Dennis works on Brownville Historical Society Archival Project
Dennis works on Brownville Historical Society Archival Project JAN 24, 2020
Brownville, Nebraska- Bailey Dennis worked last summer on an archival project and as a docent for the Brownville Historical Society . In June she began working at Brownville’s Railroad Museum, but by the end of the summer she would and would have the opportunity to work at all of the Historical Society’s museums. Dennis received the job after a recommendation from Dr. Kathy Nehls, professor of history at Peru State, who had started as a board member of the historical society in the spring. Nehls is working to establish a partnership between the Brownville Historical Society and the College. She hopes it will eventually lead to more opportunities for student internships and paid docent positions. Dennis adds, “With my past experience visiting the Nebraska State Historical Society, I understand there is a proper procedure for handling antique documents so I was ready to learn more about what exactly an archivist does…” “Dr. Nehls and I worked together on identifying, collecting and organizing the archival materials. This is still an ongoing project that will help people visiting the Historical Society to do research for projects or genealogy. The project also hopes to digitize archival material for online access.” In addition to Dennis’ work with the archive, she also worked as a docent. Dennis said, “I loved being a museum docent and speaking to community members – and people from all around the United States.” “I would give tours to visitors and tell the story of Brownville and Nebraska history. It was wonderful. Working for the Historical Society was my first job at a museum and it was a great first experience.” “Working with Dr. Nehls on this project and as a museum docent opened my eyes to want I wanted to do in the future. I would love to work in a museum.” BHS Board President Steve Woerth said, “I have nothing but praises for work and energy.” Bailey Dennis is from Omaha Nebraska, and graduated in December. She intends to continue assisting the archival project and plans to pursue a master’s degree in public history. ###

Peru State Students Attend Phi Beta Lambda Conference in New York
Peru State Students Attend Phi Beta Lambda Conference in New York JAN 24, 2020
New York, New York - Five students from Peru State's Phi Beta Lambda chapter visited New York last October to attend the PBL Career Connections Conference. According to fbla-pbl.org, "TheCareer Connections Conference is a fast paced, high impact program focused on connecting talented individuals with leading employers." "This is not your average meet-and-greet, the event teaches students necessary skills to succeed in a challenging job market interviewing techniques, personal brand building, and early career navigation. Participants also received a comprehensive resume review and a free professional head shot for use in their social profiles." PBL's website continues, "In addition to workshops, students also had face time with hiring managers from PBL Partners, American Express, Dow Jones, OBM, Hyatt, IHeartMedia, Marriott, NYU, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Weework." The students who attended were Ashli Becker (Yankton, SD), Nancy Ramirez (Tecumseh, NE), Velma Hauck (Fremont, NE), Rozlyn Cole (Wymore, NE), and Stacy Bohlken (Palmer, NE). They were joined by their faculty advisor, Dr. Sheri Grotrian, professor of business at Peru State. Grotrian spoke positively about the event, "This was Peru State’s first chance to have students attend the Career Connections Conference and, from my perspective, it provides an impressive teaching opportunity based upon the content that is offered as part of the conference." "Additionally, students are fortunate to interact with others from across the country as well as network with some extremely impressive business professionals in New York City. Providing these engaging experiences to students is what helps to prepare them for their future career. From Left to Right, Ashli Becker, Nancy Ramirez, Rozlyn Cole, Velma Hauck and Stacy Bohlken Along with attending the conference, the students also saw Wicked on Broadway, using funds awarded to Phi Beta Lambda by the Snyder Cultural Understanding Foundation. Supported by generous donations made by and in honor of Dr. William Snyder, the Snyder Cultural Understanding Endowed Fund provides financial support for experiential learning consisting of cultural expansion, increased societal understanding and a broadening of the Peru State College student's personal growth. The proposed learning experience may take the form of a day trip to a major metropolitan area for exposure to cultural alternatives, the arts, or large group events, or may involve bringing such an experience to the campus of Peru State College. Phi Beta Lambda meets every second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. in TJ Majors Room 326. If you are interested in learning more about PBL, contact Dr. Sheri Grotrian at sgrotrian@peru.edu. ### Quentin Victor contributed to this release.

Red Cross and Peru State hosts blood drive on February 11
Red Cross and Peru State hosts blood drive on February 11 JAN 31, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Feb 7, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429 Peru, Nebraska - The American Red Cross will host a blood drive on the Peru State Campus on Tuesday, February 11. The drive will be held in the Live Oak Room at the Student Center and run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. When you give blood, you help cancer patients, trauma patients, sickle cell patients, burn patients and patients with chronic diseases. There are two types of blood donations you can give at the drive, whole blood and power red. According to their website at RedCrossBlood.org, "Whole blood is the most flexible type of donation. It can be transfused in its original form, or used to help multiple people when separated into its specific components of red cells, plasma and platelets." "During a Power Red donation, you give a concentrated dose of red cells, the part of your blood used every day for those needing transfusions as part of their care. This type of donation uses an automated process that separates your red blood cells from the other blood components, and then safely and comfortably returns your plasma and platelets to you." The Red Cross is currently going through a blood shortage, and needs donations, particularly Type O blood. According to their website, "The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime." To schedule an appointment to give, visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter PSC to schedule an appointment. Walk-in appointments will also be accepted. ### Quentin Victor contributed to this release.

