Congratulations!
The Graduation Ceremony is a PS1 rite of passage. Each year, each graduate stands in front of parents, teachers, and fellow students to address the crowd. This experience is incredibly moving as the graduates share their words of wisdom before heading off to middle school.
We are excited to share this Class of 2024 Grad Book (containing all of the student speeches, parent and Head of School tributes, and Moving Up words from all of their years at PS1).
We hope you enjoy!

Seven Years at PS1
I remember the first time I stepped foot in PS1 and all the bubbles surrounding me. I knew I was going to be happy here. From the moment I walked in Red class, I felt welcome. I remember riding a scooter to school almost every day, timing how long it took to get from house to school. But unfortunately, nothing lasts forever.
It was time to move to Green class. I learned so much this year, especially about the ocean. My year in Green class flashed before my eyes, and before I knew it, I was moving to Middles, but this time it would be different because that’s when Covid hit.
It was weird doing school from home, but I got used to it. There were some upsides and some downsides. On the upside, I didn’t have to wake up too early, but the downside was that I didn’t get to see my friends every day. Then there was an option to go back to school, the other option was to stay on Zoom with some other people who weren’t ready to go back to school yet. I was one of those people.
I remember the first day back at school and being reunited with my friends. I learned so many new things that year and had so many dance parties. The year flew by so fast and just like that I was moving to Olders. Olders was a blast from working on the Boston Colony to asking Pedro if I could watch Chelsea games in the project room (Go, Chelsea!). But now I’m graduating. Realizing I’ll never be able to relive Youngers, never go back to that time. But now it’s time to start a new adventure.
I’ll always remember PS1 and the amazing memories from my time here. Thank you to my parents and teachers for helping me throughout the years, to my friends whom I’ve met along the way, and to my friends whom have been by my side since day one.
Words from Jennifer and Mark Humphrey:
Dear Anaïs,
You are kind, loving, creative, thoughtful, strong, and wise. You know exactly who you are with confidence and grace. All you have learned over the past 7 years while at PS1 will always be a part of you. We are beyond proud of you and love you so very much!
“It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s what you do with your dancin’ shoes.”– Grease
We know you will soar in your dancing shoes, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing things you will do!
Love Always, Mommy & Daddy
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Anaïs, you are a warm and kind human being, quick to make space for others both physically and in a conversation, encouraging others while still articulately stating your piece. You are engaged and interested in what is put in front of you, fun to be with, and happy to make your mark alongside others, without a need to create opportunities to lead from the front. An artist, swimmer, English football fan, and lover of music, you dance into your family’s rooms each morning to wake them up. An independent learner who is also willing to ask questions, you have the confidence to give a try to any task, even if you are not sure how to proceed. You do not see asking for help as negative, but instead recognize your own power to advocate for what you need. You are mature and grounded, and as a thoughtful, value-driven, and honest individual. Your understated presentation, accompanied by your commitment to hard work and engagement, allow us to appreciate all the ways in which you are true to yourself.

Three Years at PS1
I’m standing underneath this amazing oak tree thinking about the good times. The good times are pier jumping, and after getting a delicious hot chocolate in Crail, Scotland. The good times like playing with my Kenyan friends when I was living in Africa. Playing hidy-tig on Guy Fox Night and running for my life while my brother chased me because I ate some of his chocolate. Getting hit in the face with a sandball by random strangers at the beach. The time when I was screaming “Love is an Open Door” from frozen at the top of my lungs. These are good times. Nothing is forever. There is always a low point, but thinking of or about the good times all the time will probably make things worse, I can speak from experience. I wish I could tell my younger self these words, “Instead of living in the past, be present and make more good memories.” I spent close to two years thinking about the good times in Scotland, but I should’ve been making and having more good memories in America. If I went back, who knows what I would have done differently.
Now I’m standing here not just thinking about the times in Scotland but the good times in America. Here at PS1, I have made so many friends, for life. And with this, it is time to say goodbye. “Thank You” to my friends who are bonkers, to my family who have always been there, and to my teachers who have helped me on my way. And I have one more thing to say, “Slay, the day away.”
Words from Hazel Mall and David Mackenzie:
Arthur - My Darling
You’re graduating in so many ways
We came to someplace new
And you thrived and blossomed and grew
You faced the challenges
And we are so proud of you
We love you so much.
Thank you PS1 for nurturing our beautiful son.
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Arthur, you are creative, quick, and always ready to engage in conversations and discussions on any topic. You enjoy mathematical thinking, move expeditiously and flexibly through ideas, and are always ready to consider a different way of looking at information. You lead with being fun and playful, with a thoughtful and reflective nature. You happily engage with children of all ages in many different types of physical play from gymnastics to basketball. You are socially interested and aware, eager to build relationships and always willing to show up. You take the work of conflict resolution seriously, owning your own behavior when necessary and respectfully and articulately asking for what you need from others in ways that elevate the process. You are a welcome and welcoming member of the group who adds greatly to the experience of all.

Azumi Nomoto
Three Years at PS1
My PS1 journey has felt like a book. And in this story I made so many friends and have worked with so many great teachers. Three years ago, when I started at this campus, I would have never been able to imagine myself up here giving a speech in some of my final moments at PS1. I am so happy that I am able to give my speech, surrounded by all of my friends, with memories that will last a lifetime.
Chapter One, the first year. In the beginning, I walked through the brown gates and saw many new faces. I soon started learning my way around the school. Making friends was not hard. After the first day I had already made plans with my new friends. That was only after the first day. After the first week, we had plans for the next few months. In Indigo class, as a fourth grader, I got to experience non-virtual school for the first time in one and a half years. I spent lots of time with my new friends in PS1 finding many hideouts at every corner of the campus. Even to this day, I am still finding more hiding spots.
Chapter Two, the best chapter. The transition to Olders, where I spent my last two years. I was a kid with only one year at PS1 before Olders. I got to learn about many interesting subjects with my new friends and friends from Middles. This was the year I got to go on my first PS1 camping trip. I remember being so scared the first night and every morning getting woken up very early to my classmates screaming at 5:30 AM. To finish 5th grade, we performed Shakespeare’s “A MidSummer Night’s Dream”. I left this year sad saying goodbye to some of my good friends, but ready for the next chapter.
Chapter Three, the final chapter of this story. This year starts off with reuniting with my fourth grade friends and meeting a few new friends. As grads in sixth grade, we all had more responsibilities. A great example was our Bake Sale to raise money for the grad gift of 2024. And, we had opportunities to be Grad Ambassadors by helping out with the tour for the new families. And for me I had the chance to be a part of the PS1 Community Service Group who organized the sock drive and made gifts for the unhoused and the animals at the animal shelter. We ended the year with performing another one of Shakespeare’s plays, “Julius Caesar”.
And now we are on the last page of this book. It has been a fun, chaotic, and lively journey. I will never forget these incredible years at PS1. Although it’s sad to leave, I will keep these memories with me forever. And now that we are at the end of the last page, it means it is time to pick up and start a new book.
Dear Azumi,
There are not enough words for us to express how proud we are of you. You have always been such a kind and thoughtful girl who puts others first. You are quietly brave and resilient. Even when you are scared or worried, you are always willing to try something new and to push yourself, all the while thinking about others in the process. We see how much you have accomplished and grown through your elementary school years and are amazed with who you are becoming. We learn so much from you every day. Your understanding of people, situations and the world has a maturity and depth beyond your age. This empathy and resilience will take you far. Our hope for you, is that you continue to dive into every experience with the courage, energy, and thoughtfulness you always bring. We will always be your biggest supporters. We are the luckiest family to have you as our daughter and sister.
Love, Mom, Dad & Sora
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Azumi, you are a thoughtful and self-aware human being who is also sought out by classmates and younger students as someone who can create a lot of fun. Settled and focused in class, you are ready to engage in anything that is asked of you. You work your way through all areas of academic content with the confidence that you will figure out anything that you do not yet understand. Any trepidation you might feel about novel experiences, whether academic, confronting a new hike, or your first set of stitches, is quickly quelled by your prior experiences of successfully meeting challenges, and you easily remind yourself that you know a path forward. You bring that same measure of self-regulation to your social interactions, enjoying being silly with friends and getting appropriately worked up about the injustices of school friendships, while always remembering that you know there is likely another perspective or side to the story. Your desire for the class to function well and for students to act respectfully to one another are examples of your maturity that are frequently on display as a welcomed model for your classmates.
2021-2022
Words from friends:
You’re such an athletic person. You’re a really awesome soccer player. I love how persistent you are in sports like in PE when you play rough but not too rough. You are really good at kickball and I like that you only care about having fun. You are a good sport. You are really nice and I am so glad you came to PS1. You always play with me during recess! It was fun when we created a simulator ride with the blocks. Remember when we took down the Hoot Birds? Thank you for being a great friend to me.
2022-2023
You are so caring and helpful to others. I love hanging out with you, it’s like your smile and laugh are contagious. When we were doing debates, I thought that you really displayed lots of persuasion and you are a very strong debater. I like how you always let others express their opinions and try to include them. Even if I am annoying, you are still kind to me and keep your cool - Thank you for being my friend. You are super artistic, you made an amazing dragon painting, and you have great ideas for posters and presentations. You’re also great at soccer! I love being on your team outside of school. You are so thoughtful when you bring us treats and other fun surprises. I think you are going to be a great grad next year because you are amazing, funny, kind, entertaining, and enthusiastic.
2023-2024
You are very focused on making your work your best. You are always open to new ideas, and I especially love that you are motivated by your mistakes. Your art is incredible, and your Personal Textbook entries are extraordinary. I love that you hang out with friends to talk about your ideas on future projects. You make the best jokes and are very funny. You are always in the coolest outfits from top to bottom! Your fashion is what inspired my style of outfits. I love how you laugh with your friends and never fail to help me in math. You are kind and you always look out for someone whether they’re sad, mad, or anything.
Brooke Laskar
Six Years at PS1
Hey past Brooke! I’m you from well….2024, and as your older and wiser self. I can guarantee that you are not ready for the journey that’s ahead of you.
First grade was one fast, crazy, unhinged blur. You were a bit scared about a new school, new friends, and a new huge campus to get lost on. You made new friends and never got lost and before you know it it was your first MUD and you were whisked away to summer.
Just as the weather started to cool a bit you knew it was time for school to start. And you were ready to rock this school year, now no longer a younger but a bridge student. There was power in that title. You stayed queen of the school all through winter, and spring? Not quite. As you said goodbye smiling and waving you were sure this whole big thing called COVID was just going to last a few weeks. People can be SO dramatic, am I right? You were wrong. The rest of second grade was spent with many brain breaks in between Zooms as you endlessly tried to memorize the Meeting ID and Passcodes.
The summer was a drag, you spent many hot sweaty days at your mom’s school, running to the sound of the ice cream truck. Then running along the Santa Monica/Brentwood medians after the sun cooled just enough. Third grade was no different than the summer, Just with less ice cream and more Zoom, I know. Until, get ready, buy new clothes, say goodbye to your mom’s school, because YOU’RE GOING BACK TO YOUR SCHOOL! It’s only four days a week so you’ll still get to spend some time at your mom’s school, but how exciting. The rest of the year flowed like the waves at the beach. That summer you went to the beach every week, you were kind of addicted to ice cream especially the one at the beach, but don’t worry you still are.
Fourth grade was a year of discovery for you, that’s when you fell in love with jellyfish, started ballet, and finished the first draft of your grad speech. I know it seems a bit early but you can never be prepared enough. And arguably the best part of fourth grade was finding your forever friends in the most unexpected places. Summer vacations that year were awesome! Rwanda and Amsterdam, yes! You even got to see your spirit animal, the giraffe!
And then there was fifth grade, the last year everything was normal. You started in Olders 5 the class you wanted to be in since Youngers, and longed to start middle school applications. You learned “The Elements Song,” which still remains your biggest flex. Summer of fifth grade was a party: Eras tour, beach, sleep away camp, ballet camp, middle school camp, Seattle, Cabo, camel riding, ATV-ing, The Barbie Movie, and A LOT of partying.
Which brings me here, today, six years in three minutes, kinda hard to do. But what I know is as I look at this yard as a PS1 student for the last time and remember the 52 thousand hours I spent here, I realize that I’m ready to start over and have another fast crazy year. To look back and go wow I’ve a long way. So, past Brooke, your life is wild but you’ll be fine after all you are still Brooke.
Words from Tawny and Adam Laskar:

