The Master of Silence and Suspense Alfred Hitchcock
Cinephilia-Live The Cinema You Love
Alfred THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH!
“I beg permission to mention by name only four people who have given me the most affection, appreciation, and encouragement, and constant collaboration. The first of the four is a film editor, the second is a scriptwriter, the third is the mother of my daughter Pat, and the fourth is as fine a cook as ever performed miracles in a domestic kitchen and their names are Alma Reville.” – Alfred Hitchcock. A pioneer in the usage of unique techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genre, a masterful career spanning over 50 glorious years and cementing a place in the world of cinema for generations to come would still cut it short when describing the ‘Master of Suspense’, Alfred Hitchcock. His movies have gone down in history as classics not just for its great story or great cast but simply because of how he was able to manipulate an audience using simple but ingenious cinematic techniques. Alfred Hitchcock is among the few directors to combine a strong reputation for high-art film-making with great audience popularity. Throughout his career, there was always consistency of quality plot-lines and technical ingenuity that has earned him the recognition of being one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. In a documentary ‘Film on Film’, Hitchcock spoke about the essential elements that help make a great film. In all of his films, the villain is a person you’d never suspect. The beauty lies in the possibility of an everyday character being the real murderer. In Hitchcock’s eyes, no one is ever truly innocent. Everyone in his films is guilty of something. For example, in Dial M for Murder, Margot is not really the innocent victim because she was cheating on her husband. Another technique Hitchcock uses is to have places familiar to the audience as settings for danger. He sometimes uses landmarks to show complete order and have disorder happen there. Other times he uses places that everyday people go to. For example, in Psycho, danger happened in a
Hitchcock Cinephilia-Live The Cinema You Love
hotel that the audience is familiar with as a place where you can safely rest. This is to allow the audience to think that danger can happen anywhere and that it can happen to anyone. Another technique that Hitchcock used to build suspense was to let the audience know more about the plot than characters. This is to leave the audience helpless when they know that something is going to happen. This was famously known as the ‘Bomb Theory’. His frequent collaboration with great artists such as Cary Grant, James Stewart and Ingrid Bergman have produced classics such as North by Northwest, Suspicion, Notorious, To catch A Thief, Rear Window, Vertigo, Rope, The Man Who Knew Too Much; the list goes on and there were also movies like Psycho & 39 Steps all showcasing his adept skill of heightening the audiences’ emotion in order to create suspense and because of this transcendent ability of engineering reactions from the audience and with the pure intent being able to instigate a profound sense of uncertainty and combining that with his immense understanding of the human psyche and adroit manipulation of film techniques Hitchcock is regarded as an Auteur. In his glorious career, the accolades he received were innumerable, some of the significant ones being- receiving the life time achievement award from AFI and also from the directors guild awards; recipient of the Cecil.B.Demille award; 5 time Oscar nominee and also recipient of the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial award. He was once asked in an interview about where he drew his inspiration from for being the cinematic force that he represents, he said: “Once, as a child, I had done something of which my father disapproved, I was given a note to take to the police chief. The officer read it and put me in a jail cell for ten minutes” and his father said, “That’s what we do to boys who are naughty.” Ever since then Hitchcock has had a phobia for police and police stations, and it is this fear that has manifested itself in many of his films. And then the “HITCHCOCK-IAN ERA” was born.

Oldboy- Bloody yet Beautiful Expert Rating 9/10 -Siddharth Mohanta The second instalment from the Vengeance Trilogy comes the most excellent story a viewer would ever come across. The story of a boy is to find peace only when he gets his long awaited revenge from the person who was the reason for his sister’s death.
not only ingenious, but the payoff and twists are magnificent.
Script/Story Based on Old Boy by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. The story of this movie is something that will haunt you, but yet you cant stop yourself from Loving it.
The story of a man who was exiled from the world and left to rot for 10 years in a cell without any human contact and reason what so ever, and his will to find the person who kept him captive and get his vengeance. The story starts off with a man (Dae-su Oh) being captured on the night of his daughter’s birthday and left in a rotting cell with nothing but a television and a bed to sleep in. He struggles through the need of human contact and the urge to speak to a human being, this continues for 10 years. His frustrations makes him prepare for the day when he might get a release and find the reason behind his imprisonment, which so happens and he runs to find the reasons behind his imprisonment. The movie has a very strong character creation and an excellent script to make it the nightmare of anyone’s dreams. The way the story grows onto you is spine chilling. Every shot is bursting with background detail, a great amount of attention on the production design (the theme of a certain colour in a scene was restrained, yet perfectly balanced). The actors really gave it all, especially the 2 male leads who really blew me away. The music is a varied mix of beautiful classical music and some pretty cool techno. The screenplay is brilliant; the characters are developed very well, extremely complex, and the plot is