Largest Gift in College History will be devoted to Scholarships
Largest Gift in College History will be devoted to Scholarships FEB 3, 2020
A generous heart, a caring friend, and a grateful alumnus have provided the key ingredients resulting in Peru State’s single largest gift ever received: $2,100,000, from the estate of Norma Jeanne Fensler. The gift will be devoted to scholarships. College President Dan Hanson commented, “The number one need facing students today is financial support to begin college, and financial support to help them stay in school through graduation. This contribution will be life-changing for many students.” The story of this life-changing gift began with Norma Jeanne Fensler, known to her friends as Jeanne. She was born in Kokomo, Indiana and later married her beloved husband Edward Leon Fensler on September 6, 1947 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. While natives of the Midwest, eventually they made their way west and spent much of their adult lives in California.
Norma Jeanne Fensler Pam and Fred Robertson (’73) were also Midwestern transplants to California. Pam met Jeanne shortly after Edward’s death in the late 1980s when Pam assisted Jeanne as her realtor buying and selling two homes. Through this process, Pam Robertson became a close friend and confidant. Pam played a pivotal role in Jeanne’s later years helping her with all manner of daily challenges as Jeanne aged and struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. Several years before the onset of Alzheimer’s, Pam orchestrated a meeting with an attorney to set up a Living Trust to determine what would happen with Jeanne’s estate as she had no living children or relatives. At that time, Jeanne asked Pam to direct the proceeds of her estate to a cause Pam felt was worthy. Knowing that higher education brings greater opportunity in today’s society, and being very familiar with the good work being done by the Peru State College Foundation through her husband and having served as a former Board Co-Director of the Foundation herself, Pam directed the proceeds of Jeanne’s estate to create the Norma Jeanne Fensler Memorial Scholarship at Peru State College. From left to right: Fred Robertson ('73), Pam Robertson, President Dan Hanson, Becca Jewell Pam said, “Fred and I both come from rural areas in Indiana and Iowa and know how hard it is for kids from those areas to be able to afford a college education. Our hope is that this will help those in need, especially those from the four-state region around Peru, to attend college and ultimately better their lives with a degree.” Fred Robertson’s gratitude for his Peru State College education persists to this day. He proudly wears his Peru State College ring and speaks highly of the professors who made an impact on him. “The professors who invested in me as a student changed my life,” said Fred. “Professors like Lyle McKercher, Daryl Long, Al Brady, John Christ, and many others were experts in their fields. They taught me so much, but I also know that they cared about me as a person. That was very motivating for me as a student.” Pam’s intent for the Norma Jeanne Fensler Memorial Scholarship is to allow students who would not otherwise be able to attend college the opportunity to attend Peru State and seek a degree. Pam also intends this scholarship to memorialize the kindness and generosity of her dear friend Jeanne. Pam said, “Jeanne always wished she could have had children but was never blessed with any. Making this gift to the college is a way for her to help children she never had herself. “ The Norma Jeanne Fensler Memorial Scholarship will provide more than $80,000 in scholarships each year. Scholarship awards will start at $2,000 per year and will be awarded to full-time first-year students who have financial need. The Fensler Scholarships are renewable for students who remain in good academic standing. The first Fensler Scholarships will be available in January 2021.

Hanson noted, “Every year, we have students who sit out a semester or maybe a full year to work. Sometimes they have to support their families because the family income is very low or unstable. All of these students have a goal and a dream to earn a college education. The Fensler Scholarship will help students every year who face this type of economic challenge.” Interim Foundation CEO Rebecca Jewell stated, “The Norma Jeanne Fensler Memorial Scholarship increases the Foundation’s annual scholarship awarding capacity by more than one-third, to nearly $400,000 per year. This gift will allow the Foundation to have an even greater impact in meeting the financial needs of Peru State students.” Dan Hanson noted, “Pam and Fred Robertson were the catalyst that brought this incredible gift to Peru State College. Pam’s devoted friendship and Fred’s lifelong gratitude for his Peru State College education will be celebrated and commended as the conduits for this transformational gift.”

Advocate and #WhyIStayed creator, Beverly Gooden, to speak at Peru State
Advocate and #WhyIStayed creator, Beverly Gooden, to speak at Peru State FEB 4, 2020 Beverly Gooden
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 4, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing Communications, 402-872-2429 Peru, Nebraska - Victims' rights advocate and creator of the viral hashtag, #WhyIStayed, Beverly Gooden will visit Peru State College as part of the campus's Distinguished Speaker Series. Gooden will speak on March 2 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Beverly Gooden breaks down the myths and misunderstandings around domestic violence to illuminate the complex reasons why victims stay in abusive relationships and what you can do to help. Recently the “me too” movement has shown us what our society considers acceptable can be changed by the work of many individuals coming together to speak with a unified voice. About Beverly Gooden Known for creating the viral Twitter hashtag #WhyIStayed in the wake of several high-profile domestic violence incidents, Beverly sparked a national conversation about how society views victims, while calling for a community response to this important social issue. Drawing on her own gripping tale of overcoming an abusive relationship, Beverly provides you with a personal account of how it feels to live in fear and why it’s so difficult for individuals to leave those who exert physical and emotional control over them. On stage, Beverly lays the groundwork for critical conversation about the dynamics of abusive relationships, while revealing ways that you can help, including the important questions to ask those who you suspect are being abused. With unguarded honesty and palpable passion for changing lives for the better, she empowers audiences to expose their own stories and discover their role in ending domestic violence. Why I Stayed: The Complexity of Domestic Violence "Why I Stayed" is a revolutionary speech by Beverly Gooden, renown social activist and creator of the #WhyIStayed hashtag and global movement. In this radical talk, Gooden challenges the question “Why did he/she stay?” and reveals how the current way we interact with survivors is a house of cards. From faulty blame attribution, to designating only men as abusers, it’s easy to overlook the sheer volume of domestic violence when the issue has historically been framed as “them” and not “us”. That’s why, as Beverly argues, domestic violence is a community issue. Victims of violence can be women and men, LGBTQ and heterosexual, or even children. Victims of violence may have fought back, or remained silent. There is no perfect victim and no specific type of abuser. Beverly discusses her personal domestic violence story, reveals the most important questions to ask victims, and outlines how we all can help. About the Distinguished Speaker Series Peru State established the Distinguished Speaker Series in 2010 as part of a commitment to student engagement and success. The intent of the Series is to bring diverse, nationally and internationally recognized speakers to southeast Nebraska to enrich the educational experience of students while also providing regional communities more opportunities to engage in interesting and relevant topics. ###

