Introduction - SOCHI 2014 Russia, an Olympic power which has won 293 Winter Games medals, has never hosted the Winter Games. And although Moscow was host to the Summer Olympics in 1980 during the Communist era, Russia has never hosted any Olympic games as an independent country. Now finally, the city of Sochi has been elected as the host city for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014 and officials are not only gearing up to make this the best Winter Olympics ever, but also to mark this as a turning point in making Russia a more open and democratic nation.
Unsurpassed Excellence The vision of Sochi 2014 is to unite the resources of the city of Sochi, the Krasnodar region and the Russian nation to develop in Sochi greatly needed sports and resort infrastructure, in a sustainable, inclusive, environmentally responsible manner. Their goal is to deliver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games of unsurpassed excellence for the athletes, the Olympic family, the Paralympic family and the world.
Inspire and Energise The Sochi 2014 Games will provide a new gateway for winter sport in Russia. Part of its legacy will look to establish Russia’s first internationalquality training and competition facilities for Alpine skiing, sliding sports and ski jumping. The facilities in Sochi will inspire the youth of the nation and energise the growth of winter sports, serving not only
Russian athletes but also those of an entire region. All the key Olympic infrastructure locations in Sochi have been selected to ensure maximum sustainability and legacy after the Games by addressing existing sport, tourism and commercial infrastructure needs.
Venues Sochi 2014 will provide the Olympic Movement with a “once-in-alifetime” Winter Games experience. The Sochi Olympic Park will offer an innovative solution, situated on the Black Sea coast in an area designated for significant development. It will include all ice venues, the Olympic Stadium, the Main Media Centre (MMC), and the main Olympic Village. It has been designed by experienced Olympic planners to offer athletes and officials, the IOC, the media, the sponsors and spectators extraordinary convenience and opportunities to enjoy the Games. The mountain venues will be only 49 km away from the coastal cluster and are located in the mountain region of Krasnaya Polyana, or “Red Meadow”. The mountain venues are also clustered within a single valley, making travel times short.
Vision Sochi 2014 will utilize the Olympic values and ideals to galvanize and unite the nation, and in doing so, inspire a new generation of Russians who have never experienced an Olympic Winter Games in their country.

OLYMPIC HISTORY The Olympic Games (often referred to simply as The Olympics or The Games) is an international multi-sport event subdivided into summer and winter sporting events. The summer and winter games are each held every four years (an Olympiad). Until 1992, they were both held in the same year. Since then, they have been separated two years apart. The original Olympic Games began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, and was celebrated until AD 393. Interest in reviving the Olympic Games proper was first shown by the Greek poet and newspaper editor Panagiotis Soutsos in his poem “Dialogue of the Dead” in 1833. Evangelos Zappas sponsored the first modern international Olympic Games in 1859. He paid for the refurbishment of the Panathinaiko Stadium for Games held there in 1870 and 1875. The International Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 on the initiative of a French nobleman, Pierre Frédy, Baron de Coubertin (inset picture). The first of the IOC’s Olympic Games were the 1896 Summer Olympics, held in Athens, Greece. Participation in the Olympic Games has increased to include athletes from nearly all nations worldwide. With the improvement of satellite communications and global telecasts of the events, the Olympics are consistently gaining supporters. The most recent Summer Olympics were the 2004 Games in Athens and the most recent Winter Olympics were the 2006 Games in Turin. The
upcoming games in Beijing are planned to comprise 302 events in 28 sports. As of 2006, the Winter Olympics were competed in 84 events in 7 sports.
Winter Games Although some skating events were included in the 1908 and 1920 Games, it was not until 1924 that the Winter Games were accepted as a celebration comparable to the Summer Games and given the official blessing of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Goal of the Olympic Movement According to the Olympic Charter, established by Pierre de Coubertin, the goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play. “Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.”

THE CITY OF SOCHI A fashionable sea-side resort, Sochi is one of Russia’s most popular tourist destinations. If you can imagine a place where the sea is bathed with golden light every sunset - a place where the sands and pebbles of the beach can be enjoyed with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and where you can enjoy almost every luxury that matters - you will most likely be picturing Sochi. This is one of Russia’s finest and grandest cities, a place where time stops ticking as you while away your days at one of the many fine spas, mineral baths or sanatoriums. Sochi is a place quite unlike any other. It arguably has the best weather in Russia as well as some of the best natural springs in the country. Its exquisite beauty and its development as a sea-side resort has lead to it gaining the name “the Russian Riviera.” There is little wonder that this part of the Black Sea has been fought over since the beginning of documented history but it was Russia who was the final victor. The little gem has also seen much activity over the years. It was extensively developed during the communist era in the hopes that it would eventually come to represent the pinnacle of Russian architecture. There is unusual exotic nature due to the unique climate in Sochi. The subtropical vegetation is luxuriant: magnolias, eucalyptuses, palm trees, oleanders, rhododendrons, azaleas, yuccas and other plants, which you can’t see in the streets of other Russian cities. Sochi is the only area
in Russia where there are the northernmost tea plantations in the world; where the citrus plants, such as tangerines, lemons and feihoa ripen; where boxwood and other exotic plants grow. Sochi is one of the rare sites on the globe where sea vacation matches with the rest in mountains. Nowadays Sochi is the modern resort with a developed resort infrastructure, and with a wide range of activities available: fascinating excursions, concert halls, theatres, museums, botanical gardens, numerous cafes and restaurants with variety of cuisines, situated everywhere, mostly in open air – in the parks and on the embankment.
Olympic Bid/Win On July 4th, 2007, The International Olympic Committee elected Sochi as the host city of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014. The vote went to the 2nd round and Sochi eventually came through after Salzburg was eliminated in the first round, followed by Pyeongchang in the second. The Sochi 2014 Winter Games ill serve as a gateway to the future for Russia, opening unprecedented opportunities for the development of winter sport, reinvigorating the entire Sochi region and bringing to life the spirit of Olympism for millions of Russian citizens.

