Seniors You Should Know Jake Richeal, Salutatorian
BreAnne Fleer, Valedictorian
by Nicolette Schlup
by Emma Jewell
“The most important lesson I have learned is to always work hard, and always put forth your best effort
because it will pay off,” explained BreAnne Fleer, PR’s valedictorian. It is clear to see how she accomplished this title with her involvement, hard work, and eagerness to learn. From the start of high school it was BreAnne’s goal to be at the top of the class. But how exactly did she accomplish this? “Starting right at the beginning of freshman year I put my full effort into academics and worked to achieve that goal,” she answered. “It took a lot of studying, but it was completely worth it.” After all that studying, which class stood out during BreAnne’s high school experience? “My favorite class was by far AP Euro; it really inspired me to travel and explore the world!” she exclaimed. “It also inspired me to possibly pursue international relations. Mrs. Dunker made the class very exciting.” One secret to BreAnne’s success was a well-rounded high school career. Involved in Speech Team, Math Team, WYSE, French Club, French NHS, NHS, Newspaper, Student Council, Class Officers, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, she was able to balance her study hours with fun and create lasting memories. “I think the activities definitely enhanced my high school experience because I was able to make a bunch of friends and gain valuable skills like public speaking,” she stated. Looking back, BreAnne is happy to have fond memories of the past four years. “My overall favorite memories are the France trip over spring break this year, and making my APUSH 60s decades video with my friends … going to football games with my friends was pretty fun too.” Next year BreAnne will be majoring in government, with a career path of international relations at Cornell University. She is extremely thankful for her experience at PR and all the people who made it possible. BreAnne says, “Thank you to all of the teachers and my friends and peers for always encouraging me because it has really helped me along the way.”
Jake Richeal is the class of 2016 Salutatorian, though it was not always a goal for him. Jake said, “It just kind of happened. I just took my classes and got my grades.” Jake also said that he is glad that PR is getting rid of class rank because he doesn’t “want to be remember[ed] as the guy who’s one short of being better than everyone in his class.” During high school Jake participated in marching band, Gay-Straight Alliance, WYSE, and pit orchestra. [Jake: Shout out to the trumpet section!] Music played a large role in Jake’s high school experience. Jake’s favorite memory was with the marching band when PR won Marengo sophomore, junior and senior years, but especially sophomore year. He said, “we were all pleasantly surprised that we won Marengo. It was awesome.” When asked about his favorite classes, Jake answered Band because “I could just decompress there, play trumpet and just relax. It was something I was actually good at.” He also liked Freshman Honors English and AP Literature. He said that Mrs. Hartnett, Mrs. Sullivan, and Mrs. Fuerholzer would “actually ask about important things and dig deeper into thematic elements.” He said that they “encourage[d] you to share what you think about the text and not what you’re supposed to think to get the right multiple choice answer.” Jake took Introduction to Computer Science and AP Computer Science his freshman and sophomore year, and he plans to continue with computer science in college. Next year he will attend the University of Illinois. When asked about a life lesson he learned during high school, Jake said he learned that, “I need to get out of myself every so often whenever I am confronted with something I don’t agree with or something I don’t understand. I need to actually stop and think about it before reacting.”
Jake encourages everyone to “try and understand something before making a judgment on it.”

If We Could Do High School Over ...