Rotaract aids in efforts to conserve water
Rotaract aids in efforts to conserve water FEB 7, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Feb 7, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429 Peru, Nebraska - Peru State College Rotaract is asking students, faculty and staff to conserve water on campus and in the community. Following the historic floods in the spring of 2019, the City of Peru and Peru State College are working with residents and students to encourage voluntary water conservation. After trucking in water from Auburn for a number of months, the City of Peru was able to install a temporary water treatment plant. The temporary installation has an upper limit on its water treatment abilities that irresponsible water use could potentially strain. In response to the ongoing conservation efforts, Peru State Rotaract is asking for volunteers to pledge to conserve water this semester and in the future. Past efforts on campus to conserve water have been impressive and Rotaract hopes this drive will continue that effort. Some of the ways you can help the effort: Don’t use the toilet as a trashcan: every time you flush the toilet for a piece of toilet paper or trash, you use 4.5 gallons of water. Don’t run the shower before you get in. Spend less time in the shower. The average shower uses around 2 gallons per minute. Don’t leave the water on when you brush your teeth. The purpose of Rotaract is to provide an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service. Rotaract has more than 10,000 clubs worldwide and is sponsored by Rotary International. ### Thomas Veleba contributed to this release.

Peru, Nebraska – The Peru State College Art Gallery is hosting a new art show, “The Reason I’m Here.” The featured work was created by guest artist Loren Entz and will be on display until February 28. The Peru State Gallery’s hours are 8:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. According to Entz’s biography, “Whereas many Western artists focus on the more adventurous aspects of the historical West and modern ranch life, Entz paints the quieter, more domestic side of rural life. He searches for the connections between the shared experiences of Anglos and Native Americans in the West. His paintings of Native American life often focus on more domestic subjects and scenes the work that must be done, the events that closely tie family members together.” “Entz’s paintings reveal the deep human emotions that unite, rather than divide, the many cultures that make up the past and the present worlds of the West.” Loren Entz grew up in Kansas, where he frequently visited the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO. He worked as a ranch hand in Montana, as a teenager he nurtured his artistic talent through course work at the Famous Artists Correspondence School, and through his studies with two masters of representational painting, Bettina Steinke and Richard Schmid. Peru State’s Koelzer heads to Unicameral FEB 24, 2020 Jared Koelzer
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 24, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429
Lincoln, Nebraska – Jared Koelzer, senior student at Peru State, is working at the Nebraska State Capitol this spring as an intern for Senator Julie Slama of District 1. Koelzer’s internship is paid under the new Senator Floyd and Doris Wagner Vrtiska Nebraska Unicameral Internship. Koelzer said, “Getting the opportunity to work at the Unicameral is an amazing experience that gives me the ability to learn in ways that I could never experience in a classroom.” “Working with Senator Slama has made the experience even better, as her commitment to this college and community is incredible. She truly understands the needs of District 1 and works hard to create and support legislation that benefits as many of her constituents as possible.” Koelzer comes from Corning, Kansas and is a graduate of Central High School. He is a senior majoring in history with a minor in political science. He plans to graduate in May of 2021. Peru State College has offered a paid internship at the State Capitol each legislative session since 2003, with funds provided through a campus work-study program. However, the increases in minimum wage and the demands on the work study program threatened the unicameral internship funding. Former State Senator Floyd Vrtiska stepped forward with a contribution to endow the internship and provide a permanent source of funding for students from Peru State who are seeking experience at the state government level. Dr. Sara Crook, Professor of History and Political Science, oversees the Unicameral internship program. “The Capitol internship program is important for students who gain valuable first-hand experience in Nebraska’s Unicameral.” “It is also valuable for Peru State College to have visibility at the capitol building during the legislative session as an institution supported by state funding. It is a win-win for the College and for the students who gain this unique experience.” Students apply for the Vrtiska Nebraska Unicameral Internship through the social sciences faculty. Koelzer added, “I am incredibly grateful to the family of Floyd Vrtiska for creating this scholarship for students to gain important experience through hands-on work, such as policy research, press release and speech writing, and live session and hearings.” “Through this internship, I hope to expand my knowledge of the political process and gain first-hand experience that will help me as I pursue my plans of working in government and serving as a civil servant in the future.” Floyd Vrtiska served in the Nebraska Unicameral as the representative of District 1 from 1992-2004. As a state senator, he was a strong advocate for Peru State College. He secured funding for an expansion of Hoyt Science Building and he served on the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees and the Peru State College Foundation Board of Directors. Vrtiska was also very active on numerous other local, county and state boards. The Senator Floyd and Doris Wagner Vrtiska Nebraska Unicameral Internship is administered by the Peru State College Foundation. The Peru State College Foundation manages approximately 140 endowed and non-endowed funds that provide scholarships and other support to Peru State College students, faculty and staff. ### Quentin Victor contributed to this release.