Sochi 2014’s Olympic and Paralympic Games offers a unique moment in time for both Russia and the Olympic Movement, a moment when renewal and regeneration of a region are aligned perfectly with the needs of the Olympic Movement and the planning and hosting activities for a Winter Games.
City Host Logo The logo for the Sochi 2014 Olympics encompasses the very unique nature of the city of Sochi itself and works to create an inspirational and forward moving look for the Games. In no other Russian city will you find such a balance of sea and mountain as well as the occurrence of the palm tree. Using the tree as the main metaphor, the logo embodies the forward movement from the sea, which is encased in the mountains forming the base of the tree, to the snowflake, a symbol of the Winter Games as also representative of the leaves of the palm tree. Color Palette Inspired by the colors of the city itself, the color palette covers the vast array of bright, unique and energetic colors that fill the city. This was especially important to do in order to express a renewed and more open and youthful image of Russia itself. Various gradients of color were used as well to enhance the expression of energy and renewal throughout the ID system. It is also important to note the use of green in the ID system. When used in conjunction with other main color families in the system, it is usually used as the initial color of a gradient going from green on through the range of colors within the other main color family. This is used to illustrate the unique nature of the city landscape itself and the vast array of color in going from the sea to the mountains, and ultimately to the sky and sun.

Type Styles Inspired by the Stalinist architecture that is still prominent today even in the city of Sochi, the typeface of Larissa was chosen as the primary typeface for embodying similar structure as well as embodying a great sense of energy and sportiness. The secondary typeface of Humanist 777 was chosen in alignment with the expressing the brand personality of Russia presenting itself with a more relaxed, open and welcoming feel for the Olympic Games. The script typeface of AT Studio Script was chosen for the tagline for its look as an unconventional, yet inspirational script typeface.

Pictograms In developing the Pictograms, which represent each respective sport in the Games, a couple of factors were taken into consideration: (1) Russian athletes have won more medals than any other country in the history of the Olympic Winter Games, which is a testament to Russian athletes being very well trained, accurate and precise, especially in winter sports, and (2) Russia is looking to a facilitate a renewed and more energetic image of the country through these Winter Games. With these factors in mind, it was important to create visuals of athletes with precise, yet very energetic move and flow. The Pictograms have an image of being in the very middle of motion which is also symbolic of where Russia is in their change process at this point. In addition, a lesser well known fact is that Sochi means “ juicy” in Russian, so with that in mind, each pictogram was given an extra “juicy” effect in expressing the new and fast forward moving energy of Russia.

Secondary Elements Secondary elements were drawn from the logo itself and used to express the brand personality of the Games throughout the ID system. Starting with the palm/snowflake, the pattern derived from it is that of the sun image which sits atop of the The Railway Terminal Station, Sochi’s most familiar building, and the first landmark seen by visitors on approach to the city. Used throughout the banner system as well as on other printed applications, this pattern gives a sense the Games welcoming in a new day for Sochi and Russia as a country itself. The second element of the “sea is used as a pattern throughout the ID system not only as an underlying current of new energy, but also as a symbol of renewable energy when each piece of the pattern is separated out in four corners. The third element is taken directly from the palm tree itself with its extraordinary leaves being used as extraordinary and inspirational lines of energy throughout the ID system.

The Sochi 2014 venue plan presents an unprecedented level of compactness and convenience. The functional compactness of the Sochi 2014 plan will provide maximum convenience for the Olympic Family, the media, and also for sponsor guests and spectators to attend multiple events in a single day.
Event Tickets Event tickets for the sporting events make use of all the elements in the ID system for the Games in order to give a full spectrum of color, inspiration and energy for each event. As mentioned earlier in the Color Palette section, green is used as a base color in developing the gradients with other color families in order to express spectrums of color from sea to mountain, sky and ultimately the sun. Also to be noted is the use of “cold” colors such as blue and purple being used for outdoor/ mountain events and “warm” colors such as the orange being used for inside/stadium events.

Sochi offers the Olympic Movement an extraordinary opportunity to honour the environment in the celebration of the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games. With soaring mountain ranges overlooking a subtropical city on the coast of the Black Sea, Sochi provides the most dynamic natural setting in the history of the Olympic Winter Games.
City Host Banners The city host banners make use of the full spectrum of colors used in the ID system. Secondary elements are split with using the sun pattern in banners 1, 3, and 5 and using a derivation of the “renewable sea pattern along with energy lines in banners 2 and 4. In terms of color, the main city banners make use of the sea to mountain theme while the Olympic brand banners make more bold use of the sun and sky thematic color scheme.

Stadium Banners The center of the stadium banner is made up of three banners focusing on the precise, yet energetic and forward moving Pictogram image for that sport. The secondary elements of the “renewable sea pattern and energy lines make up the undercurrent that is pushing the sports figure forward and keeping him in motion. As the central part of the full banner system, the main sea to mountain spectrum of color is also used in this banner section. The outer banners which house the name of the sport use the bolder sky to sun theme and make use of the sun pattern at the bottom, again reiterating the idea of a new day and the Games as the gateway to the future for Russia.