Words from Susannah Wolf:
Brooke, you are a happy individual who loves your friends and the daily activities of life in school. Much of your experience mimics the ornately decorated name tags you make for your space and your work - carefully crafted, brightly engaging, and full of lively fun. You enjoy not just the doing of academic and social learning, but the process of reflecting on it as well. You learn even more through your thoughtful articulation of the development of your ideas, finding it helpful to share your thinking with others as you solidify your perspective. You engage easily in all subject areas, eagerly volunteer to read aloud in class, delightedly speak to groups of visitors about your PS1 experiences, and humorously present on stage. You are very independent and socially mature, and at the same time you love to be silly with your friends. You care deeply about the people in your class and often find yourself as the recorder of shared experiences, reporting back the details of past adventures.

Devon Jihye Shao
Seven Years at PS1
Orange, Green, Indigo, Violet, and Olders 5. These are the 5 classes that I’ve been in throughout my 7 years at PS1. One of the most unique parts of PS1 is that each class is named after a color of the rainbow. When I was younger just in Orange class, I didn’t know I was in kindergarten, I just knew I was in Orange class. So when people asked me what grade I was in, I would just answer, “Orange class.” Only a PS1 student would understand the colors of each class, something that no one else would. Each different color of the rainbow I was in, I learned something new, every year I fell in love with something that I never thought that I would have an interest in.
In my time in Orange class, I learned about bees: their habitat, job, and how they make honey. I knew my future was set, and someday I would be a beekeeper.
In Green class, I learned about marine biology. I was so in love with the ocean, spending hours talking about it with my family and friends. I didn’t know much, but I knew that I was meant to study and care for the ocean.
In Indigo class I learned about the rocks. I remember I went to the Grand Canyon with my family, and I was obsessed with figuring out what types of rocks were what. I loved geology and I knew it was in my future.
In Violet class, I was so interested in the history of LA and history in general too. I wanted to learn more about history and to continue my passion for it. Unlike my other passions that did not continue after each year, this one did.
In my time in Olders 5, I discovered my passion for acting. Being on stage in front of an audience and acting with emotion for a different character with different traits than me in the 2 Shakespeare plays I’ve performed, was one of the most remarkable experiences I’ve ever had. I never knew I liked acting, but finally trying it in Olders, helped me discover a new passion that I never had an interest in before.
Now, all of my learning experiences come to an end at PS1. Every single one of them shapes who I am now. I want to thank my parents for being on my side and supporting all my dreams I’ve had here at PS1. Without them, I could not have gone through it alone. Thank you to my sister for always being there for me, whether that is someone to talk to about my day or to practice my Shakespeare lines with. Thank you to all of my amazing friends, that I shared all of my moments with, from the first day of school to every recess I’ve had here. And finally, I would like to thank my teachers. Every single one of my experiences and memories could not have been possible without my teachers that were by my side since my first day here. From wanting to be a beekeeper to my geologist dream, all of my learning experiences made me who I am today and who I am going to be.
No matter what happens, PS1 has taught me to dream big and never stop.
Words from Hanna Shin and David Shao:
To our big girl, Devon,
We are so proud of the girl you are today. When we reflect back on the last 7 years at PS1, we could not imagine that our then, 5 year old girl, would grow to be this confident, smart, kind, curious and amazing person that you are.
We still remember what you wore, even down to how you styled your hair that first day entering the school with a sky full of bubbles. You were a little nervous but very excited and I remember the little smile you gave us as you lined up to enter Orange class. You were so small compared to the grads who were running around like they owned this school.
Fast forward 7 years, entering the same gate on the first day of school on your last year at PS1. A huge smile as you embraced your friends and gave us a wave goodbye disappearing into the sky full of bubbles. PS1 has been your (and our) home, where you made beautiful friendships, connections with teachers and staff and had so much fun just learning. We are so amazed by how you’ve grown to embrace who you are, the kindness and grace that you share with your peers, and the confidence to speak up for yourself. We are proud of you every day for just being Devon. It’s been an amazing ride with you during your time at PS1, and we know that you will be awesome in your next journey in middle school.
We love you so so much.
Love, Mommy & Baba.
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Devon, you are curious, knowledgeable, determined and thoughtfully interested in everything. You are a careful and detailed thinker who gives every experience your full consideration. You eagerly weigh into class discussions, volunteering when needed, adding appropriate and useful information and commentary. You are passionate about learning, with the common theme being the process even more than the content. You are hardworking and determined, happy to put in the energy and effort to integrate new information with your broad and rich schema. Best of all, throwing yourself fully into ideas brings you such pleasure and enriches the experience for all your classmates as you help make content and process accessible for others through your connections and interpretations. You exude a contentment that comes from a place of knowing yourself and the clarity that you are making the choices that match who you are.

You are really nice and smart. You were an amazing partner for the pi day activity and you were so easy to work with. You really listened to me and that was really helpful. Thank you for always giving ideas when we’re doing group/ table activities. You always come up with the best ideas. You are a very good friend–like the time we played hide and seek, you had incredible sportsmanship because if someone didn’t want to be the seeker you would be the seeker again. You are always motivated and focused. You are the perfect mix of kind, funny and serious. I appreciate how you can get your work done while having a good time doing it.

You have a really good personality. You are really funny and have good jokes. Your happy, kind, flexible and active. And you always tell the truth. You have a really nice laugh. You like helping people and will help in any problem. I like your smile, and when people are mean to others, you are good at sticking up for them. You never give up. Dear Devon, I miss talking to you. It’s fun having math class with you. I miss playing tag and doing dog piles with you.
Devon is SO flexible. If someone wants to be the first in the game she’ll always say “okay, I don’t mind.” Devon is the best to play with. She comes up with great ideas for games and always sticks to the rules. Devon is really kind. When we’re partners, she helps me carry all of the supplies to where we need to bring it. One time when we were playing Target 20 in math, we kept getting the same numbers. It made me laugh how we kept getting the same score over and over.
You have an amazing style and an amazing personality. You are such a good friend, and you are super smart too. You’re so kind and an amazing person. You’re so smart in math. You always bring joy to the room when you walk in! When I came to PS1 you were sitting next to me at my desk and you were so inclusive and I am so grateful to have you as a friend. You made my experience at PS1 so memorable. Have a great summer! You are an awesome best friend. You are so caring and kind and it makes me feel like I’ve known you forever! I love your sense of humor and you are always up for a challenge! You’re the sweetest person I know. You’re very smart as well. You’re always making me laugh.
Diego Tucker Ontal
Seven Years at PS1
To quote the poet Robert Frost, “In three words, I can sum up everything I have learned about life. It goes on.” I now fully understand what that means. Life will always keep going. Sometimes I want to stop time, and never move on. But that isn’t how to be happy. If we linger in the past, life will rush by, like water in a river. It sweeps us along with it. If we try to go against the current, we will be yanked away and pulled under. For time goes by faster than we imagine. It feels like just yesterday, I was in Yellow, craning my neck to see the olders’ faces, and trying to get out of their way when they walked past. They seemed like giants to me, even as I moved up to Blue, and then Indigo. When I first walked into this school, I never thought about graduation. In fact, I couldn’t even imagine making it past my first year. And yet here I am, seven years later, about to graduate. Sometimes I feel I didn’t get enough time. Sometimes I feel like I missed two years, because of Covid. But as I think about moving on, I must choose to not think about how I am going to miss this school, but about the memories I have here. Going camping for the first time, for example. I was scared about being away from my parents, even for just a day. But in the end, I loved it and didn’t want to leave. I think that reflects my whole time at PS1. At first, I was scared, but in the end, I was happy. However, I was not alone in this. I had help. I had my teachers, helping me through tight spots and tough times. I had amazing specialists. I had my friends always at my side. And I had my parents, making the long drive to school every day. All of you who have supported me along the way, thank you. So I end this journey standing under this oak tree remembering this about life, “It goes on.” Thank you.

You are so kind.
You are so smart.
You make great chili.
You are a problem-solver.
You are an engineer.
You are the one who consistently clears the ball on defense for your soccer team.
You make great Wacky cake.
You have a way with words.
You are a natural artist.
You have a fantastic sense of humor (and not just for corny Pinoy jokes, like your dad).
You have the best laugh.
You are wise.
You have great instincts in baseball.
You are a great singer, even if you mostly do it in the shower.
You have some slick moves you might want to try out on the dance floor.
You are so responsible and do all your chores without ever having to be asked (okay, mostly).
You make great quesadillas.
You love ice cream almost as much as your dad (he would be hard to beat).
You love the ocean almost as much as your mom (maybe you both love it equally).
You respect nature.
You are a natural fly fisherman.
You are always thoughtful of those others might not be kind to, and especially of younger kids.
You deserve the compliments you get, AND DON’T YOU FORGET IT!
But most of all, you are who you are, not who we (or anyone else) tells you you are.
Believe in yourself. Stay true to yourself.
We are proud of all the hard work you have done at PS1. We are excited to see where your next chapter leads. Most of all, we hope you will always share your dreams with us, so we can help you work toward them, whatever they may be.
We love you so much.
Happy Graduation!
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Diego, you are an easy going and warm human being who cares deeply for others. Kind, athletic, and playful, you are gently passionate about your learning, your play, and your friends. You bring an ease and confidence to your interactions with others that helps your classmates to settle. You are empathetic and insightful, tending to start out quiet, observe the situation, and build your comfort level over time. You are a good friend who will happily work with anyone and who can also be counted on to join in the fun, whether it is storytelling of the past or playing stone and stick baseball. You have a keen sense of justice, feel strongly about following the rules, know there is a right way to do things, and expect others to also step up. You have learned independence from opportunities you have had to do real work, which has significantly developed your confidence over time. You like to have a plan and then to learn what you need and work hard to make the plan come to fruition.

