Cleaning homes inside and out Equipment acquisitions keep Great Canadian Cleaners up to date
Since purchasing Great Canadian Cleaners five and a half years ago, Keith Allen has continued to invest in his company. He has purchased newer and better equipment in order to best serve residential, commercial and business customers throughout the Powell River region, from Saltery Bay to Lund, including Texada and Savary islands. “Not one piece of equipment is left from the previous owner,” says Keith. “Everything has been changed and totally revamped.” The latest addition is the Rotovac 360i, a machine that uses rotary vacuum heads to deep clean car-
pets. “It has a scrub brush that helps restore carpets, removing stains, deep ground dirt and lifting carpet pile,” explains Keith. “It attacks everything.” An average size living room carpet requires about 45 minutes for proper cleaning, but jobs can vary depending on circumstances and the number of rooms being serviced. Also new and available for homeowners dealing with rooftop moss problems is a spray-on biodegradable cleaner. Moss absorbs the green-friendly product, killing the invasive plant during the process. Great Canadian Cleaners return to rinse the roof after drying is complete, or allows
nature to take care of the rinsing. “The longer you leave it on the better,” says Keith. “It will go into the roots, under the roofing tiles, allowing it to be absorbed; you get a better result that way.” For exterior house cleaning, whether siding is made from wood, stucco or vinyl, Great Canadian Cleaners uses a soft brush and cleaning solution rather than a pressure washer, which can easily cause damage to the material and create water problems if caulking around windows is negatively affected. “We scrub the walls clean and rinse them off,” says Keith. “Whatever the siding is, we
can clean it.” Rather than waiting for green mold or algae to appear on exterior walls, some customers prefer to take a maintenance approach and have them cleaned every couple of years, says Keith. Gutters are also cleaned upon request, as are down spouts. “We wash down the outside of the gutters and down pipes and clean them right out,” he adds. Keith recommends pressure washing for concrete driveways, sidewalks and walls, and patios or other areas made out of bricks or composite material. A flat-surface cleaner, part of Keith’s always growing inventory of equip-

ment, is used in these circumstances. “It’s on wheels, you just walk behind it; that speeds the process up and does a great job of cleaning,” he says. Pressure levels are adjusted based on the surface involved to make sure the area is sufficiently cleaned while protecting surfaces from possible damage. “A lot of people have landscape ties around gardens,” says Keith. “We can pressure wash those with low pressure and not damage the wood.” Other services include: upholstery cleaning and stain removal; hard surface cleaning, including tile and marble; janitorial services

for businesses; furnace and duct cleaning; move-in and move-out cleaning; and residential maid services. “We clean washrooms or kitchens for customers or clean everything, whatever they want,” says Keith. Great Canadian Cleaners is available for appointments Monday through Friday or on weekends in months ending with a Saturday or Sunday. Emergency calls due to floods or major staining issues are handled as well. “We do what we can to get there and help out,” says Keith. We get satisfaction out of seeing people enjoying themselves,” says Allen, “and it’s a great opportunity for families to work together on building the karts.”

Organizers of the annual Powell River Soapbox Derby are calling on families to build their cars early this year and be aware of new weight restrictions. For safety reasons, cars need to be a maximum of 70 pounds in order to be entered into the popular races, which take place on the hill of Lois Street beside Sunset Park in Wildwood. “We don’t have crashes, but it’s always possible,” says Don Allen, Kiwanis Club of Powell River member and an organizer of the 69th annual event. “We’ve had a couple of occasions where people come off the ramp and they are wobbly, so it’s important to limit the weight.” The soapbox derby has become one of Powel l River’s most anticipated family events, a llow ing children and their parents to build and race customized cars. Last year, more than 40 entrants competed in the derby. “It was quite successful

We are renovating our older home and wonder what energyefficient heating system options are available?
A:
TYE LEISHMAN OWNER/TECHNICIAN
You could upgrade to a 98-per-cent natural gas furnace, or a high-efficiency gas fireplace. The most efficient heating system is a heat pump, and if you don’t have ductwork, you can install a ductless heat pump for great savings. Come down and check out all the choices at our showroom.

THE LAW CORNER Q. What is probate and how do I know if it is necessary? A. Probate is the procedure for determining the validity of a will and confirming the appointment of the executor prior to the distribution of an estate. Following an application to the Supreme Court of BC, and payment of probate fees, the court issues an estate grant to acknowledge that the will has been proved and that the executor is appointed to act. Probate is necessary to deal with estate assets valued at $25,000 or more and in cases where the deceased was the owner of real property of any value. If you need assistance dealing with an estate, please contact our office.

Roses to our first responders, paramedics and emergency department at the hospital for their speed, efficiency, professionalism and kindness. Roses to the great guy who found my radio, cleaned it and would not accept a reward. Raspberries to city council for voting to keep the flat tax and now shedding tears over the plight of our poorest homeowners and their families. Huge bouquet of roses to hospital emergency staff for the awesome and caring help a couple of weeks ago when I was extremely ill. I don’t see medical people often but was blown away by their speed and efficiency. Raspberries to all of the dog owners who don’t clean up after their pets, and let their dogs off-leash in public parks. Raspberries to anyone who has ever dumped stuff in the backwoods. Do you think those piles of garbage are okay just because no one can see them?
Get your thoughts published in the Peak Weekender. Email publisher@prpeak.com with your roses and raspberries.

