SOIL MOISTURE MAPPING This article was contributed by Black Swift Technologies. Learn more about their business here! Through a NASA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award, Black Swift Technologies (BST) in collaboration with the Center for Environmental Technology (CET), created an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) able to provide a level of detail and resolution, both in terms of higher spatial and temporal resolution, previously unobtainable through traditional satellitebased remote sensing techniques. Supplementing images provided by NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite with these high resolution, low altitude measurements can greatly improve soil moisture data resulting in more accurate landslide and flash flood predictions... MEET THE HEROES MEGAN CRANDALL Director, National Communications Strike Team - BLM In 2008, Megan moved west to work for the Bureau of Land Management where she has held numerous roles, from public affairs officer to communications director, division chief and currently, director of the BLM’s national communications strike team. The team provides traditional public affairs support to the BLM Headquarters communications directorate and crisis communications work whenever and wherever needed—from Burns, Ore., during the takeover of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge to Area 51 for the very interesting “Alienstock” event. Megan has also enjoyed working on crisis communications planning and vulnerability audit design and implementation for both the BLM and the Department of the Interior.
