Consumer preferences and sustainability concerns have significantly changed, impacting the meat and poultry packaging sector. The packaging should be able to protect the freshness and quality of the meat or poultry product, but as well as being able to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

BEVERAGES

Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including water, juices, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages, have a significant packaging footprint. Brands are focusing on reducing singleuse plastic bottles, exploring alternatives like glass, aluminium cans, and cartons.

FOOD DELIVERY

There is a growing appetite for takeaways in the UK. Brits spend an average of £11.2 billion annually, therefore environmentally friendly packaging solutions are crucial to our effort to protect the environment.

A green claims code is a set of guidelines that governs accurate environmental statements made by products or businesses, aiming to prevent misleading claims and promote transparent communication about sustainability attributes. It ensures that claims related to reduced environmental impact, recyclability, and other eco-friendly practices are credible and authentic.

THROWAWAY CULTURE WASTE

The practice of throwaway culture perpetuates environmental concerns through excessive waste generation and resource consumption. Conversely, sustainable packaging aims to address these issues by prioritising responsible material usage, reduced waste, and long-term environmental considerations. Adopting sustainable packaging practices can contribute to a more environmentally conscious approach to consumption and waste management.

Packaging waste is one of the biggest culprits of landfill waste worldwide – in fact, food and drink packaging accounted for the largest share of plastic packaging waste thrown out by households in the UK in 2022.

SUPERMARKETS

According to the Environmental Investigation Agency and Greenpeace UK reports, leading supermarkets are responsible for producing more than 1.2 billion plastic bags for fruits and vegetables and 1.1 billion single-use bags. With that being said, By 2025 at the latest, supermarkets intend to make all of their plastic packaging completely reusable, recyclable, or compostable.

AGRICULTURE PRINT & LABELLING

Printing & labelling is sometimes forgotten about when it comes to packaging. We also need to be conscious of printing and labelling techniques that minimise waste and utilise eco-friendly materials. Compostable labels and ecofriendly inks are a great place to start!

Sustainable packaging solutions should be actively considered by farmers who are wanting to stay current and help their local communities, which also increases their brand image as well as reputation as an ecofriendly business.

Working with Gousto, Morro created the world’s first edible stock cube wrapper. This breakthrough innovation enables brands to replace plastic, whilst offering consumers a unique experience: packaging they can eat!

Around the world 855 billion sachets are produced and used annually, accounting for a significant proportion of ocean plastic pollution. This innovation has the power to dramatically reduce this waste and make a significant contribution to reduce the 19-23 million tonnes of plastic waste that enters freshwater and marine ecosystems annually.

For Gousto alone, the market potential of this material is huge, replacing not just stock cube wrappings but all plastic films within their recipe boxes. Morro’s innovative technology could remove 15.6 tonnes of plastic per year from Gousto boxes.
