Changes Announced within Research & Development Legislation After the 2014 Autumn Statement announced an increase to the Research & Development (R&D) tax credit rate, R&D has become a topic that is cropping up more and more in the field of accountancy. The relief which has been set at a rate of 225 per cent since April 2012, has subsequently been lifted to 230 per cent for small and medium sized companies as of 1st April 2015. This means qualifying companies are gaining a greater benefit than ever before for costs they have incurred as a result of research and development activities. How this translates for claimants is that for every £100 spent on research and development, an additional £130 will be available from HMRC in the form of relief on corporation tax. Essentially this is the Government’s way of rewarding innovative businesses, to encourage future
growth which will thereby increase the country’s capacity for wealth creation. Changes have also been implemented which restrict some of the qualifying criteria for Research & Development tax credits, making the identification of qualifying expenditure even more of a specialist area. Employing an R&D tax relief specialist will enable a business to eliminate the risk of losing out on this valuable tax relief. Further to this, the longer a company waits before submitting a tax relief claim for R&D costs, the more money that company is set to lose. This is due to the fact that R&D tax claims are restricted; claims can only go back 2 open tax years – a fact that many companies undertaking research and development are unaware of. The changes to the Research & Development tax credit rate for small and medium sized companies (and also for large companies where relief has been raised to 11%) came into effect on 1st April 2015.

The insights indicates that 48% of business regard their accountant as their most trusted business adviser – only 6% thought the same of their bank and 3% of their lawyer. Based on these insights, it is clear that businesses want advisers who understand them, their business, ambitions, finance and opportunities to grow and succeed. There is a definite demand from time-starved executives for one stop advice shops. The work by the ICAEW echoes Intuit’s own findings as it indicates 71% of interviewed accountants expect their role to significantly evolve in the next five years. At the heart of this shift is cloud computing. Cloud technology is a phenomenon that is here to
stay and, if used correctly, will streamline your day-to-day tasks, freeing up more time to build those crucial client relationships and providing an opportunity to offer key commercial advice. Our research also showed that 95% of SMBs are willing to pay for business advice, but just over 30% of interviewed accountants see themselves as advisers.
