Volunteers from First Credit Union, First Insurance and Westview Agencies helped with trail maintenance on Sunshine Coast Trail as part of last year’s Community Impact Day. SPONSORED CONTENT

Growth helps organizations give back First Credit Union, First Insurance and Westview Agencies staff support non-profits What started as a pilot project has become an annual event. After a successful inaugural Community Impact Day in 2015, First Credit Union (FCU), First Insurance and Westview Agencies will once again close their branches early so employees can spend an afternoon volunteering and supporting multiple non-profit organizations. The branches will close at 2 pm on Thursday, June 16. Employees will then meet at various locations across town to volunteer for a range of non-profit organizations for the rest of the afternoon. “The purpose of our organization is to strengthen the well-being of our members and clients and make a meaningful com-

munity impact,” explains Tara Chernoff, FCU marketing and community impact manager. “Community Impact Day is our opportunity to lend a hand and show our gratitude to some of the remarkable nonprofit organizations that make an impact in our community every day.” Projects to be tackled by 88 staff members include building a greenhouse at Powell River Brain Injury Society, painting compost bins at Community Resource Centre and building a fence for Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association (PRTRA). During last year’s event, brush at PRTRA was cleared where the new fence will now be built.

“Our volunteers were in thick brush pulling out roots and covered in dirt from head to toe, but everyone was smiling,” says Tara. “This year we are helping with the next phase of the project.” Volunteers will also tend gardens at Willingdon Creek Village and Evergreen Care Unit, and play bingo and crib with residents. Trail maintenance work will be done again this year on Sunshine Coast Trail. “Last year was an incredible success, not just in terms of the number of projects we completed, but also for our employee engagement,” says Tara. “We give back to our community year-round, but the opportunity to work alongside non-profit organizations painting, weeding, cooking and

clearing brush for a few hours was a powerful way to connect with our community.” In addition to Community Impact Day, FCU and its subsidiaries give back thousands of dollars to the community each year through scholarships, donations, sponsorships, patronage and dividends. In conjunction with its 77th anniversary on Thursday, June 9, FCU paid patronage in excess of $200,000 to its members, the largest sum ever returned. “What we give back to our members and the community is growing,” explains Tara. “It grows as our organization grows.” For more information about Community Impact Day or patronage, readers can go to firstcu.ca.

Anderson became artistic director last summer. “Even though the name changed over the years, the purpose of creating something special didn’t,” says Anderson. Anderson says past academy dancers have been lucky to have trained with experienced dance teachers from all over the world, including ones who had worked with National Ballet School of Canada, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and many others. “Growing up dancing in that era felt magical,” says Anderson, “and that rush is still felt when our dancers step on the Evergreen Theatre stage, taking in the whole sensational

A longtime student of Laszlo Tamasik Dance Academy has spent the past year revitalizing the historic school that has more than 25 years of history in Powell River. Artistic director Paige Anderson started at the academy when she was three years old and says she was immediately hooked on dance. A year ago, Tamasik asked her to take over the academy as he was ready to retire. “I wanted to bring the school back to what it once was,” says Anderson. “We have had the most amazing first year since the revitalization and can’t wait to continue the legacy of dance here in Powell River.” The academy’s annual recital, taking place on Saturday night with the theme: Tonight’s Gonna Be a Good Night, will feature ballet, tap, contemporary, lyrical, tap and musical theatre from its dancers aged three to 18. “Many lifetime friendships and memories are made at the academy,” says Anderson. The academy, which Tamasik took over in 1989, has changed its name a few times over the years, from Powell River School of Dance, to Back Door Studios, back to Powell River School of Dance, to Laszlo Tamasik School of Dance and then finally Laszlo Ta ma si k Da nce Academy when