More advice about trying my freshman year - Connor Adamick Gone to all of the musicals Annie Ahsmann Spend more time with friends than homework Frank Andrzejewski I wish I had not taken so many AP classes senior year. - David Behning Diversified the type of classes I took - Simmer Beniwal I wish I had gotten more involved in superfanning Bailey Bennett Understood how important college was for my future freshman year. If I had known that I would’ve gotten into my dream school - Katy Bergeron Tried harder when it came to school work - Amanda Bianca Save time to work on academics but also have time for your social life. Find a good balance between the two. - Matthew Bork Tried harder freshman year. Get off to a great start! - Christopher Bradshaw Slept more when I had the chance - Garrett Bronn Done better freshman year - Dean Brown Tried playing more sports freshman year, or tried out for a play. - Logan Card Done the Epic Race more than just my senior year - McKenna Casey Tried harder freshman year - Aly Clark Tried harder freshman year so that I didn’t have to try junior and senior year Max Delage Not messed around freshman and half of sophomore year. Failing to start off strong was a really bad idea. It worked out for me in the end, thankfully, but that was only because I worked my behind off junior and senior year. I can only imagine what my GPA/grades would be like if I had the work ethic I had junior year. - Jackson Dufault Got more involved - Jess Dwyer Take more opportunities and play tennis. Seriously. It’s a good time. I wish I had put more effort into school than into my Xbox time - Hayden Dzurisin Actually studied - Nikki Eckland Better grades - Brendon Ewing Asked for more help. Teachers will bend over backwards to help you-- if you take the initiative to ask for it. - Katie Fejer Join a sport and stay with it for all 4 years - Tyler Figgins Organized myself earlier. If you don’t discipline yourself early, you’re bound to fall apart in the long run. - Emily Fitch I wish I had gone to more school events like choir/band concerts, Madrigal Dinner, and sporting events (such as volleyball, baseball, and basketball). BreAnne Fleer

Balanced the types of courses I took. There is nothing wrong with only taking one honors or one AP class. Your 4 years in high school should also be fun! Abby Gartner Gotten involved in the theater department earlier. I have been in Pit Orchestra for my sophomore, junior, and senior years but I have only started doing set crew for the play this spring. I wish I had been involved in the plays earlier because I am having a blast on set crew. - Anna Gehrmann I wish I had started taking engineering classes as a freshman so that I could have taken all 4 engineering classes. - Claire Gehrmann Gotten more involved freshman year - Mady Gerlinger I wish I had tried more activities. There were so many things I wanted to do and I was too afraid. - Kate Golbeck Tried harder. Advice: play sports, have fun - Rocky Greenwell Learned to just be myself earlier on in high school - Hannah Hamwi Taken fewer AP classes and had some free time during the school year - Kevin Karney Visited the pool more often - Robin Kim More wishes; however, these wishes must be redeemable. I don’t want any genie giving me more things I desire (wishes), yet not granting those wishes. Matthew Kouzios Made friends with and hung out with a larger variety of people outside of school - Greg Kulis Gone to more football and basketball games! And joined more clubs! - Andie Kunz I wish I had joined more extracurriculars - Riley Kunz
... We Wish We Had ...
Gotten involved in the musical productions and played a sport I had never played before - Katie Lamb I wish I didn’t worry so much about grades and had more fun with my time in high school. - Christina Lanaski Branched out to more people - Cassie Lansing Taken a language for four years - Rose LaRue Been involved in more extracurricular activities - Sarah Lebrecht Went to the German Student Exchange or the 2016 Spring Break Trip to Europe! - Michelle Lee Learned how I study best for my classes earlier on. I was still trying to figure out how to study when I was a junior. - Madelyn Link Been more organized - Matt Lorenz Gone to more school musicals, plays, and sporting events - Meghan Maglente Been better at managing my time and procrastinated less. Also don’t be afraid to start looking at colleges early and the application process because you have to write a lot of essays. I was nervous and pushed everything off so that made the process more confusing and stressful. - Claire Mahon I wish I had taken time to stop wishing it was over and actually appreciate everyone around me. - Morgan Margiotta Worked harder my freshman/sophomore year, and tried more things. - McKenna Miller Gone to the school play more - Lucas Minutillo Paid attention in Junior Seminar... - Sofia Miranda No regrets yo - Michael Moran Gotten into more extracurriculars sooner than my upperclassman years. - Sarah Nash I wish I had done more extracurricular activities and sports. I say this because I believe that those things are what makes people come together and make amazing memories. I think that every high school student should do something after school. It’s such an awesome