Have you ever been watching something that ends you on a very exciting and dramatic plot twist? You want to know what happens but you can’t find out until you watch the next episode. Well that’s how I feel right now, but the next episode isn’t available to me.
Seven years ago when I stepped onto this very campus, I was very nervous, wondering what a new school would be like, but as the year progressed I became more comfortable with my surroundings. During those times, I did not have a single care in the world because I had just started school and thought that I was going to be here forever.
Now as I enter a new episode of my life, new plot twists, new characters, and exciting details are about to come, but I am also nervous for the different bumps on the way. As much as I love PS1, I also have to leave it so I can move on with my life. As I look back on my time here, I see all the wonderful memories, like in Youngers, when we made s’mores on the one day camping trip. Or my first Halloween parade. These memories that were created on and off the school campus, are very hard to forget and I hope I can hold on to these memories for as long as possible. So as I spend my last couple of minutes on this campus, I would like to thank PS1 for all the amazing times, memories, and making me who I am.
Words from Soraya Kelly Wax and Jonathan Wax:
Dearest Elias, Congratulations on your sixth grade graduation, sweet boy! As we celebrate your milestone, we wanted you to know just how proud we are of the kind, thoughtful, and brave person you are. We love every moment we get to be your parents and watch you grow – from your first gummy smile, to the first steps you took while roaring with pride, to the first day you arrived at the Euclid gate for kindergarten. Seven years have flown by for us since you began at PS1, and we so admire the young man you’ve become.
It’s been such a joy for us to see you explore, discover, and thrive at school and elsewhere these past seven years. We’ve had front-row seats to your boundless enthusiasm for learning about the world and those we share it with, including upstanders, changemakers, the earliest Americans, Harlem Renaissance artists, shapers of ancient civilizations, evolved sea creatures, and Jung Hoo Lee (to name but a few). We’ve cherished watching you take the stage during your class circle times and Shakespeare performances – and of course it’s always a thrill for us to see the passion, intensity, and sheer joy you unleash on any baseball field you patrol!
For as impressed as we are with what you’ve absorbed and accomplished to this point, we’re even more gratified that you approach everything you do with positivity, determination, and an understanding that temporary setbacks are a necessary part of any lasting progress. Keep it up! These are the traits and habits of mind that will serve you well as you embark for middle school, and your lifetime beyond.
Above all else, we’re proudest that you’re such a supportive classmate, teammate, friend, brother, son, and all the roles you fulfill for everyone you share your life with. Your steady presence inspires those around you, and even in those occasional moments we all face when you’re feeling a little less than steady, we all marvel at your ability to be vulnerable as needed, ask for help, and pick up where you left off.
Elias, your parents simply adore you and we are so lucky that we get to enjoy the ride of life with you! Huge congratulations again on graduating from PS1; we love you so much!
Mama & Papa
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Elias, you are a serious person with a gentle soul. You dig into academic work with intention, are silly with your friends at lunch time, are kind and playful at recess, and imbue your role as admissions ambassador with deep gravitas. You have a strong sense of the range of expectations and are easily able to modulate your behavior to different settings. You often show up as quiet and reserved, which is true, and yet when you have something to say or a question to ask you have no trouble communicating your ideas with strength, detail, and conviction. You have taken on a particular role this year as a friend to children in our Kindergarten, working hard to make sure there are structures in place to include them in play and also removing yourself from the larger game you have chosen at times when a small child might need a quieter experience. You bring that same sensitivity to the classroom, attending more closely than most to opportunities to make space for a classmate or to make a game more inclusive.
2017-2018
Words from friends:
You did a great job of singing your solo at our class circle time. You are great at finding the colors I need when we are doing fuse beads. It was really nice of you to help me finish my fuse beads. I like being on the same team as you because you are nice. You include me in your games.
2020-2021
2022-2023
You are inclusive, helpful, and friendly. Every time we play a game like Quidditch, you always have good sportsmanship. When friends are disagreeing, you know how to look at things from both sides. I enjoy my laughs with you, even when I make a bad joke. You are active, athletic, and really good at sports. You have a kind heart and a good heart. You are a math whiz in our class.
2018-2019
You are great at soccer. I play with you during recess and you always pass the ball. You are smart. There are a lot of math questions that I don’t know that you help me with. You are a really great singer. When we practice our songs in music I can always hear your voice. You make detailed and interesting block structures. You are helpful because you help people finish their fuse beads.

I like how you are on my team when we build awesome sand castles in the sand box. You are really good at baseball and soccer. It’s fun riding to practice with you. I miss hanging out with you, it was fun to see you at Mammoth. I miss when you chase me and my friends around. You are really creative.
You are very athletic and are really good at all games. I am always happy to be on your PE team. You are so, so, so fast! Plus, you are a good sport. I like that you never take sides and just help us work through it. Thank you for being the best friend and for always standing up for me.
You are so cool. When I got you for Random Acts of Kindness, it was so easy to compliment you and help you because everything you do is effortlessly elegant. I love playing on the same soccer team as you during recess and I loved being on the same debate team as you too. I’ve had so much fun being in your class and bonding with you over small things. You are so confident, welcoming, kind, and you make sure that everyone feels supported. I’ve noticed how you are always so welcoming to younger kids too. You’re really energetic and great at sports. You are very smart with math and always have a good attitude. You’re like a brother to me and I know that you always have got my back.

You’re a great baseball player, and so fun to be around. You are a great pitcher. When I face you, I think wow! You brighten my day, with a smile always on your face. Elias you are inclusive in all the sports you play. You are smart and support others in difficult things. I admire your determination in sports. You are a very funny person you tell a whole lot of jokes and sing some funny songs. You increase the morale of our class.
Grayson Chu
Seven Years at PS1
Hi, my name is Grayson and my first memory of PS1 is when I first walked into the yellow class and I got surprised by a kid named Rayan. That kid Rayan would later be my best friend of many other friends. I think it’s good to have friends in your first school and especially kind, thoughtful, respectful, and supportive friends like mine.
Another memory that I have is when I didn’t want to go to school because I was afraid of a field trip but my friends helped me conquer my fear. Later on the field trip I had a lot of fun. Later in my ps1 experience I went on a lot of field trips and had a lot of fun.
Sorry to ruin the mood now but during the Covid lockdown it was really challenging for me and some of my classmates. During the long years of lockdown I got behind on math and it was challenging for me. When Covid ended we still had to wear masks and.when it got to math it was really challenging for me because I didn’t learn properly on zoom.
Even though learning during Covid was hard, I am glad that when we came back to in person learning I got to learn a lot in a short amount of time. And getting to play soccer with my friends, playing games with my friends, learning with my friends. Through the sad times and good times we persevered. I am so grateful for the lasting friendships I have made over the years.
Words from Jonathan and Lynda Chu: Words from Grayson Chu:
Dear Grayson,
Today is a special day as we celebrate your graduation, and we couldn’t be prouder of the incredible young man you are becoming. This milestone is a testament to your hard work, dedication, and the wonderful qualities that make you who you are.
You have always been a sensitive and caring soul, with a heart that understands and feels deeply. Your empathy and kindness are evident in the way you treat others, always ready to offer support and friendship. This sensitivity is a beautiful strength, making you a cherished friend and a source of comfort to those around you.
Your intelligence shines brightly in all you do. You are a natural listener, a step-by-step thinker with a quest for learning that drives you to excel in school. Your teachers consistently speak highly of you, praising your diligence, enthusiasm, and the thoughtful contributions you make in class. Your academic achievements are a source of great pride for us, reflecting your commitment and passion for knowledge.
Strength, both physical and mental, is another defining quality of yours. Whether you’re mastering the art of soccer, advancing through the ranks in Tae Kwon Do, or experiencing the exhilarating freedom of skiing, you approach each activity with determination and joy. Soccer has become a true passion, and your skill on the field is a testament to your hard work and team spirit. Tae Kwon Do has taught you discipline and resilience, qualities that will serve you well throughout life. Skiing, with its sense of freedom and adventure, reflects your bold spirit and love for the outdoors.
Your musical journey with the piano is yet another area where you shine. Learning to play an instrument requires patience, practice, and a love for the art of music—all of which you have in abundance. Each note you play is a reflection of your dedication and your ability to express yourself in new and creative ways.
As your parents, we are filled with immense pride when we think of all you have achieved. Your accomplishments in school, sports, and music are impressive, but it is your character that truly stands out. You are a compassionate, intelligent, and strong individual, and we are confident that these qualities will guide you to even greater heights in the future.
Your graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter in your life, one that holds endless possibilities. As you move forward, always remember to stay true to yourself, continue pursuing your passions, and embrace each new challenge with the same determination and enthusiasm that have brought you this far.
Congratulations Grayson on your graduation! We love you more than words can express and are incredibly proud of the person you are becoming. We will always be here to support and cheer you on in every step of your journey.
With all our love, Mom and Dad
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Grayson, you are a kind and gentle soul. You are a hard worker with high expectations for yourself and the determination to reach your goals. Brave in so many ways, including the willingness to try any food, it is exciting to watch you come to see the same strengths and skills that are so obvious to the rest of us. You advocate for yourself and make sure that you have what you need to feel confident moving forward. You are quiet in the group and very present, always listening, often attending to many layers of what is taking place around you. People are drawn to you and interested to hear what you have to say, in part because you never waste your words. There is an undercurrent of humor that you easily share with kids and that you occasionally let adults peek at. You show up bravely every day, ready to push yourself to do your best.

You are always laughing with friends playing soccer yet still being inclusive to others! I hope that you are treated just the same at your new school like how you treated me. Every time I hang out with you at your house, It’s loads of fun. You are very kind to everyone you meet, even if you don’t know that person very well. I also like that you are open to other ideas, even if they aren’t your own. You always know how to make people laugh even when you’re not trying to, and you help everyone who needs help. You are a great friend to have.
Henry Theodore Kendall
Seven Years at PS1
In Indigo, I remember doing an algebraic problem that had three equations and three unknowns. This is my first memory of liking math at PS1. However, I probably liked math in Youngers — who doesn’t like shapes and counting? I like math a lot and am always wanting more.
This year every first and second Thursday of the month, I walk into the studio for math morning. The hardest problems are always in the back. That is where I always go. One Thursday, there was a Nim problem. Nim is a game in which a group of players take turns removing pieces from a pile. They have to remove at least one, but can go up to a limit unique to the game. The formula is that for a number x, every other group of x +1 allows you to win. A few weeks later, I was in a math competition and there was a Nim problem! I was the only sixth grader in the country to get it right. Who knows how else PS1 might unexpectedly prepare me for life?
In math, my teachers always know the right questions to ask me to explain my work well. Explaining work in anything helps you go down deeper. Math is such an important skill because as Dean Schilter, an American physicist and mathematician once said, “Go down deep enough into anything and you will find math.” To deepen one’s understanding the best thing you can do is to share your thinking to a group well enough that they understand it too. Last year in Olders Four, I remember a math question with watermelons. I had different ideas than others about using spatial reasoning to find the total number. In this conversation, everyone demonstrated a lot of patience and respect as we listened to each other’s ideas, and this allowed us to go far into the subject. Here was a problem about watermelons that allowed us to see different perspectives and think deeply about the numbers.
I sometimes go against what mathematician Stan Gudder once said, “The essence of math is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple.” By making simple things complicated in math, however, you can develop a deeper understanding of concepts and know not only that formulas work, but why they work. PS1 has taught me to be a respectful, prepared problem solver by challenging me in new ways.

Henry, you are an eager learner and a kind friend. You love to challenge your elastic brain, never say no to a challenge, and are ready for adventure, both academic and physical. You will try any problem that is introduced, see connections easily, and are always willing to try a different approach. You are a valued team player and love to bring your strategic mind to the challenge, game, or puzzle at hand. You delight when you can share your thoughts with another curious mind and love to dig into the intricacies and details of a story. Your passion for service to the larger community shows up both in and outside of school, and guides your evolving world view. You are a respectful friend who recognizes that being yourself is much more important than following the crowd, leading you to build relationships in which each person is valued for who they are.