Advocate and #WhyIStayed creator, Beverly Gooden, visits Peru State College
Advocate and #WhyIStayed creator, Beverly Gooden, visits Peru State College MAR 15, 2020 Beverly Gooden
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 15, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing Communications, 402-872-2429 Peru, Nebraska - Victims' rights advocate and creator of the viral hashtag, #WhyIStayed, Beverly Gooden visited Peru State College as part of the campus's Distinguished Speaker Series on March 2. Beverly Gooden's presentation broke down the myths and misunderstandings around domestic violence to illuminate the complex reasons why victims stay in abusive relationships and what you can do to help. Recently the “me too” movement has shown us what our society considers acceptable can be changed by the work of many individuals coming together to speak with a unified voice. Gooden spoke intently on the nature of victim blaming, and how it comes from a concept of escapism. She said, "I hear people say all the time, it couldn't happen to me. What happened to you would never happen to me. I would never be abused, I would never be in an abusive relationship. I'm too strong, I would never find myself in that situation. People say that to me all the time, to my face... It's a belief, they really truly believe it cannot happen to me." Another component to victim blaming was the idea of a "just world." She said, "If something bad happened to you, you brought it on yourself, you did something to deserve it. You wore something to invite it. It's that line of thinking that bad things don't happen to good people, and a lot of people actually believe that. We know that the world is not always just. I believe we can make the world just." Gooden expressed her belief that it was integral to change the discussion from victim blaming to revolving around supporting victims of domestic violence and helping them escape their abusive circumstances. Known for creating the viral Twitter hashtag #WhyIStayed in the wake of several high-profile domestic violence incidents, Beverly sparked a national conversation about how society views victims, while calling for a community response to this important social issue.

Chadron State, Peru State and Wayne State Colleges will provide residence hall rooms for individuals who need to quarantine, isolate, or convalesce during the COVID-19 pandemic if called upon by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). “As a community partner for rural Nebraska and the state as a whole, we believe it is important to offer our colleges’ resources to serve the people of Nebraska during this public health crisis,” said Paul Turman, Chancellor of the Nebraska State College System. Alpha Chi chapter receives research project prize APR 20, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 20, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429
Peru, Nebraska – A Peru State College collaborative research project received second place and a $2500 cash prize at the 2020 national convention for Alpha Chi. Alpha Chi is a national honor society for juniors, seniors and graduate students from all academic backgrounds whose GPAs rank in the top ten percent of their school. Three Peru State students – Dylan George (Beatrice, Neb.), Kaylee Gill (Allen, Neb.) and Sara Vance (Shenandoah, Iowa) – and Dr. Kate Trout, assistant professor of biology and human health, participated in the convention, which took place virtually this year. The event, which was scheduled to take place March 19-21 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was cancelled a week prior due to precaution against the spread of COVID-19, and was held virtually instead. “The Alpha Chi National Office worked diligently to make an all virtual convention for the students, which was a testament to their dedication,” Trout said. The Peru State group submitted a video presentation on their project, “Interdisciplinary factors that may support the spread of misinformation in the era of social media: building an interdisciplinary, multi-dimensional model,” which related to the 2020 conference theme of Cultures of Conspiracies. Each person on the team represented a different academic discipline for the presentation — George, Science and Epidemiology; Gill, Education and Art; Vance, Social Science and Education; and Trout represented Systems Modeling and Biostatistics. According to Trout, the team’s success was due to the hard work of the students during the initial stages of the project and throughout the past eight months. Trout said, “I wanted to thank and recognize Dylan, Sara, and Kaylee for their hard work and persistence to complete this creative research project through floods, working across campus, senior exams, and a pandemic.” “They should be proud of not only completing this work, but also of their accomplishment of competing with the brightest students across the nation!”

State Colleges to Release CARES Act Student Need Application
State Colleges to Release CARES Act Student Need Application APR 23, 2020
For Immediate Release: April 23, 2020 Contact: Judi Yorges, Director of External Relations and Communications, 402.471.2505 LINCOLN – Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges are finalizing their certifications required by the U.S. Department of Education to receive CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act funding dedicated to providing aid to students. Colleges will then send out CARES Act applications to eligible students over the next week. College students were among the first impacted by the efforts to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Students were asked to transition to virtual learning and not return to campus, which has caused additional financial hardships for students and their families. “Our students have risen to the challenges presented by COVID-19 to continue their educations, but it has not been without significant hardship,” said Paul Turman, Chancellor of the Nebraska State College System. “Through the CARES Act application, students will be able to describe how they have been impacted so that we can strategically direct aid dollars to support our students in continuing their education and completing their degrees.” Under the CARES Act, the Education Stabilization Fund provides approximately $4.4 million in fiscal support to the State Colleges. At least 50 percent of the institutional funds must go directly to emergency financial aid or grants to students to cover basic needs such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child care. Colleges will draw upon survey or data collected through the application to determine how to allocate funds directly to students demonstrating the most significant need. As Nebraska’s open-access public institutions, the State Colleges have been committed to ensuring affordable options for students pursuing a 4-year degree. The CARES Act funds, along with the average $5,200 in grant and aid awarded to existing undergraduate students, can make a significant impact on covering the annual price of tuition at approximately $5,500. ###