experience! - Robert Olsen Not taken AP classes - Ryan Orr Tried harder freshman year - Megan Ozga I wish I would have tried harder freshman year - Morgan Padera Been more involved - Hannah Palsgrove Joined choir (I know my voice is nasty but still seems like something that would’ve been super fun) - Sonia Patel Appreciated what the school has to offer more. It took me until my senior year to realize how much PR actually has to offer and even though it seems like you have a lot of time before you graduate, you’ll be surprised how fast your senior year goes by and how it doesn’t give you much time to take in everything. Get involved, go to events, and make the most of your high school career - Akshar Patel An elevator pass - Dereck Pearson Seen at least one football game from the superfan section - Steven Peterson Tried harder my freshman year so that I didn’t need all these required classes to get into college. - Travis Piotrowski Used the College & Career Center more - Marisa Pollastrini I wish I had done a better job at maintaining friendships. Peter, I wish I got to know you a lot sooner. You are such a great friend. And John, I wish we can get to know each other a little better. You both are the friends I wish I met way back in 9th grade. - Travis Poole I wish I had known all of the great things that PR has to offer. Like all the clubs, the engineering program, the theatre program. I am still mad at myself for not getting into any of them as a freshman. - Sam Prather I wish I had known how easy it is to make friends while still being myself. - Will Restrepo Better grades freshman year - Zac Rietz
Played football more than one year - Ethan Routzahn Realized how quickly my time in high school went by. It goes by pretty quickly! I wish I hadn’t missed so much school. I wish I had taken more time to be grateful for all the amazing things and people in my life. - Danny Schaschwary Gotten involved earlier! - Sam Schufman Known which classes would better set me up for what I wish to do sooner - Tyler Schwallie Gone to more parties on the weekend - Terrell Sheridan I wish I had been more outgoing and participated in more extracurriculars (while working hard academically of course) especially as an underclassman. - Brandon Sjodin Tried harder freshman year - Kyle Stenzel Done less homework - Dylan Stenzel I wish I had challenged myself more in high school. Do something you never thought you could do. - Mariah Truitt I wish I had realized that I am not the only one who often doesn’t understand and that it is fine to seek assistance. - Andrea Vannatta Branched out to more people & kept in touch with friends from middle school. Kirsten Voel-Pel Been more confident in my decisions, and what I thought was right. I spent so much time always doubting myself, and thinking I was living my high school career wrong because of what other people thought was right. But everything I did was the right thing for me, and I unfortunately figured this out not too long ago. So be confident in what you think is best for you, and don’t doubt yourself. You know you best. - Brianna Walneck Taken an art class. I know everyone says that, but it really is true. - Megan Walsh Gotten to know more of my classmates more. - Misia Wasilewski Actually tried with my homework and used all of the opportunities given. - Elliott Wesa Tried harder sophomore year. - Jordyn White I wish I had done more extracurriculars and had been more involved. It’s nice to take the basic classes for graduation requirements, but try to find something you really like and have fun! - Sierra Zima

... Here’s Some Advice Make sure that you cherish your time at Prairie Ridge because it will be over before you know it. Work hard but at the same time have fun! - Luke Annen You’ll always regret the things you don’t do more than the mistakes you make Brianna Berillo Get out there and try everything, but most of all have fun! - Kate Birr To underclassmen and/or anyone who is lost: Find what you love to do and never ever let anyone keep you from doing it. Whether it’s a sport, or singing, or writing, or drawing, find your passion and keep it close to your heart, and happiness will follow. - Reilly Branson Try to maintain an equal balance of sleep, schoolwork, friends, and extracurricular activities. It’s never been an easy task, but focusing on all aspects of your life is so important! Make sure you study hard and get good grades, but don’t forget to relax and hang out with friends on the weekends! This school stresses taking endless amounts of AP classes and playing two sports, but do what is manageable for you and your lifestyle. Paulina Concialdi Take advice, but decide for yourself whether you should use it. - Andrew Eschweiler Underclassmen should take classes that interest them, rather than go overload on AP and honors courses! - Ashley Frantz Advice: know the difference between your and you’re. - Brandon Jensen Take fun classes! - Sam Kahoun Do not procrastinate! I waited till the last minute to do all of my projects, and it was very stressful. - Taylor Kuhn Try in school, get things done and don’t procrastinate. I’m speaking from experience. It sucks. - Eduardo Lara 1) it’s okay to not be great at something as long as you’re passionate