Peru State Celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with 2nd Annual Unity Brunch
Peru State Celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with 2nd Annual Unity Brunch JAN 4, 2021
Peru, Nebraska - The second annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Brunch was held on Monday, January 18. The event celebrated the life of Dr. King and his vision of equal rights for all. The event was held in the Al Wheeler Activity Center and hosted by the Black Student Union and the Council for Diversity, Equality and Inclusion. The brunch included a live performance by the Hoyt Street Jazz Ensemble and included speakers, Dr. Danita Webb and Ms. Delores Matthews. The event also included a reading of the first-place winning essay from Birchcrest Elementary School’s 6th grade class by Dr. Robert Ingram. Dr. Webb spoke to the college via zoom to about the everyday effects that racial disparity has in her own personal and professional life and the lives of her friends and colleagues. Webb said, “You see, we cannot continue to remain silent. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.’ But speaking up and speaking out, doesn’t just rest on the shoulders of the oppressed, we must unite.” Webb also paid tribute to the late civil rights activist and politician, John Lewis, and his belief of getting into good trouble, she urged the audience to “Speak up, speak out, get in the way.” After Webb’s presentation, Dr. Ingram read an essay by Brooklyn Mickells, a student in Mrs. Ashlee Shreck’s 6th grade class from Birchcrest Elementary school in Bellevue Nebraska. The topic was “I am a difference maker.” Mickells wrote, “I really want to help those less fortunate; it would really make me happy to know what I’m doing is helping out and bringing smiles to their faces.” Ms. Matthews led the assembly through a history lesson on the music employed by Martin Luther King Jr. and the NAACP’s fight for equality, concluding with a live performance of John Legend’s millennial anthem, “Glory.” The Brunch concluded with remarks made by Peru State’s President, Dr. Dan Hanson, focused on his reaction to the George Floyd protests. “This past year, my assumptions about progress towards equality have been challenged. What I assumed was true, is not the truth that others live. I now have a deeper understanding that for this dream for America and this dream for Peru State College to become a reality, we have to commit to self-examination, we have to be intentional, we have to plan. Visions and dreams are fulfilled with plans and diligence… “I have a deeper understanding of how racism, mean and hateful, even threatening comments, by a few, impacts the lives and experiences of all, of our friends, family, colleagues, and students of color. These challenges to my assumptions have recommitted me to change, the change necessary to achieve Dr. Martin Luther King’s Jr.’s dream, which is America’s dream. So I encourage you to recommit as well… “I challenge each of you, as I challenge myself to be inquisitive, question your assumptions, look for new information about the experience of people of color, and how we can grow at Peru State College.”

Peru State College Open for Spring Semester
Peru State College Open for Spring Semester BY JASON HOGUE | JAN 12, 2021 Peru State College
Peru State College Open for Spring Semester Continues Weekly COVID-19 Testing Peru, Nebraska – Peru State College started the Spring Semester on Monday, January 11. On-campus classes were available this fall and spring due to extensive on-campus testing. Peru State is dedicated to on-campus testing for students, faculty and staff. Testing is an important part of the College’s plan to keep campus and our community healthy and safe. The College’s Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs, Jesse Dorman, writes, “The College determined that continuing policies from the fall, and requiring testing, is best for the health and safety of our campus and community.” “We came to this conclusion after examining our cases and quarantines from last semester; and consulting with experts, including the Southeast District Health Department and an alum at the Yale School of Public Health, Joseph Fauver.” Peru State, in partnership with TestNebraska and Corteva (Des Moines), was able to administer more than 6000 tests on campus last fall. The College will continue to administer tests on campus and support vaccination opportunities for students, faculty and staff. With these efforts, the College best continues its mission to provide a personalized and engaging educational experience for all students. That mission has guided adjustments to new ways of living and operating in the midst of the COVID-19 epidemic. A broad-based team of campus constituents, in consultation with health experts, developed new procedures over the summer for academic experiences, athletics, dining, on-campus housing and student life. These procedures continue into the spring semester. Several college amenities including the library, dining hall and fitness center continue to be closed to the public. Home fans are invited to athletic competitions, but no visiting fans will be admitted through the end of the winter season. ###

Progress is Made to Rebuild in Flood-Impacted Areas of Nemaha County
For More Information Contact: Northeast Nemaha County Long Term Recovery Group Deborah Solie (405) 880-0559 deborahsolie@gmail.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 19, 2021 As 2021 begins, the Northeast Nemaha Long Term Recovery Group reports progress on key infrastructure projects while continuing to advocate for flood recovery for the region. Peru, Nebraska – As 2020 came to a close, the Northeast Nemaha County Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) received positive updates on several infrastructure projects that are key to recovery for the region. “I am pleased to report a contract was signed between the City of Peru and the Auburn Board of Public Works solidifying the plan to join the City to BPW’s water supply,” said David Pease, mayor of Peru. “This allows the engineering design and planning for construction to move forward.” The City of Peru has also accepted an offer from FEMA to fund 75% of construction costs (no more than $5.2 million) related to building the water connection to Auburn. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency will provide 12.5% match and the City of Peru will provide the remaining 12.5%. “With the funding from FEMA, the City is well situated to address the costs associated with the water treatment project,” said Pease. “The City has already been awarded grant funding to cover part of our match and we have an opportunity to apply for additional funding through the state. Our goal is to cover the City’s portion of the project through grants.” Additional good news was shared by LTRG members Brett Adams and Sen. Julie Slama, who reported the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2020 passed both the House and the Senate and was signed into law by President Trump in late December. “We appreciate Brett Adams, Sen. Slama and Congressman Smith for their efforts to add language to WRDA, which will make the Peru levee eligible for Federal Funding and allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to repair the breached levee that has protected Peru since its construction in 1952,” said Dan Hanson, Chair of the LTRG. “With the passage of this act, we hope to see movement and communication from the U.S. ACE regarding the Peru levee this year.” The City of Peru also received notification they had been approved to receive funding through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). These funds will be used to purchase properties in the 100-year flood plain and turn the area into green space. “We want to celebrate the movement on these flood-related projects,” said Deborah Solie, Disaster Recovery Coordinator. “But, also remember the Peru community and surrounding areas suffered an estimated $7.91 million in economic loss, including $4.2 million in agricultural revenue losses due to levee damage. The LTRG’s goal is to emerge from recovery as a community stronger than before the floods.” The LTRG, City of Peru and leaders throughout the community continue to work together as recovery continues for the region. About Our Group: The Northeast Nemaha County Long-term Recovery Group brings constituents together to build relationships, coordinate efforts, communicate needs, and pursue funding to rebuild and strengthen the City of Peru and the surrounding region and support individuals following the 2019 floods and other potential disasters. ###

