PUTTING PEOPLE IN TOUCH WITH THE LAND

KATE BEAVAN, BBC THE ONE SHOW’S RESIDENT FARMER

Straight from the small screen and onto our seminar schedule, The One Show’s resident farmer shares her behind-the-scenes story.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

We’ve assembled an unprecedented array of expert speakers covering every aspect of diversification for farms and land-owners.

TV viewers everywhere will remember Kate’s Great Trerhew Farm as the location for the first series of BBC’s ‘Lambing Live’ in 2010. Following on from the popularity of this series, the BBC asked Kate to become The One Show’s resident farmer and she has since gone on to become the health and welfare reporter for Channel 4 at Crufts. Kate is passionate about sharing her love of farming and traditional rural life, demonstrating what a valuable natural environment a farm can be and reconnecting people with the countryside and food production; all through Kate’s Country School. Offering a wide range of subjects, from lambing to cider making and shearing to wildlife identification skills, Kate combines teaching the courses with farming alongside husband, Jim, and lecturing at Coleg Gwent. It’s proved a great way to combine her belief in traditional rural skills and good animal husbandry with a successful diversification, without disrupting the everyday working of the farm.

Over the next few pages, you will find details of our keynote speakers. Every one of them has proven themselves as innovators and entrepreneurs, many of them are acknowledged as leaders in their sector – and some of them are award-winning trailblazers.

FRIDAY | HALL 4 | 14.00 - 14.30

If you’re serious about diversifying, adding a revenue stream, or starting your own rural business, these are the people you should listen to. Between them, they represent the most successful rural entrepreneurs in Britain as well as the organisations that support them and shape the business landscape around them.

This seminar is more than a chance to hear first-hand the impact that becoming a TV personality can have on your life. Kate will explain how she combines her everyday work as a farmer with lecturing and why she decided to set up her own small business, Kate’s Country School. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to hear her story.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS HOLIDAYS WITH A DIFFERENCE ALASTAIR SAWDAY

FOUNDER, SAWDAY’S SPECIAL PLACES TO STAY

One of the most popular forms of diversification in Britain today sees farms and estates capitalising on the popularity of the ‘staycation’. Inspired by his year’s leading travel groups to the hidden delights of France, Alastair set up Alastair Sawday Publishing in 1994. Special Places To Stay – both in book form and on the internet - now features 5,000 Special Places (properties) in six countries, and a very particular take on holiday accommodation that is just that little bit… ‘different’. Under Alistair’s guiding hand, Special Places To Stay encourages the breaking of rules, the avoidance of official bodies, and the ploughing of lone furrows.

Meet the visionary who has ensured the country estate that has been in his family for 300 years is still relevant and profitable in the 21st Century. Charlie Forbes Adam is the 12th generation of his family to be steward of Escrick Park Estate. Prior to being awarded the Royal Agricultural Society’s Bledisloe Gold Medal for 2012, Charlie and the estate have won the Anders Wall Award in 2010, a Europe-wide prize for ‘creating a positive rural environment,’ as well as a RICS Award for Building Conversions in 2002. Charlie has been Chairman of the Yorkshire branch of the CLA and is a Trustee of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. Mostly he floats about, losing his Cocker Spaniel, trying to read the runes and vaguely bird-watching.

FRIDAY | HALL 2 | 12.30 - 13.00

Alastair’s unique seminar draws on his extensive experience of ‘special places to stay’ to explain the benefits, potential, pitfalls, fun, hassle and delights to be had from renting out your spare space as a B&B or self-catering accommodation. The income may be considerable, or just enough to cover maintenance costs. This seminar will tackle it all in an easy and conversational way, with contributions from those among the audience who have already ‘done it’.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS A FARM STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING DAVID HORLER

