Shop entices tea lovers Velma’s Candy, Tea and Gifts offers everyday gifts for all occasions Customers entering Velma’s Candy, Tea and Gifts often have similar comments to share with owner Velma Richmond after coming through the door. “People tell me it smells wonderful when they walk in,” says Richmond. A wide variety of tea from all over the world, including China, India and European countries, is responsible for the distinctive aroma. “There is something for everyone’s taste,” explains Richmond. “Everything is loose leaf and certified organic, which is very important to me.” Br a nd s av a i l a ble i nc lude Velma’s Tea, which is packed in-store, Urban Earth, which is blended in Powell River, and Silk Road, a well-known, Victoriabased company. “Silk Road’s owner is famous in Canada for her expertise, so I was thrilled to be able to carry her teas,” says Richmond. “She’s an expert blender and all of her teas come in tins.” With infusers required for preparing loose-leaf tea, Velma’s has everything customers need, including standalone infusers and teapots with infusers already built in. “As a specialty store, there are some fancy infusers here, too, such as floating infusers or infusers with cats or other designs on them,” says Richmond. “They are hard to find elsewhere.” Selections of teapots and teacups come in many shapes, sizes and shades inside the store. “I have choices of teapots you ...12 ITY ....... can’t find anywhere else,” says Richmond. “A lot of the time, black or white is the only option, but I have many colours and some with polka dots or animals on them.” Fill-it-yourself teabags are also available, with long sleeves that allow tea drinkers to determine the amount of tea they wish to place inside. “They’re nice because they allow the leaf to open up more than in a constrained, commercial tea bag,” says Richmond. “It enhances flavour and you get all the health benefits from the leaf when you brew your own tea.” According to Richmond, the quality of the tea is of utmost importance and having the appropriate accessories is just as necessary as the tea itself. “Basically, I have everything you need to make that perfect cup of tea,” she says. Health benefits are the goal for many customers who visit the store at 4660B Marine Avenue due to tea being high in antioxidants and having therapeutic attributes, says Richmond. “I carry therapeutic teas, breakfast teas, wellness teas, green teas and lots of flavoured teas,” explains Richmond. “Earl Grey is my most popular seller.” Mini samples are available for all teas as gifts or for customers unsure about buying a larger bag without a taste test. “Sometimes people just want to get an idea first,” says Richmond. Anyone looking for a specific tea is welcome to call or come into the shop to ask about it.

“I can probably find it for them,” says Richmond. “I do special orders.” Despite tea being the main aspect of the business, the store’s candy, chocolate and gemstones are still a draw for local and outof-town customers. Richmond carries a selection of chocolatecovered almonds, a variety of bars from Powell River-based MAD Chocolates and also makes her own candy in the store’s kitchen, including caramel sticks and Turkish delights. Richmond says more chocolate

choices will be brought in prior to Christmas. “I’m planning to specialize more in quality chocolate; I want to provide unique, healthy bars and hot chocolate mixes,” says Richmond. “I already have accounts with Daniel le Chocolat, a famous chocolatier in Vancouver, and Organic Fair on Vancouver Island.” A lso, the store’s gemstone jewellery, some locally made and others from Scotland and Ontario, includes bracelets and necklaces.

Paul Black Band plays McKinney’s Blues guitarist brings originals and covers to Townsite with help from friends McKinney’s Pub will be blues-rocking this weekend as Victoria blues guitarist Paul Black plays the venue Friday and Saturday night, along with some familiar faces. Born and raised in Terrace, BC, Black didn’t even pick up a guitar until he was 18 years old. After seeing a Stevie Ray Vaughn concert, he fell in love with blues and the instrument and has been playing guitar ever since. “I met Paul at my store,” says Rockit Music owner Rob Reed, who will play drums for the shows in an incarnation of Paul Black Band. “I did some homework on him and asked if he wanted to play with us. Paul is a killer guitar player. I heard him playing and was blown away.” The two nights of blues in Townsite will feature many of Black’s original songs, as well as some covers. Black and Reed will be joined by keyboardist and Powell River Academy of Music director Walter Martella, as well as bassist Todd Sacerty, who also plays in Wunderbread and David Gogo’s band. “It’s a very cool lineup and I’m really pumped about playing with these guys,” says Reed. Although he has played many times before with Martella, Reed says he is

especially excited to be playing with Black and Sacerty for the first time. He says due to the quality of the players on the stage the show will go off without a hitch. “It’s going to be pretty comfortable up there because they are total pros,” says Reed. Reed adds that McKinney’s is an ideal venue for blues rock shows, with its professional sound system and 150-plus capacity. Local blues legend Sam Hurrie has also been playing the venue every Thursday for several months to a loyal following. “It’s an intimate room and it has