You are really funny, you always say funny things that make us laugh. You play kindly. You like to play Legos and you include people that want to build with you. You are very interested in playing with different people, and you don’t play with the same person every day. You like to play in the sandbox, and you are really good at digging and building castles.

Seven Years at PS1
I remember when I first walked into PS1 seven years ago. Everything was new, but I was still welcomed into PS1, and I soon adjusted to the new environment. It is amazing to think of how far I’ve come since that one day when I first walked through the brown gate. Over the course of seven years, PS1 has not only allowed me, but has encouraged me, to pursue my interests and have fun while learning.
I remember my journey through PS1, through Youngers, Bridge, Middles, and now Olders. It all seems to have gone by in an instant, and it’s hard to believe that it happened over the course of seven years. Although it has all come to an end, I am extremely grateful to PS1 for allowing me to explore my many interests and to be myself.
PS1 has allowed me to make new friends, pursue my interests, and become a more determined and helpful person. PS1 has helped me to be more expressive, collaborative, and to be a problem solver. It has taught me to embrace change, be honest, and, in essence, become a better person.
Throughout the seven years I have been at PS1, many changes have come over this school. First it was the change of my sisters graduating, then the change of the Head of School, and then the new playground. One change they didn’t make, however, is more high surfaces for me to jump off of. But now it is time for the biggest change of all. Now it is time for me to leave PS1.
My time at PS1 has been educational, memorable, and, most importantly, transformational. I have been at PS1 for seven years, and my time at this school has now come to an end. Although I am sad to leave PS1, I am extremely grateful for the amazing time that I have spent here, and I will always remember PS1 for being there for me and helping me grow.
Words from Adam and Tracy Bromwich:
Dear Isaac,
As we say good-bye to PS1, Dad and I find ourselves reflecting on and marveling at your growth and accomplishments. When I think about PS1, I see you at every stage of your life so far. I remember very clearly the first time I visited the school as a prospective parent considering kindergarten for Sophia. You were a sweet, sleeping 11-week old baby I kept all wrapped up close to me for the entire tour. It’s a good thing you stayed asleep because I was busy falling in love with the school and imagining you, Nora, and Sophia as students. I remember you as the active toddler I brought to pick up Sophia - either wrapped on my back when I was lucky with your nap schedule or asleep in your car seat when I wasn’t. I love that there are teachers and fellow parents who remember you from those days, too. Pick-up was your favorite time of the day. ‘YaYa, Dia!’ you would exclaim, knowing you’d get to see your sisters. I remember you as the preschooler I’d be busy trying to occupy during Circle Time. I liked the gatherings on the 12th street yard best because you could run around the basketball court and I didn’t have to miss out on the performance. The day you stepped foot on campus as a student and joined your sisters at school, we felt so lucky to finally have you all in one place. Those were the best two years and we loved the school-wide gatherings where we got to enjoy having a child in three different clusters!
Throughout your time at PS1 we have so enjoyed witnessing your steady growth. We were well-seasoned parents by the time you arrived, with previous experience with the majority of your teachers. The dutiful younger brother, you followed your sisters through Youngers, Bridge, Middles, and Olders. But somewhere over the past year, we’ve watched as your pace has quickened and - as if you were riding the electric bike you recently converted - you have whizzed right past us in so many ways! It is incredible for us to see the focus, passion and dedication you have for your engineering pursuits and creative projects. Then, we watch in awe as you patiently share your learning and your enthusiasm with all. Your loving, caring nature shines through. And you’re so brave! When you cut your finger the other day and we had to visit urgent care, I couldn’t help but compare your reaction to what I, Dad, or your sisters might display if we were the patient on the table. You seriously kept your cool and even left the doctor impressed. You’re getting ready now to forge your own path in school. There will be new things to learn, and new opportunities to care for others, and new times to be brave. But we’re confident that you’re going to find your way!
Love, Mom and Dad
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Isaac, you are brave, both physically and intellectually. Often my interactions with you include something thrilling, from observing you perform a daring physical trick on the playground to hearing a story of the chemical reaction you were investigating in your garage over the weekend. You love to follow your curiosity and push gently at the boundaries, always with good intent and always to grow your skills or understanding. Your interest doesn’t stop at the doing, you are also eager to reflect on the experience, discuss the outcomes, and postulate about the differences small changes to an experiment will have on the outcome. Kind and inclusive with little kids, you talk and play as equals with both children and adults. You also love to be asked questions and are always happy to share everything you know on a particular topic. You are eager to help friends with their own projects and to invite them to join you to experiment and explore.
It always seems impossible until it’s done. -Nelson Mandela

You have a creative mind and always have an idea. You are a good friend and engineer. You will always be a 3-d master. You are a really good scientist and smart. You are also trying new things and finding new ways to improve your knowledge. The stunts that you do! Like when you jumped from the spider web and from the slide on the Euclid yard! I can count on you to know the answer to a problem ASAP, and if you ever get stuck on a problem you always find a way to figure it out. I’m so glad to have a friend like you. Lasers all the way, buddy!!!

Seven Years at PS1
Have you ever played a sport, a video game, or any game? If you have, you must know that feeling when the game is over, and you start thinking about your highlights, and maybe even things you could have improved on. Well that’s where I’m at right now.
I’ve been at PS1 for seven years, which is most of my life. Within these seven years, I’ve learned countless new things, grown many interests in things that I barely even knew about. And most of all, I’ve met my life-long friends.
When I first walked into PS1 with my little Batman-themed backpack, I was nervous, but eager to meet new people, and make new friendships. As I met my teachers and classmates, I quickly made new friends. One of my favorite parts of Younger’s was the writer’s workshop. What you did was you would come up with an idea on what to write about, I usually did a superhero. You had guidelines to write, and a box above for an illustration, which was my favorite part, and really let me use my creativity.
Once the pandemic had ended, I started to pick up many interests. One of them was Rubik’s Cubes. I had watched a documentary, and was now invested. It was frustrating at first, but after spending hours, I finally got it in three minutes. With more hard work, I eventually shortened my time, and even got a record of 39 seconds. PS1 has taught me to never give up, and reach whatever I set my mind to.
As I walked into fifth grade, I was excited to get a glimpse of what Olders was like. As the year progressed, there was one subject in particular that interested me, chemistry. We were studying the Periodic Table, and all of its elements. I found it fascinating how tiny atoms had so much more to them. One element I studied was called Radium. It was used for medical reasons such as x-rays, but also served as power for watches. However this was quickly changed due to radiation poisoning.
During 5th grade, I was also interested in entrepreneurship. And after taking an investing class I decided to start my own business selling sports drinks. Kids would come up to me every day asking for different flavors, and I was happy with every order. Unfortunately the trend died down, however at that time I had already sold out, and learned even more about business.
PS1 has also helped me with my confidence. Before 5th grade, I was very hard on myself. I would put my mind to one goal and stick with it, however even the tiniest mistake would bring me to a halt. But after being placed in leading roles, my confidence grew, and I was able to overcome challenges that would have otherwise stopped me. During the fifth grade camping trip, our class was assigned to make a play to perform later in the day. I decided to direct the play, and after seeing our finished product, I was really proud. And if I may say so myself, it was the best play. Finally sixth grade. After all I have learned, after all of the challenges I have overcome, I was finally a graduate. For me, the number one thing PS1 has taught me is to never give up. Chase your dreams, and be whatever you want to be.
I would like to thank my parents for supporting me through my whole life, and helping me be the person I am today. I would also like to thank all of my teachers throughout the years for their guidance, teaching, and helping me overcome my challenges. I would like to thank my friends for being annoying, but also helping me in class, and making me feel better when I’m down, and overall being amazing friends, most of the time. Last and probably least, I would like to thank my brother just because since I was in his speech, he wanted to be in mine, so thank you Mays.
Jules has been full of surprises since the day he was born.
The OB/GYN literally gasped when Jules emerged still tethered to his mom. The ultrasound had vastly underestimated his size. Yet there he was – kind of a bruiser.
And with a huge shock of jet-black hair. Almost a pompadour. We could have named him “Elvis.” But we resisted.
Some words to describe Jules: quick-witted and on his feet; card shark; backgammon hustler; versatile – can play any position in soccer and baseball; angler; budding entrepreneur; tummler (if you know you know); crafty but honest. (OK – watch him carefully playing Hokm.)
Jules loves nothing more than to get into bed early. Kidding. There aren’t enough hours in the day for him, and he’ll push to maintain consciousness for as long as possible to think his thoughts; plan his plans; and maximize his time with friends.
Speaking of friends, Jules relishes his pals. He is loyal. And loves to hang. There is plenty of time for solitude. Jules is a participant; a joiner; a leader and also a follower. Hence his passion for team sports: uniforms not for the sake of conformity but for community.
Jules is a little brother to Mays – but by only 14 months. Their brotherly love brightens our lives, despite their best efforts to try to hide it. Even (or especially) when they’re telling one another off. Sparring partners that help one another grow, deal, learn and laugh.
And with PS1 now in the rearview, we risk putting these words in his mouth, as we know them to be true:
As I travel down life’s pathway
Know not what the years may hold
As I ponder, hopes grown fonder
Precious memories flood my soul
Bob Dylan / “Precious Memories”
I have so much fun with you every day. I love the way you see the world, the way you think. I love your nature, which is so beautiful and kind, and I breathe and live for you and your brother.
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Jules, you are engaged, eager, and happy. You are evenkeeled and solid as a member of the group, making you a sought out friend and work partner. You enjoy a good time and find one in just about every setting, always keeping an eye on making sure your choices are appropriate. You were a wonderful ambassador to our admissions program, happy to share your story in a deeply reflective way with adults who were total strangers. You did a fantastic job as one of the leaders of our student town hall and were able to see the big picture and to think on your feet. You are comfortable with children and adults, who you see as your advocates. You are willing to speak up appropriately and to make a well-reasoned case for what you think is right. Your easy going personality and comfort engaging with anyone make you a welcome and positive influence in your class and the school as a whole. You are an active participant who serves to bring others together and to make activities more fun.