about it 2) life is unfair but you’ll always have the upperhand if you work with what you are given 3) be nice to people. Smile in the hallways and try to make sure everyone feels important - Ally Ledder Get involved, whether it be a sport or club. You’ll make so many new friends and memories! - Kaitlin Leverenz Try harder freshman year - Tyler Loeding Be involved: you will regret it if you don’t! - Nicole Martenson My advice to underclassmen is to get involved! Try a sport, participate in theater or join an academic club; you will meet great people! - Emily Matts Join lots of clubs and activities! It’s a great way to meet people - Katelyn Merle Please sleep more than 4 hours a night - Keiashia Moore Use high school as a place where you can find yourself. It’s hard to become individualized, but PR is a great place to experiment and find what’s right for you. - Diana Muranovic
Just remember that in the end you are defined by what you love, not who loves you. - Katie O’Malley Just because your friends are starting to change, doesn’t mean that you have to change as well. Stay true to what you believe in, and everything will work out in the end. - Stephanie Perez Start looking at colleges early. You don’t want to put applications off and miss deadlines. So many people get stressed out about the whole process, so begin sooner rather than later! - Eve Pollock Don’t forget to step back and appreciate the little moments! High school can be incredibly overwhelming. Remembering to relax and enjoy the ride can make a huge difference! Grace Pontius DON’T YOU DARE think you can go to your locker every period!! Keep things in your backpack and consider it exercise. Sara Pranjic Never miss an opportunity because you’re scared of the time commitment or having enough courage. Be bold! Take advantage of every moment! Gigi Relic Take AP US History if you can. From everything I’ve heard, it’s not your standard AP boatload of work: regular US History actually has more assignments and memorization, while APUSH has fun and learns way more along the way. - Jake Richeal Don’t be afraid to adventure outside your comfort zone! - Ari Samaan Don’t take it for granted!!! Go to every event you can. It goes by faster than you think! Don’t miss any chances to be you and explore new things. Take risks and don’t forget to have fun! Grades don’t determine your whole life. - Renee Santi I highly encourage all underclassmen to join an extracurricular, but not too many to the point where you are becoming overwhelmed with your school work. It’s not so much the academics that will create the memories of your high school experience, but what you are willing to do to make an everlasting impact on those in your community and to the people around you. - Michael Schultz Take AP classes - Isabella Stuart If you are an underclassman... You still have time!!!!! Go to EVERYTHING! Make the most of your high school experience because it’s gonna be over before you know it and I know that being a part of the school was one of the best decisions I could have made! - Lizzie Van Doorn Get involved. Try things outside of your comfort zone. Yeah, it might be scary, but it’s worth it in the long run. - Cady Weber

This year the news team asked students to submit their questions about PR for the Ask the Principal series. Visit PRWolfPrints.com to read these stories and more.
Suggestions for PR
Several seniors answered this question: “What is one thing you would suggest to make PR a better place?” COMMENT BOX
Join us next year as we continue to ask questions and tell the stories that matter at Prairie Ridge.
Either right outside the deans’ office, the main office or in the front hall, we have a suggestion box set up so students can let the administration know of any questions, comments, or concerns they might have. - John Williams
PASSION = PERFECTION
COME TOGETHER
EMBRACE STUDENT SERVICES
MORE ASSEMBLIES
Recognize that we don’t have to be perfect at everything. I think people feel a lot of pressure to be the best students, athletes, musicians, but as long as you’re passionate about something, trying your hardest and having fun with it is still a pretty big accomplishment. - Ally Ledder
Try and de-stigmatize Student Services. It’s a great place with lots of really stellar faculty, but most people don’t go there when they really should. It’s treated like a sign of weakness to ask for emotional help. - Jake Richeal
MORE STUDENT VOICE
Beginning elections of the student government, as well as increasing power for student representatives to make decisions in the school. We should give them power to actually influence things in the school other than dances and fundraisers, stop applications and administration vetting for their positions, and allow referendums from a majority of students that must be officially responded to by the administration. In this way we can ensure that democracy truly is a verb. - Joey Russel
A field day right in the beginning of the year! Where the whole student body and faculty would be outside and working together on different activities in a fun way! There, everyone would meet new people and work together. It would be an awesome way to bring the school together and get to know each other. - Stephanie Perez