THE MAN BEHIND TRACTOR TED Have you considered adding a children’s franchise to your revenue streams? David Horler explains that’s not as out there as it sounds… David Horler owns and runs an organic 500-acre family farm in Somerset. He left Cirencester in 1986 and quickly realised that, with prices for beef, lamb and cereals dropping to unprofitable levels, he would have to think innovatively about the business and its income streams. Conversion of some of the traditional low stone buildings into rural workshops began. In 2000, he met up with a childhood friend, Alexandra Heard, and they came up with an unusual idea for farm diversification. Both David and Ally had young children and were struck by how often their children wanted to watch farm machines at work. At the time there were no videos showing real life farming and so together, they produced a pilot video, Tractor Ted Bread Making. 300 copies were sold in the first month and they nervously funded the initial investment of £500 each, followed later by an investment of £10,000 which covered making the first three films.

THURSDAY HALL 3 | 11.00 - 11.30

Taking The Real Life Farming Experience Out Of The Farm And Into The Home… Go behind the scenes of Tractor Ted, the children’s multi-million pound media brand with its hit series of books and DVDs about farming and the countryside. Tractor Ted is sold in over 700 stockists in the UK, as well as in the Republic of Ireland, USA and New Zealand. This seminar will give you an insight into the history behind the brand and the exciting plans that Tractor Ted has for 2015 and beyond!

CAMPING IS MORE THAN JUST A CARRY ON DAN YATES, AWARD-WINNING CAMPING ONLINE VISIONARY When staycation meets online entrepreneur, you end up with Dan Yates and a hugely successful online business that could massively boost your revenue.

He will explain how over 70% of accommodation bookings are now online, with the trend continuing as smartphone use explodes. More importantly, he will show you how to capitalise on this. With campsite and holiday parks on Pitchup.com earning up to £100,000 each annually, Dan will show you how to reap the rewards of the ‘staycation’ online.

A GROWTH MARKET WITH PRODUCT IN GREAT DEMAND SHIRLEY BETTINSON AND TIM HEY, ALPACA EXPERTS

Don’t miss this chance to find out more about specialist livestock and how you could charge a premium for alpaca products. Shirley established Toft Alpacas near Warwickshire by investing her money and dreams in four pregnant female alpacas in 1997. Since then, they have selected and imported alpacas from Peru, Australia and the USA to improve and maintain the quality of their herd, evaluating and developing their breeding programme at every stage to now farm over 200 alpacas. Toft also processes and sells value added alpaca products and garments in their farm shop and selected European outlets. Born in Australia, Tim grew up with alpacas on his family farm and moved to England in 2002, where he now farms over 300 alpacas in Dorset with his wife and two children. As a breeder of black alpacas, Tim’s seed stock is highly sought after in the UK and throughout Europe. Tim is an alpaca judge and spends a lot of time helping customers as they establish their alpaca businesses. The fibre from Tim’s herd of alpacas is spun near Manchester and then sold to Norway, where it is processed into skiing garments.

Alpacas – The Story Behind This Global Emerging Industry Alpaca farming has become increasingly popular the world over, as demand for breeding stock and their luxurious fibre grows. During this engrossing seminar, you’ll hear why alpacas are now farmed in most countries outside of their native Peru, Chile and Bolivia. Find out how farmers and landowners in Britain are making a healthy return from breeding and selling stock to the domestic and international market, as well as value adding the fibre. Shirley and Tim will show you just how easy it is to join this growth market.

He went on to work at management consulting firm L.E.K., where his projects included the acquisition of Haven Holidays by Bourne Leisure, the holiday park industry’s top two companies. Dan also spent four years at lastminute.com as Head of Strategy and Business Development. During his time there, he advised the company on strategy, leading a number of new initiatives for the company, including the launch of the UK’s first mobile hotel booking site and an award-winning carbon offsetting tool. Ultimately, he ended up managing search engine marketing for the breakout online bookings firm. Dan struck out on his own when he founded Pitchup.com in 2009 and the awards have rolled in since then, including being listed as a Red Bull ‘Future 50 company’, Best Travel Mobile Site and Best UK Travel Website.