Raymond Douglas Anderson July 1, 1938 - April 21, 2016
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our Ray of sunshine, after a valiant fight against cancer. Ray was born into a large family of 10 children in Bjorkdale, Saskatchewan; he was the ninth child. He eventually moved to work in an oil refinery in Kamloops, BC, where he met the love of his life, Coranne. They had four children and then joined Coranne’s brothers in partnership of Airport Lumber in Powell River. When they sold Airport Lumber, Ray and Coranne had various business ventures until they bought Aaron Vending and built the business up into Aaron Service and Supply, where their children became involved after moving home. Ray was a true family man, going on many adventures, including fishing, camping and road trips. (How many more miles Daddy?) Later, when his children had moved on, Ray loved to read on his swing chair on the deck, garden and pick blackberries to make his jelly; if the jelly did not set, we had plenty of syrup to go with his famous blueberry whole-wheat pancakes he served with a silly little jig. Ray took great joy in his grandchildren and recent summers spent at Hummingbird Cove in their fifth-wheel trailer; whittling sticks and shooting the breeze around the “grandpa-sized” campfire will live on in their hearts and memories. Ray left us to join his parents, Emil and Thea Anderson, his brothers Vernon and Willard and his sisters Joyce, Marilyn, Ruth and Anita. Knowing how much that family loves to dance, that is probably what they are doing right now. Ray is survived by his wife of 52 years Coranne (Tipton) Anderson; children Ryan (Brenda), Tannis (Trevor) Thulin, Bernie and Trevor (Jen); brothers Norval (Eleanor) and Gordon (Sharon) and his sister Jo Learmouth; and his beloved grandchildren Brad and Brett Anderson and Bryce and Tyra Thulin. Ray is also survived by Brenda’s daughters Tania and Tamara, Brenda’s grandson Kado, and many nieces and nephews whom he loved so dearly. The family would like to extend its warmest gratitude to everyone who helped Ray through his final journey with special care, gifts of knowledge, phone calls and visits. It meant the world to him and his family. He was a big man who left a big footprint in the lives of many people and he didn’t really want to leave us. He lived life to the fullest, right up to his last day. A celebration of life will be held in James Hall at Powell River Academy of Music, 7280 Kemano Street, on Saturday, May 14 at 1 pm. Donations can be made to Powell River General Hospital oncology department or your favourite charity.

With deep sadness we announce the passing of Bob at Pinegrove Place in Richmond, BC. Born in Vancouver, Bob served his country by enlisting in the merchant navy at the age of 15. At the end of the war he began a successful fishing career and he and his wife Joy settled in Powell River to raise their family. Bob loved his children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. He was always ready to lend a helping hand when needed. His kindness and warmth made him a favourite to all. We will all miss his big hugs and warm smile. Bob was predeceased by his wife Joy in 1998. He will be lovingly missed by his children Doug (Joan), Valerie (Lindsay), Ken (Brenda) and Gail (George), grandchildren Kim, Craig (Sarah), Caitlin, Garth (Ashleigh), Grant, Nicole (Jamie), Amanda, Michelle, Elisa and Colin and greatgrandchildren Khloe and Jeremy. Bob is also survived by his sister Dorothy Goyan of Quadra Island. A family gathering will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of BC.

1125 Lost
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Bruce, a sweet, gentle husband, father and grandfather. He leaves behind to grieve his loving wife of 51 years Sharon, daughter Loretta (Rod) Jamieson, son Greg Dale, grandchildren Spencer, Natalie, Jaryd and Madison and sister Betty (Vern) Wilson of Kamloops. Bruce was predeceased by his parents John and Ann Dale, brothers Tom, Norman and Donald and sister Agnes Martinsen. Bruce was born in Enderby, BC. At the age of 19, he moved to Victoria to work for CHEK-TV, where he met Sharon, who worked for CKDA Radio; they were married in 1964. In 1965, Bruce and Sharon moved to Birch Island on the North Thompson River, to work for BC Forest Service, in the protection branch. In 1972, they moved to Powell River to work for the Tipton family, owners of Airport Lumber. Before getting in with the municipality, Bruce managed the Westview Garden Apartments, did some carpentry work and drove cement and fuel trucks. He worked many years for the City of Powell River as a bus driver, Super Curbster garbage truck and flusher truck driver. Thank you to Dr. Charles Van Zyl, the hospital staff, and especially the staff of Willingdon Creek Village House One and Adult Day Program for taking care of Bruce. This honest, steady and patient man will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 7, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Vic Lupul Dad passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 29, just shy of 87 years of age. Vic was born in Edson, AB. He married Jean in Cadomin, AB, and when the coal mines shut down, they made Powell River their new home in 1952 when Vic began working in the mill. Vic was proud to be part of the volunteer workforce that built the old arena. Hockey was a big part of his life. When Civic Arena was built, he played hockey for Wilshires, then for the original Powell River Regals and Regal Oldtimers. He did not hang up his skates until he was in his 70s. Vic began coaching minor hockey and refereed when the old arena opened. He was a family man who was involved in all his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. He travelled all over the world with Jean, enjoyed fishing and especially enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren. Family always came first and he played a special role in his grandchildren’s lives. Vic was predeceased by his wife Jean and son Gary. He is survived by his children Terry, Sandra (Brian) and Corey (Gerard), granddaughters Katie and Alexa, grandsons Kevin (Jacaranda), Brendan (Willow), Torry and Blair, greatgranddaughter Hazel, his brother Walter, stepbrother Bill and their families. A special thanks to the palliative care nurses and home support staff; your care was the best. Thanks to all Vic’s friends, Fairmont Street neighbours old and new, regulars at Strikers and those who chatted with him on his daily visits to the stores and the mall. We wish to thank Powell River Kings and Regals for honouring Dad as the special supporter and fan he was. Thank you to our friends and neighbours for the food cards, flowers, visits and phone calls. It was heartwarming. We are honouring his wish that there be no service. Donations in Vic’s memory can be made to Powell River Hospital Foundation at 5000 Joyce Avenue, V8A 5R3, or prhospitalfoundation.com, or to Powell River Minor Hockey Association at PO Box 31, V8A 4Z5.