Words from friends:
You are such a good friend because you help people when they get hurt. You are a really good reader and a really good partner in reading. I like that you play with me because you are helpful. I love that you were my partner. You are good at football and kickball and you are really fast. You are good at soccer, dodgeball, and quidditch. I like your drawings. You are a nice friend.
2020-2021
I like how you are committed to something if you want to do it and you try very hard to stay that way even if it is hard. You are very athletic and amazing at sports. You are a great leader. You are a really amazing friend and you are always helping me when I need help. But the thing I like most about you is you play with everyone, boy or girl you play with all of them. In book clubs, you had a lot of background knowledge on Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and were great at making connections! You are a good listener when people are talking.
2018-2019
I really like that you can do really high kicks in soccer. I like you because I like to be on your team in soccer. You are really fast. You’re such a good friend and I like playing spy, soccer, and football with you. You are so good at sports. I’m really glad that I am in this class with you because you never exclude people.
2019-2020
You’re really good at all sports, not just a particular sport. You’re a really kind friend. I miss playing with you and making jokes together. I miss being your table spot buddy. I like when you give me advice. I miss having you make me laugh. You are very nice and friendly and a hard worker too. I miss interacting with you!
2021-2022
You always make me laugh. At the beginning of the year, I didn’t know you well. I heard you making jokes and thought they were so funny. I became better and better friends with you. Jules, you are an amazing athlete. When we play baseball, you always hit a home run! You have a “focus switch.” At recess, you are relaxed and having so much fun. Once you enter the classroom you turn on that “focus switch” and settle in right away. You are a really amazing role model.
2022-2023
I think you are a very enthusiastic person and really smart. I’ve noticed that you are always focused in class, and you are a leader. You are a leader in class, and on the yard for PE, and recess. You are a great QB in football and you are great at soccer. You are kind, supportive, and respectful to everyone in the class. I love how flexible and adaptable you are. I find you so funny and I always have a blast when we get assigned group projects together. Your note to me on my birthday card was so thoughtful and I know you put so much time and effort into it! You have the best conversation starters and you are just really fun to talk to and have lunch with. You are always accepting and you are the best friend to everyone. It is really fun being around you.
2023-2024
You are a really kind person and I appreciate being your friend. Whenever I’m on the same team as you when we’re playing soccer, it’s fun and we almost always win. You make sure teams are fair, and I like that even when we’re not on the same team, if you ever lose you always say “good game”. You help me in math, and that has been a big help! You are a helpful person in group projects; you’re very productive in projects that are due soon, and you figure out problems and solutions. You’re a great athlete, and you’re fantastically funny. Thank you for always being there.

Seven Years at PS1
I remember before I came to this school, I would visit the school, and play on the playground when we would come to pick up my brother. I remember when I walked in for the first time, I was nervous because it was my first day as a student here. I saw bubbles surrounding and welcoming everyone. I loosened up because I knew I’d love it here. The bell rang, and that’s when my time at PS1 finally started. When I was in kindergarten, I didn’t know much about the campus and I was still a slow learner. I remember playing on the playground, and making my own obstacle course! I remember going on a camping trip where we would visit the Olders who were staying overnight. In 1st grade, I remember doing simple subjects, and playing games! In 2nd grade, I learned how to read, and do the monkey bars, and I made many friends! When I was in third grade, I was a pro at reading. I still had some struggles with other subjects, but at that time I knew the campus a little more. In Bridge, that’s when Covid hit. When we all had to go on Zoom, where all of our faces were on the screens. It was confusing but I got used to it. Suddenly, I was In Middles, when we didn’t really have to worry about Covid but still wore masks. Though that did not affect my time in Middles. I remember, we would have dance parties and I was introduced to difficult math and some other challenging subjects. In Olders, I knew the campus by heart. My second year in Olders, I was doing advanced math. I made so many memories this year with my friends and met some new people.
It’s unbelievable to think about, because I have waited seven years to make this speech. A speech that I’ve been thinking about since day one. I guess I waited this long only to share how much I’ve gained from my journey here. Now that I’m leaving, I miss the younger me. The one that played her heart out in the playground with no worries. Sadly, I don’t have a Time Machine to go back to those amazing memories. All the memories I have here, created who I am today. At the end of the day, I have learned that things might seem impossible until it’s done and you realize you have what it takes to get it done. I want to say Thank you to the teachers who helped me figure out confusing subjects throughout the years. To my friends who’ve been by my side since day one, made me laugh, to the point where I cried, and to cringe without judging, and to my abuela who dropped me off at school, and Thank you to my parents who have always been my biggest.
Words from Marilyn and Christian Cazun:
My Dear Kiley,
You are a bright young lady, and I am so honored to be your mother. I am so proud of this accomplishment- completing 6th grade. I know this is one of many more accomplishments to come. I have seen your growth in your studies, and I hope that you continue to love the art of learning. I still remember you playing in the youngers play area, way before you would attend PS1 school. You were so eager to start coming to PS1 and now you are graduating. This is a reminder of how much you can achieve with your dedication, creativity, and kindness. Always believe in yourself. Always be true to yourself. Remember that you are loved, and we are here to support you every step of the way.
Congratulations again! I will always be rooting for you in all your endeavors.
Love, Mom
Dear Kiley,
I am beyond proud of the young person you are becoming! Your graduation from 6th grade is a significant milestone, and I am honored to be a part of it. I remember the first day of kindergarten like it was yesterday, and now here we are, celebrating the end of elementary school. Your hard work, determination, and kind heart have gotten you to this point, and I have no doubt you will continue to excel in all aspects of life.
As you move on to new challenges and adventures in middle school, remember that I am always here for you. Never be afraid to ask for help, try new things, and be true to yourself. I love you more than words can express, and I can’t wait to see the amazing things you will accomplish in the years to come. Congratulations again on your graduation - you deserve to celebrate and be proud of yourself!
Love, Dad.
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Kiley, you are extremely kind and good natured. You are inclusive and welcoming, and a pleasure to spend time with, for both children and adults because you convey positivity and acceptance and because you work hard to bring everyone into your joyful experience. Children are drawn to you and trust you as a friend and a work partner because you pay attention not just to your own needs but to those of your friends and the group. Curious and eager to learn more, you advocate for your needs and questions with children and teachers. You were a great facilitator of our student town hall, sensitive to the needs of your co-facilitators and eager to help the younger children find a way to join the problem-solving conversation. In your understated way, you completely stepped up and were able to be flexible and to convey empathy to 200 people in the moment. You function at PS1 as our social glue.

Seven Years at PS1
My time at PS1 has been a great experience. I have made a lot of friends and great memories here. Every class has been different, like in youngers I learned more basic things like addition and subtraction. In Bridge, I learned more about sea animals and we went on a field trip to the aquarium at the pier. In Middles, we played Zip Zap Zop. It was a game that encouraged us to interact with friends. Most recently in Olders, we studied all about ancient civilizations. The civilization I focused on was Ancient China. Last year we had a sub-teacher for half the year. He was really nice and our class did a lot of experiments like dry ice and elephant toothpaste. I really liked doing those experiments more than others because we were the only class that did them. I am going to miss being here but I am planning to visit. My friends are going to different schools than me so I won’t see them every day anymore. The seven years I have spent here have felt really long but they also felt like they passed by so fast. I am sad that I am leaving but I have to. I have learned a lot of things at PS1 and made friends that I will have forever. Thank you to all my teachers and everyone who has helped me and thank you to my parents who have always been there for me and supported me.

Words from Susannah Wolf:
Max, you are often the first child to arrive at school every day, ready for another day of friends, learning, adults you connect with, and soccer. You are ever eager to be in a community you see as a second family, and often advocate to stay long into the afternoons. Devoted to your friends, and good natured, you are a welcome member of any social group. You are opinionated without being bossy, full of good ideas, and eager to try just about anything. At the same time, you have high standards for kids’ behavior, don’t like cursing or put-downs, and work hard to make everyone feel included. You are also sensitive, impacted by unkindnesses among your friends, even when you are not the recipient. You are articulate and reflective, often able to help others think differently about the choices they are making and the impact they have on those around them. You bring your same calm reflectiveness to your learning and are comfortable sitting with not knowing something, asking for help when you need it, and advocating for yourself.

Nabil Rasromani
Seven Years at PS1
PS1 is a soccer game from the beginning when the referee blows the whistle at kick-off, signaling that my journey has begun, all the way until today, winning the game and being congratulated under this oak tree. The community at PS1 is full of all my teammates who are learning how to collaborate with each other. Learning how to be a good teammate. I have to thank all of my teachers for spending their time coaching me to be a better player.
Life and soccer all require making mistakes, but what PS1 has taught me is that it’s not about the problem; it’s about the solution. So even if the other team scores or if a call doesn’t go your way, keep playing your hardest. To me, soccer reflects aspects of PS1. For example, a restart is similar to the start of a new semester. A free kick is like an obstacle that you have to overcome. My friends are like my teammates, supporting me even if I don’t give a good pass or make an error. That is what good teammates do.
PS1 campus is like a soccer field because it is where all the fun and action takes place. Whether we are practicing, trying to improve our skills, or playing a game, it all takes place on the field, just as working on an assignment or going to a specialist takes place on school grounds. Most importantly, PS1 has taught me that learning is fun, just like playing soccer. It has taught me that something may be hard at first, like doing a fancy skill move, but it’s always possible as long as you put your mind to it and commit to not stopping until you succeed.
Now that we have won this game, the next question is, “What will happen next?” “Who will we play next?” This question will never be answered; it’s just how life works. That is why, if you’re always thinking about the future, you will never actually experience the present.
I have to thank my teachers because they made me who I am today. Thanks to my friends for always being there for me. Thanks to all the people who helped me through this magical journey. But most importantly, thank you, parents. Thank you for driving me to school every day. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to learn and make friends through this amazing journey. I will miss PS1 and all the memories I’ve made here, so thank you all.
Nabil,
We cannot believe you are graduating PS1! Where did the time go? We are so proud of how much you have grown throughout your 7-year experience. As the eldest child, we are fortunate to learn every day from being your parents. And let’s be honest you have had to deal with a lot of experimentation and parenting fails. Just think how much better off your brother is as a result! The biggest thing we have learned from you and about you is to not doubt your ability to accomplish your goals once you set your mind to something. Your persistence, determination, and willingness to sit with the discomfort of challenges and problem-solve even when it would be easier to give up, will serve you well in life. There are no limits to what you can accomplish with your insatiable curiosity, inquisitiveness, boundless sense of adventure, and hard work ethic. Even more important, we are so proud of the kind, caring, and respectful son, brother, friend, teammate, and human being you are. You have empathy for others and are always willing to lend a helpful hand or give away something of your own if it will make someone else happy. Your little brother takes advantage of this quality far too often. You do not take people for granted. You recognize and feel a deep sense of appreciation for family, teachers, and coaches who invest time and energy into you. You started your PS1 journey so shy and with few friends from preschool but have learned to have voice and agency over the years, as well as make connections with so many friends. We are excited to witness how confident you are in who you are, and how expressive you can be with others, even strangers. As you leave the PS1 bubble, we know that you take with you your strong sense of self and all the tools to be successful at middle school and beyond. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter of your education brings your way and how you take advantage of all the opportunities you will encounter. As always, you have our unwavering support and love.
Congratulations, Nabil!
Love you, Mama and Baba

from Susannah
Words
Nabil, you are a thoughtful and deep thinker who gets excited about learning and has the energy and focus to follow your interests. You often initially present as quiet, serious, and contemplative. When you are ready to join in with an idea, you are reflective and descriptive, and have lots to share. Clever and creative, your interests are wide ranging and your own. You love math both in and outside of school, finding it incredibly rewarding to chase down the relationships that bring an answer to the fore. You creatively think outside the box to turn things into something else and to create your own fun, as you did with the baseball game you created out of rocks and sticks at every pause on our class hiking trip last fall. With strong skills and personal motivation, you push yourself to excel and are grateful when teachers also expect the best of you and hold you to high standards. The same is true in your friendships, where children appreciate you, take you seriously, and count on you to return the favor.

