The initiatory services for new members in November and March followed banquets held in Mount Vernon Dining Hall. T he outstanding number on the fall banquet program was a pa nel discussion , " Our E nglish Beautiful", by M rs. P. :\. Maxwell, Mrs. W. D . Albert, Mrs. L. B. Mathews, and Mrs. ] . W. Tyler. The spring banquet brought a former member, Dwight Waldo, as guest of honor to address the group on a topic rela ti ve to the influence of poli tical sit uations on li terature. Two major projects of the y ear were the Christmas a nd spring editions of " Sifting Sand", a magazine of Peru verse, which is printed on the local chapter 's printing press. In December Sigma Tau Delta Members presented Anna Best Joder's p lay, " The Perfect Gentleman", as a Convocation progra m. At the close of the school year the fra ternity awarded a meda l to the freshman writing the best prose selection during the school year. 67

Student Advisory Council this year undertook the sponsorship of the a nnual Homecoming for Peru alumni. The smoothness of the wellplanned routine of the Homecoming festivities warranted praise for those who were responsible for the day 's activities. I t also fell to the Student Advisory Council to direct and plan the a nnual football banquet. The Social Com mittee has as its du ty the direction of the socia l activities of the campus. Their prima ry fun ction concerns the arra ngements for the allcollege dances throughout the year. An importa n t accomplishment of the year was the purchasing of the public address system to fu rnish music for the dances. Specialty dances and floor shows were perhaps responsible fo r the large a ttendance at our college dances this year.

The fa ll seaso n open ed with the H o m ecoming presentation of Post R oad. Probably the outstanding play of the yea r w as Cyrano de B ergerac . The production of Cinderella l>y a n all -girl cast wi th e ffect ive lig hting , costuming, and drapery proved to be o ne o f the most c harming ente rta inme n ts of the yea r. The spring play One ill ad iYiKiil in its wi erd se tting with h a unting noises stimul ated both th rills and laug h s . In conjunction wi th Alpha l'si Omega the Dra m atic Club spo nsor ed both the M. I.);" . K debate a nd dra m a ti c contests. is for yo u to say whether thi s yea rbook under a different staff orga nization has been successful or not. This year rather tha n giving official titl es to each s taff member and restricting him to one phase of yearbook production , the editor and business manager have selec ted helpers who have been called upon for assistance in vari ous phases of the yearbook conception and organiza tion. Behind the staff, Dr. \\"are. the faculty adviser. has always been present to exert a guiding influence a nd a id in avoidi ng or surmoun ting difficulties. In the lat ter part of October the editor and business manager attended the Xational Scholastic Press :\ ssociation Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Here much o f the inspiration and ma ny of the ideas embodied in this book were gleaned. It is the hope of the staff of the 1937 PERCYL-\::\ that in this yearbook we have caught the genera l spirit and at mosphere of the school ... its student body, facul ty, act ivities, and athletics. \Ye trust tha t in the hours of collecting, checking, and writing o f copy, planning page layo uts, organizing sections, mou nt ing p ictures , a nd p roof reading we have not obscured our goal. This year the faculty committ ee has awarded Peruvian Keys to E. Virginia J ohnson a nd J. \\"illiam Burke for their work in the production of this annual. They in t urn wish to express their thanks to the staff members for the assistance lent them .

T HE PEDAGOGJAN during the 1936-3 7 term h as attempted to s erve a need for promotion of fm er school spirit a nd better ca mpus activities. Elaine Shafer, as editor, Charles Parnell , make-up ed itor. and J o hn Heck and ~Or man Littrell as sports editors, worked to accomplish t hi s purpose. Miss Marion Marsh of the English department assUJr.ed h ~ r third year of sponsorship of the Pedagogian. She has taken 0\·er this position w ith a complete knowledge of jo urnalis m and s::hool p ubl icat io ns gained th rough previous experience. The course in newsw riting has been made a requ irement for English majors and minors. Thi s has raised the level of efficiency with wh ich the news is handled. The class is ta ught in a laboratory met hod, and the repo rters have been acquain ted with journalism from both t h e li terary a nd mechan ical angles.
The policy of the paper is to serve as a record of activities a nd t o present them in an unbi ased manner. In add ition to th e regul a r h appenings o f the school, the paper carries two humor col umns . a Dramettes col umn , faculty sketches. and student sketches. lt is issued on \\'ed nesday of each week. In spite of the work involved, the 1936-37 Pedagogian s taff has enjoyed it in the light of th e favorable responses and cooperati o n o f fa c ul ty and students. 96

" (And the faculty got up and s!owly walked away ! ) COLLEGE ST UDEI\TS (A theme as a freshman would write it. ) All youth is divided into two species- college students and non-college students. You can always tell a non-college student- he has some money. College students come to college for a number of reasons, such as : ( 1) they got in to some kind of a s:.:rape at home, ( 2) they are looking for a man ( that is, the skirts are) , (3) they a re too dumb to get a job, ( 4 ) it gives them a cha nce to borrow on their insurance policy. ( They've heard a lot about this from the old man, a nd they 've always wanted to try it.) College students a re usually blondes and brunettes. Once in awhile there a re some who have peculia rly colored hai r. They are called "titians." These '·titia ns" don't look a ny different from the blondes a nd brunettes (anyway, not much ) , but whenever a female " titian " walks by, all the trousered coll ege students sigh a nd say, " Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, a nd oh boy! " College students don 't like to look nice. They ha te being neat. They think a suit is what one takes to court ; breeches is the plural of heart-balm cases; a nd clean socks are what J oe Louis puts out. College students are very adept at the game called " bluffing. " After four yea rs of it on the varsity squad , they are ha nded an honorable discharge ( if they're good), which really mea ns that they can play a good game of cards . .throw a .mean pair of dice, and recognize twenty d •fferent kmds of grass. AIN represents the difference between a farm and a desert . In ancient and in modern times the tillers of the soil have been dependent upon moisture laden clouds to bring the rain which sustains plant life. So, too, does the life of advertising depend upon pictures the universal language, instantly comprehended and appreciated. Quality photo engraving will transmit these pictures with all of the realism of actual life.