Peru State College to celebrate Black History Month
Peru State College to celebrate Black History Month FEB 1, 2021
Peru, Neb. – Peru State College has released a slate of virtual and on-campus activities for Black History Month. Seventeen events are scheduled from February 1 through March 2. Virtual events are open to the public. At this time, on campus activities are open only to students, faculty and staff. Dr. Hanson, president of Peru State College, said, “The College is excited to join Black History Month celebrations across the country. After the struggles of the last year, this February is a unique opportunity to engage in ongoing conversations about race and the African-American experience.” “COVID-19 has created some obstacles to this endeavor, but campus leaders have worked to create a robust experience both on campus and in virtual spaces. With a limit on campus visitation, we invite our communities to join us in online activities both unique to the College and shared across our nation.” Crystal Hutson, Director of Student Activities and Programs, writes, “This year, I’m excited we have so many internal and external groups included on our event calendar. We also have the opportunity to host virtual events that will engage friends, family, alumni and local partners - in addition to the events we host on campus.” Hutson adds, “I am thrilled to invite the public to virtual museum tours by the Great Plains Black History Museum, Dr. Spencer Davis’ presentation on W.E.B. DuBois, and the virtual plays offered by our Peru Theatre Company.
W.E.B. DuBois and Black Studies Presentation The first week of February, Peru State Faculty Emeritus, Dr. Spencer Davis, will present “W.E.B. DuBois and Black Studies.” The February 4 event is sponsored by the College’s Committee for Racial Reconciliation. Davis was a professor of history at Peru State College for 33 years. He continues to present on historical topics across the state and on campus. Davis is also a part of the College’s Committee for Racial Reconciliation. The presentation will be completely online and open to the public. More information about how to attend is presented below.
Great Plains Black History Museum Virtual Exhibit Presentations In association with the Great Plains Black History Museum, Black History Month will feature six virtual exhibit presentations. The presentations will cover topics uniquely important to the history of African Americans in Nebraska and the region. In 1975, Mrs. Bertha Calloway envisioned sharing the rich history of African Americans with the Omaha community. For the past 40 years, The Great Plains Black History Museum has been a striving institution dedicated to publicizing and preserving the achievements of the region’s vibrant African-American heritage. All Virtual Exhibit Presentations will be completely online and open to the public. More information about how to attend is presented below.
Topdog/Underdog Theatrical Production The Peru Theatre Company will present Topdog/Underdog on February 26 and 27. Topdog/Underdog is by Suzan-Lori Parks and its representation of race in America won numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. From pulitizer.org, “A darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity, Topdog/Underdog tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names, given to them as a joke, foretell a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. Haunted by their past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of their future.”

About the Black Student Union The purpose of the Peru State College Black Student Union is to foster a sense of community, stimulate the intellectual, social, cultural, and political growth of all Peru State College students, and provide support for students and the community. The Black Student Union is open for membership to all Peru State students of all backgrounds. About the Committee for Racial Reconciliation Working since the summer of 2019, the ongoing conversation about Racial Reconciliation represents Peru State’s ongoing commitment to providing every student an equal opportunity to learn, to grow and to participate. The evidence from student reports, alumni responses, and campus survey data tells us that minority students face persisting barriers to that equal opportunity in spite of our efforts to achieve diversity and inclusion. The Committee believes the College has a unique opportunity to address these barriers and to translate ideals into reality. About the Council for Diversity, Equality and Inclusion The Council for Diversity, Equality and Inclusion seeks to engage the entire Peru State College community in the important work related to diversity, equality, and inclusion. Peru State College and the Council recognize that all members of the community are responsible for fostering an inclusive environment on campus and preparing our students for an increasingly diverse world. The Council is a campus-wide leadership team made up of students, faculty and staff with a mission of providing strategic leadership in the areas of inclusion, equality, and diversity. Its goal is to create a community that is welcoming and supportive of each of its members.