Peru, Nebraska — Peru State College associate professor of education, Dr. Darolyn Seay, was named the College’s 2020 Teaching Excellence Award winner. Seay shares her motivation for teaching, saying, “If I can help contribute even in the smallest amount by encouraging happiness and quality of life, then maybe this will create some type of domino effect with the bigger picture impacting even more people further down the road. Success happens when somebody believes you can accomplish great things, I want to be that person that believes in my students and helps them reach that full-blown potential.” Seay believes in supporting students both inside and outside of the classroom. She states, “In order to successfully serve my students in an advisory role, I must be available to offer support in and out of the classroom. My background in guidance and counseling has shaped who I am as an educator, advisor, and mentor who is continuously working with students to help problem solve, strengthen confidence and promote self-efficacy.” “I want my students to know that they are valuable, and have much to offer. Most importantly, I want them to know that nothing should be out of reach if they work hard enough.” Seay advises 2020 graduates, “Surround yourself with people that believe in you and that provide constant support. Continue to accept opportunities that come your way and never second-guess your potential and self-worth.” Seay concludes, “Allow yourself time to become familiar with your new career; this familiarity and confidence will not happen overnight. Be patient, success will be the result of your persistence and hard work.” Seay joined the Peru State College faculty in 2008. She teaches courses in educational psychology, teacher education- principles and practices, and teaching science in the elementary & middle schools. Seay serves as the higher education representative for the state of Nebraska Professional Practices Board, a position appointed by the governor. The board reviews and acts on decisions regarding revocation or suspension of teacher license in the state. Other activities include advising undergraduate students and serving as vice president for the Project Response Organization. Seay received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Master’s degree in Education – Guidance and Counseling from the University of Central Oklahoma, and her Doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching from Northcentral University. ###

Phi Beta Lambda Wins 57 Awards at Virtual National Competition
Phi Beta Lambda Wins 57 Awards at Virtual National Competition APR 24, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 20, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429 Peru, Nebraska – Peru State College had 24 students compete in the virtual 2020-2021 Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) State Leadership Conference. Peru State’s PBL chapter earned 57 top-eight awards including nine first place finishes this year and four chapter awards. This year the competition was carried out remotely due to the current global health crisis. Dr. Sheri Grotrian, professor of business and Peru State’s PBL advisor, writes, “This year, due to the pandemic, Nebraska Phi Beta Lambda needed to be innovative in taking their annual state leadership competition online via Zoom.” “From the advisor perspective, we all felt it was important to try and get the event to still be held one way or the other for the students’ sake. In my communication with our group of students, I explained to treat this as they would any other competition, and in fact, this was going to be a test-run at some experiences they may encounter in their futures when working with organizations that have locations across the globe—and technology is how people continue to be brought together." “In the end, it was a valuable experience, and I believe students were grateful for the opportunity to still compete. I loved seeing firsthand how the students persevered in this time of uncertainty and once again performed at a high level against students from across the state.” The top two, in production or performance events, or three, in objective tests, places in each event are automatically eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, in late June. Students can compete in only two events at nationals, and since Peru State has several students who have automatically qualified, other students may move up in the standings as participants decide which events they will enter. Chapter Awards The Peru State College PBL chapter was again recognized with a Gold Level Excellence Award. Gold Level Excellence is the highest level possible and shows that the chapter contributed to regional and national conferences, PBL public relations, community service, and fundraising. Peru State was similarly recognized in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Fauver’s discovery was featured in the Omaha World Herald in January last year. Fauver went on to be a postdoctoral researcher with the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis where he researched onchocerciasis and lymphatic filaraisis, diseases that are spread by blood-feeding insects. Fauver looked at ways to improve disease surveillance strategies through studying mosquitos in field trials. In the lab, Fauver studied the genomes of filarial worms, a type of roundworm known to cause lymphatic filariasis. As a postdoctoral researcher at Yale, Fauver’s focus is on incorporating genomics into surveillance systems for diseases spread by blood-feeding insects and tracking travelers in the Caribbean to trace outbreaks of these diseases. Bartlett appointed vice president of Barbershop Harmony Society Central States District
Bartlett appointed vice president of Barbershop Harmony Society Central States District MAY 6, 2020 Dr. Jacob Bartlett
Peru, Nebraska - Dr. Jake Bartlett is appointed Central States District vice president of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Bartlett serves on the Central States District Board of Directors and House of Delegates. The Central States District is one of 16 United States districts in the Barbershop Harmony Society. It includes Missouri, Iowa and parts of South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas. Bartlett is the chapter delegate for the Antelope Valley Chapter out of Lincoln. He also represents the 12 chapters and choruses in Nebraska as the state delegate at all national and regional events. Additionally, Bartlett was selected for the international faculty of Harmony University, although the event is canceled this year. This would have been Bartlett’s second year in this competitive position. At Harmony University, Bartlett teaches voice lessons, Vocal Techniques Class, Rhythm Reading for Beginners, Music Theory 1, Music Theory 2, and Simply Speaking Simply – a course designed to train the voice to sing by speaking. The organization holds competitions in which Bartlett has also been a participant. He has competed with several collegiate and districtlevel quartets. In 2017, his quartet “Just Maybe” won the Novice Quartet Championship. Competitions are also canceled this year. This year would have been the first competition including women at the international level with the organization’s strategic vision launched in 2017 to become more inclusive and diverse. Bartlett said, “Now, you can easily find top-level, high-quality women’s, men’s and mixed quartets in the same venue.” The Barbershop Harmony Society is also inclusive of other styles. Bartlet said, “Most of the singers likely sing predominantly 4-part non-barbershop music. The barbershop style is mostly used in the contest setting, and for those new to the style who need to learn the style traits.” Bartlett will continue to be an active coach for choruses and quartets throughout the district. He is the founder and has been the director of the Nebraska Vocal Initiative since 2017. He has directed the Lincoln Continentals in the past (2009-2011). Bartlet said, “I enjoy interacting with singers who are there because of their lifelong passion for singing and fraternity. People from all walks of life, all income levels, all ages, all genders are included, and it is a wonderful feeling to be able to reach beyond the normal demographic.” He added, “I also enjoy engaging with youth and how younger singers (especially high school) respond when they nail that perfect chord!” Bartlett’s involvement with the Barbershop Harmony Society began in 2003 in St. Joseph, Missouri with the American BarberBoys. Bartlet completed a dissertation on barbershop— “Healthy Performance Practice for Male Barbershop Musicians.” Bartlett has also integrated the barbershop style to the Peru State College Prestige group, which he took on tour to Chicago in 2018 to perform with a past international champion, The New Tradition Chorus.