SEGWAYS: IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY OR GENERATE INCOME

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE Established in 1972, Blachere Illumination has developed an enviable international reputation as one of the world’s market leaders in festive and decorative illuminations. Light it and they will come. We’ve been involved in some great projects over the years - here are just a few. Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow. We created a ceiling of light in the square. This was very popular - even the Police liked it! We received an email from them asking if it could be left up all year as it had reduced crime in the area.

The Segway electric vehicle has low running costs and can be easily and safely ridden by nearly anyone. It can be used as a convenient and safe mode of transport either to improve productivity or as an income generator within a leisure activity Businesses worldwide have discovered the increased mobility and enhanced productivity the versatile and reliable Segway range (i2 SE, X2 SE and X2 Turf SE) consistently delivers. Segways were designed to ensure speed, range and manoeuvrability in varied environments.

“Segways could be an excellent way of generating revenue.” Segways are ideal if you have staff looking/needing to cover large areas quickly. They work fantastically well in airports, large factories or on industrial sites that do not enter public highways. If you have staff that need to cover

distances and perform their duties at the other end, Segways are excellent fatigue reducers and mobility vehicles - which is why so many security companies and business operators use them in a variety of roles. But you could also generate revenue using Segways as part of a leisure activity business, or even a specific event. Segways can be used for public paying tours or set up as Segway experience event centres. If you have land with interest such as a lake with migrating birds, a vinery or any other focal point where you can set up a regular tour or experience using these amazing machines, then Segways could be an excellent way of generating revenue. Pure Segway currently run two experience sites and are experts in using Segways to generate income.

FARM BUSINESS INNOVATION NOVEMBER 2014

Cinderella Castle, Walt Disney World, Florida. Having already provided the lighting for the castle in Disneyland Paris, WDW Florida had a dream that their castle would be better. Months of preparation and collaboration with the Disney Imagineers enabled that dream to come true. We even made the lights disappear

during the day. How did we do that? Well, pixie dust of course! This year, we teamed up with Estate Life to bring our expertise to the Farm Business and Country House world. Examples of how lighting gives a return on the investment includes Blackpool Illuminations that spend in the region of £2.2m per year. They attract 3 million visitors during the two months of the Illuminations, spending over £200m. That’s a lot of Kiss me Quick hats and Candyfloss! Now, you may not have that kind of budget but the principle is the same. You can create an atmosphere, a show or an event with light. We can help you do that. Visit us on stand F1044 to find out more.

Around 500 of these properties open their doors to visitors for days out, special tours, school visits, film locations, weddings and events, or as memorable places to stay. 13 million people a year visit HHA Member properties and there are 38,000 Friends of the HHA. The Association was established in 1973 to help owners conserve

these wonderful places in the interests of the nation and carries out important lobbying, advisory and marketing work on behalf of Member properties. Members range from iconic stately homes such as Blenheim Palace, Highclere Castle, Castle Howard, Knebworth House, Longleat and Burghley House, to more intimate houses such as Traquair in Scotland, Treowen in Wales and Belle Isle in Northern Ireland. Most are still private family homes and the HHA also welcomes properties that do

PREFABULOUS DIY MODULAR BUILDINGS Making the transition from farming to creating and selling your own produce is to become easier, cheaper and less stressful thanks to our new process that builds a barn within a barn.

Create A Cabin installs high quality, food safe, flexible food preparation rooms which can be built quickly and cheaply. Made-to-measure, steel panel buildings range in size from 20m² – 200m² and can be delivered within six weeks of order. These can range from jam

“Add value to your product and command a higher price.”

These innovative, waterproof buildings are compliant with all relevant safety and hygiene requirements and remove the cost, red tape and time delays often associated with new buildings. They do not require planning permission when constructed under an existing structure such as a tithe barn, workshop or Dutch barn. Having proved successful in France for the past five years, Create A Cabin is now making the transition across the Channel to help forward thinking farmers add value to their end product. Issues such as food traceability and the economic

downturn have driven consumer commitment to buying locally sourced food, so we think this is a great – and growing – opportunity.

