DIVERSIFICATION This year has, again, tested the resilience of land-based businesses. Between the Covid-19 pandemic, the capricious weather, and changes in agricultural policy, uncertainty has been a watchword. Diversification has shown to be crucial for all landowners, farmers and rural business owners in order to spread risks and seize opportunities. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy: there are no short cuts.
The CLA helps members realise the potential of diversification. Membership can help you make the most of the opportunities and provides professional advice to guide you past the pitfalls. The first stage is to make sure you are embarking on what will be a viable business. Given the CLA has tens of thousands of members, there’s a good chance someone else has already done something similar and you will be able to exchange views and learn from their experience. That’s what the CLA network does. It will all be valuable information for your business plan, which is an essential part of the process. There are some considerations that apply to every new business and the most important is to ensure you have a potential market and that you can make a profit from that market. There are so many opportunities: caring for and enhancing the environment, creating new woodlands, developing affordable housing, new crops and production systems, and many more. Get advice and support from established retailers Recent months have seen farm shops across the UK flourish through challenging times. The importance of fresh, local, healthy and readily available produce has become more apparent in recent times, and with the likes of even Jeremy Clarkson extolling the virtues (and hard work!) of farmers and farm shops with his recent TV show, the public conscience has never been more focussed on the many benefits of rural retail. As ‘normality’ begins to reappear, the Farm Shop experience continues to appeal to customers both old and new. Rob Copley, who owns Farmer Copleys near Pontefract in West Yorkshire, said: “Food quality and provenance, low food miles, and an enjoyable shopping experience are all unique selling points of farm shops, which set us apart from the supermarkets. Setting up and running a farm shop is by no means an easy ride, but those in farming and agriculture are used to hard graft, and the benefits can be fruitful”. Rob is also chairman of the Farm Retail Association, a national support network of Farm Shops, PYO’s and Farmers Markets across the UK.
Rob said: “If you’re daunted at the prospect of starting a farm retail business, and don’t know where to start, get in touch with us. Most farm shops begin with no experience of running a retail and hospitality business. We’ve got a whole host of members who have ‘been there, done that’ and we can help you avoid many of the mistakes we made in our early years. We also work with reputable suppliers whose services are bespoke to farm shops. We can point you in the right direction and help you get started.” Key points: • There is a massive appetite among consumers for ‘farm to fork’ • Do your research and have a plan. Visit nearby farm shops and think about who your customers would be • A business plan (or feasibility report) is crucial. It can be invaluable when applying for grants and funding, and perhaps more importantly will allow you to assess the viability and potential of your plans • Be yourselves – having a personality and a strong identity is really important • Future proof your business with a larger planning permission than you need to start with • Trust yourselves – you’re instincts are usually right!
