Is Franchising Your Best Choice… if so,Which Brand To Choose And How Can You Fund The Investment? Franchising plays an increasingly important role in supporting enterprising individuals who are setting up their own business, as it provides them with the reassurance of a proven model as well as initial training and continuing support throughout the life of the business. But how do you decide that franchising is the right step for you and if it is then which brand should you select from the bewildering choice available? The great news is help is at hand. Lloyds Bank in conjunction with the British Franchise Association has developed essential support you to fully prepare yourself to become a franchisee through a free, online educational programme called the Prospect Franchisee Certificate (PFC), which will help you to maximize your chances of franchising success. The franchise model of ‘self-employment with support’ generates thousands of stories of people successfully transforming their lives by going into business for themselves but not by themselves. By taking the course and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the franchising model, you’re putting yourself in the best possible position to join these success stories. It is a mistake to believe that investing in a franchise brand offers any form of guaranteed business success; it doesn’t! There is a great deal of hard work and determination needed to establish the

business in your chosen location or territory. Ethical franchisors will want to ensure as far as possible that you are the right fit for their network and alarm bells should be ringing if you are offered a franchise without being made to jump through a few hoops to assess your own suitability. You need to carefully research your options before signing on the dotted line and parting with your hard earned savings. Most people understand the need to thoroughly check out the franchise brand, industry sector, local market, financial projections, the level of support provided, legal agreement and to speak to as many existing franchise owners as possible, however they often neglect one of the most important steps which is to reflect on their own skills, attributes and motivations.

People who come from a systems-based background are likely to have a higher success rate in franchising as they already know the benefits of following the model. So if you have a stubborn streak or are independently minded think very carefully about whether franchising is the right option for you. There is nothing wrong with these personality traits, and I recognize them in me, but investing in a franchise system is possibly a wrong choice for these people.

A period of self-reflection as to whether you are suited to franchising is often overlooked and could prevent costly mistakes and even potential business failure. If you are someone who is very entrepreneurial or wants to reinvent the wheel then franchising is not for you and you would likely be more suited to setting up your own independent business from scratch.

Methodical research is the key to owning a successful franchise that helps you achieve your own goals. There is usually plenty of information available online both positive and negative about the brands you are considering to help you decide whether you wish to take the next step to investigate further.

If you’ve challenged the boss in the past and openly disagreed with the way things were done by leaders then question whether franchising is right for you. Franchising is all about following a system so if you find any difficultly in following the rules save yourself potential heartache and don’t invest in a

This is an essential step in deciding whether a franchise brand you are researching is the right investment opportunity for you and is often not given sufficient attention by prospective franchisees. Speak to as many existing franchisees as possible before you make any decision. The franchisor may well wish to manage the process, however you should be allowed to speak to whoever you like and as many of the franchisee network you wish to enable you to make an informed decision about the franchise opportunity. By carefully selecting your questions existing franchisees can reveal a lot about the opportunity and the franchisor’s attitude to supporting their network. This may raise concerns or indeed give you comfort about the big decision you will need to make about committing to the franchise or not.

Don’t be rushed into making your decision and if you feel pressurized into making a commitment before you are ready to do so then be prepared to walk away. Ethical franchisors will be aware that you are making a significant commitment and will give you all the information required for you to be able to make your decision in your own time. Before you make your final decision speak to the bank’s franchise team to get their view on the viability of the franchise brand you are researching. If it is an established franchise brand it is likely that the bank will already have a track record of supporting franchisees and may be able to give you some valuable insight. Once you’ve decided franchising is your chosen route to self-employment and you’ve selected a brand to invest in, you may need some help planning. Benjamin Franklin supposedly once said ‘if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail’ and that still rings true today. I don’t believe that anyone sets out to fail but most people starting their own business for the first time will have never prepared a business plan before and wouldn’t know how to start writing one. Banks will require a business plan to set up a bank account and consider financial support for a business. Any lender will want a potential franchisee to demonstrate that they understand their chosen market and that they will be able to meet the financial commitment they are taking on.

Most banks will be able to provide a business plan template detailing what information should be included in the document however support from the franchisor is essential in developing an effective business plan as well as realistic profit projections. The business plan should be punchy and a common mistake is to make it too detailed. Ensure that it grabs the bank manager’s interest. The presentation of the plan is important to create maximum positive impact and you should practice its delivery before speaking to a lender so that you come across professionally. Think of those entrepreneurs on BBC’s Dragons Den programme. From the outset, many don’t stand a chance of securing the investment they are seeking because their presentation is poorly conceived, or they don’t have a good understanding of the key financial information. Consequently, they are unable to establish their own creditability and project confidence in their business when challenged by the likes of Peter Jones or Deborah Meaden. Similar to the Dragons, bank managers will ask challenging questions about the plan and expect a business owner to be able to answer those questions confidently. It is therefore important that any business owner understands all aspects of their plan including the figures and any assumptions that have been used. It is for this reason that I would recommend that the owner has close personal involvement in producing

their plan. It is too important to abdicate responsibility and to leave it to someone else to write. Let the bank manager have a copy of the business plan in advance so they can prepare for the meeting. The franchisor can really add value by preparing new franchisees so they know what to expect and how to secure the backing from their chosen bank. It is often assumed that a business plan is needed just to secure funding. Whilst this is an important benefit of producing a business plan it can also assist with the management of the business such as monitoring the on-going performance against the original benchmarks and identifying areas for development and potential risk. The plan is a working document and should be regularly reviewed and updated as the business develops. When looking to finance a franchise business it is best to approach the bank’s franchise department, as they regularly evaluate franchise brands and monitor the on-going performance of franchisees that bank with them. They are best placed to offer the professional guidance you’ll need rather than a locally based bank manager. The level of finance available from a bank will depend upon the strength of the franchise system as well as the individual business plan. Typically for well established franchises the bank will lend up to seventy per cent of the total set up costs including

working capital. For newer, less established franchise systems the amount of finance available maybe lower. Typically lenders will look at unsecured lending up to £25,000 however for greater sums the bank will probably require security, which commonly will be a legal charge over a residential property with sufficient equity. Don’t be put off they isn’t any security to offer the bank. The Government backed Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme maybe available for those who have a strong business proposal, but who lack security that the banks usually require. It is sensible to have a contingency reserve fund to fall back on in case the business takes longer to get off the ground than originally anticipated.