Aaron Odvody (Swanton, Neb.), a criminal justice student, said, “She always reaches out to her students to make sure they understand assignments.” Odvody said, “Dr. Mahan has reached out to her students to make sure they are getting assignments completed and if there is anything she can help with. I absolutely love her teaching style because it’s unique. Before I had a class with her, she actually was giving me class schedule advice.” Mahan joined Peru State College in 2016 and is an assistant professor of criminal justice in the school of professional studies. She teaches Policing, Directed Study in Policing, Research Methods, Juvenile Delinquency, Criminalistics, Seminar in Criminal Justice and Directed Study in Seminar in Criminal Justice. Mahan is a co-advisor for the Peru State College chapter of Lambda Alpha Epsilon, the criminal justice honors society, and has taken students to every regional and national conference for the American Criminal Justice Association-Lambda Alpha Epsilon since joining the Peru State faculty. ###

Peru State College is recognized for affordable bachelor’s degrees
Peru State College is recognized for affordable bachelor’s degrees MAY 15, 2020
Peru, Nebraska – Peru State College was the only Nebraska-based online program included in OnlineSchoolCenter.com’s list of Cheap Online Bachelor Degrees for 2020. The list details thirty colleges and universities offering affordable online degrees around the country. Jason Hogue, director of marketing and communications at Peru State College, said, “The College takes pride in maintaining its nationally recognized value and excellence.” “As an institution we prefer to describe our programs as affordable, but this list cuts through the clutter of the crowded higher education space to highlight the importance of cost, accreditation and accessibility for prospective students.” OnlineSchoolCenter.com writes “Our 30 Cheap Online Bachelor Degree Programs for 2020 indicates the colleges and universities that offer top-of-the-line and affordable online bachelor degree programs.” The site adds, “Through a cheap online bachelor’s degree program, the success of any individual could happen right in the comfort of their homes and at their own pace.” The site’s methodology compared institutions with more than one bachelor’s degree program, the removal of enrollment barriers, among other points of quality and accreditation. OnlineSchoolCenter.com also highlighted Peru State’s “tuition rates designed to underscore the low-cost undergraduate degree options.” The full list and methodology can be found at https://www.onlineschoolscenter.com/cheap-online-bachelors-degrees/ ### Quentin Victor contributed to this release.

Peru State College adds new major
Peru State College adds new major MAY 26, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 26, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429 Peru, Nebraska- Peru State College added Interdisciplinary Studies to the list majors offered to undergraduate students this fall. Students in the Interdisciplinary Studies major can propose programs that combine existing disciplines at Peru State College. Dr. Tim Borchers, vice president for academic affairs at Peru State College, said “The Interdisciplinary Studies major supports the College’s mission of providing an accessible and personalized transformational educational experience.” This program is designed to meet the needs of students with distinct educational goals unique from other majors Peru State College offers. The program may also interest students with undeclared majors or students who wish to pursue a major not offered by Peru State College without transferring to another school. Borchers said, “The Interdisciplinary Studies major allows students to propose their own programs of study in order to meet their career, professional or personal goals. Interested students would meet with an advisor to help plan the program.” Although students have the opportunity to plan a custom major, proposals must meet several requirements. Borchers said, “Students with well-defined educational goals that are not met by any of the majors listed in the catalog may submit a proposal to create an Interdisciplinary Major. The major should be distinct from existing majors and use a set of courses to create an intentional, integrated and outcome-based program of study.” Additionally, students must have a 3.0 GPA at the time of application. The program must include 48-57 credits of coursework. At least 30 credits must come from a primary discipline, at least 12 credits must come from one additional discipline, and 30 credits must be upper level (courses numbered 300 or above). The program must also include a capstone experience such as a class, project, thesis, or internship. The program’s path to become a new major required several approvals and took more than one year to be implemented this fall. The approval process began last year with the Nebraska State College System Academics and Curriculum Committee, which recommended approval of the new major on March 12, 2019. It then went to the Nebraska State College System Faculty Senate to be heard twice. The Senate recommended approval both times— the second hearing was on April 18, 2019. Next, the proposal went to Peru State College President Dan Hanson, who approved it on May 20, 2019. It moved to the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees which approved the new program at the June 2019 meeting. The last approval came from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission, a regional accreditor in the United States. The organization accredits all degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in 19 states, including Nebraska. This approval assures the program’s quality and credibility. The Commission approved the Interdisciplinary Studies major last month, the final step in the approval process needed for Peru State College to offer the program this fall. ###

