NW GUILFORD – Replacement of Northwest Guilford Middle School and construction of a northwest Guilford aviation high school may be edging closer to reality. The $1.7 billion school bond approved by voters last May will be used to pay for capital projects. As a first step, the county’s Board of Education has earmarked $228 million for management and design of nearly 40 school projects countywide. Management and design costs for replacing Northwest Middle are projected at $7.5 million, according to Guilford County Schools (GCS) estimates. The price tag for managing and designing construction of the Northwest Area Aviation High School is estimated at $12 million. In addition, GCS has appropriated $48 million in management and design spending for a category described as “deferred maintenance, technology, safe schools, educational adequacy and athletics.” Those funds “will pay for improvements at every GCS school,” according to a statement issued by the district in May.

NEWS in brief Preview: Oak Ridge Town Council meeting, Sept. 1 by CHRIS BURRITT

OAK RIDGE – Oak Ridge Town Council plans to consider renting space in Town Hall to Envirolink Inc., operator of the town’s new municipal water system. A resolution calls for the lease or rental of the southeastern corner of Town Hall. According to a sketch of the space, it will serve as an office for Envirolink’s staff to conduct business, such as collecting monthly payments from customers who want to pay in person. In June, the council voted to set fees and charges for users of the town’s water system. The first customers of the system will be homeowners in Honeycutt Reserve, a subdivision under development on Bunch Road.The council also plans to recognize former council member Doug Nodine, who died July 23 (see related article below). It will also honor longtime council member and former mayor pro tem, Roger Howerton, for his contributions to Oak Ridge. In other business, the council plans to appoint Todd Hall as an alternate to the Water Advisory Committee. It will also consider reappointing Phyllis Anders to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Patti Paslaru to the Planning and Zoning Board. The council will also consider approving an update of the town’s 2017 study of staff compensation and job classifications. Diagnostic Radiology and Imaging (DRI), which operates three centers in Greensboro, plans to expand into the space formerly occupied by Southern States Cooperative store at N.C. 150 and Lake Brandt Road in Summerfield. The building has been vacant since Southern States closed the store in July 2020, after a spokesperson for the Richmond, Virginia-based company said the store had not yielded a profit in any of its 14 years of operation in Summerfield.Thesiteplan for DRI Lake Brandt has been approved by the town of Summerfield, according to town planner Brad Rentz. A “DRI coming soon” sign and two banners have recently been placed at the building at 6199 Lake Brandt Road.

Construction of DRI Lake Brandt is scheduled to start in November or December, with the center becoming operational about a year later, according to Kelli Collins, DRI’s practice manager. The center will enable Greensboro Imaging patients living in the Summerfield area to receive care closer to home, Collins said. DRI Lake Brandt will offer a range of diagnostic imaging services, such as mammograms, computerized tomography (CT) scans and ultrasounds. Until the latter stage of his illness, Nodine enjoyed starting many mornings gathered with friends at Bistro 150 in Oak Ridge Commons. During his six years on the council, Nodine, a conservative, often cast the lone vote against projects – such as initial steps in establishing a municipal water system – that he thought put taxpayers’ money at Nodinerisk.was an active member of the Oak Ridge Lions Club for almost 20 years, and served as the club’s treasurer for some of that time. A commercial and residential developer by profession, he helped found and served as president of Preservation Oak Ridge. In that role, he led the restoration of the historic Ai Church on N.C. 68 and Alcorn Road. Nodine is survived by his wife, Cathy, son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Sunshine, four grandchildren, sister Nancy Sudol and niece Sara SudolGarcia, according to his obituary.

First, let’s talk about the rides and entertainment.TC’sAmusement Rides out of Rock Hill, South Carolina, will set up and operate 10 carnival rides, two of which will be new to RidgeFest. Younger children will especially enjoy the fun house, inflatable slide, taxi jet and choo-choo train.

“Food-wise, we lost vendors last year in the 11th hour because of COVID, so some of the lines were really long,” Floss said. He’s hoping the addition of more vendors this year will shorten hungry attendees’ wait time.

The event now draws thousands of kids of all ages to the town park every year over a span of three days. Due to COVID, RidgeFest wasn’t held in 2020, but came back strong last“PeopleSeptember.came back with a vengeance last year,” Floss said in an interview earlier this week. “The number of people attending was way beyond previous years.” With the 13th RidgeFest approaching on Sept. 8, 9 and 10, Floss says he’ll be ready for large crowds again, with more carnival rides and activities, more food and drink vendors, and more designated parking.

OAK RIDGE – RidgeFest, a muchanticipated community festival held annually in Oak Ridge Town Park, has come a long way since the early 2000s, when the Merchants of Oak Ridge (MOR) had the idea to host a one-day event with old-fashioned games and activities geared toward younger children. With an infusion of unbridled energy and enthusiasm, Oak Ridge resident and longtime MOR member Randy Floss took the helm 15 years ago and under his leadership, RidgeFest evolved.

