Seniors You Should Know Julia Alvey, Valedictorian

Sarah Reitmeister, Salutatorian

by Megan Anderson

by Megan Anderson

What do acting and German have to do with one another? Well, for salutatorian Sarah Reitmeister, they’re the two things that she’s spent the most time doing in high school.

The valedictorian of the 2018 class, Julia Alvey, certainly found ways to keep herself busy. She was a part of volleyball, Link Crew, musicals, madrigals, GEMS, Science Olympiad, along with being a board member for both National Honor Society and Spanish NHS. Julia describes her journey to the top of the class as one not “necessarily focused on [rank].” However, she sees her high school experience as her wanting “to do my best and find things I’m passionate about.” Her road to graduation wasn’t always straight and smooth, however. “Leaving my junior year, I definitely had a lack of self confidence. I felt like I didn’t trust myself as much as I should,” she explains. “And I think this year especially I threw myself into everything, and I like to think that I became fearless in a lot of ways.” Over the years, Calculus Christmas Caroling and Vocal Valentines have been the activities she’s enjoyed most. Singing in madrigals was “an opportunity I thought would never come my direction,” she confessed, but she worked hard and practiced as much as she could. It became one of her favorite experiences. Which class did Julia enjoy most? BC Calculus was Julia’s favorite. “It pushed me and helped me find out that I absolutely loved math, and put me on the path to figure out what I wanted to do.” In the future, you can find Julia attending Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., majoring in human sciences and minoring in math. Her ultimate goal is to go to medical school and become a pediatric surgeon.

During her time at PR, she participated in theater, German Club, math team, WYSE, Link Crew, Speech Team, and was a president of German NHS. Sarah says that playing the character Marci in the fall play (Almost, Maine) her junior year, was her favorite high school memory. “I had a great time getting to know the small cast and crew,” she explains. Her favorite class has been AP German, because “it’s a small group of kids, we get along well with our teacher, and it’s challenging.” Speaking of challenging, what was Sarah’s biggest struggle here? She says that dealing with learning to let things go, focusing on herself, and not worrying about competing with others was her biggest battle. So how exactly did she accomplish this honor? “The short answer would be time management,” she says with a smile. The long answer? “Just doing my personal best, and not thinking about my grades in terms of a rank but in terms of doing my personal best to accomplish my goals in the long run.” So where will she be in a couple of years? Next year, Sarah’s heading to Northwestern University, her “dream school,” to double major in Physics and German. Afterwards, she hopes to attend Humboldt University in Berlin to earn a Master’s and PhD in astrophysics.

Fears about the Future to take off during one of the dances to reveal lingerie (I know, already scandalous). Well the scene before that we had this elaborate costume that required a quick change to the next scene that was maybe 1 minute at the most and we had to put on multiple layers of clothing. So we start the scene where we take off the dresses and about 30 secs into the dance we take our dresses off, well I take mine off to see that I had forgotten the shirt part of my lingerie. Seniors You Should Know I’d have to say I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made. Between my peers and teachers, I’ve made friends that will last a lifetime. - Katie Svehla

I think the thing I’m most proud of from my time at PR is the crazy amount of clubs/activities I tried! Being involved in wide variety of activities (NHS, Science Olympiad, Cross Country, Choir) introduced me to so many new people and showed me how valuable it is to step out of my comfort zone. I’m really glad that when I look back on high school I’ll be able to remember all the memories I made and the great people I met! - Katie Schaschwary

Next year I hope to develop myself into a better leader so that I can become as good of an Air Force officer as possible. I am most looking forward to basic cadet training and jumping out of airplanes. - Phillip Koenig

I’m definitely most proud of having joined Speech Team and participated in PRAC. My motto for senior year was “put yourself out there,” and I’m so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone and tried new things this year. - Matthew Tremblay 26 | Prairie Ridge High School

I am looking forward to the freedom of being on my own surrounded by people in the same situation. I hope to find my place and passion while I am in college. - Iain Riemenschneider

Seniors You Should Know I’m gonna miss being in such an inclusive community where everyone supports each other. The students and staff are so welcoming and friendly. Having the opportunity to meet so many people and get involved in new groups was certainly something I’ll miss in the future. - Patrick Nasta

I am not afraid to embarrass myself to make others (or myself) laugh, so I hope people remember how goofy I am. - Rachel Santi

With a long school day often followed by extracurricular activities, I found it hard to fit in spending time with friends, fishing, hiking, reading etc. because of the little free time available. In college I hope to manage my free time well enough to allow myself to learn more and enjoy the things in life that I love the most. - Daniel Lamar I came into high school kind of living in my brother’s shadow and teachers always used to call me by my brother’s name. Now that senior year is coming to a close, I hope to be remembered by my name and leave my own personal legacy with the teachers and the students. - Devarsi Rawal

High school provides everyone with a unique opportunity to meet people they wouldn’t otherwise meet and succeed in areas they’ve never succeeded in. In every class I sat next to different people and made connections with all of them. I’ll miss the accessibility of new people and new experiences that high school provides. Also the gravy box. - Owen Murk