State Colleges to Start Early, Complete Fall Term by Thanksgiving
State Colleges to Start Early, Complete Fall Term by Thanksgiving MAY 26, 2020
For Immediate Release: May 26, 2020 Contact: Judi Yorges, Director of External Relations and Communications, 402.471.3448 LINCOLN – Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges will welcome students back to campus one week earlier for the 2020 fall semester and end the semester before Thanksgiving. In reaching the decision, the Nebraska State College System (NSCS) was guided by its commitment to: providing a high-quality, affordable undergraduate education that is accessible to all Nebraskans; being a valuable partner to the rural communities we serve; and the safety of all students, faculty, staff and their families.
Prior to the pandemic, the NSCS was already assessing transitions in its academic calendar to better meet the needs of its students. This new calendar will allow students to complete the fall term early, giving them the opportunity to take additional courses during the three-week December term, complete an internship, or return home and work until the start of the spring semester. Anticipated dates for the December term are Nov. 30 – Dec. 18. “The unique nature of the State Colleges allows us to be flexible and provide this new option for our students to stay on track to complete their degree on time or early at an affordable rate,” said Paul Turman, Chancellor of the NSCS. Each of the State Colleges is working through the details of this plan for their individual institutions. The 2020 Fall Academic Calendar for the State Colleges is: First day of classes: Aug.17 Removing Mid-Term Break (previously Oct. 19-20) Last day of classes: Nov. 20 Final exams: Nov. 23-25 Commencement to be determined later based on public health directives ###

The Thomas Ediger Award is designed to honor an outstanding club or organization that has shown outstanding service to the campus and its surrounding community. Vivian Brown (Wichita, Kan.), Peru Association of Student-Athletes president said, “This is an honor and PASA has worked hard this year to serve our student-athletes and our campus community.” Ted Harshbarger, Peru Association of Student-Athletes co-advisor said, “This is exciting for PASA to earn the Dr. Thomas Ediger award. Dr. Kate Trout awarded EPSCoR funds for dengue study
Dr. Kate Trout awarded EPSCoR funds for dengue study JUN 8, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 8, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429 Peru, Nebraska- Dr. Kate Trout, assistant professor of biology and human health, received a Nebraska 2019 EPSCoR grant for undergraduate research experience in small colleges and universities. EPSCoR is short for an established program to stimulate competitive research. The program is a National Science Foundation grant. This program provides funding up to $5,000 per project for collaborations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) areas. Trout was awarded funds in February 2019 to research a dengue-control tool in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Trout said, “The publications for the research are forthcoming, but a well-designed dengue control tool can help connect the community members to each other and to the healthcare system where resources are scarce.” “We could not have conducted this work without the support of PSC, Nebraska EPSCoR, or our local collaborators.” Trout and Peru State College students Nicole McMann, Shianna Oestreich and Jessenia Hincapie worked two years on the project. Research began in March 2019 with a pilot study funded by Peru State College Student Engagement Enhancement Funds. Trout and the students collected preliminary data on contributing factors to the high incidence of dengue and Zika viruses. This initial study was foundational for the dengue-control tool. Trout said, “This pilot study gave us important information about data collection in a rural Costa Rican setting, and provided preliminary data to develop a larger scale survey to test the feasibility and development dengue control tool (funded by EPSCoR).” The team returned to Costa Rica in January 2020 for data collection. They also engaged in community outreach and service during the trip. Trout said, “While conducting research in rural Costa Rica, PSC students not only learned skills in operational research and applied epidemiology, but also engaged in service activities, such as free public health clinic, after school program with a local NGO (trying to extend educational hours), educational summer camps, and science and health demonstrations for children.” “These kind of opportunities can help us stimulate innovation in low resource settings that can act as models to approach the most challenging rural health issues around the world.” ###

State Colleges Lower Online Rate, Offer Opportunities for Degree Completion
State Colleges Lower Online Rate, Offer Opportunities for Degree Completion JUN 8, 2020
For Immediate Release: June 8, 2020 Contact: Judi Yorges, Director of External Relations and Communications, 402.471.3448 LINCOLN – Chadron State, Peru State, and Wayne State Colleges are lowering their online rate to $299 per credit hour and creating avenues to assist working students in completing their degrees. The cost of a four-year degree and changes in personal circumstances can impede a student’s educational goals. The Nebraska State Colleges are creating solutions to get students back on track to complete their college degrees. “Affordability and accessibility are core pillars of the State Colleges,” said Dr. Paul Turman, Chancellor of the Nebraska State College System (NSCS). “Our students come from a variety of different backgrounds and experiences and often balance competing work and family commitments making earning their degree challenging. That is why Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State College are removing as many barriers as possible to enable students to complete their degrees.” The State Colleges will lower their undergraduate online rate for the 2020-21 academic year to $299 per credit hour, making it the best education value in Nebraska. The rate is a flat cost per credit hour and does not require any additional fees. The new online rate is pending Board approval at the June 16 meeting of the NSCS Board of Trustees. The State Colleges’ degree completion program offers a flexible and fully online paths forward for anyone who would like to complete an unfinished four-year degree including a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree program. Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State College will consider a variety of experiences for credit toward completion of a degree. The program is designed for: Substantial career experience of adult learners Experience earned as veterans and members of the armed forces Up to 66 credit hours from accredited community colleges including special consideration for students who have already earned an associate’s degree and wish to continue their education Up to 90 credit hours from other accredited four-year institutions Transfer options for students who have completed a technical associates degree By accepting some or all of the credits that a student has already earned from their previous education and life experiences, the NSCS offers students a faster and less expensive alternative to completing an undergraduate student. The NSCS is one of the few college systems in the nation to provide a flexible pathway to a four-year degree through the Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree. The BAS degree is available to candidates whose complementary area of emphasis is management, and who transfer from other institutions after having completed a technical associate degree program or the equivalent in credits or life experience. ###