Zero-waste tricks for Halloween treats

Monsters, skeletons and goblins may be lurking around every corner right now, but that does not have to result in ghoulish waste. A few simple tricks can lead to treats for you and the planet. Think outside the heavily packaged treat bags for Halloween party snacks this year. Veggie trays can feature pumpkins made of carrots and olives, shortbread finger cookies with almond slice nails and stuffed peppers with jack-o’-lantern faces oozing melting cheese. More macabre partygoers may enjoy a locally butchered meat tray fashioned into intestines or decomposing mummies, which can be seriously gross when ketchup from this year’s tomato harvest comes into play. And unless you want your grandmother to roll over in her grave, avoid disposable plates and cutlery at any of your freaky festivities. Gourds of all shapes and sizes are a timely addition to fall-inspired home décor. Lasting longer than leaves and flowers and more eco than their hauntingly wasteful plastic equivalents, you can pick up locally grown gourds from 10 am-12 pm on Saturdays at the Winter Farmers’ Market at Community Resource Centre, 4752 Joyce Avenue, and from generous neighbours. A cornucopia of ideas on zero-waste decorations are also available online. Once your spooky, art-carved pumpkin has cast its last shadow, feed it to the pigs courtesy of a free pumpkin collection for a local farmer from 9 am-4:30 pm at the

PROWLS RESCUE OF THE WEEK

LET’S TALK TRASH Town Centre Recycling Depot. Composting is the next best option, as it is food for the soil. Please avoid any skewers or non-organic additions to your jack-o’-lantern, such as paint or glitter, no matter how tempting these ideas appear on Pinterest. Those without a backyard composter can make use of Town Centre Recycling Depot’s free compost drop-off six days a week. Remove any residual wax stuck to the bottom as it is more than likely petroleum-based paraffin, a no-no for composting. Remember to save your seeds for roasting or for next year’s garden patch. May you and yours eat, drink and be scary this Halloween. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program.

PECKING PROWESS : This red-breasted sapsucker nest ling was approximately a week and a half old when it was found lying on the ground south of Powell River at Brew Bay and brought to Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS). The young woodpecker was flown to Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Victoria due to the specialized care available at the facility. It was transported back to Powell River two months later, healthy, independent and ready for release back into its native forest environment. Known for drilling evenly spaced rows of holes in its quest for insect food, a red-breasted sapsucker visits the holes for the sap and the type of insects the sap attracts. One way to know a sapsucker is in the area is by listening for the sound of their distinct and plaintive mews. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Trust the experts when buying a home Buying a home is one of the biggest investments anyone will ever make. That’s why it is in their best interest to trust the services of experienced and knowledgeable professionals to help them make the most informed decision possible. First, buyers need to find a house that suits their needs and budget. To do this, the reliable services of a real estate professional is required. These experts have a thorough understanding of the market and access to a wide range of homes for sale. They are also able to provide advice when it comes to the buyer’s tastes, needs and budget. Already found a dream home? Before purchasing it, contact a building inspector to make sure the house is in good condition and there are not any hidden surprises. A land surveyor will be able to provide a location certificate detailing the condition and

boundaries of the property, while a chartered appraiser will be able to determine its value. Before signing anything, find a reliable notary. It is not necessary to be on the verge of buying to consult one. A licensed notary can provide important information throughout the entire process, such as the various financing options available. Similarly, a mortgage broker will facilitate the home-buying process by negotiating with various financial institutions to find the buyer the best rate. And do not forget, proof of insurance needs to be presented when purchasing a home, so turn to an insurance broker for helpful advice and to find the most advantageous offer. Once the home is purchased, a homeowner can determine if it needs a little TLC to get it looking just right. If so, a number of skilled professionals can help.

