April 2022 a monthly feature of the Northwest Observer Eddie Wentz was thrilled when this pileated woodpecker recently visited his Oak Ridge home (it had been about five years since the bird’s last appearance!). The pileated woodpecker is one of the largest, most striking birds on the continent; it is distinguished by the bold black and white stripes down its neck and its flaming red crest. The nest holes these woodpeckers make offer crucial shelter to many species, including swifts, owls, ducks, bats and pine martens. Gemma, a 2-year-old giant schnoodle (half giant schnauzer and half standard poodle), is sad to see winter go. Gemma’s human said she loves cold weather and never misses a chance to play or roll around in the snow.

Harley, a 7-year-old bichon, loves relaxing and getting his picture taken. Harley’s owner, Denise Tilley, said her husband passed away from cancer five years ago and Harley has been there for her, keeping her company and making her smile. “I just love him,” Tilley said.

Echolocation, nicknamed “Echo,” is a 6-year-old black lab/pit bull mix with a crazy personality. Her hobbies include barking to come inside only to be let in and start barking to go back outside, digging around in the back yard for buried treasure and eating any food in her line of sight. And, as shown here, she will gladly challenge you in a battle of body slam.