Actors: Choi Min-sik Yoo Ji-tae Kang Hye-jung
Why to watch Old Boy? Direction: Chan-WooK Park brought about a masterpiece. Apart from the movie on a whole, the Climax of the movie is something that the director won’t let you forget for your lifetime.
Screenplay: Hwang Jo-yun Park Chan-wook Lim Chun-hyeong Lim Joon-hyung Garon Tsuchiya This group did a fabulous job, especially in the scene where the lead character returns back to the cell he was kept in and he
You got to watch the movie to understand the depth of character building done by the actors. One of the best movies coming from South Korea. Good direction, acting, screenplay and script what else do you need?
Why not to watch Old Boy? Too much violence for a normal movie goer. Explicit content and extreme violence, specially in the climax. The movie portraits some extreme emotions, which is hard to digest. The scene where the lead character is introduced to his daughter is SICK!!!

Scent of a woman- Pacino all The way Expert Rating 9/10 -Priyarth Mukherjee “If you make a mistake, just get tangled up and tango on.” Scent of a woman is the scent of master-class and perfection. Nothing can get wrong when it’s Pacino and here is your evidence. Lt. Col. Frank Slade travels first class lodges in the best hotel, dines in the best restaurant and drives the best wheels and yet he is the most unstable and unpredictable guy in that 2 and a half hour of your life at New York and Boston. Colonel Slade was like that child in the whole movie who had just started to walk. You want to see him do so but at the same time you are afraid that he might fall any single second. And, somewhere inside you keep waiting for that to happen. But, in the end when he stood He not only out-stood but also did he roar. He roared through all the souls sitting there consciously (or unconsciously) and that’s when you can’t help but say Yeah! it’s Pacino. Charlie Simms (Chris O’Donnell) is a student on scholarship at Baird School and is looking for a weekend job. This is when he lands up in front at Colonel’s Place. What he was expecting was a wining helpless old blind man but, what he got was a passionate lover of “Scent of a woman.” Colonel was as unpredictable as a tornado. He came out of nowhere and vanished even before you could notice. Initially, it looked as if It’s his hobby to go out on wild vacations. Later you start knowing him to be an old man on the last vacation of his life after which he wishes to end it. Suddenly, you feel he has started living and the next moment he is down into Mariana Trench. Char-
lie hangs all through this. Though initially he was not comfortable travelling with him but with time and during the crisis he hangs on and in a way revives a departing soldier. And in the end the soldier pays him back well.
watch this move i would say dude, it’s Pacino that too at his best.
Screenplay B O Goldman Screenplay of the movie was decent enough to keep you interested. The close-ups and the long shots were scripted really nice and it conveys the feel of the movie very nicely
Direction Martin Brest
Al Pacino lived blindfolded for months just in order to get the feel of how a blind man survives. This is what the movie is about perfection. Pacino washed everything out but O’Donnell also played a good role and Supported him really nice. If you are cinephillic you can definitely not miss out on this Classic. After all its Pacino.
Why to watch Scent of a Woman? Pacino! Pacino! Pacino! This movie is a one man’s show and no one on this earth can disagree. If you want a reason to
Direction was really good. Especially the closing minutes was so perfect that it lifts you up and makes you leave the movie fully elevated. In a way this was the real beauty of this particular movie.
Why not to watch Scent of a Woman? If you are a Chuck Norris fan you might find this movie a little slow but guys this is not Norris it’s Pacino. One of the best in its genre of movie. A splendid drama and as a cinephilic you got to watch it.

