Longtime Powell River Kings voice, digital-media specialist and awardwinning television producer Alex Rawnsley had been doing video work for Statham for years before starting as the full-time marketer. “On my first day, Josh showed me an ad for the Matterport 3D-imaging system and asked me to research it,” says Rawnsley. “It was a significant investment and the company didn’t even ship direct to

Canada. Later that day, we placed the order and made arrangements to get it to Powell River.” Matterport’s 3D-imaging system provides a true virtual-reality walkthrough of a home, along with a photo-realistic floor plan and 3D-dollhouse view. “It’s probably the most valuable tool in marketing real estate, ever,” said Statham. Every listing receives a comprehensive HDR photo session and HD promo-

tional video at no extra cost. “The bottom line is ensuring our clients maximize the value of their largest asset when it comes time to sell it,” explains Bailey. “We take that responsibility very seriously.” In order to achieve that level of digital curb appeal, a lot of care and attention goes into capturing every feature in a home, says Rawnsley. “The entire process in the home takes two to four

hours, depending on the size, and another two to four hours back at the shop for editing and formatting,” says Rawnsley. Statham says he was excited when Bailey told him he was interested in the team format. “I told my wife and she kind of laughed and said Bill and I couldn’t be more different,” says Statham. “I told Bill the next morning; he laughed and said his wife told him the same thing.” Bailey said despite the differences, partnering with Statham and Rawsley is a good fit. “I’m in my 60s and real estate is a second career for me,” says Bailey. “Josh and Alex are barely 30, but where we are all the same is in our level of commitment to our clients.” Statham says he was blown away by Bailey’s energy and work ethic. “Bill is older than myself and Alex combined, but he could run circles around us,” says Statham. “That’s one of the reasons I decided to approach him with this concept. I knew he would take this system and make the most of it.” To learn more about experiencing the benefits of the value-added listing system and enhanced digital curb appeal: • powellriverhometeam.ca

Royal LePage Powell River agents Josh Statham and Bill Bailey have decided now is the right time to form a new team. Along with digital-media specialist Alex Rawnsley, the trio is now the Josh Statham Home Team. “Over the past few years, I’ve worked hard to create a system for marketing real estate that includes highend, cutting-edge technology, professional photography, floor plans and 3D imaging, and a full-time media specialist to coordinate it all,” says Statham. “I wanted to share the system with another agent, thus the team.” Bailey says the new team does not mean clients will see him one day and Statham the next. “We each had successful real estate businesses before the merger and in that sense they’re remaining autonomous,” explains Bailey. “We each have our own client base, but now I have access to some pretty amazing marketing tools in-house.” The idea for what Statham calls “digital curb appeal” came to him while he was completing the Broker’s Business Planning and Financial Management course from UBC’s Sauder School of Business. “I had to make an indepth business plan for

André-Philippe Gagnon hits town Master impressionist makes first-ever appearance in Powell River Internationally acclaimed singing impressionist André-Philippe Gagnon is the latest presentation by Paul Mercs Concerts, a national concert promotions company now based in Lund. Gagnon is renowned as one of the world’s best impressionists and his show has been heralded everywhere from Las Vegas to The Tonight Show. “His uncanny ability to impersonate to a tee the singing voices of hundreds of our greatest vocal legends, along with his incredibly accurate mimicry of their mannerisms, culminates into an original, unique and very entertaining show,” says Paul Mercs Concerts owner Paul Mercs. Gagnon launched his career in 1985 at Montreal’s Just for Laughs festival, leading to him be invited to Johnny Carson’s late night talk show to perform a rendition of “We Are the World” where he mimicked the song’s many pop stars in front of more than 15 million television viewers. Gagnon has spent the past 30-plus years touring with his popular act. His upcoming show in Powell River is his first-ever appearance in the area. Gagnon is considered by many to be the number-one singing impressionist in the world. Often doing an impression per minute during his high-energy show, Gagnon’s roster of

Landfill weight loss Around the globe, entire regions are waking up to the reality that we are drowning in garbage. Instead of mimicking the closed-loop patterns of the natural world where waste from one system is food for another, we are using more than our share and producing toxic byproducts to boot. To get us back on track, places such as Metro Vancouver and our very own Powell River are declaring zero waste to be a longterm goal. Definitions for zero waste differ, some allow for burning of garbage while others, including Powell River’s, mean sending nothing to landfill or incineration. Landfills are not long-term solutions. Contrary to popular belief, burying organics (40 per cent of our waste) creates potent greenhouse gases rather than food for soil in a composting facility. Incineration, sometimes veiled in the glossy term “waste-to-energy,” is not the ultimate answer either. It is incredibly expensive, releases harmful nanoparticles and, perhaps most significantly, reduces the incentive to separate reusable, recyclable and compostable materials in the first place. Zero waste is one of the main drivers to our region’s proposed 10-year Solid Waste Management and Resource Recovery Plan. When drafting the plan, an advisory committee proposed key recommendations to reduce landfill from our current 458 kilograms per person per year down to a goal of 300 kilograms by 2027. We can all lose some “weight” by applying the waste reduction hierarchy to our

BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS

Currently, we depend on technology, especially in our work and student lives; technology has been integrated into our curriculum. We use computers almost every day to write assignments and do research, yet the question is: do we benefit from having constant access to the internet as students? A majority of students use their cell phones to listen to music, which is a great way to block out background noise and stay focused on studying or finishing schoolwork. Many students tend to make more progress in their work when listening to music. As well as music, our devices can often be used in class as a calculator or to quickly type something into Google search instead of using a computer. Not only can we use technology to help with work, but we also have academic programs we can take on the computers at school. It is an easy way to gain more credits or take courses not necessarily offered by the school. Although positive effects come with the use of tech-

STUDENT LIFE By Macy How nology, like everything, there are some negative impacts as well. Ours is the only generation never to have witnessed a time without internet. Perhaps that is why so many of us are anti-social and spend so much time on our phones at home. Although some may argue that is not necessarily being anti-social because we could be texting friends, we are still missing face-to-face contact. As well, if we are not careful, phones can easily become a distraction. Social media is often the culprit, as it can be addictive and students can waist plenty

of time browsing through Instagram or Facebook. Our addiction to phones can go so far as causing separation anxiety if our device is taken away. Although some students can work productively with a device, others may not be able to. Those who are not as academically successful may have difficulty staying focused on work if their phone is around, and may benefit more from having a ban on devices in the classroom. Not being able to manage our time on devices away from school can cause problems, too. I have stated in past columns that we tend to lose sleep by staying up late using our phones, which leads to a not-so-pleasant morning the next day. Technology can have many positive impacts on our student lives, but we must not give in to the addiction. Overall, the best advice is to monitor our screen time. Macy How is a grade 10 student at Brooks Secondary School.

Stuart Edward Slinger September 20, 1944-July 27, 2017

Stuart was born in Devizes, England. He passed away in Powell River BC. Stuart was predeceased by his mother Amelia, brother Leroy Slinger, father Edward Slinger (Janet) and his wife Shirley. Stu was a loving husband, uncle and friend and will be truly missed by all his family and friends. xoxo

Patricia “L ee” Hill

October 25, 1945– September 21, 2017

We mourn the loss of a wonderful mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. Patricia Lee Hill passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents William and Elizabeth Dawson, husband Robert Guenard in 1986 and Michael Hill in 2016. Lee is survived by her daughter Jennifer (Rob) Crawford, son Rory (Nicole) Guenard, brother Tom (Linda) Dawson, cousin Sherill (Bryan) Hannay, stepdaughters Lisa (Ron) Racine and Tricia (Bob) Alexandruk and grandchildren Britt, Talia, Colin, Chris, Kendra and Alyssa. Lee was born in Powell River and completed her schooling here before going to university in Vancouver. As a graduate of UBC, she spent the majority of her working career at the Bank of Montreal, where she was the assistant manager and a pillar of that organization. In Lee’s retirement years, she enjoyed quilting, reading and gardening, in addition to her involvement with Powell River Hospital Foundation and the early days of the Myrtle Point Golf Club. Lee had a tight-knit circle of friends whom she loved dearly and shared many memories with. Many of these friends sat around our kitchen table when we were young, were there when we accidentally set fire to the upstairs bathroom, were part of our Savary Island camping adventures and were our rock over these last few months. You are all part of our family and please know you are appreciated and loved by us all. As a mom, Lee was forever patient, strong and brilliantly supportive; the kind we were so fortunate to have in our corner. Lee was a beautiful woman with a lovely smile and a kind heart. She was deeply loved by all who knew her and will be terribly missed. Thank you to Dr. Rossouw, the nurses at Powell River General Hospital and home care; your support and care was excellent. A service will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, October 7, at Powell River United Church with a tea to immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Cancer Society British Columbia and Yukon.

FELINE’S FORTUNE: This bobcat kitten was recently separated from its mother by dogs south of Powell River. Fortunately, the dogs’ owner was able to rescue it. Because the necessary space and facilities for this youngster’s rehabilitation are not available at Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society, it had to be flown to specialized facilities at Northern Lights Wildlife Society in Smithers. A bobcat usually lives with its mother for eight to 11 months to learn necessary survival skills. They are nocturnal hunters of rodents, rabbits, birds and deer. During its time at Northern Lights, this bobcat will learn and practice the stealth and skills necessary to develop its legendary, 10-foot bobcat pounce and accompanying deathblow. Once educated, the elusive predator will be flown back to Powell River and released into the forest environment it was born in. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO
