Peru State's Dynamic Duo Lead Teachers and Students Across the State... and Nation Shared interests in history and culture have brought 1997 to 2002. She was President of the Board in 2000 and 2001, and encouraged Holtz to get longtime PSC professors Dr. Dan Holtz and Dr. Sara B. Crook .involved in the organization when her term ended.

Ediger Named Peru State College's 2012 Teacher Excellence Award Winner Peru State College (PSC) Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Dr. Thomas Ediger has been named the institution's 2012 Teacher Excellence Award Winner, marking the third time he has been granted the distinction.

Ediger will be honored during PSC's graduation ceremony at 10 a.rn. Saturday, May 5 in the Al Wheeler Activity Center.

PSC President Dan Hanson said, "It is rare that one individual has so much impact on a campus culture. Long a master of student engagement, Dr. Ediger's tireless efforts were immediately recognized by everyone involved in the decision-making process for this award. Torn, his students and their performances give the campus a sense of heart and soul that is deeply appreciated. He is well-deserving of this honor and I congratulate him on this achievement."

Dr. Thomas Ediger Ediger said, "PeruStateCollegeisfortunatetohavernany first-rate teachers, so it is an honor to be recogni:Zed in this way. The balance of faculty responsibilities among teaching, professional development and service works well for me. I am very grateful to be part of the Peru State faculty."

The Teacher Excellence Award is given annually to one outstanding full-time faculty member at each of the three state colleges, Peru, Wayne and Chadron. To be considered, a faculty member must have a minimum of four years consecutive employment at the college, have taught a minimum of 15 credit hours during the previous academic year, and have an active and positive record of service to students as an academic, professional or personal advisor. Candidates must also have demonstrated involvement in faculty development programs, a superior level of teaching effectiveness and a record of public service.

Recipients of the campus award from each of the colleges are finalists for the Nebraska State College System's George Rebensdorf Teaching Excellence Award.

Ediger joined the Peru State faculty in 1979 where he directs the Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers and teaches courses in music theory, music history, music education and piano. He is an active performer, composer and a popular piano and vocal clinician/adjudicator in the reg!on. His most recent compositions are The Land of Oops, a chamber opera for the Madrigal Singers, and Psalm 121 for choir published by Concordia Press. His piano and composition students have often won state and regional competitions.

Ediger founded Peru State's Piano Extravaganza in 1990, an annual event that brings more than 200 pianists to campus for day-long rehearsals and a final performance where, under his direction, 30 pianists simultaneously play 15 pianos. He coordinates the college's Annual _ High School Show Choir Festival and annual Choral Festival Honor Choir. Ediger is also director and producer of PSC's annual "Holiday Madrigal Dinner," which features the Peru State Madrigal Singers in a fully costumed Renaissance dinner with traditional madrigals, originally composed music, and a variety of musical and theatrical entertainment.

Ediger is currently treasurer of Nebraska Music Teachers Association, having previously served the organization as president. He was honored by the association in 2008 as their Distinguished Teacher of the Year and Service Award Winner.

In March 2009, Dr. Ediger was awarded the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) ;--...__Eoundation Fellow Award in recognition of his service and leadership. He has served as 0:1'.< -MTNA West Central Division and as a member of the Board of Directors.

He is currently on the MTNA Foundation Fund's national development committee.

Ediger earned a Bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Nebraska. He holds a Master's degree in piano performance and a doctorate in theory and composition from the University of Northern Colorado.

Ediger has also completed postgraduate work at Portland State University, Yale University and in Graz, Austria. He holds the permanent national teacher certification in piano and theory through the MTNA.

Travis Dunekacke ('99) of Elk Creek started his own small business, TD Niche Pork, in 2008. Meat is produced and processed in southeast Nebraska. It is marketed to individuals in the Midwest and restaurants in Lincoln, Omaha, and Nebraska City. continues on page 17

The team grade point average includes all varsity student-athletes certified as eligible.

figured solely on the past academic year and was not cumulative.

The Bobcat volleyball team, coached by Lexie Baack, finished with a team gpa of 3.55, good for a · tie for 77th overall, putting them in the fop eight percent of the 934 teams.