Editing-"The art of Sculpting a film." Film editing is like an art of sculpting a piece of rock into a beautiful statue. As an amateur Adobe provides you with the best tools. -Prashant Shebannavar
What is Editing?
C
reation of any motion picture involves 3 basic steps. Technically these 3 steps are ‘Pre-Production’ ‘Production’ and ‘post production’. To simplify we might consider Pre production as ‘THE IDEA’, Production as ‘THE ACT’, and Post production as ‘THE PRESENTATION’. Editing is the part of ‘ The Presentation’. It is like the art of sculpting a statue out
of a stone. After you keep down your camera the editing starts. This can be considered as one of the most important parts of a cinema creation as editing is the part where you provide a flow to your story. If the editing of a movie is not up to the mark
the movie will not be able to convey the mood and the idea it wants to convey.Editing involves the selection
and combining of shots, connecting the resulting sequences, and ultimately creating a finished movie.
Knowing Your Tools:
L
ike the act of sculpting editing also requires its tools. This is when Softwares like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Sony vegas etc. show up. There are many types of video editing software, all at different prices and offering different features. Softwares like Final Cut Pro,
and Avid are considered to be the best in business at the professional arenas. But, as a newbee in the arena of editing the most suggested accepted and professional tools are provided to you by Adobe. Softwares by adobe are fully apt to compete with the works of FCP and Avid and are considered as professional softwares.
Adobe Premier: Adobe Premiere is a professional video editing software for creating and adjusting video projects in number of formats. It is a complete video option for amateur film makers and even for professional editors. This software can be used to combine footages and audio together. It also works wonders when it comes to color correct a video. Colour correction can subtly enhance the
emotional and aesthitical effect of a scene.
It is very useful to give transition effects. These effects generally go un-noticed but are very necessary to keep the flow of the movie going and to avoid visible 'cuts'. You can easily split screens usint it. A split screen offers a modern perspective for telling a story. The opacity control and

multiple video streaming rows allow the creation of super imposed shots. These shots provide an opportunity for reflection. These are the most commonly and widely used tricks and methods to make a movie look one piece but apart from this Premiere has the potential to affect the movie in whatever way
you want.
Some effects and tricks to enhance your movie:

ubbing, noise reduction and other sound tricks can make your movie look very professional. Specially while shooting a sort film where it is not simple to vacate the shoot location it becomes very essential. Unwanted sound or Noise can be in form of external sounds overlapping the dialogues, wind blowing across your camera microphone or the intensity of dialogues remaining low due to its distance from the camera. Slow Motion:
Slowing down a video can enhance emotional and dramatic moments. Try it in wedding videos or flashback scenes and don’t forget comedy, funny moments are often even more hilarious when seen in slow-mo!
Fade In & Fade Out:
You’ll notice that most professional videos begin and end with a black screen. It’s easy to give your projects this same professional look by adding a Fade In at the start of the video and a Fade Out at the end.
Black and White screen give your movie a Hollywood style widescreen look. Many cameras now shoot in 16x9, but even if yours is 4x3 you can letterbox the video to get a widescreen effect. Make sure, though, that you don’t cut off anyone’s head in the process!

Superimposing one video image on top of another can be a little bit tricky, but it is a powerful tool if used properly. Be careful where you apply it; if the
Cross Fade:
Cross-fade basically is an audio transition which can be used with any of the above effects in adobe premiere. Cross fade allows the sound of the preceeding video to gradually slow down in the transition area and the audio of the second video to start ascending gradually.
Crossfade is very effective when it comes to geting rid of any abrupt start in the audio clip or any sort of abrupt finish or cut.It helps you to evade the visibility of cuts.

General Rules Of Editing By following some simple rules for video editing which can make movies flow together smoothly, in a classic style, without resorting to multiple transitions. Of course, rules were made to be broken and creative editors take extreme artistic license.
B-Roll B-roll refers to video footage that sets the scene, reveals details, or generally enhances the story. For example, at a school play, besides shooting the play, you could get b-roll of the outside of the school, the program, faces of audience members, cast members hiding in the wings, or costume details. These clips can be used to cover any cuts, or to smooth transitions from one scene to another.

