Impressive RV and solar inventory awaits Top of the Hill Solutions provides multiple power and service options A v isit to Top of t he Hi l l Solutions is an eye-opening experience for anyone thinking of solar power for recreation properties and homes, or for recreational vehicle (RV) needs. It is no longer just a place to stop for groceries, lottery tickets or a freshmade sandwich; it is all that, and now so much more. In addition to the convenience store, Top of the Hill also houses the largest solar-energy-system inventory north of Vancouver, full-on RV accessories and appliances and, to top everything off, recently introduced and began selling a line of electric scooters and bicycles. Everything contractors and do-it-yourself vacation homeowners require to power off-grid appliances and equipment is available in stock, along with advice about this clean, alternativeenergy option. “A number of people can walk in to buy full systems and we will still have more in our inventory, everything from small to large systems; charge controllers, inverters, batteries and cables,” says managing partner Andy Vestering. Most sales and services are directly related to off-grid living, in locations without access to power, such as Savary Island, Powell Lake and other areas with no service. A growing grid-tie market also exists for homeowners with hydro connections thinking of green and renewable energy alternatives. “People are wanting their recreation homes and RVs to be able

to perform similar to their family home,” says Andy. “Top of the Hill can make that happen.” As a cabin owner on Powell Lake for the past 25 years, Andy has installed and tested many off-grid accessories, enabling him to share the acquired knowledge and experience with his customers. “I have lived it for years, so I know what people expect for offgrid living,” says Andy. It is common for people to think they need more equipment than necessary. A conversation with Andy often results in cost savings for customers. With increased demands for off-grid power, more battery op-

tions are required for customers. Top of the Hill stocks all types of batteries: golf cart, 2-volt, 6-volt, and L16s. All off-grid inverters are also kept in stock. Inverter cables are custom-made using a new bench crimper recently acquired for the process. “Inverter cables are expensive, so buying in bulk and having us custom-make them is more costeffective,” says Andy. For customers who still use propane, Andy has been working on and repairing propane fridges for over 20 years. Also, a licensed gasfitter and air-conditioning mechanics on staff service propane and electric accessories, not only for customer’s vacation

homes, but also for the RV market. Top of the Hill also repairs, services and sells RV fridges, hot water tanks, furnaces, water pumps, toilets, fittings, electrical plug-ins, cleaners, vent, vent covers and more. RV owners are invited to drop in at 6105 Lund Street and ask for a Top of the Hill corporate RV catalogue to take home and peruse at their convenience. “Top of the Hill is your new onestop RV accessory, parts and service centre,” says Andy. Top of the Hill is proud to complement its solar line with bicycles and electric scooters, including a three-wheeled mobility unit and two-wheeled versions;

each equipped with signal lights and headlights. The Gio-brand scooters have pedals in addition to electric motors, which classifies them as bicycles. As a result, a driver’s licence and insurance is not required for operation. “You just get on them and go; you can ride for 50 kilometres before needing to recharge,” says Andy. “We do the warranty work, if needed, and have all of the parts available in the service centre.” Top of the Hill Solutions is open seven days a week from 7 am-10 pm, with full service Monday through Friday from 8 am–5 pm. For more information, call 604.483.9006 or 604.414.4212.

A second, larger piece has raku fish mounted on driftwood from Savary Island. Savary is a favourite destination for Olfield to accumulate a background for fish, which are predominant in his art. Eghoetz says attendees of last year’s inaugural event can expect the same formal affair with some new twists this year. “We have made a few changes,” she says, “including asking artists for two originals each.” Eghoetz expects that after the successful first

event, even more art and wine lovers will bring out their tuxedoes and evening gowns this year. “For more than 60 years, our Rotary club has been contributing to the community,” says Eghoetz. “It’s fundraisers like this that allow us to continue to do that.” Tickets for A Taste of Art are $35 and include five wine tastings, canapés and live music. Additional tastings can be purchased. Tickets a r e av a i l a ble at Pebble Beach Design Studio, Crazy Quilt Cottage, from any Rotarian or at atasteofart.ca.

Art and wine lovers will be bringing out their finest apparel when A Taste of Art returns on Saturday, May 7. Numerous Powell River artists are contributing two original pieces for the fundraiser event presented by the Rotary Club of Powell River to benefit worthy local projects. Former art teacher Ed Oldfield provided items for the event last year and is again this year. Since his retirement two years ago, Oldfield has been concentrating on creating large and small raku pieces that are sold in nearly a dozen galleries in BC and Alberta. In the early months of the year, his kiln is fired up almost daily to produce approximately 1,000 pieces annually. “This is my year for colour,” says Oldfield. “Since January, I have done eight different colours and they have all looked great.” One of the pieces he is providing to A Taste of Art was still warm when Rotary