A general contractor will complete even the most extensive renovations. Tasks that require particular expertise can also be delegated to certified professionals, such as a plumber for redoing the bathroom or an electrician when rewiring. Anyone looking for impeccable work that surpasses their expectations can call a painter, tile layer, window installer or flooring specialist. At a loss when it comes to the interior décor of the home? Call in an interior designer to help match tastes and budget with current design trends. Lastly, it is strongly recommended that new homeowners change the locks after the purchase. A professional locksmith will be able to provide a timely and reliable service that will leave everyone feeling safe and secure. Now, sit back, relax and enjoy the new home.

CROSSWORD

As students, we need a place where we can find a release from the stresses of school. Lucky for us, schools and the community offer programs and clubs for students to enjoy and learn from. These groups are incredibly important because they provide an outlet for our passions that we can choose freely to join. A big part of attending school is learning the basics in our core classes. School is preparing us for the life ahead, filling our heads with as much information as possible in hopes we will hook onto a subject and make a career out of it. Electives, on the other hand, are there to nourish our creative side and teach us skills we will use in our everyday lives. We are offered courses such as home economics, art, textiles, cooking, photography and computer programming, just to name a few. We should

STUDENT LIFE By Macy How be thankful we are gaining more knowledge as we take these exploratory classes. We can never acquire too much information, especially about a subject we enjoy; we will almost never find it boring to learn new facts and abilities revolving around an interest. For those who want a job that does not fit the mould of core courses, after-school activities can be quite beneficial. The community presents us with musical, recreational,

creative and educational programs. We can gain a lot from these pastimes. They often pave the way for our future careers, or provide us with skills to merely entertain. Not only do we learn new sk ills and abilities f rom t hese prog ra ms, we can boost our social lives as well. In a group or team activity such as soccer, hockey, choir or book clubs, to name a few, we have the chance to make friends. In groups, we find people who are interested in the same things we are. All it takes is the courage to strike up a conversation over a common interest for the chance to make a new acquaintance. Along with after-school programs, clubs are another great way to meet new people. The majority of schools offer a variety of clubs that take place over lunch. Clubs are a way to become part of a commu-

nity and discuss a certain subject. There are environmental clubs, political clubs, book clubs, sports clubs and even the option to create a new club. We can find strength in these groups and relate over agreed goals or shared views. With these programs and activities, however, comes responsibility. We must manage our time to practice and improve our skills, be prepared for the work that comes with it and attend meetings and classes. Unlike our core subjects, many of these groups are not mandatory, which means it is our choice whether or not we are present Students should keep in mind that we will not necessarily have opportunities like these after we graduate. We should take advantage of them while we have the chance. Macy How is a grade 10 student at Brooks Secondary School.

THE LAW CORNER Q: I was injured in a motor vehicle accident, but ICBC denied my claim and told me the impact forces were too minor to cause injuries. Is there anything I can do? A: Yes. ICBC’s policy on “low-velocity impact (LVI) claims” is just that, a policy; it’s not the law. According to the BC Supreme Court, “there is no legal principle to the effect that if there is no motor vehicle damage, then there can be no injury.” ICBC does not determine whether you suffered injuries or whether or not your injuries are attributable to the motor vehicle accident, the court does. In the words of the BC Supreme Court: “The presence and extent of injuries are to be determined on the basis of evidence given in court.” If ICBC tells you your claim is a LVI claim, you must object immediately in writing, as there are strict time limits that apply. Please see me for legal advice on your injury claim.

February 28, 1939 - September 23, 2017 Dorothy Tiessen passed away peacefully at the age of 78 years at Maplewood House in Abbotsford. She was born in Powell River, daughter of Patrick and Marion Behan, and had 11 siblings. Dorothy is survived by her children Earl, Sidney and Dallas (Jillian) and five grandchildren Steven, Anthony, Haley, Willow and Evan. She was predeceased by her husband Willard and son Dean. Dorothy was fortunate to be in the same care home as Sid in her final years. A celebration of life was held on Monday, October 9, at Maplewood House.

