rates increased by four per cent in April, the third jump in a fiveyear rate increase plan. The current rate for its step one consumption tier is $0.0829 per kilowatt-hour. “The average Canadian hou s ehold u s e s 10,0 0 0 kilowatt hours per year,”

says Valley’s general manager Brandon Kennedy. “As soon as you get out of that first tier, you jump up to $0.12623 per kilowatt-hour, and hydro is raising that every year.” While usage fluctuates throughout the year depending on the type of heat source, whether air conditioning is used and other family-specific consumption factors, homeowners can avoid paying those nearly double, second-tier rates during higher consumption periods by drawing power from Enphase Energy solar panel and inverter packages, which are currently available at Valley. “In a perfect world you want enough panels so you never go into that second tier,” says Spreeuw. “You could chop your bill in half.” Hydro bills can be analyzed to determine the appropriate number of panels required for each home. Each kilowatt generated by a solar-energy system is one less kilowatt consumers pay for on their hydro bill. “You buy a certain number of panels based upon your budget or what you want to accomplish,” says Kennedy. “It’s more affordable than people might think.” According to Spreeuw, in-

stallers can retrofit systems for older homes or incorporate them into new builds on any type of roof. Valley works with customers and an electrician of their choice to ensure a smooth process. Local companies Home-N-All Electric and West Wind Electrical have each installed systems already. “It does not cost anything to hook up with hydro,” says Spreeuw. “Smart meters already have two channels, one to calculate how much power is used and one to calculate how much net power you send back to the grid.” Homeowners use power generated from their system first, then draw from the grid. “If more power than they can use is produced, the meter measures the surplus that goes back to the grid,” says Kennedy. Homeowners are able to track power generated by their entire array of panels through an online portal, so they can follow how much their system generates on a daily basis. Reports indicate that, compared with hydro rates, a solar-panel system will pay for itself within the 25-year warranty period, says Kennedy. “They have been out and still producing good power far beyond that,” he adds.

For an example of what a small display system of solar-energ y panels can produce, go to bit.ly/ valleysolar. “We have a functional, four-panel system set up

CAMPFIRE SESSIONS: FOR THE LOVE OF BEER WHEN: 7-8:30 pm,

ferent beers as there are people enjoying them.” Started in 2014, Campfire Sessions allows local experts the chance to give short presentations on chosen topics. Previous sessions in the series included nature, food and children. “This series showcases the wide range of talent and expertise we have in Powell River,” says the library’s adult services coordinator Mark Merlino. As for the beer loving, Merlino says he hopes attendees will gain insight into craft beer and the process of brewing, including some real talk from Smith on what the job entails. “People think this job is all fun and beer sampling, when in reality it is sweaty feet and freezing cold warehouses,” says Smith. “Thankfully, it is beer we are making, which makes it all worth it.”

This weekend’s instalment of Campfire Sessions, a speakers series for Powell River similar to TED Talks, tackles a topic that has a lot deeper meaning than most people might think: beer. According to one of For the Love of Beer’s guest speakers, there is an abundance of material for the session’s central question of what makes beer great? “Beer is one of the great social catalysts throughout history,” says Paul Kamon, Powell River Tourism executive director, Sunshine Coast Tourism marketing director and an instrumental figure in the creation of Destination BC’s Ale Trail campaign. “Beer has been the beverage of the masses and brings people together in celebration. A lot of good times and memorable events revolve around beer.” Presented by Powell River Public Library, the session will feature several speakers with each taking a few minutes to present their expertise and opinions on why the craft beer industry has exploded in the province. “BC is quite quickly becoming a world-class destination for craft beer,” says Kamon, who is also director of business development for Vancouver Craft Beer Week. “It’s

Compostable plastic More power with Enphase not Solar Solutions fantastic All-in-one home

