The city’s municipal election was November 5, and we have now officially moved to districts. You can learn more about your district boundaries, councilmembers, and next year’s election by visiting our website at palmspringsca.gov. In addition, I would like to inform you that beginning in 2020, City Council meetings will move from the first and third Wednesdays of the month to the second and fourth Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. You can view City Council meetings live online at palmspringsca.gov or on Palm Springs Community Television Channel 17.
Finally, the city’s premier event—the 31st Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, January 2 to 13, 2020—is right around the corner. t press time, the honorees for the 31st Annual Film Awards Gala have yet to be announced, so it’s anyone’s guess as to which Tinseltown luminaries will be treading the red carpet outside the Palm Springs Convention Center on the dazzling evening of January 2. What is certain is that the star power will be blinding. Poolside Palm Springs sat down with Harold Matzner and Mary Hart to chat at Matzner’s Spencer’s Restaurant at the Mountain.
finest and we all have a blast. Plus, we love the fans who show up, which are in the thousands now. I remember the first year I hosted, there were maybe a couple hundred people out there on the street. Now it’s like arriving at any other major awards show in Hollywood.
POOLSIDE PALM SPRINGS: What keeps the gala fresh for you after all these years?
HAROLD MATZNER: We’ve come such a long way. We really have. It’s the biggest show of its kind in the industry. There’s nothing bigger anywhere. Not only the number of people—we sell out every single one of our 2500 seats, which go on sale the first week of August—but the size of the production.
MARY HART: Just the fact that we have a rotating bevy of A-list stars. Every year, the studios come out with great new pictures, and the casts change. So, for me, it’s being excited about the new crop of movies and which actors are going to be there. Even though it’s January 2 and everybody is still getting over their New Year’s Eve hangover, they show up in their
MARY HART: And what’s so great is that the same team does it every year. And you know what? We’re a really good team. We’re all professional. It makes me come in and know that even if I’m reading through the script in rehearsal the morning of the event, I feel confident that I’m in the best hands possible. That’s a big deal.
HAROLD MATZNER: What I love about this show is that it’s not taped. There aren’t any constraints. There’s no hard script. People can relax and just say and do what they feel like saying and doing. That’s why it’s such a crowd-pleaser. But the reality is actors, directors, producers, studio people come here because of the results we produce. For more than three decades, the vast majority of our honorees have also been nominated for an Oscar the same year we’ve paid tribute to them. Last year, six won the Academy Award, including the four top awards. That’s unbelievable. POOLSIDE PALM SPRINGS: Harold, tell me about the festival’s partnership with the city. HM: It’s critical. First, the city provides really important funds. No matter how good a show is, you’ve got to be able to pay for it. The city helps us to do that. And the way the city embraces the festival really encourages other people to do the same thing. It’s an example of great fundraising leadership. It’s valued and it’s appreciated. Residents are urged to participate in the two popular events—one in February, the other in October ure, the Palm Springs midcentury modern extravaganza known as Modernism Week drew more than 162,000 visitors from all 50 states and 25 countries to its fall 2018 and winter 2019 merriments, but that doesn’t mean residents can’t get in on all the fun. The trick is to nab spots early.

At press time, tickets for the 15th iteration of the festival (February 13-23, 2020) have just gone on sale and are going fast. But don’t despair. Try your luck and visit modernismweek.com to see what’s still available of more than 350 stellar events, including walking tours, bicycle tours, bus tours, garden tours, home tours across some 30 neighborhoods, educational talks, film screenings, a classic car show, cocktail soirées, and the ever-popular Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale. And remember that a portion of every ticket sale benefits the non-profit host organization as well as other preservation,
neighborhood, and community groups. A wild array of new happenings have been added for 2020, including programs celebrating the Alexander family, a panel on the saving of the Sunset Magazine archives, an appearance by Nancy Sinatra at the Plaza Theatre, a Nutty Professor party at the Jerry Lewis House, and a series of talks on Australia’s modern architecture. The entire grand affair kicks off with an opening night party—dubbed “Space Modyssey 2020”—at the Palm Springs Air Museum on Thursday, February 13 from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. As in years passed, CAMP (Community And Meeting Place, at 575 North Palm Canyon Drive just north of Alejo) will be MW’s beating heart, boasting an info desk, a box office, designer lounges, and a theater. It’s also here that popular singing group The Dreamboats will offer free performances. To give you an idea of how this civic

The afternoon affair will include a special screening selection of her work followed by a conversation with the audience. Nancy also promises to bring special celebrity guests! Nancy follows Lily Tomlin, who recently did a special public service announcement asking for community support and explaining the importance of restoring and preserving the Palm Springs landmark. A fundraising campaign to raise funds for the restoration project was recently announced during the State of the City, along with two major donations: $100,000 from Modernism Week and $50,000 from the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation. That brings the total committed for the project so far to over a quarter of a million dollars. The city’s consultant has estimated $10 to $12 million is required to restore the building.