The toilets were developed in the UK for our cool, damp climate. In hotter countries, compost toilets often rely on evaporation to get rid of urine from the toilet vault.

NatSol specialises in toilets for remote sites. They require no water, power or sewage connection and are odour free under normal operation. Over 40 years combined experience of the company directors has proved that evaporation in this country is unreliable, so we separate urine using our unique stainless steel pedestal and send it to a simple soak away. FROM DERELICT FARM BUILDING TO INCOME EARNER Are you considering diversifying and developing a holiday property? We can assist at every stage, from advising what would best suit the site in terms of development, helping with income projections for your business plan and advising on the all-important ‘look’. Mulberry Cottages make holiday letting easy by working with you to maximise your income, believing that the best results are from working in partnership with our owners. We thought a case study might best illustrate this. A Group Of Four Barns In A Farmyard Setting In Kent (One Oast House, a pair of cow byres and a large period Thatched barn). The farmer wanted to diversify into a commercial use for the barns away from his traditional long-term letting. Lack of fast broadband and good communication links precluded offices, so holiday lettings seemed the answer. The buildings obtained planning, backed by detailed

income projections and reports on employment. The barns were converted in stages to allow income to start being received on the first barn before the next was developed. The most expensive part of the build, the conversion of the main thatched barn was left until last. All units are run on a biomass boiler, as the farm has easy access

to wood. On advice from us, the complex has both a swimming pool and tennis court. The income in 2010, the first year with all four properties available, was a 17% return on investment. In 2013, this rose to 25% ROI with occupancy of 95%. The split between bookings obtained direct by the farming business and

bookings from us is currently about 50/50, although in the depths of the recession 65% came from us. We are now working closely with the farmer to identify areas where the income can continue to grow and develop. We have advised at every stage of this development, from planning the build to analysing how to continue to build income.

THE BRITISH ALPACA SOCIETY: ALPACA FARMING Alpacas are a successful alternative farming industry with rapidly growing domestic and export markets. Talk to alpaca owners and ask how these animals could bring your holding a fine return. The British Alpaca Society is dedicated to the welfare of alpacas and the education of their owners in the UK. The British Alpaca Society (BAS) provides information, support and events for alpaca owners, breeders and those interested in alpacas. It runs a state of the art pedigree breed register which is fully interactive online. The BAS is also involved in all facets of marketing and promotion for the rapidly growing domestic industry as well as supporting the growth in the European export market for stud stock and fibre.

“Alpacas have fast become one of the most sophisticated enterprises in the emerging rural industries.” From the first importation of commercial quantities of alpacas in the late 1990s, alpacas have

fast become one of the most sophisticated enterprises in the emerging rural industries. The exponential growth of the alpaca scene in the UK and worldwide has been driven by both the shortage of alpaca fibre, which is highly sort after by the Italian and Chinese processors, but also the loving and easy care nature of the alpaca. The alpaca industry is very aware that for its long term success, they must focus on the end product which is fibre. This is in contrast to many alternative farming enterprises which didn’t focus on the end product until they had gone through boom and bust cycles. The UK alpaca industry at this time is primarily a stud stock industry but is strategically focused on becoming a fibre industry.

EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF LAND – TODAY’S APPROACH Access to data, relevant to your land, has never been more available than it is today which has bred a whole new approach to managing land. Farming today is constantly changing, requiring more and more decisions to be made in a wide range of areas. It is important to keep up-to-date with these changes by using the right tools. A successful business needs to reduce energy, financial costs and lost time, and the use of technology is one of the best ways to get the information that we need in front of us to make decision making as straightforward as possible.

Today, you can have access to your RPA field boundaries and a variety of datasets from Natural England, the Forestry Commission and the Environment Agency. All of these datasets can be backed up by the relevant Ordnance Survey data for your farm.

“Technology is one of the best ways to get the information that we need.”