Dr. Johann Murray's cross country team completed the academic year with a team gpa of 3.48 tying them at 121st among the teams. This ranked them in the top 13% of all of the 934 teams.

The women's golf team, coached by Angela Tejral Witt finished the year with a 3.17 team gpa while the softball team completed the year with a 3.15 gpa and was coached by Mark Mathews.

The Bobcat football team finished with a team gpa of 3.0 and was coached by Terry Clark.

PSC Athletic Director Steve Schneider was pleased with the number of the scholar-teams honored.

Top Ten Percent of Champions of Character Recently, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released their Champions of Character Scorecard with the 2010-11 results showing how the association and its members are advancing characterdriven intercollegiate athletics. Among the top athletic programs in the NAIA listing was Peru State College (PSC), which tied for 18th out of 220 colleges and universities, which were recognized with the Champions of Character Five Star Award.

PSC President Dr. Dan Hanson was very pleased with the recent announcement. Dr. Hanson said, "The College is very proud of our coaches and student-athletes anµ their strong commitment" to the Champions of Character program." Athletic Director Steve Schneider echoed Dr. Hanson's comments.

Schneider added, "Our coaches and their studentathletes have supported this initiative.

Through their actions, the values of the Champions of Character are being gained by our athletes

and losses - strengthening effective athletic departments and leadership is key to advancing character-driven intercollegiate athletics," said Kristin Gillette, NAIA Director of Champions of Character. "The Scorecard supports and recognizes member institutions and conferences using sport as a vehicle to teach life lessons.

No doubt this is a point of differentiation in college athletics and making a huge impact on our 60,000 student-athletes."

The Scorecard was crafted to convert the NAIA' s vision and strategy into measurable goals and to monitor progress towards Conference (MCAC), Peru advancing character-driven athletics.

Donald Glaesemann ('65) of Richland, Washington passed away on October 28, 2011. He worked for the Social Security Administration for 35 years.

Alma (Freese) Weise ('60) of Omaha passed away on June 30, 2009. She was 96 years old. She taught for many years before retiring in 1978. She was very active as a volunteer and she enjoyed gardening.

Sandra Biere-Jarrett ('62) of Huntington Beach, California passed away on January 13, 2012.

James Kanter ('65) of Lincoln passed away on January 18, 2012. James was instrumental in beginning Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island. He was named Admiral of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska by Governor Nelson in 1992 .

Deborah (Deb) Conn-Mintle ('71) of Glenwood, Iowa passed away on Charles Hinman ('41) of Tulsa, Oklahoma passed away on December 15, 2011. He worked for 34 years with Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, February 3, 2011. Deb worked as an elementary teacher at the Northeast Elementary in Glenwood for 34 years; she retired in May 2005. After retiring, OK and Houston TX, until he retired in 1987.

John Clements ('49) of Englewood, Florida passed ayVay on March 8, 2011. she found out that she needed a liver transplant. She was on the liver transplant Anna (Pfister) Watkins ('47) of Lincoln passed away on December 21, 2011 list for almost 8 years. Although she received a new liver on the date of her death, she did not survive the surgery.

Remembering Peru State Consider Becoming "I'd never really thought about including Peru State in my will. Not until the topic came up at the . National Alumni Association Board meeting last Homecoming.~' C. Carlos Harrison, Shenandoah, Iowa, a 1951 PSC graduate and true-blue Bobcat, recently shared his plans for the creation of the Harrison Alumni Fund as part of his estate plans. Carlos hopes his bequest will help fund an alumni house or alumni programming by the PSC Foundation.

"I've visited a number of other campuses," Carlos explained, "and many have facilities and programs designed for alumni. I'd love to see that kind of opportunity at Peru State."

Carlos's fond memories of Peru State College ·began his first day on campus in 1949. Carlos majored in education and spent many hours in the music department with Dr. Edith Greer and Mr. Darryl Manring.

"They were great mentors," Carlos shared, "They were the type of professors who students were comfortable approaching with a problem and C. Carlos Harrison would do their best to give solid advice."

