THE “INDUSTRY 4.0” REVOLUTION: PARIS REGION
ON THE FRONT LINES OF FINTECH Around the French capital, industrial firms, institutions and startups are defying the laws of time and space to build – today – the industry of the future. Welcome aboard their time machine. It is always difficult to measure, beforehand, the impact of a technological revolution. The one that is currently giving birth to Industry 4.0 is no exception to this rule, to the point where it even proves difficult to provide a precise definition or specify its exact scope. After all, doesn’t every company care about its future? Recognising the limitations of the buzzword, François Cuny, Executive Officer at the Systematic Paris-Region competitiveness cluster, offered his thoughts on the theme
of the digital revolution. Along with a very clear definition. “For Systematic, the industry of the future comes from the crossbreeding of traditional markets (automotive, materials, chemicals, etc.) with new technologies from the digital domain, such as 3D printing, augmented reality and robotics. “This furnishes industrial firms with new opportunities for design, production and even distribution.” QED!
The French Ambition for the Industry of the Future Boasting a rich expertise in both the industrial and digital sectors, France has set itself the goal of becoming a world leader in this technological revolution. In spring 2015, the government presented its “Industry of the Future Project (Projet Industrie du Futur),” designed to support the industrial modernisation of every French business. To implement this policy in the field, eleven professional federations and training organisations launched the “Industry of the Future Alliance (Alliance Industrie du Futur)”. This organisation coordinates the initiatives, projects and activities to promote the modernisation and transformation of French industry. It focuses on four priority areas: automation, digitalisation of the value chain, additive manufacturing and energy efficiency.
Making the Paris Region a Leader The journey toward Industry 4.0 is, without doubt, farthest ahead at the regional level. In the Paris Region, the local authority has been carrying out its “Plan Industries Ile-de-France,” which supports local micro-businesses and SMEs to ensure their successful transformation. “This race will be won at the local level,” said Cuny. “For a successful transformation, you must communicate, learn and understand each other.” The “Factory of the Future” component of the Industry of the Future Project features seven key areas of support for local industry (see below). These actions will promote the digital transformation of Paris Region factories, but also make them more human, simpler and safer. For example, the “Robot Start” program will allow SMEs to benefit from a robot in their production facility for a limited period. It’s a great way to assess the economic and organisational advantages of automation before making an investment. And to confirm – once and for all – that Industry 4.0 will be created via concrete initiatives, rather than convoluted definitions.