Change Focal Lengths When you have two shots of the same subject, it’s easy to cut between close and wide angles. So, when shooting an interview, or
matically, but the visually similar elements make for a smooth, creative cut. You can do the same thing in your videos. Cut from a flower on a wedding cake to the groom’s boutenier, or tilt up to the blue sky from one scene and then down from the sky to a different scene.
Wipe A transition between shots in which a line passes across the screen, eliminating the first shot as it goes replacing it with the next one. A very dynamic and noticeable transition, it is usually employed in action or adventure films. It often suggest a brief temporal ellipsis and a direct connection between the two image.
12 Cinephilia-Live the Cinema you Love
Match the Scene The beauty of editing is that you can take footage shots out of order or at separate times and cut them together so that they appear as one continuous scene. To do this effectively, the elements in the shots should match up. For example, a subject who exits frame right should enter the next shot frame left. Otherwise, it appears as if they turned around and are walking in the other direction. Or, if the subject is holding something in one shot, don’t cut directly to a shot of them empty-handed. If you don’t have the right shots to make matched edits, insert some b-roll in between to make your video smooth.
Motivate Yourself Ultimately, every cut should be motivated. There should be a reason for you wanting to switch from one shot or camera angle to another. Sometimes that motivation is as simple as, “the camera shake,” or “someone walking in front of the camera.” Ideally, though, your motivations for cutting should be to allow the narrative storytelling of your video flowing.
Advanced Editing Adobe After Effect is a professional standard for Motion Graphics, Compositing, and visual effects for yourVideo.
Editor can work with any element like Video, Audio, Still images or adobe illustrators. And can manipulate these objects neither 2D or 3D space. And by using advance technique such as roto brush feature u can grab just part of a layer you want and combine of an other world composited with a new background. Keylight tool is another powerful tool to remove green screen from d background giving you the freedom putting subject anywhere you want. You can also create several effects and color correction in it.

Mobile Film Making:
Getting Started: What does it take to get started? Less money and equipment than you’d think. Here’s what you need to start making movies good enough to distribute online, sell to Internet content vendors, and enter into the growing number of mobile phone film festivals around the world.... or to just share with friends, family, and personal fans.

Cinema has always been associated to films, until now, when technology has pushed us into the digital space. With time the mode of recording videos has changed and the equipments are getting have shrunk. So the question is how small can these cameras get? Yes you have the answer in your pockets. An explosion of video-ready mobile phones has opened up an entirely new of possibilities for “indie” filmmakers. Making cinema without proper financial funding was never that hard. Making the movie seen was always the toughest job. But, today both the fronts of making a cinema without funds and making it seen (i.e. distribution of your cinema) has become a child’s play. With the internet providing a humongous platform for the movies to showcase themselves to the whole world and the improvement in the quality of mobile cameras have literally made movie making a job of one hand for the passionate cinema makers and lovers.

O

There are five “most common” ways of getting your stuff out of your cameraphone and onto the Web so that you can share it, edit it, and otherwise work it: using a USB cable (often included in your phone package), using a wireless connection (like Blue Tooth), “posting” or “friending” your video to a social networking space

Tackling The Challenges: Projection of a Mobile Film: Handling a tiny Camera: The biggest drawback of a mobile camera is its inefficiency to project a movie made out of it on a huge screen. Mobile movies can do wonders on a web format but when it comes to any other medium with a larger screen, it falls short.
At the time of filming, back in 2008, the possibility of ac-
tually shooting the film on a mobile phone was strongly considered. Tests were shot, and a number of different phones and their capabilities were looked at, but at the time the technology just wasn’t able to produce a watchable film on the big screen (though it certainly would have been possible for Michelangelo’s needs). In the end, for creative reasons, it was decided the film be shot on the Panasonic HVX-200, a mid-range professional camera that produced the clean, almost amateurish look of digital that Sally and Steve Fierberg, the Director of Photography, were trying to achieve, while still feeling cinematic enough that an audience could stand to watch an entirely handheld ninety minutes of interviews in a cinema.
Audio can play a major spoilsport while shooting from a mobile camera. While shooting from a mobile camera we often land up with an unclear audio clip.

Unless you want to start buying a boatload of peripherals, you can’t do too much about the audio until you get to post-production, except make sure that your camera-
You can also pay extra-special attention to the audio environment in which you’re shooting, making sure that it’s as “clean” as possible.
In RAGE, Sally’s 2009 film which defied all the usual conventions of cinema, the character Michelangelo, unheard and unseen throughout, managed to film his interviewees using only his mobile phone, before secretly posting the interviews on his website.

