In addition to the fo rmal meetings, the society has had a number of social meetings. In December the organization .enjoyed ~.buffet supper at the home of Dr. Maxwell. A May breakfast to wh1ch all ehg1ble candidates were invited closed the or<Yanization 's year 's activities. The first Regi;nal Biennial Convocation was held this year in Des Moines, Iowa, on February 3 . Four members from Beta Mu Chap ter- Lydia Mae Wheeler, Geneva Saathoff, Arthur Reynolds, and J ames Perdue-atte nded. The society leads in the arrangements for the Inter-fraternity Banquet, an a nnual spring affair which was originated by the local chapter of Kappa Delta Pi. Each year the Beta Mu Chapter presents a suitable awa rd to the freshman whose schola rship and professional attitude a re outstanding during his year of college work. 65

The initiatory services for new members in November and March followed banquets held in Mount Vernon Dining Hall. T he outstanding number on the fall banquet program was a pa nel discussion , " Our E nglish Beautiful", by M rs. P. :\. Maxwell, Mrs. W. D . Albert, Mrs. L. B. Mathews, and Mrs. ] . W. Tyler. The spring banquet brought a former member, Dwight Waldo, as guest of honor to address the group on a topic rela ti ve to the influence of poli tical sit uations on li terature. Two major projects of the y ear were the Christmas a nd spring editions of " Sifting Sand", a magazine of Peru verse, which is printed on the local chapter 's printing press. In December Sigma Tau Delta Members presented Anna Best Joder's p lay, " The Perfect Gentleman", as a Convocation progra m. At the close of the school year the fra ternity awarded a meda l to the freshman writing the best prose selection during the school year. 67

Student Advisory Council this year undertook the sponsorship of the a nnual Homecoming for Peru alumni. The smoothness of the wellplanned routine of the Homecoming festivities warranted praise for those who were responsible for the day 's activities. I t also fell to the Student Advisory Council to direct and plan the a nnual football banquet. The Social Com mittee has as its du ty the direction of the socia l activities of the campus. Their prima ry fun ction concerns the arra ngements for the allcollege dances throughout the year. An importa n t accomplishment of the year was the purchasing of the public address system to fu rnish music for the dances. Specialty dances and floor shows were perhaps responsible fo r the large a ttendance at our college dances this year.

Women's Athletic Associa tion fi lls an impor ta nt place in coll ege life by providing recreation for girls in the form of sports a nd opportunities fo r the formation of congenia l friendshi ps. One hundred points earned in any sport is the entra nce r equirem ent. Letters are awarded to those who ea rn fi ve hundred poi nts , a nd swea ters a re awarded to those who earn one thousand points. T eam prac tices and tourna ments include each sepa rate sport. Alpha Ert1dito this college join the Scholarship Club. H ere they can mingle with fellow students who a lso hold scholarships. Since 1929 nearly four hundred have joined Alpha Erudito. From this number a suprising ly high percentage have maintained high scholarship throughout their college careers. This year t he club has had some interesting meetings. The first was of a "get-acq ua inted" na ture, at which time new members were welcomed. Other meetings consisted of sp eeches by the sponsor, Mr. S. L. Clements or student me mbers who descri bed summer experiences or discussed college life problems. Special musica l num bers by groups a nd individuals have added much to the regular programs. This organiza tion under the supervision of Mr . Clements seems never to lack spirit or cap a bility. It is the wish of the members that the club go through the p ages of Peru State T eachers College history as active and honorable. 79

