SITUATION OF THE MONTH Powerful Earthquake Causes Massive Shaking in New Zealand According to the U.S. Geological Survey, New Zealand’s most recent earthquake has a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 which struck 147 miles in Gisborne on the North Island. It occurred 8:27 EST on Friday, March 5th which prompted authorities to issue a warning for New Zealand residents to evacuate. Weather.com published an official statement in regards to a tsunami warning from New Zealand’s National Emergency Management that was released immediately after the earthquake, “Based on current scientific advice and information from coastal tsunami gauges there is no longer a threat to land areas. People who have evacuated can now return home”. See Full Article
