THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA To expand a business over to the USA is seen by some as a leading ambition and the gateway to riches. Having the world’s largest economy with a GDP of over $17 trillion which is around 22% of the gross world product and a consumer market of more than 310 million people, the country offers a scale of opportunity and the potential reward a visiting business may not find anywhere else on the planet. In recent years the country has gone through a long period of change, but with change, comes opportunity. Huge reforms have reshaped the country and with the right ideas, ambitions and approach, the USA remains an attractive as ever setting for international business expansion and success. With an abundance of natural resources, being a superpower in terms of technology and infrastructure along with a healthy labour market that helps to support its population of more than 318 million, the country’s demand for products and services continues to be prominent. In addition to this, the United States has a free trade agreement with 19 other countries that leads to access being provided to a further 415

million customers for their goods and services. As a result of this, the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has served as a critically important service to the US economy not only in terms of value but for its appeal for potential investors. However, such a wealth of opportunity cannot come without hazards to potential investors. The USA is, of course, a nation split into 50 separate states and this brings a variety of different state and local regulations that demand a good understanding of tax, commercial and labour laws. The intensity of competition that comes with trying to expand into the USA makes it a complex marketplace. Therefore, for any expanding business it is essential to have a deep depth of knowledge of the environment they wish to operate in or risk being left behind. Despite the similarities in language and the history between both the USA and UK, doing business in the USA still means operating in a completely different culture, where fundamental differences in protocol and procedure must be carried out sufficiently. This notion means research and preparation is a mandatory component in order to succeed in ‘the land of opportunity’.

The country offers a scale of opportunity and potential reward a ‘‘ visiting business may not find anywhere else on the planet.

DONALD TRUMP AND BRITISH TRADE Donald Trump’s election as the 45th President of the United States saw the climax to one of the most bruising US presidential election battles for many years. A campaign interwoven with populist policies on border security and aggressive rhetoric regarding immigration were amongst the numerous incendiary themes to divide the country. Another of the president-elect’s contentious stances was on trade – which included imposing hefty tariffs on Chinese-made goods if they fail to reform trade relations with the US and the ending of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement Trump has been heavily critical of. The Trump campaign’s trade policies resonated in the country’s blue-collar areas such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. All of which have seen many jobs go to foreign competitors over the last few decades. He has defied the Republican Party’s policy by rejecting free trade and backing tariffs to protect the US’ industries from “unfair competition”. A great deal of Trump’s attention on trade as highlighted by his website focuses on the problems he sees with the USA’s relationship with China, where he feels the current deal is unfairly weighted in China’s favour. There is no mention of the UK in the website’s section on trade. The protectionist policies laid out by the Trump campaign target the cheap manufactured goods brought into the country which have put American manufacturers out of business. Britain on the other hand provides high-end services meaning that UK firms shouldn’t fear any new trade-blocking barriers, well at least for the time being. The UK has long liked to think it enjoys a special relationship with the United States - a big part of that is down to trade. The UK is currently the world’s second biggest exporter of services and the United States takes in more of these than any other country on earth. Nonetheless, the election of a man coming from outside of the traditional political establishment means potential impacts on UK-US policymaking could be forthcoming.

The UK is currently the world’s second biggest exporter of services and the United States takes in more of these than any other country on earth; but the election of a man coming from outside of the traditional political establishment means potential impacts on UK-US policymaking could be forthcoming.

18

There are signs that the UK could be treated differently to other countries, however. Back in May when Brexit was looming large, Trump, a fervid supporter of Britain’s exit from Europe, said in an interview: “Britain’s been a great ally. They’ve been such a great ally. They’ve gone into things they shouldn’t have gone into, for example going into Iraq. With me, they’ll always be treated fantastically”. Trump went on to further address his stance on the UK by saying “I’m not going to say front of the queue but it wouldn’t make any difference to me whether they were in the EU or not. You would certainly not be back of the queue, that I can tell you”. The UK’s future trading partnership with the USA will all come down to the extent of Trump’s opposition to free trade and with the President’s official reign at the White House underway, the picture of just how ‘special’ the UK’s relationship with the USA is, will soon become a lot clearer.

THE FUTURE OF TRADE AFTER BREXIT At present, approximately 44% of Britain’s goods and services exports went to other EU nations, meaning that the EU is our largest trading partner, considerably bigger than the second largest – the US - which accounted for 17% of Britain’s exports.

On the 29th March 2017, the Brexit starting pistol was fired as the UK government delivered a letter to the President at the European Council, Donald Tusk, in turn triggering Article 50. The action of triggering Article 50 allows a country a time frame of two years to negotiate new arrangements to coincide with no longer being subjected to the EU treaties. Despite the race firmly underway to reach an agreement for the UK to leave the European Union by 29th March 2019, much like the whole process of Brexit, there are still many uncertainties. If no agreement is in place by the aforementioned date, then there will be no provisions for legal and trading relations between the UK and the bloc. Fuelling the ambivalence to the situation, Theresa May has issued a warning that she is, in fact prepared to end negotiations altogether if she doesn’t get what she deems sufficient by stating “No deal for Britain is better than a bad deal for Britain”. Currently, Britain is part of the EU single market but one of the key areas of change comes with Britain having to reach a new trade agreement with the EU. This could lead to as-yet-uncertain changes to the framework for exporting and importing goods and inconvenience the continuation of trade services between Britain and the EU. Negotiations could drag on for as long as five years or so until a deal is reached, if any. As for now, the UK will trade with the EU under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, meaning UK exporters will pay new EU import tariffs and face non-tariff barriers. In addition to this, UK services - 80% of the UK’s economy - would lose the preferential access into the EU single market.