Weather – good or bad - always has a major impact on any business and no one can control it. There is a quote which states that “There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing” and the provision of a good canopy reduces the need for appropriate clothing! A quick internet search will show hundreds of different canopies, and this is where Outside Structure Solutions come in. We have produced an extensive product list, meaning that we become your one-stop-shop for shade and shelter. It may be as simple as a patio umbrella for your house or a huge storage tent; we can help with advice and information to help you make the best decision.

GLAMPING AND RENEWABLE ENERGY FINANCE

“GTF have a first-hand knowledge, giving the lenders confidence to lend.”

GTF are a provider of finance for the farming and estates market specialising in green technology and leisure. On the surface, there would appear to be little that connects Biomass Boilers with Tents, but there is a connection when it comes to finance. The customers are the same farms and estates that generally have large heating costs and a need to diversify, with the tourist industry being a popular choice. The similarity doesn’t stop there; both types of asset are traditionally difficult to finance, as tents provide poor security and biomass boilers have a protracted install with an element of staged payments.

GTF have a wealth of experience in providing finance in both of these sectors with their panel of lenders who not only understand the assets and their idiosyncrasies, but have a desire to lend. “Every situation is different” says Neil Baxendale, Director at GTF, “Which makes our job more enjoyable, as you never know what the next phone call will bring”. GTF like to meet all their clients face-to-face wherever they are in the country. As Neil says, “Long hours in the car are the norm, but meeting on

WHAT DO ALL COFFEE PRODUCERS DREAM OF? It’s fair to say that 99.9% would be honest if they mentioned market stability - a crucial factor in developing countries, suggests Alison Hernandez-Hall. Did you know that after oil, coffee is the second most traded commodity on the stock exchange? It’s hard then to understand why coffee farmers have such low incomes. Thankfully, there are people working to change things and hopefully, consumer voices are helping.

and Caffe Feminino are just two examples of sustainable success stories. Over the last 12 years, I have slowly built an understanding of coffee from the Highlands of Mexico, more specifically a village called Yajalon in Chiapas. I’m now studying for a Diploma in Coffee with the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe.

I grew up on a mixed farm in the Cotswolds and after completing my BTEC in Rural Studies, I spent a year in America, then wwoofed and worked around New Zealand and Australia. In 2000, I found myself in Mexico and my appreciation for a good cup of coffee was born soon after.

These can be as luxurious or Spartan as desired; they can be built fully wired and plumbed for power, lighting and heating (requiring appropriate hook-ups), or alternatively they can

be supplied with an original small wood-burning stove, a few cupboards and a bed, much like the 19th century originals. THE COUNTRYSIDE RESTORATION TRUST Our mission: protect farmed countryside, its wildlife, and the people with the knowledge and skills to look after it. As 75% of the UK’s landscape is made up of farmland, the way in which we farm it is critical to wildlife. And successful farming depends on wildlife. For example, without insect pollinators, there would be no harvest of many commercial crops. Our countryside needs a champion who understands both farming and wildlife. WHY BORING ISN’T BORING Geologic Boreholes are a UK based company, drilling boreholes across the nation. They drill and equip both water boreholes for private water supply, and geothermal boreholes for ground source heat pumps, both of which can be used on either a domestic or commercial basis. The company started out with just one employee and a cable percussion rig, working out of a barn belonging to a local farmer and an office at home. The company has now expanded to enjoy a national presence, with an extremely well respected reputation. Six years on, Geologic’s Head Office just outside of Exeter now employs 14 people and has nine different type of drilling rigs, capable of drilling holes

for a wide variety of applications The drilling of Water Boreholes for private water supply is a major part of their business. The company provides a total solution, from initial survey through to borehole drilling and pump installation, to turning on the tap and drinking your own pure, fresh water. After a full chemical water analysis, Geologic can supply and fit water treatment systems to ensure

compliance with the drinking water regulations. Drilling for Ground Source Heat Pumps goes to a depth of 80–120 metres as the ground at that depth is always at 11 degrees. The pump works rather like a fridge in reverse, taking the heat from the soil and transferring it to your domestic heating system, increasing the temperature in the process.