We as a student body need to realize that each and every one of us is going through something, including our teachers and coaches as well. When we have motivational speakers come into PR to share their stories I think it is a huge eye opener for everyone. - Annie Frankowski

I hope to find a way to make my mark and find who I am in college, not who I am in high school. Nobody will care who I was at PR or what I did, so I hope to become a better person than I am today by further developing my traits that I struggle with and also by finding how I fit in to a brand new community of people. I hope to make an effort each day not only to improve as an individual, but also to improve the lives of the others around me. - Josh Svehla
The high school experience that I am most proud of is the time I spent on speech team. During the four years, I greatly improved my public speaking skills, met amazing people from other high schools and made countless memories with my friends from PR. Additionally, I achieved my goal of qualifying for the state tournament this year and went on to win 2nd place in impromptu speaking. - Grace Pontius

I have a lot of big plans for myself next year. After high school I am going to Iceland to study the language and then eventually go on to culinary school. I hope to be fluent in Icelandic by the next year and start my culinary career. I want to be more confident as a person and to make my family proud. - Bryndis Ross
I’m hoping for some ice because the real world’s going to hit me hard. It’s going to hit everyone hard, but I’m excited! Taxes until I die, student loans, punching a clock, insurance, children (hopefully not too soon but c’est la vie), people, having to deal with people and absolute freedom to make any choice you want, wise or idiotic. To all of that, I say bring it. - Austin Comstock
I hope that everyone remembers me as the nicest person as well as one of the hardest workers that they have ever met. I hope that I could be looked up to as a role model and someone that people wanted to be around. - Luke Annen
I am most proud of the strong relationships I have been able to build and maintain with many of the teachers at PR. They work very hard and care greatly for all of their students. - Meghan Maglente

The Art and Theater/Choir departments have served me and my friends as a home away from home: a safe haven to return to in the middle of a harsh school day for some comfort. I’m going to miss having the safety of my ridiculous thespian, art-loving family keeping me afloat! But, Jensen, Mr. D, and Cummins wouldn’t kick me out of the nest if they didn’t think I was ready, so as much as I’ll miss the PR Theater, or the Art Room, I’m excited to see the greater things in front of me. - Reilly Branson
I want to be remembered by all of my teachers. Over my four years at Prairie Ridge I have made it my greatest priority to make long lasting relationships with all of my teachers. The teachers at this school could not get any better. They’re truly life-changing people. - Abby Gartner Wolf Prints May 2016 | 19
Seniors You Should Know I want to be remembered as silly and nerdy with a fun personality. I want to be the person that anyone can come up to and have a conversation with about anything. - Katy Bergeron
I hope to be remembered first and foremost as a kind and helpful person. I feel that the time we spend in high school trying to improve grades, participate in extracurricular activities, and become as perfect as possible causes us to forget that people should treat each other with assistance rather than competition, and kindness rather than the anger and sadness resulting from stress and overwork. - Joey Russel
I am most proud of winning first place at the Marengo Marching Band Competition for three years in a row. I am proud of this because of how hard we worked and came together as a team to perfect the shows. I am also proud of how I did in my classes and knowing that I did my best. - Kate Birr

When the time came to pull out the flags, I just waved my arm in the motions, but it was really awkward because everyone around me had an actual flag. - Anna Gehrmann Walking into the boys locker room the first week of freshman year - Hannah Hamwi Freshman year, my friend and I both had a huge crush on a senior in our engineering class. One day we were discussing how good looking she was. Meanwhile, our teacher overheard us and had to give us a talk about paying attention to the class and not her...brutally awkward. - Greg Kulis Junior year when Miss Orsi was throwing a kid next to me a jolly rancher for Mad Gab Monday and it went down my shirt. It happened quite often. - Michelle Lee When I thought my lunch period was 5th instead of 6th and my whole class watched me walk out to my car - Matt Lorenz In Chem when my sweater caught the edge of an entire box of test tubes and the whole thing fell. I was still on the top of the castle when it was being rolled off stage, and the curtain got caught on the edge of it. Everything was totally dark, so I couldn’t see where I was stepping when I went to go untangle the curtain. So I fell down over 6 feet of stairs, and happened to make the biggest noise while doing so. I totally thought I broke my whole body, it hurt so bad.