With “green” and “eco-friendly” products flooding the market, it can be tough for even the most discerning consumer to distinguish authentic from greenwashed. Compostable, plastic to-go ware and single-use bags are the first choice for many earth-conscious shoppers and businesses, but are these plastics worth the extra expense? The terms “compostable” and “biodegradable” are often used interchangeably. Essentially, both simply mean that something will break down into smaller pieces. They do not indicate that the smaller pieces are plastic-free, nor that they will become food for microorganisms in the soil. Certified compostable items are meant to break down to become a part of the eco-

system again, however, this is only possible in a high-heat-certified composting facility, not in a backyard composter. Many municipalities with composting programs are banning plastic bags of any type altogether. Composting facility staff are unable to identify and remove all noncertified compostable bags and are finding that certified bags that used to break down easily no longer are, meaning the recipe of the bag has changed. This all equates to plastic-littered compost. A further challenge of all plastic bags is they can become caught up in the primary processing machinery. For those of us who compost at home, having a liner for our kitchen compost container is handy. It keeps flies out and the leaks in until we become motivated enough to take the trip to the backyard composter. Here are some plastic-free alternatives for keeping a clean kitchen compost bin: 1. Line bin with newspaper, parchment paper or cardboard. 2. Rinse bin with water after each use. 3. Purchase compostable paper bags or pots. Some options available at local retail outlets include Bag-to-Earth bags, a plastic-free cellulose-lined paper bag that is leakproof; and the Green Lid, a compostable paper pot with a plastic lid. The lid should be re-used, but not composted. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.

1205 Career Opportunities

Your will is the last statement you will ever make. With the help of a financial advisor you can benefit from estate planning that reflects your values. Ask about naming a charity as a beneficiary on your RRSP or as a secondary beneficiary on your life insurance; including charitable gifts in your will; completing an estate plan that reduces taxes and fees. Plan today to make a difference tomorrow.

Toward good dental health How are your teeth? For anyone answering in the positive, chances are you are following the steps to good dental health: brushing, flossing and visiting a dentist. Bonus points if you understand the value of fluoride. Our daily dental activities were in the news a few months ago with new research that suggested flossing is a waste of time. We will come back to that, but for now, let’s stick to the basics. Brushing is the fundamental task for maintaining good teeth. It not only removes tiny bits of food but also bacteria that promote tooth decay. More i mpor ta nt ly, br ush i ng removes plaque that can cause gum disease. Ideally, brushing should come after every meal because the bacterial attack on teeth begins right after eating. At the very least, brush once a day and always before bed. Now to flossing. First, let’s put aside the apparent support for avoiding it. That research focused on 25 studies that compared brushing with and without flossing and found weak or unreliable evidence that flossing was helpful. Without going into the particulars, let’s consider the challenges. When they know someone is watching, people will take better

HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet care of their teeth. Next, many will not be flossing effectively so the benefits will be less likely. Read up on how to floss properly, or ask a dentist. And now to a most simple argument: How does it not harm teeth to have little bits of food pinched between them? Despite the contrary findings on flossing, professional groups such as the Canadian and American Dental associations, and others, strongly support flossing and cite other evidence that it prevents plaque buildup, gingivitis and tooth decay. Perhaps the simplest and best argument in favour of flossing is that it is low cost and low risk, so why not floss. You brush your teeth as you should and floss, so why would you need to visit a dentist? How often you

visit depends on your own oral health. The goal is to catch small problems early, which for many people means twice-yearly visits. In addition to brushing and flossing, other factors can come into play: smoking, a history of cavities or gum disease and poor overall health can all contribute to problems with teeth and gums, which may result in more visits to the dentist. As a parent or guardian it is up to you to help your children learn good practices and develop healthy dental habits. You have a big role to play in keeping your child’s teeth healthy and clean. Prevention starts at home with good eating habits and daily cleaning of the

teeth. Once a child has teeth they become susceptible to tooth decay, so be on the lookout for any signs of it. If you see any, head to the dentist right away; early childhood tooth decay must be treated quickly. If not, your child may have pain and develop infection. Good dental health does not need not be a complicated or difficult process. Brush and floss regularly, make sure you know how to do both effectively and see your dentist twice a year. Paul Martiquet is the medical health officer for rural Vancouver Coastal Health, including Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Seato-Sky, Bella Bella and Bella Coola.

Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast 2016

Approximately 30 members from RCMP, city police, BC Sheriffs Services and other first responders rode into Powell River on Friday, September 23, as part of the annual Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast. Constable Melissa DesLauriers represented Powell River’s RCMP detachment. The day concluded with a spaghetti dinner where more than $12,000 dollars was raised for paediatric cancer research and Camp Goodtimes through ticket sales, a silent auction and head shaving.