Geotechnical and environmental drilling is the other main part of the business and, although relatively quiet over the last few years due to the decrease in construction, Geologic are experiencing a real resurgence. Engineers need to know what the ground is doing, what it is likely to do in the future and what lies beneath the Earth’s surface.

Imagine a toilet that has no need for water, sewage systems, miles of plumbing, septic tanks or cess pits and has the freedom to be put anywhere - even places where you couldn’t put a conventional WC! A flight of fancy? No. There is such a product; a dry separating toilet that works using the design of the human body where urine is directed one way and solid material another. The design is simple, clever and almost foolproof. All the elements required to create excellent compost occur naturally within our bodies. The urine, which is

The aerobic microorganisms break down the solid matter over a period of time within the body of the toilet unit, where the process also destroys harmful pathogens and the anaerobic microorganisms that create the foul odours. There is no smell or waste, just two useful products. If you do not wish to compost, then it’s easy to incinerate. The flame toilet will dispose of all human by-products to a dry fertilised ash. It’s the ideal solution for basements, loft conversions etc. High technology for modern day living with no water or plumbing required. Composting our human by-products is not alien or distasteful, but sensible, safe, very eco-friendly and the ideal solution for all.

WASTE MATTERS Most farms are not connected to mains drainage and sewage/wastewater must be treated on site. Septic tanks do not fulfil modern requirements and standard practice now is to install sewage treatment plants. Many farms are diversifying from traditional sources of revenue and this often involves attracting people to the farm. Caravan sites, paintball centres, quad bikes, mazes, and farm shops all attract people to the farm - and people create waste that must be dealt with. Septic tanks are redundant technology. They provide no treatment of sewage and only pollute the environment. The modern solution to sewage is to install a sewage treatment plant. There are many different types of sewage treatment plant, but not all are equal. Sewage treatment plants designed for single domestic houses and public sites create a totally different type of sewage that does not suit most systems.

The key problems with sewage from public sites are as follows: Fluctuations In Use Sewage production varies from week to weekend and season to season. Sewage treatment plants are designed for constant flows.

Concentration Toilet waste is not diluted with water from showers, washing machines, etc.

Non-Degradables Items such as baby wipes, sanitary towels and tampons can cause major problems for some types of sewage treatment plant and repairs can be costly.

“People create waste that must be dealt with.”

WTE manufactures and supplies a range of different sewage treatment plants to suit all applications. For most public use sites, our Falcon® sewage treatment plant is the most suitable system and is available in a range of sizes from 6 to 5,000 people.

BRING YOUR LAND TO LIFE

More farmers than ever are now taking on business diversification to get the best from their land. Whilst there are a whole host of options, did you know that trees can open up a world of opportunity? In an industry fighting increased competition and new regulations, it’s not surprising that more than half of Britain’s farms have diversified in order to make a sustainable living. Today, camp sites, music festivals and activity centres are recurring features amongst the farming landscape. Whilst the possibilities are somewhat endless, an excellent array of farming diversification can come from trees. As the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, The Woodland Trust has been helping to protect, create and restore

woodland for over 40 years. During that time, the Trust has worked closely with farmers, landowners and agricultural organisations to provide expert advice on the ways in which trees can help with diversification projects. By planting new trees or helping to restore existing woodland, farmers can develop new business ventures such as game management and cycle hire, both of which are profitable activities. In addition, trees are an excellent tourism lure for those wanting a tranquil escape to a woodland cabin surrounded by forests, nature trails and wildlife.

DO SOLAR THE RIGHT WAY DEVON FARMER SHEDS LIGHT ON DIVERSIFYING INTO SOLAR POWER SUCESSFULLY

Mr Churchill shares his experience with us so that other land owners can benefit from the valuable lessons he learned. He explains exactly how to ensure you get the best offer for your land and what to look for in a responsible solar developer.