You’re so determined. Nothing will stop you from finishing your book. You are such a self-advocate. You tell people what you need in a positive way. You even ask for help from other students. Nahla Sun Smiley
Seven Years at PS1
My first time walking through the brown gates of PS1 was magical. There were bubbles, kids laughing and playing, and a big, bright playground.
Hi everyone my name is Nahla. I’ve been at PS1 for 7 years and I’m 12 years old. Yeah, I know, such a long time, and oh my god, I am so old, My time at PS1 has been tremendous. Every year had a different focus, so there was always something new to learn. I’m proud to say I made it through despite several challenges, including COVID..
I would like to share a quote by Laurel D. Rund. “In my life, I’ve lived, I’ve loved, I’ve lost, I’ve missed, I’ve hurt, I’ve trusted, I’ve made mistakes, but most of all ... I’ve learned.” How this applies to me is I love my teachers, friends, and family. I’ve missed a few shots in basketball, I’ve lost a few pencils and pens, and most of all I’ve learned that friends will come and go, and that’s okay. I really enjoyed class projects with my favorite being the Harlem Renaissance because I learned about the amazing and complicated Billie Holiday. My favorite classes at PS1 were art and library. Art class taught me that I love to sketch , paint, and draw with pastels and charcoal. Library inspired me to write more stories and read more books, well over 100.. I’ve learned so much at PS1 and I am looking forward to a bright future.
Words from Deneise Williams and Reuben Smiley:
Dear Nahla Sun,
You are a light in this world. You radiate happiness, laughter, and kindness. From a young age, curiosity and empathy sparked how you moved through life. Asking countless questions with many follow up questions may have appeared to tire us at times, but in reality, we admired your thirst to know more, often. Always wanting to consider the other person’s feelings in any situation showed us your immense thoughtfulness. Additionally, your creativity has always been joyful to observe. Though our home is crammed with many of your drawings, paintings, and countless art supplies, we are happy to know that you are constantly inspired to create MORE because you have endless ideas. Your time at PS1 has helped you grow into this wonderful human being, adding to the things that make you, YOU. It has been a pleasure seeing your development and progress every year. Seeing your writings, drawings and level of comfort speaking to an audience evolve has been amazing to witness. In difficult times, you have always kept your chin up and tried your best. Please don’t ever think your hard work has gone unnoticed. Your resilience and determination is remarkable. We are so proud of our little girl who will be a force to reckon with as she gathers more tools to go out into the world.
Remember, you are a sun. And…

Nash Pembrook Tyler
Seven Years at PS1
On my first day I walked into the orange class, unsure of what was to come, until I saw the community taking me in with open arms. I don’t remember much from Youngers but I do remember how Holly helped me pull my tooth out when I wouldn’t stop touching it. I was so excited to get the tooth necklace because I thought it was so cool.
Making my way up to Bridge was a long journey, because there were a lot of stairs. I was excited to see what more could come. But then a global pandemic strikes, and we had to do school at home. When I moved into Middles, I learned a lot, but then I got slowed down due to a car crash. Lots of broken bones, a brain injury, and a year away from school with physical and mental therapy.
Out of nothing but hard work and dedication, I made it back to school better than before. My classmates helped make it more fun, always helping me up the stairs and giving me the best possible outcome.
Olders was a huge milestone in my life because I made so many friends and made lots of memories. I created a man named Johames Wilson that lived in Boston, I made a revolutionary shoe called the Senmenwell Clip, and I made a business video with my good friend. In 6th grade I got to be a graduate announcer which is so much cooler when I found out my sister couldn’t because of Covid, and got to learn about the ancient Mayan civilization.
I want to thank all my teachers, and all my lifelong friends, the friends that helped guide me through my life and helped me when I was in tough situations or wasn’t feeling good, the ones that still made sure I was okay even when they knew I was fine, like Severin.
Now it’s time to move on like I did time and time again when I was younger, like I’ll have to do everywhere I go, because there’s always an end, but with an end, there’s always a beginning. Remember It’s never goodbye, it’s just see you later.
Words from Spencer and Jennifer Tyler:
Dear Nash,
Your journey through Elementary School certainly wasn’t ordinary, but the way you handled it all was extraordinary. Since you were born, we have always felt so lucky to be your parents. You are soulful, wise beyond your years, charismatic, empathetic, smart, witty, loyal, hilarious and stronger than anyone we know. What’s so unique about you, is your ability to connect with anyone. Every morning you walk on to campus and talk to just as many adults as kids. People are just drawn to you because you make everyone you engage with feel seen and heard. You’ve had to grow up very fast over the last few years in order to handle all the challenges that were thrown your way, but you handled each one like a champion, and you’ve become stronger because of it. It seems like overnight you’ve grown not only in inches, but in maturity, even your joke writing is improving…slowly. We are so proud of all that you’ve accomplished so far, which is more than some people accomplish in a lifetime, and are so excited to watch you continue to grow (taller than your dad). Keep pushing, listening, questioning, learning, thinking, writing, laughing and loving the way that you do, the world is waiting for it!
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Nash, you are a fabulous human being. Kind, hard-working, determined, and indefatigable, you show up every day ready for anything. You love and are loved by your friends, a wide-reaching group of individuals. You are open and eager to be learning in any subject area. You will join in any conversation and get excited about any project. Through all this, you know yourself and advocate for what you need. If a soccer game is too rough, you will play something different. If a lesson is confusing, you will ask for help. If you are not sure what is expected, you will inquire. In many ways, you are the glue for your class, positive, accepting, and open. You make others feel good to be around you. You know this about yourself, much in the way that you also recognize what is challenging for you, and help others to also see themselves more clearly. You have an uncanny ability to make everyone feel better about who they are and what they are doing.

I like how confident and strong and kind you are, and your love for Elmo is super fun! You look on the bright side of things and are very optimistic. It was fun being in book clubs with you; there were good conversations. You’re also the bravest person I’ve met and you always have positive energy. 2023-2024
2019-2020
It was great getting to know you this year and we became good friends. It was fun working on goals projects with you like the baseball game and skate park. I love your CIA video because it was funny and clever. You cheer me up by being there and just being a good listener.
You are such a self-advocate. You tell people what you need in a positive way. You even ask for help from other students. That can be a really tough thing to do. It’s something to look up to. For example, once you asked me to help you with how to draw a face. It actually made me super happy. You are so positive and always have a smile on your face. Even when your team is losing, you still have a great time. You are so open and flexible and always up for new ideas.
You always include others and don’t judge a book by its cover and make sure to make others laugh! Thank you for not being afraid to be yourself! You are a wonderful person and I enjoy being in your company. Do you remember last year when we were so rudely put in different classes and broke the 6 year chain, it was depressing! Ever since Youngers you’ve been an amazing friend. Always telling jokes, making everything funny, and making my day better whenever I’m down. I admire your perseverance and dedication. You’re a really good friend to have, you’re the perfect balance of helpfulness and humor.

Seven Years at PS1
Do you like to read? I love to read. My favorite genre is fantasy. In so many ways, PS1 is like a fantasy novel. When I first entered this magical land, I was nervous, but excited to learn how to use my powers. My teachers, in Youngers, taught me how to read and count. Together, my friends and I battled the ghost in the MPR and stage fright during circle times. We used our pencils as wands to create new stories and learned how to take care of our class Guinea Pigs, Dot, and Fire.
I was finally in Bridge. I couldn’t wait! The year was off to a great start, but soon we were sent through a portal to an alternate reality because of this thing called COVID. Suddenly, home was school and school was home, all my friends were little squares, and my dog was allowed in every class. When we were finally allowed to go back to school, I was both excited and sad. I could not wait to see my friends and teachers again, but I would miss my dog. When we came back from the other universe, we realized things were different from before. The characters wore masks, and magical wands were stuck up our noses to see if we had COVID. Still, it was amazing to be back. From shooting our own Flora and Ulysses movie in Pete’s car to planning our dream road trips, it was an incredible couple of chapters.
Soon, I was in Olders. I was excited to see how the story finished, but I was also sad that I was reaching the end of the book. There were so many new things I got to do from memorizing lines for our Shakespeare plays to dissecting brains. It felt like it was only days before it was spring again. Here I am at the end of my speech and at the end of my time as a student at PS1. I want to thank all of you who helped me throughout my seven years at this school. Thank you to my teachers for being super supportive. Thanks to a librarian who always knows what books I want before I do. Thanks to my classmates for being so amazing and kind. I will miss all of you when I go through a new portal to middle school. Also, thanks to my family for always being there for me.
Words from Stacey and Will Staples:
Dear Noemi,
You were born persistent and adventurous! Our first memories of you include you scaling the back of the couch to peer out our front window and observe the world outside. From an early age, you would climb and explore so fervently that strangers would comment! When you were just six months old, you took off crawling with surprising speed and strength all the way to the living room to chase your grandparents’ dog. As a toddler, you would wake early, dress yourself independently, and get to work building such tall creations that we would often find you perched atop a stool or chair in order to reach your impressive structures. You have always loved nature, arts and crafts, and learning.
As you entered school, we watched you continue to explore with persistence. PS1 is a special place that encouraged you to pursue your many interests and identify new ones (recruiting classmates to your dog sledding team, climbing on the 12th Street wall, reading ALL the books with Christina, doing your part to protect the environment, researching odd creatures lurking in the midnight zone, reading Shakespeare, putting yourself out there as a grad ambassador, imagining yourself as a printmaker in colonial Boston, participating in scientific experiments…). Importantly, you learned to continue taking risks with the support of your caring PS1 teachers, administrators, and friends. We admire how kind, perceptive, and generous you are with others. You act courageously and have a clear sense of self. You surround yourself with friends who bring out the best in you. You aspire to have a positive impact on the world. In middle school, we know you will continue to build on your strengths, try new things, and take a wide variety of classes that feed your endless curiosity. We are so proud of you and couldn’t be more excited for you to discover what lies ahead!
Love, Mom and Dad
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Noemi, you have a strong internal compass. Passionate about your friends and the state of the world, you have a clear sense of self and live according to your values. You care about the environment, you love learning, you want your friends to love nature and hiking the way you do, you have a strong work ethic, and you are a good friend. Your depth and balance draws others to you for fun, for learning, and for important conversations. You prefer to be honest and transparent, which you do with ease and care, making it appealing for both children and adults to engage with you. You love the outdoors and find interesting ways to spend your recess, inviting others who are also looking for fun. You are grounded and interested in challenging yourself with some healthy risk taking, particularly out in nature and with opportunities like participating in the class play or serving as an admissions ambassador, and remain comfortable knowing that you can check in with a trusted adult for feedback if you aren’t sure on your own about the boundaries.

Words from friends:
You are nice to play with me on the monkey bars. I think you are awesome at monkey bar tag. You play with me a lot and when you play with me, it’s super fun! You are really good at magic. You can be funny at times, and other times you can be active and playful. You are a good friend, really good listener, very good at reading and you are a great writer. I think you are a really good artist and athletic.
2018-2019
You help me make stuff in the sandbox and you make funny jokes. I’ve seen you be nice to other kids and you always help me. You solve lots of math problems and I like it because I follow your example. When you jumped to the second ring on the monkey bars, you inspired me. When I don’t have a friend to play with, you play with me.
You make a great teammate! You always come up with the best of plans but still listen to my ideas. You make games really fun because you challenge others. During Grandparents and Special Friends Day presentation, you were great at presenting your part. You spoke so confidently about what you did for your social studies project. You are so inclusive. You invite different people to play with you and your friends. You make everyone feel good.

