Tra ining School is maintained by Peru State Teachers College to T HEteaching for those tra ining to be teachers.
supply pr<tctic c
The high school is a member of the North Central Association of Col leges and Secondar y Schools. and is listed with those of highest rating by accreditin g age ncies of our state. It is the a im of the school to be conservatively progressive. New ideas o f proved worth are adopted and practiced. A wide variety of studies and acti v ities is offered. besides th.: college preparatory work offered in nea rly all schools. pupils may choose cooking . sewing. home management. typewriting. bookkeeping, vocal and instrumental music. home mechanics . cabinet making. wood turning, general metal work. auto mechanics and swimming. In music the school has been represented for the past four years in dis trict and state contests. In 1930 the orchestra won first place in Class C of the state contest. Th e girls glee club of 1930 won first place in District Two and in 1931 won second place in Class C of the state contest. T his year the girls glee club won first in the M. I. N. K. music contest and the play first in Class B in the M. I. N.K. dramatic contest. In 1931 the basketball team was the champion of the Southeastern Nebraska Athletic Association and this year was the J'unnc rup in both the Southeastern and in the regional tournament. Correspondingly high sta ndards a rc maintained in scholastic work. As there is no other high school in the city t he pupils of the t raining sc hool fo rm a n unse lected group very similar to the group of children which those going out to teach wil l fi nd in the average community. This gives ver y specific training for t heir work. Pupils . studen t teachers. and supervisors co-operate harmoniously to the advantage and bene At o f all concerned. From the very beginning of sc hool, things happened in the Junior High . Officers we re elected in the va rious classes and they immediately began to plan their good times. Probably the high point of the fa ll term for the ninth grade was its H allowe'en pa r t y. Then the parties in the eighth grade! How those girls can fix lunches! Candles. s trea mers. and rable d ecorations made the seventh grade party a memorable occasion. Combined with social activities are physical training. music instruc tion. and the fundamenta ~ subjects w hich. all together, aim toward the development of fine ci tizens.

THE s p a rkling humor a nd clever plot , w ith an element of the mysterious in the play " Intima te Strangers" by Booth T a rkington . brought unrestrained a pproval from the a udience. The characters seemed a ll typical a nd real. Y ou could find a likeness for each cha racter among your acq ua inta n ces. The ch a r acter of Miss S tuart was portrayed exceptionally well. T he part demanded th at the mood t empo be cha n ged quickly from carefree youth to-say, perh aps ninety. This ch a racter was a bly supported by a cast that could p u t over Booth Tarkington 's d e lig h t ful humor a nd romance. Th e p lay was one of th e most s u ccess fu l attempts tha t a ny class h as made in the line of dramatics .

C APTAI N ROSCOE TOLLY was probably the most outstanding guard in Nebraska college football circles during the 1931 season . "'Ross路路 came to Peru in 1929 <tnd at once began to make a name for himself in at h leti cs. Before enterin g college Tolly had never played a game of football. but lack of experience is no drawback to a man of his type. During the 1929 season he made it mighty tough fo r the regula r firs t stringers a nd won t h e respect of every man on the squad. Roscoe also played wonderful football during th e 1930 season and. at the close of a very successful year at guard. was chosen by his teammates to pilot t he 1931 Bob cats. No team could ask fo r a better leader than Roscoe T olly whose record will a lways stan d high in Peru ath letic history. P eru is fortunate that th is a ll-state guard. the lead er o f the 1931 Bobcats. st ill has another football season to play for "O ld Peru."
1931 FOOTBALL VARSITY
T
HE 1931 footba ll season w as entirely successfu l as far as tlw Pc>ru Bobcats were concerned . Not because of the number of games won. but because of the n umber and qua lity of the matel"ia l tha t was broken in during the season. T his mate ria l will be in va luabl e during the nex t few years. Of the twenty-two lettermen. tweh-c arc firs t year men. while only four will not be back for the 1932 season. Th is merely mea ns that the ou tlook is very bright for next season . The sea son was an eve n break as far as the Bobcats were concerned. Peru won four games, lost four路, and tied one. The sc hed ule w as o ne o f the hea\'i est contracted by Peru in recen t years, b u t the Bobcats e m e r ged from the season w ith a total of eighty-six points to the opponents ' s ixt y -o ne. The twenty-five points difference bet, veen Pe ru a nd its opponents showed the team's power . Peru finished seco nd in the N . I. A. A. Conference of w hich Om a ha Univ ersity was champion. This conference consists of Chadron. Kearney. Omaha University. Peru. and Wayne. Each tea m in the conference pla ys ever y o the r con fe re nce team. consequently the Bobcats played four conference games. Non-conference games were played wi th strong tea ms from the N . C. A. C. Conference and with the Mary v ille Teachers College W ildcats of M a r yville . Mo.
C OAC H GLENN G ILKESON has finis hed his second yea r as Head Nlentor of the Peru Bobcat footba ll team. The coach is always the guid ing hand in inte rcol leg iate football and "Gil k" h as certainly been the hand behind th e Bobcats during the past two years. H e not only is a student of foot ba ll. but has a knack of getting his knowledge across to his men and a lso the power of ins tilling "drive" and " fi re" into his teams. Although th e Gilkeson coached teams have not establis he d any outstanding records , th ey ha ve learned many o f those th ings w hich are mos t important and yet are so often overlooked by coaches. Some of these things are : spor tsmanshi p, co-operation. and clean. right liv ing. Th ese a re the things for which our coach. G lenn Gi lkeson . stands and we are proud of him and his r ecord as a man. ath lete. a nd coach.