Girls C lub is the truly democratic organi zation of the campus. Every girl in school is welcomed to membership. This eighteen-year-old club , having as its a ims: the culti vating of inner poise and grace, promoting of friendship and good fellowshi p, uni ting in ac tion, creating a cultural and apprecia ti ve a tmosphere, manifesting coopera tion for the betterment of the socia l a nd ethical s tandards, making a place for real fun a nd pep at the proper time, creating a spiri t of ind ividual devotion, forming a worth while relaxation peri od , a iding in a fi na ncia l stress period, works for the development of purer wo ma nhood . THE Y. M. C. A. is a n organization of the men on the campus who stri ve to li ve by C hristia n principles. The group through study and experience feels that the ideals of Christ are still sound and applicable to modern life. The purpose of promoting growth in character and fellowship a mong the stud ent body is accomplis hed by weekly meetings. Religious inspiration is offered by the d iscussions of everyday p roblems. 1886 saw t he opening endeavors of the Y. M. C. A. upon our campus. This, the ' ·Y's" fiftieth year, has been progressive. Delegates have been sent to Estes Park, Colorado, and other conferences a nd retreats, the a nnual Father and Son Ba nquet was jointly sponsored by the ' ·Y" and Kiwanis club, and the group has brough t nota ble speakers as Dr. Ennis with philosophies and discussions on socia l life, creative leisure, etiquette and dress, na tional government, and peace problems . Cooperation with the Y. \\·. C. A. to provide interesting joint meetings has been successful. The Y . M. is a wo r thy organization, and it inspires its members to a higher plane of t hought and action . 87

This year rather tha n giving official titl es to each s taff member and restricting him to one phase of yearbook production , the editor and business manager have selec ted helpers who have been called upon for assistance in vari ous phases of the yearbook conception and organiza tion. Behind the staff, Dr. \\"are. the faculty adviser. has always been present to exert a guiding influence a nd a id in avoidi ng or surmoun ting difficulties. In the lat ter part of October the editor and business manager attended the Xational Scholastic Press :\ ssociation Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Here much o f the inspiration and ma ny of the ideas embodied in this book were gleaned. I n his four years of competition, \\'ayne has garnered twelve major letters in the three major sports. Bvdefeating Kearney in the final co nfer e n ce battle, Peru moved into a tie with \Yay ne for first place in the final conference standings. \Yay ne led in conference scoring. having made a tota l of 231 poin ts in 6 games for a n average of 38 points a game. Peru led in defensive, having only 190 points in 6 games or an average of 33 1/3 points a game scored against her . In like a kit ten and out like a Bobca t was the ta le of Peru 's 1936-3 7 basketba ll team. Maryville opened the season by gaining a 40-29 victory, and Nebraska B fell in the final game 48-3 7. In conference ti lts the Bobcats started slow, but finished with six wins a nd two losses, to tie Way ne for the first place in the conference. Track THE close of the 1936 track season found Peru sco ring three firsts to take third place in the I\. I. A. A. con ference track a nd field meet. Riggs won the 100-yard clash setting a new conference record of 9.8 seconds and in the broad jump , j umping 22 feet 8 inches. Hoban threw the javelin 169 feet 6 inches fo r the other first position. The 193 7 season has prospects fo r even a more successful season.

Tennis THis season will find two tennis lettermen return ing . Heck and Perdue. These augmented by W ay ne Schaffer, J erome Snyder. and Bill and Bob Mooney should bring to the front a strong tenn is team. Prospects for this tennis season a re much b r ighter than they were for last year's schedul e. L ast season letters were a lso awarded to Rex Wilson and R ichard Leahy.

You can always tell a non-college student- he has some money. College students come to college for a number of reasons, such as : ( 1) they got in to some kind of a s:.:rape at home, ( 2) they are looking for a man ( that is, the skirts are) , (3) they a re too dumb to get a job, ( 4 ) it gives them a cha nce to borrow on their insurance policy. ( They've heard a lot about this from the old man, a nd they 've always wanted to try it.) College students a re usually blondes and brunettes. Once in awhile there a re some who have peculia rly colored hai r. They are called "titians." These '·titia ns" don't look a ny different from the blondes a nd brunettes (anyway, not much ) , but whenever a female " titian " walks by, all the trousered coll ege students sigh a nd say, " Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, a nd oh boy! " College students don 't like to look nice. They ha te being neat. They think a suit is what one takes to court ; breeches is the plural of heart-balm cases; a nd clean socks are what J oe Louis puts out. College students are very adept at the game called " bluffing.