This is an exciting time in Peru State College's history. The comprehensive search process involved input and deliberation from a wide range of constituents and stakeholders, including the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members, and allowed the Search Committee to choose the best leader for Peru State College and its future. "I am truly honored to be given the opportunity to lead such an amazing institution in continuing to build a strong and prosperous future," said Dr. Michael Evans, next president of Peru State. "Peru State College is clearly a special place, and it will be a joy to work with the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to ensure its success." Peru State Students Excel at PBL State Competition
Peru State Students Excel at PBL State Competition Phi Beta Lambda Logo
Peru, Nebraska – Eleven Peru State College students competed in the 2020-2021 Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) State Leadership Conference. Peru State’s PBL chapter earned 32 top-eight awards including ten first place finishes this year, a chapter award and three additional awards. Dr. Sheri Grotrian, professor of business and PBL advisor, shared, "While our number of student participants may be lower than previous years due to the pandemic that has somewhat curtailed student engagement, I am extremely proud of those who chose to participate and excel in this statewide competition. As we all have seen in this last year, the virtual work environment has become more prevalent, so this virtual competition provides yet another real-world application for these students to experience." In each event, the top two places in production or performance events or three places in objective tests are automatically eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference, which will be held virtually this June. At this time, seven students have automatically qualified for Nationals. Students may compete in only two events at Nationals, and since Peru State has several students with options, other students may advance in the standings as participants decide which events they will enter.
Chapter Awards The Peru State College PBL chapter was again recognized with a Gold Level Excellence Award. Gold Level Excellence is the highest level possible and shows that the chapter contributed to regional and national conferences, PBL public relations, community service, and fundraising. Peru, Nebraska - Peru State College held a ribbon cutting this week for the completed walkway designed to make the east side of campus accessible for students in wheelchairs. The project included routes from the Performing Arts Center and Sesquicentennial Plaza to W. N. Delzell Hall and Campus Services, as well as related site lighting. Also in the project plan was a new ramp to the Campus Services building. Members of the LB 309 Task Force were on campus for the ribbon cutting, including the Task Force's Administrator, Michelle Potts, and the Director of the Department of Administrative Services for the State of Nebraska, Jason Jackson. The 309 Task Force Division was created to address the State's significant deferred building renewal needs in state-owned facilities by providing funding and oversight of building upgrades. Dr. Paul Turman, Chancellor of the Nebraska State College System, spoke at the event, saying, "In 2014, Peru State College and the LB 309 Task Force teamed up to accomplish an accessibility study of the campus. They identified a significant need to create ADA accessible routes for the east portion of campus and under their leadership an allocation was approved by Governor Ricketts to begin design and construction of the project." Jackson also spoke at the event, adding, "At the Department of Administrative Services, we work towards the Governor’s mission of creating a more effective, more efficient, and customer-focused state government and ensuring that our services are accessible to all people is the most important aspect of customer service. This important project was an investment of over almost $500,000 and is one of just the many ADA related projects that the 309 Task Force has spent more than $7 million implementing over the last several years." "We appreciate the great partnership between our Department and the Task Force, Peru State College, and the Nebraska State College System on this project and look forward to forward to this continued partnership on future projects to ensure that this campus and all State College campuses are accessible to all." Additional comments from Dr. Dan Hanson, president of Peru State College, and the Director of Facility Services, Darrin Reeves, thanked the College's partners in the state, the construction team at Genesis Contracting, and the project's designers, Schemmer Associations. In preparation for the new ADA walkways, new push button door operators were also installed in three buildings; The south side entrance of Delzell where the ADA walkway is under construction, the elevator entrance to the Administration building and the northeast entrance to the Campus Services building. ###

MSOM 2021 Awards Announced at Peru State College
MSOM 2021 Awards Announced at Peru State College
Peru State College’s entrepreneurial master’s program has ranked #1 on eight related lists by Business Degree Central and GradDegree.com. Peru State’s entrepreneurial master’s program ranked #1 in the united states on GradDegree.com as well as the top entrepreneurial studies school in Nebraska and the Top Plains States. According to GradDegree.com, Entrepreneurial Studies is the 101st most popular major in the United States with 1,778 degrees and certificates awarded in 2018-2019 and the 69th most popular degree in Nebraska. Business Degree Central said, “Factors related to overall quality of the school, post-graduation earnings, average student debt, and more accumulated were considered when coming up with this list.” GradDegree.com stated, “We place a high emphasis on the school's quality as well as its sticker price. Even though a college may be affordable, it may not offer value. More specifically, we discount our quality score by the published tuition and fees charged by a school. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The value is determined by how much quality your dollar buys.” In 2019, Peru State College awarded 18 Master’s degrees in entrepreneurial studies. Fauver receives 2021 Distinguished Service Award
Fauver receives 2021 Distinguished Service Award BY JASON HOGUE | MAY 14, 2021 Joseph Fauver
Peru, Nebraska - During Peru State College's May commencement, alumni Joseph "Seph" Fauver received the 2021 Distinguished Service Award. The Distinguished Service Award was established by the Nebraska State College System Board of Trustees. It authorizes each college to nominate a graduate or someone who has made significant contribution to the College or to an alumnus who has achieved distinction and recognition in his or her field. Recipients are nominated by the college president and approved by the NSCS Board of Trustees. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world, Dr. Joseph Fauver applied his expertise in genomics and genomic epidemiology to protect communities by studying the transmission of the COVID-19. This expertise put him at the front lines of the efforts to fight the pandemic. Fauver led testing efforts with players in the NBA Bubble to identify asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19. He also worked with the National Football League to do real-time genomic epidemiology to track sources of spread within NFL teams. During the fall he advised journalists at The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal regarding COVID-19. Through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control he is using genomic sequencing to investigate the evolution, emergence and spread of infections in communities. He is working with the state of Connecticut to test for the more transmissible new variants of COVID-19 emerging in the world. Last summer, Fauver reached out to provide guidance as the College prepared for fall classes on campus. He continues to provide weekly guidance by phone and has helped direct resources to the most impactful practices to provide a safe environment for the campus community. His expertise was also critical in developing and implementing the College’s ongoing COVID-19 testing strategies. Fauver earned his bachelor’s degree in Natural Science-Biochemistry from Peru State College and a Ph.D. in Medical Entomology and Arbovirology at Colorado State University. ###