Jean Scales Lamont February 15, 1935 – June 3, 2015

Jean passed away peacefully on Friday, June 3. She was one of five children born to Diana and Jack Henderson in Kilmarnock, Scotland. Jean was predeceased by her loving husband Jim and son Gordon, parents Diana and Jack, as well as brother’s Frank and Jim and sister Helen. Jean is survived by her son Derek (Loreen), daughter Diana (Jen), grandchildren Adyn, Megan, Kate (Rob), Cory, Marissa and Samantha and great-grandchildren Jordyn, Justin, Emma and Summer. Jean grew up in Scotland working in the family business in Shortlees, attended a year of nursing college and won the Princess of Kilmarnock beauty pageant before embarking on a travel adventure to Canada. Her life changed forever in Powell River when she met the love of her life, Jimmy Lamont, who filled her life with love, laughter and kindness. They became engaged within a month and married a year later in Scotland before returning to Canada to raise their three children. Jean’s life was devoted entirely to her family. She never missed any events Gordon, Derek and Diana were involved in. Many weekends were spent standing in stormy weather on the soccer sidelines, cheering on her children and volunteering time to causes that enriched her kids’ lives. Her loving heart and gentle hand surrounded her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews from the moment they were born. Jean’s growing family was always her pride and joy, even from afar she proudly spoke of and showed pictures of her beautiful family. Jean worked at Beach Gardens Resort and volunteered for many years with St. Andrews Ladies Club and Villa Soccer Club. Many babies in Powell River were in receipt of her beautiful knitted sweaters, given in the baby layettes from the Scotch Club to families in need. Jean was the friend that you could rely on. To all those friends in need, Jean would drive to medical appointments, help with grocery shopping and weekly outings for lunch and around town just to brighten someone’s day; a kindness that was also shown to her in the last few years by some lovely ladies. Jean did not help people for the thanks, but simply because she was a kind, compassionate woman who put the needs of others before herself. Even in her last months, she was full of smiles, jokes, kind words and laughter for her loved ones and all those around. Her memories may have been fading, but her gracious and loving spirit shone bright. A service will be held at Powell River United Church on Tuesday, June 14, at 2 pm; a tea will follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Alzheimer Society of Canada. remember your family or friend

CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR

Doreen Meredith Wednesday, June 29, 11 am Powell River United Church, 6932 Crofton Street Refreshments and time to visit following the service in Trinity Hall

Gerald Glen Young “Gerry” March 24, 1946 – June 4, 2016 70 years

He did not go Gentle into that Good Night. Our beautiful man has gone. Gerry was born in Powell River to Reg and Florence Young (Harrison). He was predeceased by his parents and stepfather Orald Harrison. Gerry was also predeceased by his son Christopher and is survived by his wife Pat, daughter Victoria, son-in-law Steve Simons and grandchildren Shelby and Christian, all of Victoria, BC; his brother Barry and wife Lyn of Parksville; nieces Jacquie and Kelly and their families; and also many cousins throughout the world. In 1969, Gerry graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry degree. He began work with Crown Zellerbach as an Engineering Assistant in Sandspit, Queen Charlotte Islands, and retired from TimberWest as Vice-President of Operations in 2007. Gerry loved his work, especially his years in “the woods.” He loved the people with whom he worked. He enjoyed his golf – he was a Founding Member of Crown Isle Golf Club – and he and Pat spent many years golfing around North America. He had a passion for reading, he could tell you everything you needed (not necessarily wanted) to know about Winston Churchill, much to the chagrin of his golfing partners. His ability to read in his retirement was cut short however, as he became victim to dementia, Lewy Bodies and Vascular, along with seizures. Gerry entered care January 2, 2013. He died at Glacier View Lodge, Special Care Unit on Saturday, June 4, 2016. Special thanks must go to Dr. Doug Anderson, his wonderful friends Paul Berg and Steve Lackey, and the Special Care Unit at Glacier View Lodge. If you care to remember Gerry, donations to Glacier View Lodge, Special Care Unit, Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC, St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation or Alzheimer Society of BC would be greatly appreciated. A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held on Monday, June 13, at 1 pm from Comox Valley Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtenay, with a reception to follow in the “Garden Room and Outdoor Patio” of the Funeral Home.