As for now, the UK will trade with the EU under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, meaning UK exporters will pay new EU import tariffs and face non-tariff barriers.

Britain will also have to renegotiate deals with the countries that were involved in the free trade deals made in conjunction with the EU, leaving a total of 53 countries that include Canada, South Korea, and Singapore. At present, approximately 44% of Britain’s goods and services exports went to other EU nations, meaning that the EU is our largest trading partner, considerably bigger than the second largest – the US - which accounted for 17% of Britain’s exports. The Government will now be considering all potential trade models for a post-Brexit Britain, including taking on the EU’s free trade deals by using the UK’s new independence to cut taxes and regulations that in turn, increase the power of the deals being made with countries around the world. The future outlook of British trade is unclear, but as a large market, there is a clear incentive for other countries to negotiate a deal. In these times of trade and economic uncertainty, exporters need professional advice and guidance more than ever.

EMERGING EUROPE For the first time in a long time, Europe’s economy is doing better than forecasted. Impressively, Europe’s central, eastern and southeastern countries are performing so well that, in terms of growth and employment, they could soon be outperforming France and Germany. Fighting against adversity, the economy of Europe has contended with a host of potentially derailing occasions; crucial elections, Brexit and of course, the election of Donald Trump over in the USA. Despite this economic growth, the general consensus for members from the countries that are part of the European Union remain conflicted. The feeling towards both the bloc and the shared currency of the Euro continues to be of worry as questions escalate around the future of the European project. On the back of Brexit, as many as five countries that include powerhouses Netherlands, France and Germany are set to see their opposition to the EU come to fruition as populist parties driven by anti-euro campaigns are gaining traction and support in each respective country. The fact that cannot be disputed though is that on the whole, the eurozone is in the midst of staging quite the impressive comeback. Last year, the eurozone outperformed the might of the US, by reaching a GDP of 1.8% where as, across the atlantic reached 1.6%. Notable high performers are Spain where GDP increased by 3.2%, Germany

achieved a respectable 1.9% increase and in Ireland, growth reached an impressive 4%. Many of the less powerful European countries are also recording steady growth as countries like Albania, Serbia and Romania, all achieved improved rates despite facing some external pressures. For the most part, countries are achieving respectable economy increases whilst successfully bringing down the levels of unemployment. The sticking point comes with the relationship that the economy and politics have, which for decades has experienced a less than simple coalition. With a lot of calls for change regarding the pioneering

factors within the current European economy, it must be said that changes need to be made in order to strengthen the economic climate while keeping the wellbeing of each country’s population at the forefront. Going forward, despite the improvements of GDP growth for Europe’s economy being something of a recent trend, it provides an appealing platform for future stability and further growth for Europe’s economy. The cynical views shared in opposition to things like the European Union and the Euro have a good chance of easing if these positive developments continue and the effects become noticeable to the masses.

With a population of over 900 million people and thanks to its recent growth, there is now a rising middle class to provide both skilled labour and local customers for products. This recent growth has also seen massive improvements in regional and national infrastructure as well as communications that both benefit overseas trade. THE INDUSTRIES TAKING YOU GLOBAL The successful globalisation of a company can lead to an exponential increase in revenue and open up a whole new set of customers, cultures and opportunities. The four main sectors are e-commerce, manufacturing, retail and technology with all of them presenting different prospects. So, which sector offers the best opportunity for you?

E-COMMERCE E-commerce acts as the heartbeat and reason for the exponential growth of history’s largest marketplace; the webbased marketplace. The minute a company chooses to launch online and embrace the web marketplace, it puts them into the realm of competing as an instantly recognisable international performer. The benefits of becoming a participant in this world are endless, as the door to receive custom from new countries, continents and cultures becomes readily available. Perhaps the most eye-opening study was made by OC&C Strategy Consultants, PayPal and Google who concluded that by 2018, the UK, US, Germany and China, who together have the four biggest online shopping markets in the world will all double in size over the next three years as consumers who buy their goods through the Internet will continue to increase. Sales figures in these four countries over this time will grow by a staggering £320bn which will expand the size of the online market to at least £645bn. The real driving force in this drastic rise is the increased development and usage of smartphones. Mobile devices are becoming more and more popular and with the number of smartphone users set to increase to over 2.6 billion by 2019, this device-based method of shopping will become the main compensator for falling in-store figures. With this ever-prominent shift from the

22

traditional store-based framework, 2017 will see a further increase in the number of retailers who are looking to invest heavily in their digital operations in order to attract and reach a whole new world of consumers. At Going Global 2017, you will be able to learn the key issues that need to be considered when entering into the burgeoning world of e-commerce and how to find your way in the world’s largest marketplace.