One of the toughest production challenges in making mobile phone movies is keeping the tiny little camera steady enough to avoid shaky footage. A simple cloth arm sling makes a great brace for your camera-phone. Pick up a cheap, lightweight sling at your local pharmacy, chemist, or medical supply store, and wear it on your next shoot. Use the sling to hold your “off ” arm steady across the front of your chest while you rest your camera-phone on top of it. This means that if you’re right-handed, you’ll use the sling to strap your left arm across your body, and perch your camera-phone on top of that just like a shelf. Tighten up your torso so that it moves as a single, unified block, just like the head of a tripod with a camera mounted on it, and you’ll get a noticeable drop-off in the amount of “shake” you’ll see in your footage. You can easily use the arm sling steadicam on all sorts of public moving conveyances, like escalators, glass elevators, and moving sidewalks at airports to nab the kinds of moving camera shots you’d obtain with a wheeled tripod, like pans and dollies.

How to get a stable video?
The most frustrating part in any movi makers life is when he puts in his complete imagination and yet cannot get the desired result.
An unstable or shaky video makes your movie look unprofessional. Moreover any such video or movie can never capture a viewers thoughts and imagination as the shakiness of the video keeps breaking the flow of a movie. Yet, Sometimes a shaking video might also play the trick especially when a movie involves a first person camera cinematography. Shaking of the camera gives a realist feel to such ideas.
If you are looking to stablize your grounds here are three basic things you can do to make your video shakefree and professional looking.
1
Get
yourself a bunch of bungee cords, a soft padded sleeve of some type (like an old athletic sock or an oven mitt) and a few C-clamps (available at your local hardware store). This bag of tricks will let you attach your camera-phone to almost any solid object that you might find conveniently located somewhere in your shooting environment, like a construction site scaffold, an office doorknob, a table leg, and so on.
2
Speaking
of tripods, those tiny little backpacker tripods you see in travel catalogues and in the “impulse purchase” section at photo stores can be useful, although they usually aren’t enough by themselves if you want really steady footage, especially from outdoor shooting.
The Unstable Grounds:
The main advantage they do offer is the ability to pan or tilt while shooting, if you get a backpacker tripod that comes equipped with a mini-handle. This will give you better traction for moving the camera than just grabbing the handset and hoping for the best. Combine a handle-equipped backpacker tripod with the clamp-andbungee strategy, ‘though, and you’re in business.
3
T
he best mobile phone “tripod” of all is the human body, because it absorbs so many types of vibration before they reach the camera-phone and because it’s big enough and weighty enough to provide meaningful stability while shooting. Flesh, blood and bone have a certain degree of “give” built it that you just won’t find in smaller, lighter stabilizing equipment, so it’s important to practice using yourself as a piece of field gear in order
Picture stability is another matter altogether. There’s actually quite a bit you can do to improve this, despite the camera-phone’s absurdly small size and weight, and the innate vulnerability to camera tremour that goes with those qualities. As camera size shrinks, picture shakiness soars, since the lighter the recording device the tougher it is to hold steady without a tripod. The bad news is that it’s difficult to keep a cameraphone steady even with a tripod. It’s so ultra-lightweight that even a slight breeze will send it quivering. That’s outside, of course. Inside, depending on the shooting circumstances, even walking in the vicinity of a locked-down camera-phone can make it vibrate enough to create visible tremour in your footage. But the good news is that there are ways of dealing with most of these problems, if you’re willing to get creative and leave your cinematic superego on the shelf, because most of the solutions emerge from low-tech -- if not no-tech-- down-home problem-solving.
to capture the steadiest footage your phone can produce. The best posture for your life-as-a-tripod is different with a camera-phone than it is for more conventional types of recording equipment. Tuck your elbows into your sides and think of your torso as one solid unit. When you change direction with the camera-phone, such as panning, for instance, don’t move the phone – move your entire torso. The closer you hold the phone to your body, the steadier your footage will be, as long as you don’t actually rest the phone against your body, because then you’ll pick up your breathing motion on tape. For really important shots (or anything you try to shoot in close up), borrow a trick from target shooters. The natural inclination is to hold your breath while you take the shot. Don’t do it. The muscle tension generated by holding your breath won’t show up on most video equipment, but it will create problems with the ultra-light camera-phone. Instead, frame your shot and take a full, deep breath. Release half of it, then press “record.” You’re a lot steadier with half a lung full of air than you are fighting with yourself over no air at all.