"Winners of this award show a true dedication to the members of the Peru State College Community through their continued service to students and the institution and prove once more that the motto of 'Once a Bobcat, Always a Bobcat' is more than simply a catchy slogan." Spring Commencement Dan and Elaine Hanson were also recognized at the Spring 2021 Commencement. The Vice Presidents, Debbie White, Dr. Jesse Dorman and Dr. Tim Borchers, on behalf of the College's faculty and staff, presented the Hansons with a print of the sesquicenntenial painting by Todd Williams and a Peru State flag. Kortnie Sheppard, class of 2021, shared, "When [the Black Student Union] held our second spoken word night, I casually asked President Hanson if he would be willing to perform a poem - and without putting any deep thought into it, he said yes. Before he performed the poem, he took a moment to share how much he enjoyed the [poet] Langston Hughes." "It meant so much that the president of our college was willing to share a poem with the group. I don't know if President Hanson actually knows how much that meant to me. Thank you for all you have done for Peru State and the Black Student Union. We are really going to miss you." Andrew Pavel, class of 2021, shared, "[My freshman year] Elaine offered to help us bake her famous cookies as a fundraiser for the Science Club. I soon found out just how active she was on campus. Through numerous organizations, I have worked on several projects spearheaded by Elaine to help serve this campus and the community that surrounds it. Such projects included hanging Christmas decorations to helping a community member scoop her sidewalk after the winter snows."

Pam and Fred Robertson receive 2020 Distinguished Service Award
Pam and Fred Robertson receive 2020 Distinguished Service Award BY JASON HOGUE | MAY 14, 2021 Fred and Pam Robertson
Peru, Nebraska - During Peru State College's May commencement, Pam and Fred Robertson received the 2020 Distinguished Service Award. Pam and Fred Robertson met Norma Jeanne Fensler in the late 1980s when Pam assisted Jeanne as her realtor. Jeanne was a recent widow and through the process, Pam became a friend and confidant. Pam also played a pivotal role in Jeanne’s later years, helping daily challenges as Jeanne aged and struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. Several years before the onset of Alzheimer’s, Jeanne asked that the proceeds of her estate be directed to a cause Pam felt was worthy. The Robertsons were both familiar with Peru State College – Fred as an alumni and Pam as a former co-director of the Peru State College Foundation Board. Pam directed the proceeds of Jeanne’s estate to create the Norma Jeanne Fensler Memorial Scholarship at Peru State College. Pam’s intent for the Norma Jeanne Fensler Memorial Scholarship is to allow students who would not otherwise be able to attend college the opportunity to attend Peru State and seek a degree. Pam also intends this scholarship to memorialize the kindness and generosity of her dear friend Jeanne. The Norma Jeanne Fensler Memorial Scholarship will provide more than $80,000 in scholarships each year. ###

Richardson named 2021 Champion for OSU Agriculture Award
Richardson named 2021 Champion for OSU Agriculture Award BY JASON HOGUE | JUL 9, 2021 Arlan Richardson, photo courtesy of the Reynolds Oklahoma Center on Aging.
Stillwater, Oklahoma - Oklahoma State University (OSU) has named six Champions of Agriculture for 2021 including Peru State Collage alumni, Arlan Richardson. From the OSU website for the Ferguson College of Agriculture, "The OSU Agriculture Champion Award recognizes and honors individuals who are not graduates of the Ferguson College of Agriculture, but who have brought distinction to OSU Agriculture and have demonstrated a continuing interest and commitment in agricultural sciences and natural resources." More information from Oklahoma State University: Arlan Richardson of Oklahoma City received his bachelor’s degree from Peru State College in Nebraska and his doctoral degree in chemistry from OSU. He currently serves as a senior research career scientist at the Oklahoma City VA Medical Center, as well as an adjunct professor for OSU’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences. As a leading authority on the effects and process of aging, Richardson also is the director of the Oklahoma Nathan Shock Aging Center and holds the Donald W. Reynold Endowed Chair of Aging Research Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. John Gustafson, department head for OSU’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, nominated Richardson and emphasized his strong connection to the department by the establishment and continued funding of the Dr. Arlan Richardson Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Undergraduate and Graduate Research Scholars Endowment fund. “Professor Richardson has become a quintessential example of an OSU science graduate program success,” Gustafson wrote in the nomination packet. “He is richly deserving of recognition as a Champion, as he has consistently brought accolades back to our department and Division and actively supports our department’s multiple missions.” More information from the Reynolds Oklahoma Center on Aging Dr. Richardson has mentored and directed the research of more than 50 Ph.D. graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty and is the author of more than 240 peer-reviewed scientific publications. In 1993, he received the Nathan Shock Award from the Gerontology Research Center at the National Institute on Aging for his pioneering research on the effect of dietary restriction on gene expression. In 1995, he received the Robert W. Kleemeier Award for outstanding research in the field of gerontology from the Gerontological Society of America, and in 2001 the Harman Research Award for research contributions in the field of aging and dietary restriction from the American Aging Association. He received the Irving Wright Award of Distinction in Aging Research from the American Federation for Aging Research (2008) and the Lord Cohen Medal for Services to Gerontology from the British Society for Research on Ageing. His leadership roles include serving as president of both the Gerontological Society of America and the American Aging Association. In addition, Dr. Richardson served on the Board of Scientific Counselors at the National Institute on Aging from 2002 to 2007 and the National Advisory Council on Aging from 2010 to 2013. In 1991, he was Chair of the Gordon Conference on the Biology of Aging, San Miniato, Italy, and in 2008 the Chair/Organizer of the Keystone Symposium on Metabolic Pathways of Longevity. Dr. Richardson's research has focused on various aspects of aging, e.g., (i) the effects of aging and dietary restriction on gene expression in rats and mice, (ii) testing the oxidative stress theory of aging by measuring the effect of alterations in the antioxidant defense system on the lifespan and pathology of transgenic and knockout mice, and (iii) most recently, studying the effect of rapamycin on aging and age-related diseases. His group was the first to show that dietary restriction altered gene expression through changes in specific transcription factors. He is currently studying the mechanism responsible for genotype differences in response to dietary restriction using mouse models. Over the past decade, Dr. Richardson's group has used over 15 transgenic and knockout mouse models with alterations in the antioxidant defense system to study how increased or decreased oxidative damage affects survival, e.g., transgenic/knockout mice for catalase, Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase, Mn-superoxide dismutase, thioredoxin, glutathione peroxidase 1 and 4, and methionine

