FireSmart program in full swing Despite the wet summer so far in the Peace, the FireSmart program has launched a full engagement schedule to educate residents, homeowners and landowners about the evolving risk of wildfire and risk mitigation strategies. So far this season, the PRRD FireSmart team, headed by the local wildfire experts from Mammoth Forestry, has reached 140 attendees at three Wildfire Preparedness Days throughout the region. The program continues to change the way that individuals look at their properties, as even the smallest changes can make a huge impact when it comes to wildfire risk. As one resident recently shared with the team, “My husband was not on board about any fireproofing ideas last year but our neighbours decided to have a hotdog roast this spring and caught the whole place on fire. Unfortunately, they burnt everything–house, shop, sheds, Wildfire Preparedness Day in trailers, vehicles and a couple of acres of Moberly Lake Provincial Park on June 25, land. So long story short, my husband is now 2022 listening to the suggestions you made. We have cut back a ton of brush, including the bottom of his prized spruce trees and we are going to install tin siding on the backs of our outbuildings. I think your program opens the eyes of many homeowners about things they can do to help guard their property from fires.” The PRRD FireSmart team is also making critical infrastructure improvements to ensure communication towers, buildings and equipment remain operational in the event of a wildfire emergency. The team completed mitigation work at ten PRRD-owned sites, cutting back vegetation to align with FireSmart principles.
Grant Writer Services program enjoys continued success securing funds for community groups in the Peace region While the Grant Writer Services program has been available in some form since 2017, the PRRD established a new service contract with Clear Course Consulting in spring 2021 that has revitalized the program offerings. As of June 2022, Clear Course has connected with 35 local community groups, supported 22 groups with their grant applications and helped 12 groups secure more than $1.6M in funding. To help build regional grant writing capacity, the program has facilitated ten information sessions and workshops, and created a series of grant writing resources. The program provides free grant writing services to community groups and not-for-profit organizations within the Regional District. Grant writers can help you find suitable grants for your project and help you complete your grant application. If you need help finding funding or writing a grant application, please contact grantwriter@prrd.bc.ca or visit prrd.bc.ca/grants for more information.