he historic Plaza Theatre in downtown Palm Springs is attracting some big names to help raise the needed money for its restoration.
The theatre, built in 1936, has been the location for Hollywood film premieres, national radio broadcasts, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies. Vacant since the departure of the Follies, the building was recently cleaned up for the State of the City, but the Class One Historic structure still requires significant work. To understand what it will take financially, the city recently engaged international architectural firm Gensler and preservation consultants to develop a restoration and rehabilitation plan which calls for the installation of 670 new seats, significant infrastructure repairs, investment in new theatrical equipment, and structural improvements to ensure the building meets current fire prevention and Americans with Disabilities Act mandates. “The Plaza Theatre is one of the most iconic buildings in Palm Springs,” says City Manager David H. Ready. “Restoring such an important civic institution as this will require significant support from our local community. City of Palm Springs Making Strides Addressing Homelessness Palm Springs Receives $10 Million Award for Homeless Assistance With approximately 232 Palm Springs homeless individuals having found permanent housing thanks to new service programs implemented over the last three years, the city of Palm Springs is making important strides when it comes to addressing homelessness on the west end of the Coachella Valley. A total of 700 individuals also found temporary housing, while 368 took advantage of the city’s Overnight Cooling Shelter, according to a newly updated Homeless Report. In addition, Assemblyman Chad Mayes, with assistance from the City Council Homelessness and Affordable Housing Subcommittee, recently secured Palm Springs $10 million for homeless assistance from Governor Gavin Newsom’s state budget, which the city
will use to address homelessness and help find permanent solutions. Although the County of Riverside is legally responsible for homelessness, poverty, behavioral health, and other social services, over the past three years, the city of Palm Springs has stepped up and committed to finding the funds and resources necessary to implement new programs to help homeless individuals receive the tools necessary to obtain housing and job skills so they can get off the streets and lead more selfsufficient and productive lives. Funding for many of the new programs comes from the city of Palm Springs and a generous matching grant from the Desert Healthcare Foundation. These programs include CVAG’s Housing First initiative, the hiring of two city-
funded Housing Crisis Response Teams, funding for employment and healthbenefit-related wraparound assistance from Martha’s Village and Kitchen, and the support of a successful Overnight Emergency Shelter this summer in partnership with the County of Riverside. The city has continued the overnight shelter that is now funded by the city and Desert Healthcare Foundation. “The city of Palm Springs is committed to addressing homelessness and to finding permanent solutions,” says City Manager David H. Ready. “On behalf of our citizens, a sincere thank you to Assemblyman Mayes, Governor Newsom, and Desert Healthcare Foundation for partnering with us on the funding needed to put services and programs in place that will make a tangible difference.”
City of Palm Springs Employee Spotlight: Danny DeSelms Meet Danny DeSelms, the city’s new emergency management coordinator. He began his position with the Palm Springs Fire Department in August. A Marine and former emergency management and training coordinator for Marine Aircraft Group 13, United States Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona, DeSelms has an extensive background in emergency management and disaster preparedness, and is excited to be taking the lead for the city of Palm Springs. His areas of expertise include emergency response planning and training. Prior to his position in Yuma, he provided emergency management expertise at multiple Marine Corps bases in Okinawa, Japan; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Washington, DC; and at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms. While in the Marine Corps, DeSelms graduated from the Chemical,
Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense School at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He served as part of Operation Eagle during the anthrax attacks in the nation’s capital, where his teams were tasked with finding the extent of the contamination. DeSelms also served with the Task Force for Tsunami Relief Operation in Thailand following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. “Danny DeSelms has an exceptional background coordinating emergency management and disaster preparedness for the United States Marines,” according to Palm Springs City Manager David H. Ready. “His experience managing and responding to largescale emergencies, along with his expertise in planning and training, will be a significant asset to our city, and we are pleased to welcome him to the executive management team.”
DeSelms earned his bachelor’s degree in emergency and disaster management from American Military University in 2015. “Emergency management and preparedness are a top priority for the Palm Springs Fire Department,” says Chief Kevin Nalder. “We are looking forward to working with Danny and to the wealth of experience he will bring to our organization.” DeSelms also manages the fire department’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program. The Palm Springs Public Arts Commission’s New Street Bench Art Pilot Project Excites Community create the series of benches, with the theme of “Urban Desert Palms and Icons,” on Palm Canyon Drive between Arenas Road and Museum Way. Among the notables other than Garland and Warhol, now appearing on the benches are artists Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Frida Kahlo, and performers Lucille Ball and Elvis Presley (chosen for their connection to Palm Springs).