Harshbarger Joins Peru State College Foundation BY JASON HOGUE | JUL 19, 2021 Ted Harshbarger
Peru, Neb. – After nearly 32 years working for Peru State College, Ted L. Harshbarger has announced his resignation – but he won’t go far. In fact, the veteran administrator will take his talents to an office only a couple of hundred feet from his current one, to serve as Interim Director of the Peru State College Foundation. “I would like to thank the Foundation Board of Directors for selecting me to serve as its interim director. This is a perfect opportunity for me to continue to serve the College and its alumni,” stated Harshbarger. Harshbarger was hired by the Foundation Board during a special meeting on Tuesday, July 13, and his new position begins Aug. 3. The Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation that generates and administers charitable contributions and manages alumni activities to support the College. Harshbarger’s appointment will last at least through June 30, 2022, according to Foundation Chair Jeff Greenwald. “Ted Harshbarger is a perfect fit at the right time for the Foundation to move forward,” Greenwald said. “His willingness to bring over his talents and his passion for the benefit of the future of the Foundation and the College will have immediate impact.” A 1977 graduate of Peru State who lives on the family farm in Richardson County, Harshbarger has a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Since 2010 he has been Associate Athletics Director and Sports Information Director at Peru State. His experiences at the college have covered a wide range of academic, administrative and co-curricular areas, allowing him to get to know thousands of students and work with scores of faculty and staff through the years. Harshbarger has served as Director of Transition Services, and Assessment Coordinator, Director of the Academic Resource Center and Athletics, Dean of Student Life, Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management, Director of Cooperative Education and Career Services, and Interim Athletics Director. He also taught business classes for many years. After 25 years, he also recently retired as the Nebraska Phi Beta Lambda State Adviser, during which he represented Peru State and Nebraska on the National Board of Directors, . “I am delighted that Ted is stepping up to lead the Foundation,” said Peru State President Michael Evans. “The Foundation and the College will benefit from his experience and his expertise, and I look forward to working with Ted to further strengthen Peru State’s philanthropic support.” Harshbarger will join recently-hired Kim Regan, Accounting and Finance Manager, as full-time staff members with the Foundation. Since last September, Kent Propst, who worked part-time as acting Director, will remain with the Foundation in a reduced capacity during the transition. The Foundation is led by a volunteer board. Its investments and other assets recently surpassed $20 million for the first time in its history, Greenwald noted. Harshbarger added, “Having worked closely with the Foundation in the past on several projects, I hope to hit the ground running as Homecoming, the Athletic Hall of Fame, and Giving Day events are fast approaching. “Nearly 75 percent of my work career has been at Peru State,” Harshbarger reflected. "Why not make it a higher percentage?” ###

Peru State College to Participate in 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s Education Exhibition
Peru State College to Participate in 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s Education Exhibition BY JASON HOGUE | SEP 10, 2021
Peru, Nebraska – Peru State College is excited to announce its participation in September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World, a downloadable educational exhibition that presents the history of 9/11, its origins, and its ongoing implications through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks. Told across 14 posters, this exhibition includes archival photographs and images of artifacts from the Museum’s permanent collection. It explores the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and communities at the local, national, and international levels, and encourages critical thinking about the legacies of 9/11. The series of posters are on display in the Peru State College Library. Viewing the exhibit is free and open to the public. Twenty years after the attacks, with terrorism still a threat today, the events of 9/11 and its aftermath remind us that we may never be able to prevent all the actions of people intent on harming others, but we do have control over how we respond to such events. Whether by volunteering in our local communities, serving our nation in the military, caring for the sick, or through other efforts, all of us can help build the world in which we want to live. As we witness history unfolding in our own time, the ways we choose to respond —both large and small—can demonstrate the best of human nature after even the worst of days. This 9/11 Memorial & Museum curated exhibition reflects the core pillars of commemoration, education, and inspiration as we prepare to observe the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. “During this 20th anniversary year, it is our privilege to share these lessons with a new generation, teach them about the ongoing repercussions of the 9/11 attacks and inspire them with the idea that, even in the darkest of times, we can come together, support one another and find the strength to renew and rebuild,” said 9/11 Memorial & Museum President and CEO Alice M. Greenwald. The poster exhibition was developed by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy Demands Wisdom. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this exhibition do not necessarily represent those of the National endowment for Humanities. For questions or more information on this Exhibition, please visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum website or contact them at: press@911memorial.org. Visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum website. ###