2019-2020
Since I met you, you always meant so much to me. You are a really generous and kind friend. I do not know what I’d do without. Thank you for being a true and honest friend. What I like about you is that you are super-duper funny! I you’re your laughs. I miss how confident you are on the monkey bars. It inspires me! I liked it when you shared with the class about mushing and showed us pictures.
2021-2022
You are funny and have really funny things to say. Our Flora and Ulysses books club was so fun especially when we made the “you know what” campaign. Don’t ever forget about WSWSP! Noemi, you are really good at sports like climbing and quidditch and I love playing Jail with you during recess. I like your personality. I appreciate how strongly you felt when we debated how dogs are better than cats: because it’s true! I mean I like dogs better than cats! I love how you are so adventurous and you’re not afraid to be yourself!
Noemi, You are joyous, kind, smart and funny. I admire your confidence and I like how you do your own thing and you are always yourself. I love the stories that you share about what you did over the weekend. I think they are always very interesting. You are good at rock climbing, and have impressive stories about hiking; you are very adventurous! I like playing handball with you. It is fun being partners in math. You are always the best person to work with because you have great ideas and listen to my ideas too. You always help others and include them - it is clear that you care about your friends. You’re such a good person. I just have one more question…you read so much, do you think you read all the books in our classroom library this year?!
2023-2024
I love hanging out and chatting with you because you’re such a chill and funny person. I love how I can just talk to you about something and we can get into a fun conversation. You are an amazing friend and a hard worker. You always have your hand up in class and you always try your best in all the things you do. You have been such a great friend to me and I am so thankful. You are a great reader, and you are always a good book club discussion partner. You are like a twin to me . We have so much in common too ! We love hiking ,climbing and animals and are both pescatarian. It makes it feel like being pescatarian is not weird anymore. You also encourage me to try new things.

One Year at PS1
My PS1 experience has overall been really good. Everything has been great and everyone has been so nice. I have made many friends and learned so so so much. I am very happy to have had this opportunity to go to this amazing amazing school. Since the first day I have felt very welcomed to the community. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to have gone here. I am glad to be able to stand here today and give my speech.
My experience has been way easier than me in September would’ve thought. It was really easy to make friends. Making friends was easier than I definitely would’ve ever expected. I hope it will be just as easy in middle school. I don’t think I would have made many of the great memories at PS1 without any of my friends. For example, during the grad trip I had a really nice conversation where I laughed and talked a lot. It is something I will probably remember for the rest of my life.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to have been able to move to Los Angeles and to have gone to this school, even with all of the ups and downs this truly been a great year.
Once again thank you so much for this opportunity to go to this amazing school and for the amazing opportunity to be able to deliver this speech.
Words from Michael Carlson and Jane Brodsky:
Dear Orly,
Your name means “a light unto me,” and that is what you have always been to us. This is the second time we have watched you graduate from elementary school, but it is no less of a special occasion. Your transformation over the last year has been amazing, if not easy. Starting a new school across the country is hard. You handled it better than anyone could have imagined. Joining a group in the 7th out of 7 years is hard. You made amazing friends, just like you have throughout your life. Adapting to a new way of learning is hard. You made it your own. You are singularly the most independent kid we have ever met. We are in awe of your ability to be yourself regardless of the situation and regardless of what anyone else is doing. You are so kind, so brave, so smart, so hilarious, and so talented. We are so incredibly proud of you.
Love, Mom and Dad
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Orly, you are creative, reflective, and deep. You were new to PS1 this year from a very different school program and community on the East Coast. You have spent a lot of the fall working to understand who we are at PS1 and how we function. You love to read, especially about history, and are particularly inspired by projects. You are a talented artist and love anime, animation, and turning common items into something new. Your natural curiosity can drive you to engage and participate in class discussions with an interest and commitment that sometimes surprises you. You are funny and empathetic. Children sense your authentic and compassionate nature and find you to be a friend they can count on and a good listener when they need an ear. You have worked hard to build relationships and have found connections that feel authentic and inspiring. While you are still developing the skills to advocate for yourself, advocating for a friend comes easily and naturally. You are brave and independent, walking home by yourself most afternoons and making PS1 your new home.

You have a great sense of humor. Your jokes always make me laugh. You are a fun person to be around and I love the energy you show all your friends. You are a very good artist. Your art style is so cool and creative, whenever I see your art it inspires me to draw more. Keep reading and keep going to your bookstore. I love spending time laughing with you and talking. I hope that you never lose your sense of humor!!! I love how you are so expressive, and are your own person, with your own style. You know what to say at the best times, and I love how we can communicate without even talking.

Seven Years at PS1
I’ve been at PS1 for seven years. Throughout those years I met my friends who are there for me everyday. Sometimes friends who go to the same school and spend a lot of time together grow to like each other even more. My friend is PS1, PS1 is how I got my education. PS1 has room to grow everyday. PS1 has been by my side since day one, PS1 got me through everything.
In Youngers I was in the Yellow Class where I learned how to read and write books. We could write about anything and turn it into a book, and then read the books afterwards. I remember when I was first making friends. Somebody dropped their lunch so I gave him some of my lunch. We became lifelong friends. We were so close that we did everything together. We were in the same class for two years in Youngers.
Then I moved up to Bridge Class where I met some new friends. I remember that I had the chance to do outdoor goals where you could do whatever you want. I did parkour with five other people. We were a team.
Then covid hit. I was devastated because I knew I couldn’t see my friends in Green Class. After a year I moved up to the Blue Class where I could see my friends again four times a week, and the other day I was still online. It’s a step up but we had to wear a mask and I didn’t know what my friends looked like.
After one year I moved to the Middles Class where I could see my friends, but for the first weeks we had to wear masks. At least I could wave to my friends. I remember that we had these little smoothies at hot lunch and we drank them all, then filled the bottles with water and flipped them. Sometimes the bottles would land, sometimes they wouldn’t. I also remember that we loved Rubik’s Cubes so much that my teacher bought little Rubik’s Cubes and there were twenty of them.
Then in Olders I was the most scared. It was the biggest jump I’d ever experienced. It was the scariest because I didn’t know if my friends would be in the same class as me. Turns out I’ve made so many memories during Olders, One of those memories was creating characters from Colonial Boston. My character was Willem Totitoes. I loved learning history this way. I will cherish all of my rich memories of learning and growing with my friends at PS1. And now here I am. I didn’t know if I would make it, but I’ve worked together in a team along the way. As Michel Jordan once said “There is no I in team, but there’s an I in win.” And this is the biggest win I ever had in my entire life.
Words from Lucia Alcantara Chibane and
Dear Rayan, Congratulations! We are so proud of YOU today and every day! You are a wonderful son and brother, and we are very thankful to share our days with you! We admire how you help others and are a supportive friend to your classmates and teammates. You are a very kind person and can make friends wherever you go. Being your parents and watching you grow has been an absolute delight. Through determination and perseverance, we have seen you try new things, learn, and accomplish many goals. We have witnessed you embrace your education, friends, and many opportunities at PS1 and beyond. We look forward to sharing your journey ahead and celebrating your many accomplishments. You have so many gifts and talents.
We love you so much!
Mama, Papa, and Gabriel
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Rayan, you are a kind and gentle soul, a good friend to classmates, and a curious and quick learner. You are warm and responsive in your human interactions, passionate and determined on the soccer field, and sometimes surprised by your academic skills and prowess. A quiet individual who prefers to share your humor and playfulness with children, you have recently decided that adults are also worthy of engagement and have begun to engage in conversations with adults without waiting for them to come to you. You have a thoughtful perspective, many wonderfully silly ideas, and a real interest in connecting with the people around you. You are also a performer who delights in briefly taking center stage, often with quite well-developed dance moves. Math is a particular area of interest and you eagerly apply your many skills to problem solving situations. You demonstrate an impressive willingness to stick with a problem, turning it over and considering multiple possibilities. You are open to accepting help when needed, but also enjoy the challenge of encouraging yourself to first try your own wide range of creative approaches.

2018-2019
I like playing with you. One time we played in city blocks and I had a really good time building the blocks high. Rayan you are really good at soccer. You are so positive and so inclusive. You have a great fun side, I always hear you giggling and smiling. You are really skilled at soccer and so kind and you really do include everyone. Once me and my friend were walking downstairs at snack and we bumped into each other and Rayan just gave me and my friend really good company. You are very kind, like when people get hurt, you check in with them to see that they are okay. You have great sportsmanship all around.
You are so funny and athletic. I love how when you fall you always get back up and go beast mode. I’m glad we’re friends. You’re so kind and sweet. You always have positive energy and positive thoughts. You’re so relaxed and fun to be around. You try to include everyone when they’re on your team. You’re a really good striker, and it’s fun battling it out with you in World Cup at recess and in aftercare. I enjoy hanging out with you. Whenever we talk, it’s so relaxed and chill, and I think you bring a lot of that to our class. You’re a kindhearted person and I admire your positive attitude. You have the best team in Pokemon I have ever seen, and I still can’t beat you. You’re smart and funny and fair, and a great classmate. You’re always ready to try something new, and you make sure everyone feels supported. I am so glad I got to have you in my class this year.

As I was writing this speech, I realized my time at PS1 was coming to an end. It seemed like a week ago I was in red, learning days of the week and how to do simple math. Yesterday I was in the blue classroom loft, staring out at the afternoon sun casting a golden glow into the room.
Time is magical, it can speed up or slow down, depending on how you want it to, making years feel like distant memories, drifting afloat on the sea of the past, and the future. It’s so bizarre, it seems to move like an ocean, out of your control, but still incredible, waves of thoughts break upon the hot sand, as you can only watch, and listen.
It feels as if I was here for a heartbeat, and to me, that is what makes it special, you don’t have the power to control everything, you can only control yourself, and your choices.
Looking back on my first year here, I thought it would take forever to graduate. You may feel that too, and to that I would like to say, ”You will get there, you can do it, I believe in you, and even though I will not be here next year, I still know you all will do the most incredible things when you grow up.” I know that since PS1 prepares you for the world.
To finish off my 7 years here, I would like to acknowledge my teachers, my classmates and my parents. Thank you, for always being there for me, to my parents, for giving me this extraordinary opportunity. And to my teachers, for guiding me on this journey.
Dear Ryan,
You breezed in as Finn McCool and stole their hearts. Ryan Lima, there isn’t one here. Oh, he told us his name was Finn. Amazingly, no need to worry, they loved you for it.
And we loved that in that moment, we knew your passion, creativity and exuberance had a new place to grow and thrive, PS1.
Curve ball, first year, two best pals placed in a different class. Your response, first day, a new best friend. Finn, to our great joy and delight we have discovered that Resiliency is your middle name.
Blue Room, hitting your stride, covid bang, online, no problem friends laugh just as hard through headsets and surprise there’s extra time to build box cars, trains and airplanes for your eager younger brother.
As if covid wasn’t enough, you’re carted off to NJ to take care of Grandmother. Six months turns into two years, but in true Finn fashion you save the day.
Wheel chocks in place, stabilizer jacks set, fire started, marshmallows toasted, off to bed. Birthday party, no problem, hand made decorations, hearts and signs and love always love.
Meet at the door, get out the walker, help up the steps, helping, loving, there smiling, beaming out love and kindness and laughter though the dark, though the tears, thought the hurt.
You are always a bright light and we can’t wait to follow your light wherever it may lead.
Love, Mom, Dad and Tyler
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Ryan, you love to engage in conversation. You have a wide range of interests and talk with people of all ages with ease and comfort. You have the energy and inclination to back up your interests with hardwork and commitment: surveying the school community on ideas for new features to enhance the playgrounds, leading our student body in a town hall discussion to identify the impediments to keeping the bathrooms clean, and presenting to prospective families about your experiences in elementary school. You are the child I turned to for help with a 1st grader who was struggling with morning arrival, and as expected you quickly built a friendship with the younger student that lasted long past the time I was watching. You came to help your parents with their shift working at the Fall Festival and ended up covering their slot and all the others, having so much fun making the festival enjoyable for others that you saw the time as a lucky opportunity. You are excited to come to school every day and assume that you will enjoy every potential friend and learning opportunity that crosses your path.