Peru State granted 13 Master of Science in Education degrees, three Master of Science in Organizational Management degrees, 16 Bachelor of Applied Science degrees and 145 Bachelor of Science degrees. Additional details regarding the December 2020 event will be released in the future. Jason Hogue, director of marketing and communications at Peru State, said, “With the uncertainty about the trajectory and duration of the Coronavirus outbreak, it has become clear that it would be best to postpone the May commencement.” “The College looks forward to celebrating the accomplishments of its graduates, with their family and friends, in December.” Nestled in the hills of historic southeast Nebraska, Peru State College offers a mix of innovative online and traditional classroom undergraduate and graduate programs, including online graduate degrees in education and organizational management. Gul Ahmad Published in Parasites and Vectors Journal
Gul Ahmad Published in Parasites and Vectors Journal JUN 22, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 22, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429
Peru, Nebraska- Dr. Gul Ahmad, Associate professor of biology, co-authored a study, “Chronic whipworm infection exacerbates Schistosoma mansoni egg-induced hepatopathology in non-human primates”. The study was published in the journal, Parasites & Vectors, in February. Dr. Ahmad’s main work is on vaccine development. Currently, Ahmad’s focus is on developing a vaccine for schistosomiasis. Schistosomiasis is caused by infection of Schistosoma, a genus of flatworm contracted by human contact with contaminated freshwater. Ahmad said, “Schistosomiasis is prevalent in 78 countries around the world.” “800 million people are at risk of infection and 250 million have the disease”. Ahmad has been working on a vaccine for the disease for 15 years. Ahmad, along with two colleagues, patented a vaccine, which was granted in 2016. Vaccine testing was completed in mice, and in February 2020, testing was completed in baboons. The first phase of human clinical trials will be underway in November. Ahmad described the study published in February as serendipitous. While testing the schistosomiasis vaccine in baboons, Ahmad’s group found the animals had whipworm infections. The group recognized the potential for the study on combined effects of whipworm and Schistosoma infection in baboons. Trichuriasis, known as whipworm infection, is also a disease that affects humans, and according to the study, often affects the same communities as schistosomiasis. According to Ahmad, the trichuriasis and schistosomiasis combination may worsen disease-fighting abilities. Ahmad said, “It suppresses our immune systems because what we found here, baboons had more pathology against schistosomes.” The study concluded the analysis of co-infection provided insight into liver damage. The study also discussed the requirement of further studies to examine whether a schistosomiasis vaccine can protect animals against other types of parasitic worm infections. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded the study, and Peru State College was listed as an affiliate in the journal article. Ahmad’s newest paper, “Fifteen years of Sm-p80-based vaccine trials” was recently accepted by the journal, Frontiers in Immunology. Publication is forthcoming. ###

Peru State College adds new Public History certificate
Peru State College adds new Public History certificate JUL 23, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 22, 2020 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429
Peru, Nebraska- The Nebraska State College System board approved the new Peru State College Public History certificate program during the June 16 meeting. This program may interest students who plan to work in public history. Public history refers to public-facing positions such as museums, state and national parks, national monuments and social media. Dr. Kathi Nehls is the assistant professor of history at Peru State College. Nehls said, “Public history differs in significant ways from academic history. The audience is different—the general public rather than academics.” “There is also a sense of shared authority and collaboration with other disciplines in public history that is not found in academic history.” The new certificate will not only interest students preparing for graduate studies and public-facing positions in history, but also students in any public-facing position. The courses will prepare students for any job that includes responsibilities such as historical representation, public relations, curation, public policy or urban planning. Courses will include hands-on, practical engagement through class activities, projects and required internships. Students will also work with social media and digital platforms. Digital platforms include uses for spatial history, virtual and in-person exhibits, crowdsourcing projects, online oral history projects and data-mining analysis. The program requires 15 credits, including: Hist 322 Introduction to Public History (3) (New Course) Hist 324 Introduction to Museum and Archival Practices (3) (New Course) PSCI/BUS 468 Public Administration (3) Hist 411 Internship in Public History (6)
Nehls said, “The program will allow us to work with local and regional historical sites and societies who frequently call on the Social Science faculty for student interns who are qualified to help with staffing and special projects.” “Recently requests for interns have come from Peru, Brownville, Auburn, Nebraska City, the Homestead National Monument and Ft. Sisseton State Park in South Dakota. We are very excited to offer this additional, marketable credential to Peru State students.”