olorful images of iconic performers and artists like Judy Garland and Andy Warhol—to name but two—are now gracing exteriors of benches throughout downtown Palm Springs thanks to an innovative Street Bench Art Pilot Project conceived by the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission, the City Council Downtown Subcommittee, and Main Street Palm Springs. Artist Tysen Knight was commissioned to
According to Public Arts Commission Chair Ann Sheffer, “We hope to expand this project with more art—and more artists—throughout downtown as well as across the city’s neighborhoods and parks.” Over the summer, the commission created a number of installations in downtown that can be seen along Palm Canyon Drive and Museum Way. The downtown art projects to date also include a sign installation entitled “Finding Our Way” by artist Scott Froschauer at the corner of Museum Way and Palm Canyon Drive, and banners that
proclaim “Art Is Here” and “Palm Springs Art Museum” along Museum Way to celebrate the importance of the museum as a cultural anchor of downtown. “Public art is an important component of the redevelopment of downtown,” according to Palm Springs City Manager David H. Ready. “The City Council is pleased this new pilot project has become such a hit with our residents and visitors, and we want to thank the commission and Main Street for collaborating to bring more exciting public art to downtown.” For the 2019-20 year, the bench project will be expanded to “Art in the Parks” and future projects. Season 3 of Palm Springs Speaks Continues to Wow Audiences
S
ecret deals, rivalries, and catfights from the White House to Hollywood. All the speakers for Palm Springs Speaks Season 3 will share their stories and experiences in this not-to-be-missed series. Season 3 kicked off on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. with former Secretary of Labor and author Robert B. Reich. Chancellor’s professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley, and senior fellow at the Blum Center for Developing Economies, Reich discussed “Finding the Common Good in Uncommon Times.” The next guest of the series is the queen of cliffhangers and a notable Hollywood icon. Dame Joan Collins will appear on Sunday, January 26 at 3:30 p.m. She will regale us with her show “An Afternoon with Dame Joan Collins,” where she will spill the tea about her life on stage and film, lifting the lid on the
highs and lows of her amazing career, from her early years at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art to her iconic role as Alexis Carrington and beyond. This legendary performer, author, accomplished producer, and successful entrepreneur is a must-see! The third announced speaker for the series is none other than Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward, who will appear on Friday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. Known for exposing the Watergate scandal, Woodward offers a historical perspective as only he can, having written about the last nine U.S. presidents and chronicled how the power of the presidency has evolved. The author of 19 books, Woodward will have as his topic
“The State of the American Presidency” and current events. f you’re looking for a great place to get some exercise, then make sure to check out the much-loved Palm Springs Swim Center, located at 405 South Pavilion Way, in the Sunrise Park Plaza complex right next door to the high school. The Swim Center, which is open year-round and used daily, features an Olympic-sized swimming pool that is a wonderful resource for the community. During the year, the pool serves several elite swim teams as well as Palm Springs High School’s boys and girls water polo teams. HOURS OF OPERATION The Swim Center is open to the public seven days a week for both lap swimming and recreational swimming. Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Closed Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. for maintenance)
The pool will be closed to the public on federal holidays, and December 11-15 for swim meets. Introducing the New Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce Board President In July of this year, the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce was proud and pleased to welcome board member John Fritch as its new board president. Originally from Simi Valley, California, Fritch is a professional chef who received his training from Pasadena’s California School of Culinary Arts, where he graduated with honors. His vast experience includes serving not only as a private celebrity chef but as general manager and executive chef for a variety of corporate entities. Among his many awards and achievements are being named a Top 20 Chef in Los Angeles by the Los Angeles Daily News, being ranked among the “Top 10 Cliffside Dining in the World” from Architectural Digest in 2018, successfully converting traditional restaurants and convention centers into green establishments, pulling off a sit-down coursed meal for 5000, and a multitude of radio and television appearances, including being guest judge on Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race. Since 2016, Fritch—the co-owner (with friend and business partner Ron Wilcox), general manager, and executive chef of Elevated Experiences—has operated the fine dining, café, cafeterias, catering, and bars at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the largest revolving tram in the world, which attracts almost 600,000 patrons (both local and visiting) per year. The mountaintop food and beverage facilities host a wide array of conventions, trade shows, and other special events throughout the year. “I’m very grateful to have been handed the food and beverage reins of one of Palm Springs’ signature tourist attractions—one whose stellar, global reputation precedes itself,” says Fritch. “It’s such an honor to welcome guests as they come to the end of their journey up our majestic, highest peak.” Fritch—whose goal as board president is to enable him, his fellow board members, and the Chamber staff to further assist members in their commercial ventures—is very thankful for the partnership with the city of Palm Springs, which has made this publication possible. “Poolside Palm Springs is an amazing asset to the entire community,” he says. “It’s a win-win-win-win for the Chamber, the city, business owners, and the residents we all serve.”