Bob and Mary Bohlken Endow Peru State College Scholarship
Bob and Mary Bohlken Endow Peru State College Scholarship BY JASON HOGUE | SEP 20, 2021
Peru, Nebraska– Peru State College alumni, Bob and Mary Riley Bohlken, have decided to pay it forward by endowing a scholarship for a regional student interested in teaching English or elementary school reading. The scholarship will be awarded for the 2022-23 academic year, according to Ted L. Harshbarger, interim director of the Peru State College Foundation. Bob was born in Nebraska City and grew up in Talmage; Mary was born in Falls City and grew up in Dawson. They met at Peru State in 1956 and married in 1958. Both were the first in their families to receive college degrees. Bob had served in the U.S. Army from 1953-56 and was attending Peru State on the GI Bill, but that income was not sufficient. Bob recalls cleaning the Bob Inn (cafeteria) at 6 a.m. for 60 cents an hour to make financial ends meet. Bob graduated with honors from Peru State in June 1959 and took a job teaching English, coaching forensics and directing class plays at Stanton, Iowa High School. In 1960, the Bohlkens moved to Nebraska City, with Bob teaching English, coaching forensics and directing plays. He received his master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1964, and was hired by Peru State College as an English, speech and theatre professor that fall. Mary completed her elementary education degree at Peru State in 1966. Upon receiving his doctoral degree from the University of Kansas, Bob was hired by Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Mo., as an associate professor and chair of its Speech and Theatre Department. Mary received her Master of Science in Education from Northwest Missouri State University in 1976 and taught reading handicapped students at Maryville Elementary School for 20 years, retiring in 1994. Bob served as head of the Division of Communication at Northwest from 1976 to 1983, when he relinquished his administrative responsibilities to develop research and curriculum in semantics and in listening as a language art. That resulted in two books: “Listening to Rural Midwestern Idiom/Folk Sayings” and “Learning to Listen with a Significant Other.” Bob subsequently was inducted into the “International Society for General Semantics” and the “International Listening Association's Hall of Fame.” He retired from Northwest in 2000. But he continued to be a human-interest columnist for a local newspaper. “We hope that some folks will remember us and encourage their deserving grandchildren or great grandchildren to apply for the scholarship,” Bob noted. The Bohlkens still reside in Maryville, Mo. ###

Saul Flores presents The Walk of Immigrants at Peru State
Saul Flores presents The Walk of Immigrants at Peru State BY JASON HOGUE | OCT 7, 2021
Peru, Nebraska - Saul Flores, noted philanthropist and photojournalist, presented The Walk of Immigrants on the Peru State College campus, yesterday, October 6. The presentation documented his journey of 5,328 miles to raise awareness of the journey from Central America to the United States and to raise money for his mother's hometown elementary school in Atencingo, Mexico. Following a trip to his mother's hometown in Mexico, Flores discovered "a community I was meant to serve." Part of the visit revealed the crumbling education system in Atencingo and that the elementary school would be closed. Flores spent three months walking, hitchhiking, and sleeping on the ground and in hiding places. His journey began in Ecuador and ended in Charlotte, North Carolina. In three months, he walked 5,328 miles through ten countries and nine border crossings to document the grueling and dangerous journey of immigrants to the United States. Flores trip raised awareness of the dangers, but it also sparked interest in his photography allowing him to sell his photos and raise additional funds for education in Atencingo. From CampusSpeak.com, "[Flores'] work has been featured on National Public Radio, MSNBC, and TEDX. Additionally, Saul has been featured as a keynote speaker for dozens of universities, inspiring audiences through his visual presentations, in which he helps people realize the capacity of their immense human potential given times of extreme adversity." Flores visit to Peru State was sponsored by four College groups including Student Activities, the Council for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance. ###

