Artist continues to offer professional framing Sunrise Studio provides more time to devote to customers at a time convenient for customers. A ll framing materia ls previously in stock at the gallery are available at the studio. “We have the same quality frames and mats,” says Luke. “Everything is here.” Luke also offers a limited amount of artwork printing for other artists, depending on the timeframe involved and availability. For aspiring artists, group classes comprised of six students are available seasonally for beginners or advanced students; oneon-one classes can also be arranged. Students are taught different mediums, from graphite to acrylic. “Most beginners are surprised by how hard it is initially,” says Luke. “The way I explain it to them is they are pushing and expanding their boundaries; the only way to do that is through hard work.”

Time away from the gallery, and more time in the studio, has been productive for Luke on the creative front, with two new prints completed: Purple Finch and Osprey Family. Both 2016 releases are available for viewing by appointment or at lukeraffin.com. “The gallery tied up my time so much I had no time to paint, now I have more than one going at once,” says Luke. A magnolia tree in his front yard was the inspiration for Purple Finch.

“I have to see something before I can paint it,” he explains. Osprey Family, which Luke started 25 years ago, features a backdrop of Powell Lake with a snag, long since gone from the original location, but now forever captured in print. “Osprey was an old painting I didn’t know how to finish,” says Luke. “I was cleaning up and noticed it in one of my cases.” Luke says he was going to destroy it years ago, but knew what to do as soon

21 Degrees Mechanical is celebrating its one-year anniversary in Powell River with the addition of two new team members. First, company owner Doug Ingram and Powell River’s manager Peter Bordignon are pleased to announce the addition of Gary Slootweg to the 21 Degrees team. As a longtime Powell River resident and businessperson, customers may recognize Gary from his last business of 11 years, Powell River Carpet Cleaning and Heating. A certified gasfitter, Gary also brings custom sheet metal work into the 21 Degrees fold. "I'd like to thank all of my customers for their business and invite them to give me a call at 21 Degrees Mechanical," says Gary. “We offer the same great service and professional grade equipment." Peter, a journeyman HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) and refrigeration technician with gas ticket, says Gary is a great fit for 21 Degrees. The two men say they are looking forward to working together, with Gary's many years of experience and Peter's knowledge of new technology, this combination will serve the community well. "It's a big deal bringing a guy with Gary's qualifications to the company," says Doug. "He's a great addition to our team and we're really looking forward to working with him." Doug and Peter are also excited to introduce Megan Giordano as 21 Degrees' new office manager. Megan will be handling all ordering and scheduling in order to better serve customers. Megan’s previous experience in the HVAC industry, combined with her dynamic personality and passion for excellence in customer service, will be a great addition to the 21 Degrees family.

Margaret (Maggie) Westie It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, Margaret (Maggie) Westie. She is survived by her children Robert, Hughie, Kathleen and Rosemary and their spouses. Maggie also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored. Maggie was born in Springside, Scotland, on May 29, 1924. She participated in the efforts of World War II, where she met her husband, pipe major David Westie. In 1953, together with their two young sons, they immigrated to Canada and settled in Powell River, where they went on to have two daughters. Maggie was a very special person who loved to smile and brought happiness to everyone she met. She will be lovingly remembered by many. A service to celebrate the amazing life of Maggie will be held Saturday, May 21, at 1 pm at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164, 6811 Alexander Street.

There will be a celebration of life for Roderic Wallace Fairweather on Saturday, May 14, from 12 - 3 pm at Campbell River Maritime Heritage Centre. Please join family and friends for this celebration of Rod’s life.

1930-2016 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mom, grandmother, baba and great-baba in the early morning of Wednesday, May 4, with family by her side.

Sean Robert Treloar

Mom was predeceased by her husband Alex. She leaves behind her children Ron (Dianne), Gene (Deb), Linda (Wayne), Wayne (Gayle) and Jo (Brett), grandchildren Rachele (Chris), Ryan, Craig, Keenan, Kyle, Reid and Haley and great-grandchildren Jared, Maddy and Dylan.

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beautiful boy Sean. Our loss is shared by so many who care and we appreciate those who loved Sean so dearly. Sean has walked up a stairwell to heaven to watch over and guide the hands of his parents Bill Treloar and Darlana TilleyTreloar. The love we all share with Sean is something irreplaceable and the memories we shared with him will never be far from our reach. Sean had a gentle, caring, humourous and loving heart. Words will never describe and express how big his heart truly was. All who knew Sean knew he had so much love to give and he had so much given in return. Sean leaves behind his brother Kyle and baby sister Courtney; he loved them and they loved him back unconditionally. He also leaves behind his loving grandparents Brian and Lillian Tilley, Lorreen Treloar and her partner Al, his uncle Dwayne, auntie Allison, auntie Janice, cousins and many more loving relatives. Sean left a big footprint in our hearts and we will always cherish his smile, his warm laugh, and his beautifully loving heart. Your baby Douey and sister Skee will miss you very much. I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be. A celebration of life will be held at Cranberry Seniors’ Centre on Saturday, May 21 at 1 pm.

We would like to thank everyone who helped and cared for Mom. No service by request. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice, if desired.

PEAK WEEKENDER

AROUND TOWN

A Taste of Art

Lovers of fine art and fine wine filled the Beach Gardens Resort and Marina’s Pow Wow Room on Saturday, May 7, for A Taste of Art. They viewed and purchased original art from Powell River artists, shared a glass or two of wine, nibbled on appetizers and listened to live music. A Taste of Art was a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Powell River. 1