Acting is like life. Most people aren’t ready to start a new scene, yet you have to trust the director.
You can take as many takes as you can, but none of them will be the same. The director can tell you “Cut!” more times than you can count yet you try over and over until they get the take they wanted. I’ve been told this many times before, but I’ve never let that stop me.
No matter how many scenes I’ve had, no matter how many times I’ve been told “Cut!” I kept trying over and over until it was right. Yet in real life you only get one opportunity to make your scene count, and that’s life—only getting one take.
Everyone gets one take which is usually taken for granted yet I think we should live life like it’s our last scene, our last take and we shouldn’t take “Cut!” for an answer.
I’m almost ready for my new scene. In acting you have to be ready to take your new shot and I think that I’m ready. Because of the many struggles I’ve overcome, it feels impossible in the moment until you overcome it.
There’s a quote that I love and wanted to share with you all today. “Hate has four letters but so does love, cry has three letters but so does joy, enemies has seven letters but so does friends, all you can do is pick the positive side in life”. Which is what I plan to do until the end of my scene, because I have realized I am the director of my own life.
My many laughs, adventures, and memories I’ve had at PS1 have been unlimited. It’s time to make more memories in my new scene.
Goodbye PS1 and hello to Wildwood.
Words from Susan and Brian Doolittle:
Dearest Scarlett,
You are a force. You are a powerful bundle of creative magnetic energy that is unstoppable. You are a funny, brilliant, loving girl with a big empathic heart. You wear your feelings on your sleeve and express your ideas with joyful abandon and we love that about you. Your passion for life and inspired creations are truly incredible and it’s so much fun to watch you express yourself creatively and go after what you want with total determination. We love to play with you! We laugh and learn so much together! We have seen you grow by leaps and bounds here at PS1 and we are excited to be with you, as you move on to your next adventure. Scarlett Rose we are so proud of you, we will always be here for you, and remember, no matter how big you grow, you will always and forever be, our Rosebud.
We love you with all our hearts.
Your family, Mama, Daddy, Nicholas, Grandma, Jason, Toby, Lolly and Yeti spagetti pumpkin pie.
Words from Susannah Wolf:
Scarlett, you are a passionate and thoughtful person with a clear sense of justice. You love to be dramatic but do not stand for social drama. A natural storyteller, you are vivacious and verbal. You speak up appropriately, ask for adult help when needed, and hold others accountable for making good decisions as members of our school community. You were the perfect first volunteer to lead our town hall conversation in which you and your team had the entire student body consider, describe, and remediate a challenge at school. You brought characteristic empathy and maturity to what ended up as a discussion of bathroom behavior, helping us to leave the meeting with commitments from all the students for change. You bring your same community sense to your friendships, making the effort to welcome and include others, and to treat them with the same respect you ask for from others. Relationships of care are essential to you; you derive pleasure from the idea that you are helping others, and find deep meaning for yourself in what you get from the relationships.

D. Severin Charles Marks
Seven Years at PS1
Seventeen years ago my sister, Maggie, first walked through the gates of PS1. Seven years later, my sister Esmé walked through the gates for the first time. Then, three years later, I walked across the gates of PS1. Both of my sisters then graduated. Now here I am, the last of my family to make a grad speech at PS1.
It’s been a long journey, to say the least. I’ve gone through many different classes, teachers, friend groups, and more. In this time I have learned who I am, and PS1 has helped me shape that identity. I still remember the first day at this school. I was waiting outside Red Class, wondering what would be waiting for me in the classroom. What was waiting for me was the key to this journey at PS1.
A key moment in my time here was the pandemic. It meant staying home for much longer than usual, and learning how to use a laptop. I think that that was the most significant year of school. I adapted to the new learning environment, while at the same time, I had to adjust to the new class. Although the pandemic sucked, it really helped with my character development, and taught me to not only focus on what’s happening right now, and also focus on what’s yet to come. This has formed who I am today.
It seems very surreal that I am standing here today giving this speech. In Youngers, I thought that I would never graduate. Yet here I am, giving my grad speech. Myself, as well as every other grad here, will never see PS1 as a student again, and instead see it as a memory. A memory that would change our perspective of the world, a memory that would shape our lives. I wish I could stay at this school, but everyone needs to move on at some point. Like I said, I have two sisters who both graduated from PS1. This is the reason that this is such a pivotal moment for me. For seventeen years, my family has had somebody involved with this school. For nobody in my family to be at PS1 will be weird, to say the least.
I hope that I made my mark at this school, and I passed along a good attitude to younger students who look up to Olders. PS1 has been a part of my life since before I was even born. I’ll always remember the highs and lows that I went through at this school. Every end has a new beginning, and I’m prepared for that new beginning, and wish all my fellow graduates a great new beginning in middle school.
Words from Kerri Speck and Paul Marks:
Dear Severin,
Congratulations on your graduation from PS1! This day brings forth a big transition for you and our family -- one that we have all been looking forward to and one that is going to bring much emotion. It is possible to feel happy and sad at the same time and I think that is going to be what graduation day will feel like. Happiness because you have totally embraced your PS1 experience – you’ve been a star on the soccer field, an impressive and helpful grad ambassador, a robust performer through the many Circle Times, after school shows and Shakespeare performances and, of course, an impresåsive student overall. Happiness because you will be attending a school that was your top choice all along and one that will give you the opportunity to continue to grow into the amazing person that you are. All that being said, there is some sadness when something ends. Especially when that something is being a student at a school you have been attending pretty much since the day you were born!
You are kind, thoughtful and helpful. You befriend the younger kids at school, and that friendship empowers them in such an important way. When you have an issue or concern, you don’t shy away from approaching others who can help support you with solutions. You hold the door open for people. These may seem like small things, but they signify to us that you are self-aware and have a sense of the impact you can have on the world and the people around you.
We are so lucky to have you as our son. My heart is full when I think of you and I love spending time with you. One of my favorite times of the day is when we do Connections together before bedtime.
I hope that you remember your time at PS1 with fondness, and as you continue your academic journey, I hope that you continue to be the inspiring, calm and caring person that you are today.
We love you very much!

Words from Susannah Wolf:
Severin, you are reflective, academically curious, and fun to be with. Highly sought out by friends who know that you bring both skill and humor to any situation, you are always right in the thick of any social or athletic activity. Classmates are drawn to you for your strong skills, your calm demeanor, and your sense of fun: lunch seats are claimed in proximity to you and people want to be your partner because they know that it will elevate their own engagement and level of discourse. You are often found at the center of any activity because others know you have good ideas. You create games that center your Kindergarten carpool buddy and you suggest plans for the community service club. You trust that children and adults will be interested in what you have to say and you manage that responsibility with grace. This confidence allows you to take appropriate risks, such as teaching dance moves with friends from the stage of our holiday concert and trying out ideas you have not fully vetted, all of which benefits you and even more so, the group as a whole. You consistently fully engage in academic tasks and, without claiming a lot of airtime, elevate the level of discourse.

Seven Years at PS1
I am an artist. For me, art takes time. I like to use my sketches, inspiration, and ideas to make more original drawings. But it takes a lot of time to make the ideas work.
When I first went through PS1’s doors, that was when this paper was set before me. As time went on, I drew a scribble and started to turn it into something greater. As more time passed, my drawing got better. I made mistakes, but instead of quitting and giving up, I came back to it. I gained wisdom from conflict. I gained confidence that even if times were hard, they would get better
But you can’t work on one artwork forever. Eventually you need a new start, spend all your time on one drawing you can’t move on to the next. Even if you don’t want to, you have no choice. Time doesn’t stop, your ideas don’t stop either.
As I stand here today under this tree, this place was once just a drawing, a dream, and an idea that became something greater. Sure there were mistakes, trials and errors. Most importantly the idea never died out.
I have been waiting for a new idea, a new drawing, a new paper. I know the next step, I’m ready to say goodbye to this drawing and to move onto the next. A new idea is forming, time is starting to start again, even if I’m not ready for the next step, even if I’m scared about the next idea, I have the experience of this drawing, and I’m ready for the next.
Our Dearest Zee, Congratulations on graduating from PS1!!! We are so incredibly proud of you. You have worked so hard this year and we are in awe of your tenacity and fortitude. We have watched you grow into the most beautiful human being both inside and out. We know it hasn’t always been easy, but you have navigated the ups and downs that life has thrown at you and we are more confident than ever that you can handle anything that comes your way. You are kind, caring and passionate and have an empathetic heart for all people. You see the world with openness and curiosity and always strive to do your best. When you start a task, whatever it is that you set your mind to do, you work hard to achieve your goal.
Watching you develop as an artist has been breathtaking as we do not know where your artistic abilities came from for they are innate to you. We are amazed by your commitment and dedication to your craft, the countless hours you put into your work. The way you express yourself and your feelings though drawing and creating unique characters is such joy to behold and we cannot wait to see how you continue to grow this gift for drawing and creative expression as you go into middle school.
Your imagination and story telling abilities have always been vivid and captivating. You are so creative, quirky, funny, interesting and unique. You make us laugh every day with your silliness and wacky sense of humor!
Your natural athletic ability both delight and shock us when we see you fly by in a flash and we can’t wait to see you run track, cross country, continue working hard at soccer or any other sport you choose. You can achieve anything you put your mind to. All the talent and God given gifts are there for you.
You are the love of our lives. We are beyond elated at this wondrous achievement you have reached in completing your seven year journey at PS1. We are so grateful and blessed that God allowed us to be your parents. We are absolutely assured that you are ready to face all challenges that lie ahead and cannot wait to witness your next journey into middle school at Archer!
We love you always,
Zee, you are a funny, honest, creative, curious, and sensitive human being. You love to draw and have filled many pads of post-its with your detailed and compassionate anime images of your friends, family, classmates, and teachers. Doodling is a favorite pastime and your images spill over into any paper surface around you, sometimes accompanied by messages from the characters that speak your feelings. You approach the world with care, moving at your own pace to engage with those around you in ways that feel good to you. You have a lively group of friends in your class, can be drawn into play and conversation with those who take the time, and will work respectfully with any of your classmates, but sometimes choose to be on your own rather than join social interactions that don’t feel good to you. You have strong academic skills in many different areas, particularly history and writing. Your work presents a unique perspective and fresh take on whatever topic is being considered. You often add insight to the questions and comments in a class discussion, having given each and every topic the benefit of your deep and reflective thinking process.

She’s very funny and at lunch we were making up jokes and she made up one that really made me laugh. And right now, we are doing a comedy act and came up with a really good and funny idea. She’s really kind as well as funny and she easily shows her feelings so we know how she is honestly feeling and has an upbeat energy always. She’s really, really an expert artist and drawing talent and so fun to play with. She is also a really good tagger at recess! Whenever we play Elimination Tag, sometimes she always wins, even if I get a good start. I remember once during PE, she pretended to have a remote control and when she pushed it, I would do something really funny like fall down. She also makes up really funny nicknames.