Peru, Nebraska – Fritz Stehlik, whose family has deep ties to Peru State College and to southeast Nebraska, has been elected to the Peru State College Foundation Board of Directors. He will serve a three-year term. Stehlik, a 1974 Peru State graduate, is a shareholder and president of the Omaha legal firm Gross & Welch, P.C., L.L.O. The Omaha resident grew up in Nebraska City, where his family owned and operated Norman’s IGA for many years. “I was very fortunate growing up working for my parents in the grocery store as I learned business values and people skills,” Stehlik said. My father was a very successful grocer and by allowing me to be involved in the business I was able to absorb his business acumen and ethics.” Married to the former Charlene Lutz, also a 1974 Peru State graduate, the Stehliks have five children, including daughter Jessica Hillebrandt, a Peru State alumnae. Fritz also has several siblings who graduated from Peru State. He and Charlene have long been active in Peru State’s Omaha Alumni Association, including serving as president for the past four years. Stehlik’s law degree is from the University of Nebraska College of Law. He has been with Gross & Welch for 25 years. “I was introduced to Fritz at the Omaha Alumni event this past summer,” noted Peru State College Foundation Board Chair Jeff Greenwald. “After listening to his comments from the podium, I knew from his passionate message how important the College is to him and his family.” The Peru State College Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation established to solicit and receive charitable gifts in support of Peru State College and its students, faculty and staff. Second Annual Giving Day for Peru State – Oct. 21, 2021
Second Annual Giving Day for Peru State – Oct. 21, 2021 BY JASON HOGUE | OCT 11, 2021
Peru, Nebraska – To celebrate the College’s 154th birthday of the first day of school at Peru State, the College and its Foundation are hosting their second annual “Peru State College Giving Day” on Thursday, October 21. The supportive hashtag for the event is simple, #PeruState154, as it correlates with the 154th year of operation as an institution of higher learning. In addition, Peru State’s first day of school was Oct. 20, 1867. The website for the giving day is https://givingday.peru.edu. It is now live with the giving opportunities opening at midnight on October 21! Peru State College Foundation Interim CEO, Ted L. Harshbarger notes the concepts of a giving day are simple. He stated, “The #PeruState154 Giving Day will be a day to celebrate the Bobcat family through volunteerism and philanthropy on October 21, 2021. The single-day online fundraising and volunteer event for Peru State will bring together students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends to promote the College and through philanthropy will grant opportunities for the next generation of Bobcats.” The goal for the day is to have 154 different donors and 154 different volunteers during the #PeruState154 giving day. Funds generated during the Giving Day will be used primarily in five specific areas which include: Campus Support – The College’s Foundation gives more than $100,000 per year in campus support including capital needs and improvements, support for faculty, staff and departments, as well as, performances, events, and activities which support a vibrant campus culture. Student Support – The Foundation annually provides more than $300,000 annually to support students through scholarships, campus employment, book loans, and other activities which directly impact students. Athletics – Support provided through the Foundation and gifts directly impacts Peru State student-athletes which provides opportunities for talented young people to compete for and earn an outstanding education. Donations support travel, meals for student-athletes, scholarships, clothing, and more. Student Center Expansion/Renovation – The original Student Center was constructed in 1961 and expanded in 1986. It has been remodeled many times, but it does not meet the lifestyle demands of the 21st-century student. What You Love – Donors will have an opportunity to designate their gift to an area on campus that means the most to them. Student/Group Participation Student groups on campus are already making plans to be a part of the Peru State College Giving Day. There has been a challenge established that if the various groups total either 154 in number of 154 hours of service that $154 will be donated to the Foundation for Student Support. The Peru Student Athlete Association (PASA) will hosting a week-long competition between its athletic teams while encouraging each team to try to secure at least 154 personal care or winter-related items. All of the donations will be given to Project Response and SENCA. They will begin their collection at the upcoming football game on Oct. 16. Campus Activities Board (CAB) will be participating in the Bowling for Boobs in Nebraska City that evening while the Peru Student Education Association will be reading to the Peru Daycare. The Peru State Catholic Union will be planting a tree. The Daycare is going to get a lot of love that day as the Student Senate will be doing music activities with them. Rotoract will be making cards for area nursing homes and the Black Student Union will be doing a trash pick-up. In addition, several other groups are planning events on different days. The Science Club will be providing the “scaring” at the Haunted Hayrack Ride at Indian Cave that weekend. The Math Club will be spending two different days cleaning the wellness trail.

November 2 Blood Drive
November 2 Blood Drive BY JASON HOGUE | NOV 1, 2021
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 1, 2021 Contact: Jason Hogue, Director of Marketing and Communications, 402-872-2429 Peru, Nebraska - The American Red Cross will host a blood drive on the Peru State Campus on Tuesday, November 2. The drive will be held in the Live Oak Room at the Student Center and run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. When you give blood, you help cancer patients, trauma patients, sickle cell patients, burn patients and patients with chronic diseases. There are two types of blood donations you can give at the drive, whole blood and power red. According to their website at RedCrossBlood.org, "Whole blood is the most flexible type of donation. It can be transfused in its original form, or used to help multiple people when separated into its specific components of red cells, plasma and platelets." "During a Power Red donation, you give a concentrated dose of red cells, the part of your blood used every day for those needing transfusions as part of their care. This type of donation uses an automated process that separates your red blood cells from the other blood components, and then safely and comfortably returns your plasma and platelets to you." The Red Cross is currently going through a blood shortage, and needs donations, particularly Type O blood. According to their website, "The need for blood is constant and only volunteer donors can fulfill that need for patients in our community. Nationwide, someone needs a unit of blood every 2 to 3 seconds and most of us will need blood in our lifetime." To schedule an appointment to give, visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter PeruNE to schedule an appointment. Walk-in appointments will also be accepted. ###

Peru State College to Recognize First Generation College Day
Peru State College to Recognize First Generation College Day BY JASON HOGUE | NOV 1, 2021
Peru, Nebraska - Peru State College will recognize the third annual national First Generation College Day on November 8, the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965. To celebrate first generation members of our campus community -- students, staff and faculty -- are invited to make and proudly wear an “I’m First-Gen” button. Stop in the Student Success Services (SSS) offices in the lower level of the CATS Building to make your button and enjoy some freshly popped popcorn starting at 12:30 pm. A first generation college student is defined as a student who is raised in a household where neither custodial parent has earned a bachelor’s degree. Without college educated parental role models, first generation college students may be challenged by an unexpected level of academic rigor in their classes, by unfamiliar words, customs, and traditions, or by feelings of isolation or imposter syndrome that threaten their persistence to graduation. Peru State has resources to support first generation students including the TRIO SSS program. Located in the basement of CATS, SSS supports its members from their arrival on campus to graduation. First generation faculty and staff across campus can share their own journey as a first generation student college student and how they achieved academic success. Look for members of the campus community with a “I’m First-Gen” button on November 8 and ask them about their journey. According to the TRIO SSS Director, Dr. Vicky Jones, “Over half of new freshmen at Peru State College are first generation college students. The College creates an environment where all student can graduate if they are willing to accept help.” If you are or know of a student who is struggling this semester, come to the CATS building for assistance. If you don’t know who to ask or where to go, come to the lower level of CATS and let SSS help direct you. The Pellin Institute describes the Higher Education Act of 1965, "The HEA created grants, loans and other programs to help students acquire education beyond secondary school. The Talent Search program, then called Contracts to Encourage the Full Utilization of Educational Talent, was created in the Higher Education Act of 1965. Today, all TRIO programs are authorized under the amended law." ###

