Automatic and always open User-friendly options available 24 hours a day at Airport Super Shine Keeping vehicle exteriors sparkly and shiny became a lot easier recently when Airport Super Shine debuted its new automatic drive-through car wash. After opening for business three years ago with selfcleaning bays, vacuums and upholstery cleaning machines, the touchless LaserWash system was added in March to complement convenient services already available for car, van and truck owners. “We waited to get this machine because the technology has changed so much over the last couple of years,” says owner/operator Chris Orlinis. A computer measures each vehicle as it enters the wash, including
length, height and width, and adjusts accordingly to ensure a 360-degree wash from an appropriate distance. “The machine goes 18 inches off your vehicle all the way around to make sure you have a thorough clean on all sides,” explains Chris. Ma x i mu m a l low a ble height for vehicles entering the wash is 84 inches. For larger vehicles, or for anyone interested in taking a more hands-on approach to cleaning their vehicle, covered self-cleaning bays are still located on site as well. “All the bays have hot water, high-pressure wands and brushes,” says Chris, “and there is a cannon for
waxing your vehicle.” A control panel in each bay has different settings for washing, rinsing, waxing, tar and bug removal and tire cleaning. “We use all Turtle Wax bra nd product s,” says

An interactive discussion with the lead singer of a Tla’amin Nation traditional singing, drumming and dancing group is another step toward sharing the culture of the newly selfgoverning nation. Nunkum Dancers member Drew Blaney has been i nst r u menta l i n br i nging traditional Tla’amin songs to the forefront of the community. Discover Tr a d i t i o n a l T l a’a m i n Music, presented by Powell River Public Library on Saturday afternoon, is a chance for Powell River residents to learn more about the nation’s culture and music. “I’m really excited and I know a lot of the townspeople have been coming down to Tla’amin a lot more after the treaty signing and are interested in learning about our culture,” says Blaney. An informal discussion circle will be led by Blaney and he says he hopes those
who attend the session will gain a better understanding of the history of Tla’amin through song and dance. “Our culture here is alive and well and it’s connected to many, many generations of us being on this land,” says Blaney. “I hope everyone gets a sample of our culture because it’s very important for the outside community to see that.” T he g roup ta l k w i l l also touch on the history of T la’a m i n songs a nd Blaney’s work in bringing those songs back to the nation through his own research and songwriting. “The library wanted me to do this because I helped bring out many songs that were hidden in archives in museums around the world,” he says, “and that has helped me in my path of song composition.” Nunkum Dancers recently went back to their original name, which was used when the group was formed in the late 1990s. Most of the current group members are the children of the original group, says Blaney. “So it’s a new generation of dancers,” he says. Blaney says being in the group gives him feelings

THE LAW CORNER Q. My spouse and I are separating but we cannot agree on parenting issues regarding our children. Do we need to go to court to resolve the issues? A. Court should be your last resort after you have exhausted all resources, including counselling, mediation and information sessions. Mediation is a process in which a trained mediator assists you and your former spouse to talk with each other to find ways to reach an agreement that both of you can agree to. This allows for both flexibility and creativity in the terms of agreement that often cannot occur in litigation. Often people find this a more satisfying process than having a court make an order. If you would like more information on the mediation process, please contact me.

Captain Alan R. Mitchell September 6, 1925 - May 11, 2016 The Captain passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Marie. Survived by his daughters April (Gerry) and Jan, his brother Bernard Garner and sister Francis Garner, grandkids Kaela (Colin), Jenny, Sarah (James) and Gzerod (Stephanie) and great-grandkids Brandon, Kaden, Maya and Laeni. Alan and his family enjoyed living on Texada Island for many years. He was a Captain with BC Ferries and a proud piper with the Powell River Clansman Pipe Band. He spent his retirement years in Victoria. Alan also played with the Victoria Castle Carey Pipe Band. He was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy on a Corvette, The Oakville, in the North Atlantic. He traveled around the world several times as a sales executive for the Weiser Lock Company, enjoyed his own charter boat and diving business and kept busy long after his retirement. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A true gentleman to the end. Heartfelt thanks to The Lodge At Broadmead for their loving care of Alan. A Celebration of Life will be held in Victoria in July, date to be determined.
