THE ELEMENTARY COURSE

is designed to prepare teachers fo r commo n ungraded a nd lower grade sch ools; a nd h en ce, in additio n to a critical study of all the co mm ~ n branches, it co mpri ses a th o ro ug h course of in struction 111 the organization a nd management of un graded schools, methods of teaching th e diffe r e nt branches, th e a rt of r enderin g th e elements of learnin g inte resting and attractive to the yo ung, and the use of illustrative apparatu s fo r primary schools. N ebraska S tate N onnal S clwol. course, it comprises a three years' course in the higher b ran ches, including professional instruction in the laws of me n tal developm e n t, with their application to teaching; the science, philosophy, and history of education ; school _laws in general, and the school system o f N ebraska in particular ; and school gradation, s uperv ision, a nd management.

English, lassical, J\ilythological Geographical, B iographical, Mathem atical and R e ligious; C) clopedias o f Art, Science, E d ucation, and G e n eral in fo r mation· and a weJl.selected circulating library of about twelv e hun d red vol umes, free to all the students.

At the beginning of the Fall T erm , classes composed of p ractical teachers, a nd others having the req uisite age, scholarshi p, and exper ience, will be formed with a view to graduation in the Elem e n tary Course, at the end of the year. Students found com peten t to en te r these classes, will, in connection . with their professio na l in str uction a nd training, obtain complete outline -reviews of all the b ra nches o f the E lementary Course. T hese will all be close classes, hence all that w ish to enter them should be present at the opening of the fall ter m .

For illustratio n m the natura l sciences ther e is a 0<rood collection of . m merals an d fossi ls, together with a bar owin<r zoolo<rical cabinet. The • . b 0 geologtca l cabm et e m braces n early a ll tl1e characteristic fossils of the u pper carbonife r ous period that a r e found in Tebraska. The zoo logical cabinet com prises at present a small collection of native birds a n d a few other a nimal forms. Botan ical a n d e n tomological cabinets have been beaun and tl1e I n stitution h a s appr opriate appa rat us fo r illustration in ~1at~ral phylosoph y and c h e m istry.

Students are taught vocal music and gymnasti cs as a par t of th e regular course. Instruction is given on the piano or organ at th e usual prices.

There are two well-cond ucted literary societies-the P hilomathean and the Everett-which meet reg ularly every Friday evening .

The reading-room of the Institution, which is furnished with th e leading papers and periodicals of the cou ntry, is free to a ll th e studen ts.