Carlos's favorite memory from his collegiate days was a band trip to Chadron for a football game. The Chadron students painted the bus red . and the next morning the students had to buy gasoline to scrub the paint off!

After graduating from Peru, Carlos received his Masters in Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In the mid-1950s ... after a hitch in the United States Army ... Carlos was back in Shenandoah as District Scout Executive with the Boy Scouts of America.

While there, he was offered a position with Air Products and Chemicals Inc. Carlos accepted the position and was quickly moved to California where he spent the next 39 years in the airline industry.

Carlos maintained his close ties with Peru State through the Northern California Alumni Club. On two different occasions he served as President of the "NorCal" group.

He retired in 2000 from United Airlines and returned to Shenandoah to be near family and friends.

Carlos's gift to Peru State is in the form of a bequest ... a simple addition to his will. The Harrison Alumni Fund details were worked out through a separate agreement with the Peru State College Foundation.

According to Carlos, the whole process was very easy. "I met with my attorney and had the appropriate language added to my will. Then Todd and I worked out the plan for the Alumni Fund over a couple of emails and telephone calls." (R. Todd Simpson, CFRE, is the Executive Director of the Peru State College Foundation.)

Carlos's gift plan is a great way to remember Peru State ... and strengthen the College for the future! Thank you Carlos!

These alumni and friends have made wonderfully thoughtful commitments to the College and their recognition as members of the 1867 Society encourages others to consider similar gift planning.

Including Peru State in one's estate plan is testimony that the College has been particularly appreciated by the donor and that he/she wants to help perpetuate the College's good health and its service to future generations of students.

National Alumni Association Board Members Carlos Harrison ('51), Mike Guilliatt ('67), Paul Fell ('67), Kim Vrtiska ('90), Al Urwin ('82), and Dan Cotton ('76) help serve chili and cinnamon rolls at the 4th annual chili feed.

After an hour of visiting, nearly eighty alumni and friends listen to President Hanson provide a 15 minute Peru State College update at the Omaha Meet and Greet.

Brett Richards ('92) has been selected as the next super­ intendent for the South Sarpy School District.

Victoria (McKinley) Garcia ('90) and her 9 year old daughter, Calli Jo (Editor in Chief), have created a free on­ line magazine, sponsored and printed by Gluten Intolerant Group (GIG) of North America. It is designed by kids, for kids and about kids living a gluten free diet because of celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Th� Garcia Family has lived the gluten-free lifestyle since 2004 when four of the children • were diagnosed with the active disease and one with the gene (which means the disease could kick in at any time and cause serious damage to the child's body). Victoria earned her MEd/Curriculum & Instruction in 2008. Victoria volun­ teers as a life coach and has also presented "Celiac Disease in the Classroom" to school staff to help them understand how to work within the student's needs. Victoria is current­ ly working on a unique sister website to the magazine.

2000s Nicole Rist ('09) of Humboldt is the new Lion Tamer for the Humboldt Lions Club.

Crystal (Ellis) Dunekacke ('07) graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a Master of Public Administration degree on May 6, 2011.

Kathy (Neuman) McKillip ('08) has been named direc­ tor of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development's Travel and Tourism Division.

Chris Waddle ('00) was appointed the new human re­ sources executive director of Central Community College.

Seth Stewart ('07) is volunteering in Bulgaria as part of the Peace Corps. He is an English teacher for the native students·.

Wendy Brennan ('06) will receive the AATG Outstand­ ing German Educator Award. Wendy is a German teacher in the Millard Public Schools in Omaha. Winners of this prestigious award also receive a travel grant that supports travel to Germany in 2012.

Delta Fajardo-Norton ('03) obtained her Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 2006. Also in 2006, she established an amateur photography business called DS Design Photography for portraits and special occasions. She is in her 9th year as English teacher and Head Debate coach for Hastings High School. Her team has gone to Nationals 3 times, once with an undefeated team in the state qualifying rounds. Delta has also been involved in Hastings' com­ munity theater. This year she is the school's sponsor for LISTEN (Let's Inspire Solidarity, Tolerance, and Equality in Nebraska).

Friends of the College Dan Holtz, professor of English at PSC, has been elected president of Nebraska Historical Society Board.