THEplayed first game of the season was w ith the Maryville W ildcats and '.Vas at Maryville, Missouri. Th e fie ld was soggy and so was not very well adapted to a fast type of open field playing. Because of t h e mud. both teams were forced to hold pretty well to line play unti l the last qua r ter when an aerial attack was resor ted to. As is the case w ith most seaso n openers. the game at M aryville was not flawless. a lthoug h both teams played exceptionally good football for th e first ga me of the season. T he ga me ended w it h M a r yv ille on the long end o f a 12 to 6 score. The Bobcats were the on ly team to score on th e Maryville Wildcats during the 193 1 season. Next came the "B" team from Nebraska Un iversity. T h is game was perhaps the hardest of the season . Alo ng w ith the Nebraskans came s uch stars as Roby, Kroger, Miller, a nd Staab a nd so consequently it was a long evening for the Bobcats. The fact that Nebraska had s uch a formidable team did not daunt the Peruvians however. Statistics o f the game show that P eru outyarded Nebraska a nd outplayed them in every division of t h e game. but t h ere are those unaccountable things known as breaks which enter into al most every .football game and so the score at the end of th e game was 13 to 7 in favor o f th e scarlet clad boys from the University.

THEfor week followin g the Nebraska game. the Doane Tigers came to Peru the annual battl e. As is th e case w ith most scoreless ties this game was relatively uneventful. Peru outdowned and outyarded the Doane team three to one and played in the Tiger's territory during most of the game. but was unable to score. Once again the Bobcats broke over the conference lines and engaged in a battle wit h the Midland Warriors at Fremont. Midland had a team o f veterans. some of wh ich were all-state men, and so could not be called a set-up by any means. The Warriors opened the firing by scoring a touchdown durin g the first quarter. but were upset when Peru came back and marched down the field fo r two touc hdowns in a row and completed one try- for-poin t, making t h e game 13 to 6 in favor of the Peru Bobcats. The game was very re presentative of every style of football. Both teams used a great deal of aerial work as well as stra ight line football. trick plays. and open field football. Play ing conditions were not the best because of a fog. which covered the field making it rather difficult to distinguish the p layers. Ackerson, Peru guard, played a marvelous game at Fremont.

I NG is always a gala time at Peru. T he highlight of th e day H OMECOM was the footba ll game, which was p layed this season w ith the Wayne State Teachers College Wildcats. The game was staged at e ight o'clock on the night of Homecoming , before a crowd of a pprox imately twenty-five hundred. mostly students and alumni. Peru's natura l at h letic bowl was decora ted ve r y beautifully. The words. "Welcome Wayne." we re painted on the ba n k at the east side of the field. The crowd displayed a great deal of en t h usiasm during the course of the game. In addition to being a Homecoming game. the game w ith Wayne was also Peru 's first conference battle and so was doubly important. Th e Bobcats were pitched for the fray and advanced the ball to the W il dcats' goa l line no less than three ti mes, only to be called back for one reason o r another . During t h e second half Wayne was awarded one of those "breaks" of the game and so scored the lone touchdown of the game. This touchdown gave them n ot only the game, but also the conference championship. T his game was another of those affairs where the team which makes the most yards and most downs does not necessarily win.

Peru boys stepped out of the conference for a fifth time and encountered the strong Norfolk team. This conflict took p lace during the Teacher's Convention vacation. and so there were but fe¡w on h and to witness the game. The Bobcats had h eard much of the prowess and power of the Norfolk team and were prepared for a tough battle. They 'l.vere in no sense disappointed for the team from the north put up a great fight. I t was in this game that the Peru first year men began to show their true wo r th. "Bu tsy" Harris was probably the outstanding player of the evening. He scored fourteen points. two touchdowns and two try-for-points. Next came a weeks r est for the Bobcats, after which th ey took to the railroad for a long ride to C hadron to meet the Chadron E ag les on their home field. The Eagles are no easy foe at any time and especia lly w hen met at Chadron. Th e red clad boys from Chadron played a wonderful line game led by th eir e lusive halfback, Nemick, and Miller, a powerful tackle. I t was a ll that Peru cou ld do to hold her own during the first half , but when the E agles began to open up with their passing game the Bobcats at once began to claw and. led bv H atc her a nd Sautter, emerged with a victory. The fin a l score was Peru 18, C hadron 6. Th e long train ride had not been in vain for th e Peruvians.

On the night follow ing the Bethany game the Peru team traveled to Larned. Kansas to meet the Larned Athletic C lub. an amateur team composed of former college stars from Ka nsas Uni versity. Empo ria T eachers. Oklahoma University and oth er leading Universities. Larned presen ted a wond e rful tea m and gave the Bobcats a sound drubbing to the tune of 39 to I 0.