Making Your Own Film Things to keep in mind before you shoot: The hard realities of being really short... The challenge every short filmmaker must face is how to affect an audience emotionally, say something, take the audience on a journey, all within a few minutes (Running times for short films vary, but a short is generally considered to be a film under 30 minutes, and for Mobile Stories we’re limited to 3 minutes or less. That’s a challenge!) And let’s not forget that short films for the Web are usually enjoyed on small laptop screens and cell phones, often with additional distractions while the audience of one sits in an airport lounge, or a cafe, or a subway car. So what can you do to tailor your story to successfully work within this particular medium?
KEEP YOUR STORY SMALL:
One character with a single question is going to fit more comfortably in a short time than an epic with many characters. If you do include a group of
characters, they may share the same problem or circumstance, though they might have different perspectives on it.
START A SCENE LATE; END A SCENE EARLY:
This is actually a great rule to follow for all filmmaking, no matter what the length, but it’s even more important in the short film. Try and move your scene as far into the
“action” as possible, and get out as fast as possible. You don’t have much time to tell your story! It also keeps the pace of the film moving along.

That’s not to say you can’t include “long shots” but we have to know that the long shot is a showing person not a tiny fly in the distance. The same goes for titles. Make the font big enough to read on a small screen.
LIGHTING:
Try to illuminate the most important elements in a scene, and let the less important elements either fall into shadow or at least not be brighter than the point of interest. Usually the most important thing
is your actors’ faces. So, generally, you want to be sure that your actors’ faces are lit brightly enough to stand out from the rest of the scene, without overexposing your image.
days the picture quality of cameras is much better than the sound quality of onboard microphones. Plus, the onboard microphone will usually pick up the sound of the whirring camera and
ruin your dialogue anyhow. You’re going to get the best results by using an external microphone, and running it on a cable away from the camera. Figure out what sort of audio-inputs your cam-
KEEP THE SCREEN SIZE IN MIND:
Just like a good story, the most interesting lighting has contrast (that is, bright areas and darker areas in the same scene).

KEEP IT LEGAL (MUSIC, LOGOS AND ACTORS):
online communities to try and find music to use in your film. You don’t have to own the music, you just have to have the owner give you the right to use it. Get it in writing. Logos: Speaking of staying legal, keep logos and labels out of your film. That means t-shirts with recognizable emblems, posters, CD covers, labels on food products. If someone is drinking from a can with a logo on it, you’d best cover it up or have it turned in such a way the audience can’t read it. That’s
because almost every logo is trademarked, and you’re not supposed to reproduce those trademarks in unauthorized media. Actors and contributors: Finally, get a release from everyone involved creatively. You might all be best friends, but if your film turns out really well, you may be asked to show the paperwork to prove you had the rights to film those actors and use that script. Again, get it in writing. There are all kinds of examples online that show you what an actor release and a music release look like.
a film. There is a technique known as “editing in-camera.” That basically means you shoot your film in the same sequence as the story/ script unfolds. There is no editing! Every time a scene ends, you stop recording and don’t’ start recording again until the next scene is ready to begin. It’s a tricky technique because if a scene doesn’t work, you can’t do Sometimes even free: Lights: Try the hardware store. Or your dad’s garage. Worklights are powerful and cheap too. Dollies: To add those moving shots to your film, don’t forget you can use anything with wheels, as long as you and/or your tripod can fit
it a second time. The entire film has to be shot successfully in one go so it’s complete and intact on the tape. But it means you work fast and you don’t have to do any editing after the fact. For a 3 minute short you could probably run through the story several times in a day this way, and simply upload the version that worked best!
Music: You gotta stay legal here. Great music can make a good film better. But you have to have the rights to put that music in your film. There are all kinds of websites that sell excellent “royalty free” music (meaning you pay a small, flat fee and get to use the music in your films). Or you could approach musicians and
EDITING: Don’t own higher-end video editing software? Don’t worry, there are other options. People have edited entire movies with a video camera and the free video editing software that comes with their home computer. Even if you don’t have a computer, you can still make
LOW-BUDGET PRODUCTION GEAR: Digital filmmakers are resourceful. There are all kinds of alternatives to expensive production gear. And we’re talking cheap alternatives.