Grant Ernest Rekve “Aka-G” November 4, 1944 - June 1, 2016

Grant passed away peacefully with family by his side at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. He was predeceased by his father Ingvald Rekve and mother Irene Rekve as well as his son Chad. Grant is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Verna Rekve and daughter Darlene (Ritchie), Carol Berg, Rick (Val) Goos. He is also survived by his grandchildren Melanie (Joseph), Nancy (Ben), Emily (Justin) and Wesley, great-grandchildren Lia and Fayola, 12 brothers and sisters: Ivar (Florence), Big River, SK; Marie Sawatsky, Big River; Karen Vandal, Big River; Sonja Collier, Saskatoon, SK, Knut (Donna) Rekve, Powell River; Joanne Paquette, Surrey; Tony Rekve, Strathmore, AB, Donna (Burt) Campbell, Shellbrook, SK; Olie Rekve, Big River; Gerry (Eileen) Rekve, Saskatoon; Johnny Rekve, Big River; Jackie (Wayne), Seattle; and 29 nieces and nephews. Grant left Big River and came to BC in 1964 with his lifelong friend Roland Swanson in search of employment. Not long after, his two other lifelong friends came too: Maurice and Norman Swanson; they all made Powell River their home. Grant then met the love of his life Verna. They married on July 16, 1966. Grant found employment in 1965 with BC Hydro as a slasher/pole digger. Eventually, with lots of hard work and determination, he put himself through school and became a lineman for BC Hydro, where he worked for 34 years and then retired. After retirement, he took a few months off, but retirement was just not for Grant. He loved to work, so he went back to work as a lineman with Midway Power. Grant loved his profession and loved to teach about it to whoever wanted to learn. He loved to be outside with a fire in his backyard. All who knew and visited him would just look for the smoke and that’s where he would be. Thank you to the St. Paul’s hospital critical-care unit, Powell River General hospital fourth floor staff and Dr. Van Zyl for all your help through Grant’s journey. Special thanks to Knut, Joanne, Jamie and Connie for your countless hours of support to my mom. A celebration of life will be held upstairs at Carlson Community Club on Saturday, June 18, at 1:30 pm.

AROUND TOWN

Graduation ceremony

All that was missing at Brook’s Secondary School’s 2016 graduation celebration was the red carpet. Arrivals at Powell River Recreation Complex were glamorous and fabulous: young women in beautiful gowns, young men sporting suits and tuxedoes, and others with their own sense of style. Many grads arrived in a parade of vehicles that included hot rods, muscle cars, high-performance sports cars and even a semi-truck. DAVE BRINDLE PHOTOS

HERE WE GROW AGAIN

GARY SLOOTWEG

ERIC AMUNDSEN

PETER BORDIGNON

21 Degrees Mechanical would like to welcome Eric Amundsen, a Red Seal journeyman electrician with class B FSR, to the team. Eric has more than 10 years of experience, with residential, commercial and industrial knowledge. Eric’s work has taken him all over Canada, but with a young growing family of five, Eric chose to settle down and raise his children in Powell River. “This is the perfect place to raise a family and get away from the rat race of big cities,” says Eric. Peter Bordignon (journeyman HVAC and refrigeration technician/gasfitter) and Gary Slootweg (gasfitter and sheet-metal installer) are both excited to have Eric on board. “He is a great addition to our team, bringing him on gives us the ability to call ourselves a one-stop shop,” says Peter. “Having all the personnel required to do a job allows the customer to make one call, get a competitive price, sit back and enjoy great service.” Owner Doug Ingram is eager to provide quality services to the community of Powell River. “There has been an overwhelming amount of support since we opened our doors, we want to continue growing and catering to our customers needs,” says Doug. “The electrical component does exactly that, combined with HVAC, refrigeration, gasfitting and custom sheet metal, it allows us to be even more competitive in the marketplace and pass on savings to our customers.”