Firstly, we asked Mr Churchill what made him opt for installing a solar farm rather than other renewable energy technologies. He tells us, “It’s environmentally friendly and it suits the farm industry very much because it gives a secure regular income. That’s very important to me and to other farmers as the industry is struggling at the moment to make ends meet. It’s a lifeline.” “Then with solar panels you can run sheep, as I do. Having a strong brand that works for you no matter where people see it is key. Starting something new is tough; it will ask you to sacrifice more than just your time; more than just your budget; it will take a piece of you. That’s why it’s so important to have something amazing to show off at the end for all that effort and hard work. Finding a partner that can help you along your journey makes it that little bit easier, especially if you can find one that has as much passion for your business as you do. With a great portfolio and clear working practice, our team has all the right skills needed to take your idea and turn it into a reality.

Our logical approach makes the task of branding your company or idea an enjoyable, fulfilling experience by asking some simple and some notso-simple questions to get to know your business, competitors and target market. From there, we work our magic to produce concepts and possible routes for you - as the client - to consider. But we don’t stop there; we’ll then deliver a brand package that is custom designed to your needs, that could include packaging, labels, website, mobile app, game, interactive 3D - but above all - only what is right for you and your business.

Our passion for branding and new technologies means we are at the forefront of new marketing strategies, as well as making the most out of the traditional methods. If you have a new business idea or want to develop what you have already, you’ll find working with us not only a worthwhile process, but also a pain-free and enjoyable one.

OUTDOOR PIG FARMING GIVES WAY TO OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES John Knowles set up a 30 sow outdoor pig unit in 1987 on Beachy Head. After 20 years with a peak annual production of 43,000 pigs p/a he decided that mobile outdoor activities may be a fun option! In 1987, outdoor pigs appeared to be one of the few ways into farming. With not a great deal of capital required and with a strong work ethic, an equally strong set of limbs and an innovative mind, perhaps great things could be achieved.

Small successes led to a move to Norfolk to more appropriate pig pastures. Numbers grew, as did ambitions. Finding better ways of doing things through mechanisation and innovative systems reduced input costs to meet tightening pig prices and volatile feed costs. Attempts to reduce fixed costs per With the hurricane in the autumn pig led to growth and expansion. of the first year, when Sevenoaks was no long, came a wet and A combination of vote-catching ‘UK challenging winter in the less leading Europe on animal welfare than ideal location of the Sussex regulations’, Tony Blair, labelling Downs. In 2007, after 20 years, the pig business was sold and with some of the capital, a mobile climbing wall business was bought. SOWING THE SEEDS FOR SUCCESS WITH A NEW WEB ADDRESS With over 300,000 farms currently operating in the UK, how can you ensure your business stands out from the crowd? Today, the seeds for commercial success are sowed online, with thesearchguru.com revealing that “More customers than ever are using the web to find businesses and, importantly… online searches are more likely to convert to sales.” With over six billion Google searches now conducted each day and Search Engine Journal reporting that more than 75% of searchers never make it past the initial results page, it’s imperative for business owners to acquire and optimise their web presence in order to achieve commercial recognition and success. Fortunately for innovative farm business owners, the recent launch of hundreds of new domain endings – including .farm, .land, and .camp (instead

of .com or .co.uk) – means it’s finally possible to acquire a short, specific, memorable, and professional web presence which clearly signposts your identity from start to finish. Now’s the time to consider an address that matches your business name in addition to valuable generic terms (think www.british.farm) for your main site, side business, or even a promotional campaign. Still not convinced that a new web address can help your business flourish? Common sense dictates that a concise, innovative, and relevant domain name is more appealing than a long, outdated, and easily forgettable one – but did you also know that it can help boost your SEO ranking? Two independent studies (Searchmetrics and Total Websites) have recently demonstrated that

new domain endings not only appeal to potential customers but also to search engines.