Theodora Maria (Thea) Saat July 18, 1925 - October 1, 2017

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Thea surrounded by family at her Kiwanis home. She was predeceased by her loving husband Anton in 1989 and will be greatly missed by her two children Tony Saat (Debbie) of Jasper, Trudy Davies (Kerry) of Powell River and her treasured grandchildren Brent (Kristen), Alyssa (Cody) and Justin. Thea will be remembered by all who knew her as a loving, kind and appreciative person. She was always optimistic, supportive and respectful of others. Family and friends were her passion and joy. She was truly an example of all that is good in life. We are so grateful to the Kiwanis staff, Dr. H. Strydom, home care palliative nursing staff and friends for the tremendous love, guidance and support for Thea and our family. We would also like to thank Father Dass and Stubberfield Funeral Home for their kindness. No service by request. Thea’s smiles and subtle sense of humour will be greatly missed.

SAVARY ISLAND DOCK ADVISORY COMMITTEE Call for Applications Some of you may know Peter from his critically acclaimed role in the local film The End of the Road, which premiered here in February. Peter is also known by his friends and family as a loyal and generous husband to Margaret (soon celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary), a loving father to Emma and Towagh and proud grandfather of Aya, Tianna and Ziva. From Peter’s childhood in New York to bush life in Lund, he has always loved the outdoors and has instilled this love in his children and grandchildren. He recently conquered Mount Freda and later hiked to Emma Lake at nearly 70. Peter’s social conscience developed early on. As an 18-year-old Columbia University student, he was intensely involved in the Vietnam War resistance movement. He continued to be community-minded after moving to Canada. Even when working full-time, Peter has devoted countless hours to volunteering in his community and with a number of provincial organizations. Among the many causes he has supported are the Hunger Project (1980s), organizing personal-development workshops (1970 to 1990s), men’s groups (ongoing), Powell River Hospice Society (current) and leading the successful Powell River Canadian Ranger Patrol. Peter has also played a leading role, including as president, of both the province’s College of Massage Therapists and its professional association. As president, he led a successful campaign to keep massage therapy covered under MSP. Having practised as a registered massage therapist for more than 37 years, Peter has probably massaged over one third of Powell River’s residents, and he is still practising today. In addition to his family and many professional and community contributions, the size of his homegrown organic vegetables and many firewood piles are a great source of pride and joy. Passionate, intense, (somewhat) opinionated, committed, active and involved, that’s our man. Love from Margaret, Emma, Darryl, Towagh, Rebecca, Aya, Tianna, Ziva and Roxy.

The Powell River Regional District is seeking one new member for a vacancy on the Savary Island Dock Advisory Committee. The committee assists the Regional Board in managing the dock and associated facilities. Copies of the committee’s Terms of Reference are available at the Regional District office or on the website (powellriverrd.bc.ca). To be a committee member you must own property on Savary Island, be 18 years of age or older, live within the Regional District boundaries and be generally available to attend regular and periodic emergency meetings. Individuals associated with a commercial enterprise that operates regularly from the dock or who may have any other conflict of interest are not eligible to serve on the committee. Interested, eligible individuals should send a written application explaining why they want to sit on the committee and what qualities and/or expertise they will bring to the committee. Applications may be submitted by mail, fax or email: Address: Powell River Regional District #202-4675 Marine Avenue Powell River, BC V8A 2L2 Fax number: 604.485.2216 Email: administration@powellriverrd.bc.ca Deadline for applications is 4 pm, Wednesday, October 25, 2017. Broad geographic representation of the island as a whole will be considered when selecting committee membership. For more information, contact Mike Wall, Manager of Asset Management and Strategic Initiatives, at the above-noted email.

AROUND TOWN

Loon Lake Race

A small but enthusiastic group of runners, walkers and cyclists participated in Powell River’s 22nd annual Loon Lake Race under favourable skies on October 8. The event featured seven-kilometre and 13-kilometre categories at Inland Lake Provincial Park. In a sprint to the finish, the seven-kilometre race record was broken by Brooks Secondary School student Chase Wilson, 16, who beat fellow student Will Rice, 15, by only .03 seconds. Proceeds from the Avid Fitness-sponsored fundraiser go to Special Olympics BC. DAVID BRINDLE PHOTOS