With sites like Youtube and other podcast sites increasing like mushrooms and introduction of applications like whatsapp the scope of mobile movies is huge. “Euphoria – Joy of Giving” Synopsis: A one minute short film for the theme ‘finding peace in today’s busy city life”. The story revolves around a guy who’s caught up in his worldly commitments and a poor boy who sees everyday as a task to feed his burning hungry stomach. This persons choice is what makes the movie special.
Plot:
A socially committed man, waiting at a bus stop to attend to his commitments just to realise that it was not his day. Destiny takes him by surprise and he ends up getting a bus, but this so called destiny did not prove smooth for him and the bus ends up getting caught in traffic, a very natural and a regularly occurring phenomenon in every city. He notices a small boy entering the bus and starting to make his living, but none of the other passengers cared or bothered to help this little kid and his heart-moving cries. The guy reaches for his wallet jut to realise that he has enough change to reach his destination; confused about the realities that life is showing him; he makes his choice. A choice which he felt then would bring him ‘peace’ which mattered most to his troubled soul. He gifts the boy his last shilling and boards off the bus realising that his journey is on foot from now on; but then there strikes life’s little magic which many of us are so blind to, the bus is stuck in traffic but he chooses to move on. He has found peace not just with his inner self, but with everything around him.
Why Good Where Bad: “Euphoria- Joy of giving” is a treat to watch. It’s more like the joy of watching. This movie even though silent, speaks a lot. Sam Mammen has done a splendid job to convey those emotions which people generally ignore. The movie starts with him busy on his phone. He needs to reach somewhere really fast and the amount of hurry he is in is clearly visible on his face. This is exactly when Sam sweeps half the show. Later slowly as the movie progresses Sam gets better and by the end of the movie he already is the emblem of peace with the most peaceful pallor anyone can have on his face. This particular transformation on his face from being in haste to his introspection and reflec-
tion and finally achieving peace defines the complete story line. Just watch his face and you will know what’s happening. This is how brilliant Sam was. Though Sam stood upfront in the movie, no one can ignore the role of the director and the story. Ahammed did a splendid job as a director. The idea and effort behind the movie were clearly visible with ofcourse Sam acting as the perfect reflector. Editing was professional enough to give the movie it’s feel and flow so we have to give a thumbs up to Bala Kumaran and his work. Even though “Euphoria-joy of giving” is a splendid movie, it is falls a little short of the perfect line. The culprit somewhere being the cinematography. The camera movements could have been better at places but with a single tripod and single camera this is one of the best outputs one can get so a thumbs up to Roshan also for his good work.
“Euphoria – Joy of Givng” was selected as the best entry for Moksha Moola competition conducted by Goethe - Institut Max Mueller and L.V. Prasad Film and TV Academy, Chennai.
Background: This short Film was made for a one minute short film contest named as “Moksha Moola” The complete crew of the movie belongs from Manipal University Bangalore Campus. This movie is a part of three movie series made by this group. The other movies in this three movie series is “Serenity in Rush Hour” and “Slice of Life.”

The Bollywood 100 Cr is what we are looking at. -Vishal Kanungo
The Indian film industry has recovered from a two year slowdown in 2011. With the cricket world cup and IPL taking away four months in the first half of 2011, there were only about 40 available weekends for film releases. “Bodyguard”, “Singham”, “Ready”, “Ra.One” and “Don 2” breached the INR 100 Crs mark in domestic theatrical collections. The industry took just one year to more than double the count of films in this elite club of high revenue generating Hindi cinema. Recently, the 100 Crs club got some
new members like ‘Agneepath’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’, ‘Bol Bacchan’ & ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. In the film industry so dependent on the opening weekend box office collections, the best of the filmmakers and actors hold their breaths when their film hits release on any given Friday. Gone are the days when films were celebrated for their chartbuster music or for reaching the impressive silver jubilee at the box office. Today, the opening weekend collections – just
the first 2-3 days – can mean triumph or doom in an industry where you’re only as good as your last film. For now, the 100Crs club is steadily growing. What remains to be seen is what the next barometer of a film’s will be when this once-exclusive club becomes too crowded.
Apart from the theatrical box office takings, there are other revenue streams as well such as cable and satellite rights, music rights, DVD’s, etc. Internet and mobile phone downloads, is emerging as a potential money-spinner for studios keen to offset losses at the box office. A Hindi-language comedy “F.A.L.T.U”, which was released on Friday, is offering its entire movie soundtrack for download. The film will also be available on the Internet outside India. Last year, another Bollywood movie, “Striker”, was premiered overseas on the video-sharing web site YouTube. Until recently, Indian filmmakers could be virtually assured of high box office returns, with cinema one of the few forms of entertainment and movie-goers traditionally loyal to big name stars.
30 Cinephilia-Live the Cinema you Love Also, there is a constant shrinkage in the theatrical window since 2006 due to certain factors like DVD piracy and, the threat of new digital leisure technologies. Hence, the producers look forward to get their investment recovered at the earliest. The reason for this being a very short life span of the movie in the theatres. A very good & current example would be of the movie – “Ek Tha Tiger” that entered the 100cr. club in a very short span. The prices at the theatres were hiked by around 10-15% which helped the movie to recover the cost of making the film as soon as possible. A very recent film “Barfi” also entered the 100 cr. club. The total box office collections were around. The film, which minted Rs.34.6 crore during its opening weekend and amassed a total of Rs.58.6 Cr. over the
first week, is still going strong at the ticket window. The M & E Industry’s overall revenue is increasing with its every release. “OMG – Oh My God”, a Paresh Rawal starring movie made in a budget of 20cr. has done a business of almost 78 cr. and is still counting making its way towards 100 cr. club. This shows that movie made under big banners or high star casts are not the only ones to gross high, a good content & great filmography also fetches results. Gradually, the number of films grossing 100 cr. is in-
creasing. Earlier, only few films were able to cross this mark, the first film being Amir Khan’s “Ghajni”, “3 Idiots” being the 2nd & “Dabangg” being the next
one in the list. Very soon, the definition of successful films would change and a film grossing at least 100cr. would be called as a successful film.

The Hollywood The new breed of Superheroes -Priyarth Mukherjee The audience and the Hollywood has always welcomed super heroes with open hands. It all started with “The bold Caballero” in 1936 which had starred Zorro. Though Zorro was unable to throw web or fly, yet he became the first one of the lot. It was 15 years later that Superman flew through the theatre screens in a movie by Lee Sholem in 1951. This definitely called for Batman to step on the screens which he certainly did in the year 1966. After this until 1996 it rained superheroes. Except
for few amusing moves by Dr. Strange, Ninja Turtles, Captain America, The Mask and others it was all Batman and superman raining cats and dogs all around. Suddenly The superhero Universe took a halt. It slowed down. People started to look for reality and fantasy was subsided. This was though the lull before the Storm. No one had an idea and a new breed of super heroes was being created. The first transition was visible with the release of X-men in 2000. This was just a trailer to what was to come. Christopher Nolan acted as the pioneer of this superhero revolution and it all Started with “Batman Begins” in 2005. This opened the flood gates. And, we were looking at the 2nd generation of Superheroes in front of us.
Fantastic Four, V, X-men, Ironman, Hulk, Hancock, Wolverine, Thor, Captain America and boy this was it. The new Breed of Superheroes. You cannot miss out on them. Even if you do they are gonna come after you. They are the ultimate combination of reality, Fantasy and technology. These super heroes are invincible. You
Cinephilia-Live the Cinema you Love 33 can’t hate then you can’t ignore them all you can do is say WOW!!!! This ultimate fleet is actually making its mark and no doubt the person holding the mast and leading this march is Christopher Nolan. The New Batman series has changed the meaning of Superhero movies. These Movies are no more made to make the protagonist fly. These movies are made for us, to make us ponder on the unlimited range a human body and brain can go. These movies are inspiring life and technology and is no longer a medium of selling dreams and fantasy. This new breed, It’s real guys, it’s around us.
Superheroes are coming back, they are stronger and better. they are coming in numbers and you cannot ignore them while they ZAP across your screens. ‘Ironman 3’, ‘Man of Steel’, ‘The Wolver ine’, ‘ Thor-The dark world’, ‘Captain America- The winter soldier’ , ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’, ‘Xmen-The days of the future past’ This is what Hollywood has got for you in the coming next two years.
You can miss your own wedding but trust me, when men like Christopher Nolan, Shane Black, Zach Snyder are working on characters like these, you cannot miss on these.
This New breed is going down in the history of cinema. Story, VFX, graphics, editing, Special effects and what not. The combination of the bests this is what this new breed is all about.