John Allan Cramb

February 15, 1933 - April 10, 2016 Allan passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver following a short stay in Powell River General Hospital, triggered by a mild heart attack leading to triple bypass surgery, from which sadly he did not recover. A l l an w i l l b e s ad ly missed by his son David (Liz) of Furry Creek, BC, daughter Karen of Powell River and son Scott (Lorrie) of Victoria, BC, sister Mavis (Paul) of Vancouver and sister Carol (Cliff) of Duncan and six amazing grandchildren he loved dearly: Ruth “Frankie”, Megan, Kaitlyn, Matthew, Donovan and Quinn. He was predeceased by his best friend and wife Jocelyn and his parents John and Ruth. Allan was born and attended school in Powell River, was an Air Cadet, and graduated in electrical engineering at University of British Columbia. He worked in England, Ontario, and returned to Powell River where he was involved in management of the pulp and paper mill. He was a loving father dedicated to his children’s health, education, sporting and cultural activities, frequently participating with them. Allan was also an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts, Powell River Curling Club, Mount Diadem Ski Club, Forest Wardens, Source Club and BOMB Squad. Allan was a very social person who enjoyed curling, lawn bowling, boating, skiing, golf, building models, fishing, potluck dinners, theatre, square dancing, motorcycling and flying. Allan had a zest for life, travelling near and far with Jocelyn. Ocean cruises, RV explorations and wintering in rural Mexico were some of their favourites during retirement. Allan will be remembered as a kind and compassionate person of the highest integrity, always ready with a joke and a story, and he will be missed deeply by relatives and dear friends whose lives he touched. The family appreciates the kindness, compassion and special care Allan received from all the staff and volunteers at Powell River General Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital. Thanks also for the tremendous support through phone calls, visits and emails by family and friends that Allan received while in hospital. They truly helped keep his spirits up. A celebration of Allan’s life will be held on Saturday, April 23 at 1 pm at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164 in Powell River. Donations in Allan’s memory may be directed to Powell River Hospital Foundation, St. Paul’s Foundation or Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon.

Dyson Gaudet

June 25, 1926 - April 4, 2016

Ruth passed peacefully in her sleep. She was born in North Vancouver and moved to Powell River to be a primary school teacher. She met her husband-to-be Jim Piper and married him in August 1951. Ruth loved her garden and enjoyed the fruits of her labour. Ruth is survived by her husband Jim. I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun over happy memories I leave when my life is done. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Powell River Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice. No service by request. Thank you to all our friends and neighbours for their support.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, April 16, 1 pm at Westview Baptist Church

John (Bobo) Bogoslowski June 14,1926 – April 9, 2016

We are saddened to announce the passing of our dearest dad, John Bogoslowski, two months shy of 90 years old. He was born on a farm in Grandview, Manitoba. After serving in the merchant marines during World War II, John went back to Dauphin, Manitoba to work and met the love of his life Verna. He moved to Port Alberni in 1951, then relocated to Powell River in 1952 and settled with his wife Verna to raise their family. He worked in the mill as a sawyer until his retirement at the age of 63; after that John and Verna enjoyed excursions to various places to visit and frolic with their siblings and family. John was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years Verna, his daughter Rosaline, his sons-in-law Pat Charbonneau and Paolo Ritossa, four brothers and four sisters. Left behind to mourn his passing are his sister Nell Archer, his children Irene, Linda, Bob and Mark (Emy), son-in-law Dan, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Bobo will be remembered for his years of service in the community; Knights of Columbus, where he took great pride in cutting the grass and maintaining the Knight’s of Columbus Hall at the old golf course. He and mom were also very well known for their luncheons at the hall; minor baseball and minor hockey, to name a few. He loved a “good” argument but, with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face, would say “just kidding.” John believed that if you treat people in a kind and friendly manner it would brighten their day. The family would like to thank Debbie Morehouse for all her loving support and help, Father Dass, Dr. Schweitzer, all the doctors and nurses in the emergency room and on the fourth floor and all the home-care support workers for taking such good care of our dad. A funeral service will take place at 1 pm on Saturday, April 16, at Church of the Assumption, with an informal luncheon to follow. May you rest in peace. Now you can be with Mama, give her a big hug and kiss from us all; we love you!

POWELL RIVER WEEKEND

CELEBRATING OUR FIRST YEAR IN POWELL RIVER

GARY

PETER

21 Degrees Mechanical is celebrating its one-year anniversary in Powell River with the addition of two new team members. First, company owner Doug Ingram and Powell River’s manager Peter Bordignon are pleased to announce the addition of Gary Slootweg to the 21 Degrees team. As a longtime Powell River resident and businessperson, customers may recognize Gary from his last business of 11 years, Powell River Carpet Cleaning and Heating. A certified gasfitter, Gary also brings custom sheet metal work into the 21 Degrees fold. "I'd like to thank all of my customers for their business and invite them to give me a call at 21 Degrees Mechanical," says Gary. “We offer the same great service and professional grade equipment." Peter, a journeyman HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) and refrigeration technician with gas ticket, says Gary is a great fit for 21 Degrees. The two men say they are looking forward to working together, with Gary's many years of experience and Peter's knowledge of new technology, this combination will serve the community well. "It's a big deal bringing a guy with Gary's qualifications to the company," says Doug. "He's a great addition to our team and we're really looking forward to working with him." Doug and Peter are also excited to introduce Megan Giordano as 21 Degrees' new office manager. Megan will be handling all ordering and scheduling in order to better serve customers. Megan’s previous experience in the HVAC industry, combined with her dynamic personality and passion for excellence in customer service, will be a great addition to the 21 Degrees family.