Homecoming Tailgate

to be Annual Event More than 1,300 students, staff, alumni and community members converged on the Campus of a Thousand Oaks in September to celebrate the college's 91st Homecoming and second annual tailgate on the quad.

A carnival-style atmosphere and beautiful weather greeted our guests, as did a campus green teeming with free food and games. The air was rich with the smell of grilled burgers, chili dogs, popcorn, snow cones, caramel apples and cotton candy. The food was a good match for the variety of activities in . front of TJ majors, including a bounce house, dual-lane slide, obstacle course, bungee run, nine-hole miniature golf, Velcro wall, inflatable boxing, caricatures by renowned cartoonist and PSC alum Paul Fell, face painting, balloon animals and more. Peru State gear was liberally given away as prizes and the Hoyt Street Jazz Band provided lively music on the front steps of Jindra.

President Hanson said, "The Homecoming Tailgate is an opportunity for us to celebrate the beginning of another successful year and to thank our alumni, friends and surrounding communities for their unwavering support of the institution and our students. The feedback we have gotten about the event is so positive that we plan to make it an annual tradition. I personally invite you to bring your family to campus, meet our students and staff, and have some fun!"

This year's Homecoming celebration has been set for Saturday, Sept. 29.

Janet Vaher ('10) and Trent Grooms ('13) were married on September 10, 2011.

HUlary White and David Dorzweiler ('07) were married on October 8, 2011. White is a CPA at Cherry, Bekaert and Holland, LLP. Dorzweiler is a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps at Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Kari Blahauvietz and Jeff Weerts ('03) were married on July 16, 2011.

Anne Gerdes ('07) and Dustin Richardson were married on November 12, 2011. Anne is currently employed at Auburn State Bank. Dustin is currently employed by the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

Sarah Smulling and Travis Martensen ('00) are going to be married in June 2012. Sarah is a nurse at Midlands Hospital Ale gent Health. Travis is a senior software engineer for Aviture.

Abie Liebig ('07) married Terry Wulf ('09) on May 21, 2011. Abie is a fourth grade teacher at Shelby Public Schools. Terry is a sixth grade social studies teacher at Columbus Middle School.

Mollie Springer married Curtis Thompson ('11) on November 19, 2011.

Mollie is currently a substitute teacher in the Norfolk area. Curtis is employed by Christensen Brozek Faltys as a staff accountant.

Lauren Fiori ('11) married Jonathan Sanley ('11) on December 10, 2011.

Both completed their student teaching in the fall.

Delta Fajardo ('03) married Michael Norton on June 11, 2011. The couple resides in Hastings.

Brennan Receives McKillip Named New Nebraska Outstanding German Tourism Director Ed UCato r Awa rd On November 19, Wendy Brennan ('06) received the American Association of Teachers of German's (AATG) Outstanding German Educator Award, K-8 Level. The award was presented during the Association's Annual Meeting in Denver, attended by approximately 400 AATG members.

This prestigious award is given annually in recognition of personal innovation, talent, and leadership, which reflect uncommon excellence. • Recipients are nominated by their colleagues in recognition of service to the language teaching profession; participation in professional organizations; contribution to German language education; and continued growth as a German educator.

Outstanding German Educator award winners also receive the Friedrich Gerstacker Travel Grant, sponsored by the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation in Berlin, Germany. The grant supports travel to Germany in 2012.

A German teacher at Millard North Middle School in Omaha, Nebraska, Brennan earned a master of science in education with an emphasis in curriculum and instr_uction from Peru State College. She is also the current president of the Nebraska Association of Teachers of German.

Kathy McKillip (M.S. 2008) of Lincoln has been named director of the Nebraska Department of Economic Development's Travel and Tourism Division.

McKillip will oversee the division's activities, including the marketing of Nebraska attractions and events, developing and managing a budget of state and federal revenue sources, preparing legislation related to tourism, providing a cohesive approach to the division's vision and participating in strategic policy planning.

A fifth-generation Nebraskan, McKillip, earned a master's in science organizational management with an economic emphasis from Peru State College. She graduated from high school in Nebraska City, and also holds a bachelor's degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