MANUFACTURING In the 1970s, the UK suffered a sharp decline within their manufacturing industry resulting in a disappointing contribution of just 25% GDP. In present day, the UK currently stands as the 11th largest manufacturing nation in the world. UK manufacturing now accounts for 44% of total exports out of the country according to the EEF.

The demand and desire for UK’s consistently innovative and quality products remains strong throughout the world. This notion lays down the opportunity for the potential to sell products in a new country to a wider range of customers and experience rapid growth.

The UK contributes around £6.7tr to the global economy currently and maintains a

credible reputation in the automotive, aerospace and pharmaceutical sectors. Although the outlook for the UK manufacturing sector has been rather grim in recent years, further forecasts by the EEF have stated that car making, aerospace and the recently rejuvenated pharmaceutical sector will drive growth in the coming years and lead to an abundance of new jobs created. However, the UK’s weaknesses in key export markets and the poor strength of the pound is causing adverse effects by making the UK’s goods more expensive abroad. The world of global manufacturing is one that is dominated by the continent of Asia. Asia’s power and scale leads them to produce roughly half of all of the world’s goods. There dominance is certainly not under threat any time soon as China remains tightening its firm grip on manufacturing despite the rise of wages. However, the demand and desire for UK’s consistently innovative and quality products remains strong throughout the world. This notion lays down the opportunity for the potential to sell products in a new country to a wider range of customers and experience rapid growth. Like everything in business, benefits come with risk taking and those risks need to be known for any prospective entry into the manufacturing world. International trade has to be approached sensibly so that the benefits can be maximised and the risks can be nullified. Going Global will shed light on the challenges you will face if setting up a business in international manufacturing and provide the guidance you need to succeed.

RETAIL The retail sector has seen a real resurgence since the catastrophic effects of the recession which left many sectors, including retail, reeling. In recent years sector sales have seen a rise back to form, with recordings being made as the best since before the recession. However, this success faces an increasing challenge in the form of the rapid advances of customer behaviour. These developments mount pressure upon existing business models and exasperate profit margins.

The retail sector has seen a real resurgence since the catastrophic effects of the recession which left many sectors, including retail, reeling.

The positives are that with the changing of times, new opportunities arise. Royal Mail conducted a study which found that a lot of smaller online retailers have begun to focus and thrive beyond Europe in the world of exports. Australasia saw interest from UK retail SMEs more than double last year to 20%. Asia is also a region of great interest that holds significant sales potential. Europe, however, remains the prime target for exports as 48% of SME retailers aim to begin selling their products within the Eurozone this year. The USA presents the greatest opportunity for small UK online retailers in the next five years, according to

30% of the SMEs involved in the research. Opportunities exist for retailers looking towards overseas expansion but a significant amount of knowledge is required in order for such a move to achieve success. The knowledge needed involves understanding that global supply chains must be agile and robust in order to withstand local market demands and business needs while also knowing the infrastructure of your supply chain, its potential and its limitations. Going Global will provide the information and advice you need if you are looking at establishing a retail business overseas. We will tell you what you need to know on the latest international markets as well as what you need to know in creating your retail business – pricing, branding, routes into markets, premises, and much more.

TECHNOLOGY The information technology sector is one that will consistently thrive due to the fact that hardware and software are integral parts to nearly every major global industry. At a time of stunted growth and turbulence for the economy, many countries are in need for a route that can rejuvenate growth and create new jobs. Digital technologies in particular, will continue to improve economic growth and as a result, create millions of jobs. The movement also enables innovation and development amongst those in the sector. Information technology is a key component

in the world’s economic growth. The industry classifies as one of the world’s most prosperous due to its exquisite encouragement for increased productivity within the developed world. Technology will continue to be a reliable fixture amongst the global economic output, with a projected sum of $1.36 trillion set to be accumulated by the year 2020 according to research by Accenture and Oxford Economics. From this, China would feel the most impact with a predicted contribution of a staggering $410 billion.

The technology sector, in particular digital technologies, will continue to boost economic growth, directly create millions of jobs, and also enable innovation and development

Among all the emerging economies, India comes in second with $101 billion, closely followed by Brazil with $97 billion. Factors such as the volume of transactions conducted online and the use of cloud or other technologies to streamline processes will boost this contribution as technology undoubtedly develops further as the years pass by. Going Global 2017 will provide information about all of the sector’s opportunities that exist and will deliver the advice and knowledge needed to make an impact in the market.

Availability of high qualify labor Serbia is one of the rare remaining locations in Europe where technicians and engineers are still searching for jobs rather than companies jumping out if it’s socks trying to complete their shop floor roster. With unemployment rate ranging from 16% at general population to 43% at population younger than 30 y/o, Serbia makes more than abundant pool of talents and manpower for even the most demanding investment projects.