Peru State alums join first all-Black crew to officiate an NSAA playoff semifinal game BY JASON HOGUE | NOV 22, 2021 Photo courtesy of KMTV.
Omaha, Neb. - Two Peru State alums, Fred Whitted and Skyler Johnson, were part of the historic first NSAA semifinal game officiated by an all-black crew. The crew was part of the Metro Football Officials Association. Fred Whitted told KMTV, "The moment I put on these stripes, it was always the, 'What if, what does it look like, what it could be?' To be a part of what is now is an amazing accomplishment.'" "If I could tell anybody anything, get into officiating, get into the rule book. Some of these players, can you imagine the knowledge base they would have if they knew the exact rules we were using to officiate?" Skyler Johnson added, "Football, baseball — this should be in all sports. Representation matters." Whitted also told KMTV"that he would like to start an officiating clinic to teach kids the rules of the game to help them on the field." The complete story can be found at KMTV 3. As founders of the Black Student Union, Whitted and Johnson are no strangers to historic representation. ###

Curtis Cogswell creates legacy with McCool Junction
Curtis Cogswell creates legacy with McCool Junction Dr. Curtis Cogswell sits in his office with all of the memories he has made during the 19 years of being with McCool Junction. “When I walk out here, the picture boards are going with me,” Cogswell said. “The pictures are mine. I will tell the school board I will pay for new bulletin boards. I can’t just take the pictures down and put them in a box.” Photograph courtesy of News-Times/Blythe Dorrian
McCool Junction — 19 years ago, there was a concern that McCool Junction would have to close its doors when its K-12 population dropped to 148. However, with community support and people like Curtis Cogswell, the school has almost doubled in size today. “My first year here I walked into the gym, and I told the maintenance person that the gym needed to be painted,” Cogswell said. “He asked me who was going to paint it, and I told him to buy the paint because I would start it. The first night, my wife and I started painting the gym.” Cogswell said two seniors stopped when they saw them painting. “They asked us if we needed help, and we said sure,” Cogswell said. “By the weekend, you should have seen how many people were helping. The gym was painted in a week.” Curtis Cogswell originally grew up on a farm in Friend. His parents were farmers who encouraged him to do something he loved. “When I was going to school, I knew I wanted to do something with people,” Cogswell said. Cogswell attended Peru State to become a teacher. He received his master’s degree from University of Nebraska at Kearney, and he attended Texas Tech for training to be a superintendent. After starting as a superintendent at McCool, he went back to get a doctorate from Seton Hall. “I started out in a small school called Chester-Hubbell-Byron. Then, I went to Elm Creek and on to Kearney. From Kearney, I went to Lubbock, Texas. From Lubbock, I went to McCool Junction. All 19 of my superintendent years have been at McCool.” Both Cogswell and his wife were involved in the Lubbock School District. She was a teacher, and he was a principal. “We knew we wanted to get back to Nebraska to raise our children in a smaller community,” Cogswell said. “When the job opened in McCool Junction, we knew where it was since we were both from the area. It has been a blessing to be here ever since.” The entire K-12 population is housed in one building at McCool Junction. “You get to know the kids from the start. The seniors know the elementary students,” Cogswell said. “The elementary kids look up to them. I’m blessed because both of my sons went to school here. My daughter-in-law went here, too. I am proud to have a representation of my family here.” Cogswell said he puts responsibility on the older students to take care of the younger students. Each week, he has an assembly with the juniors and seniors to talk about the week. “When I was in Lubbock, I was in an assembly where each grade of junior high filled an auditorium. I couldn’t do that. They only had assemblies once a year.” At McCool, Cogswell said, even the elementary and middle school students have an assembly once a month. “They get special recognition,” Cogswell said. “We recognize their birthdays. When students say where they’re going to college, we celebrate that as well. It truly is a family.” Cogswell said that it’s special when alumni come back to visit. He has gotten several invitations to weddings, and past students often want to come back and talk with him. “Kids who graduate from here can do anything,” Cogswell said. “We have doctors and lawyers. I have a kid who is in the Secret Service, and we have a kid who can do lung transplants. On the flip side, we have had great electricians and plumbers. People say you can’t do things because you’re from a small school. Yes, you can. You can do anything you want.”

Curtis Cogswell creates legacy with McCool Junction
Cogswell said that his biggest accomplishment isn’t about him; it is about the community of McCool. “This community makes believers out of you,” Cogswell said. “Even though there were challenges, the community fought. They all said we are going to be all right. We’ve been in situations where we had to slow growth because we grew too fast. Every challenge that we are given, we are going to rise and meet it.” Cogswell announced that he was retiring last fall. Even though he said he was hesitant about it at first, his wife taught at McCool with him for his last year. “On my last day of school, I went up to my wife’s room,” Cogswell said. “I told her I had to leave. I couldn’t stay for the teacher lunch. I broke down in tears because this has meant the world to me. It’s become part of my life. You know you fell in love with the right profession when it’s your last day and you’re sobbing.” This fall, Cogswell is going to be an assistant professor at Wayne State University. He will teach people preparing to becoming superintendents and principals. Cogswell said an important thing he has learned is knowing when it’s the right time to pass leadership on to the next generation. He said the school board at McCool was the best he has worked with. “It’s hard to find another school district that has doubled its size and almost doubled its facilities with private donations. It’s almost unheard of. No one asks us if we are going to close anymore.” Cogswell said he has no doubt that teaching was his calling, and that he hopes he has inspired students. “I can proudly say in my 35 years in public education that I have done something I have loved my entire life. The only thing that I regret is that the time went too fast.” ### Curtis Cogswell is a Peru State alumnist, we're excited for Cogswell to continue his journey in education at Wayne State.