A 14-animal carousel will be offered for the first time this year, appealing to kids of all ages. Other popular rides will include the ferris wheel, musical chair swings, Round Up, Tempest and the “Spinner” (also new this year). But carnival rides aren’t the only fun things to do at RidgeFest. There will be performances by Destination Arts’ dancers Thursday evening, live music in the park’s amphitheater Friday and Saturday evenings, a cruise-in Friday evening and a MOR Marketplace on Saturday. But that’s still not all. Also on Saturday, The Summit Church-Oak Ridge will be set up in a large, fencedin area near the Merchants’ midway, where they’ll be throwing a foam party for What’skids. a foam party, you might ask? Imagine a heap of sudsy bubbles that you can run through (it’s been described as a “bubble bath without the water”). Heads up: kids may get a little damp, but there will be towels for them to dry off.

“I told her, it’s a lot of work,” Newsom said. “And she said, ‘I’m a farm girl. I know how to work!’” Fast-forward 40 days from when the pumpkin was planted in July – and a lot of steps and work in between – and with the help of some friends, the pumpkin was transported to Bi-Rite last Newsomweek.said Mitzi did indeed prove herself to be a hard worker, and she and Travis did as much as possible to help the pumpkin thrive.

“It’s been a lot of fun to see people trying to guess how much it weighs, and especially the kids,” Wrenn said. Come Oct. 30, the pumpkin will be wheeled away to Brenner Children’s Hospital for Howard to work his magic one more time.

Growing a pumpkin that weighs hundreds … and hundreds… of pounds takes a lot of work. Just ask Gail Newsom, who has raised plenty of “big ones” in his 78 years.Abutcher by trade, Newsom said before he and his wife moved to Kernersville several years ago, he enjoyed raising big pumpkins for a hobby.

“We lived in Surry County at the time,” Newsom said. “I had sun in the morning and shade in the afternoons, and we had cooler weather there.” Conditions must have been right, because Newsom grew some prizewinningTwenty-fivepumpkins.years ago, he took a 357-pound pumpkin to the Dixie Classic Fair and won first prize. “Back then, if you won, you were the man!” he said. He said he and his wife used to travel all over the state and beyond to pumpkin weigh-offs. More than a few times, he said he came back with a 1st place ribbon, and sometimes cash, too. The biggest pumpkin he ever grew was 948 pounds. “I took it to a weigh-off in Raleigh and won $1,200!” Newsom said.About 18 years ago, Newsom was approached by Danny Howard, a pumpkin carver, who asked him to donate a big pumpkin to Brenner Children’s Hospital for Howard to carve for the kids at Halloween. Newsom quickly agreed, and a 17-year-tradition began from there. Newsom figured his pumpkin growing days were behind him –until his Bi-Rite co-worker, Mitzi (Southern) Lovern, asked if he would help her grow a big pumpkin this year. Her parents own a former dairy farm in Stokesdale, where she said they could grow it.

Within days, the crew had begun preparations for launching the Mobile Makeover project. They spent the first several months of this year promoting the project, raising funds and acquiring sponsors to “adopt” the Businesses,mobiles.nonprofits and individuals rallied to fund and oversee the refurbishment of 10 mobiles. Refurbishing the other 13 mobiles was funded by donations from individuals and businesses, with the PTSO overseeing the work. A small group of students, parents, community members and even a few teachers volunteered hours of sweat equity to see the project through. Besides the time spent on coordinating the project, Stallings personally contributed many hours of physical labor, including helping move furniture in and out of the mobiles and cleaning them after they had been refurbished. She expressed gratitude to all who helped make the project successful, including her hus band, Wes, and their three daughters, Eliza, 18, and twins Morgan and Lindsay, 15. “When I took this on, my family took it on as well,” she said. “They may have hated every minute of it, but they did it because Mama said, ‘we’ve got to get it done.’”

Within a year, the PTA raised over $25,000 to address the problem by installing a glass wall in the school’s front entrance.

After that, she tackled the task of improving school“Oaksecurity.Ridge was wide open, with complete access through the front of the building,” Stallings said. “Anyone could walk in without being noticed.”

Then she smiled and added, “I’m just very grateful that my family has been so tolerant of my shenanigans, and they love me anyway.”

When her children transitioned to Northwest Middle School, Stallings also did a stint there as PTSO Besidespresident.volunteering at local schools, Stallings volunteered with the Junior League of Greensboro for 13 years and served on the board of Greensboro Science Center, where she was also a volunteer coor dinator. In addition, she organized the biannual children’s consignment sale at Friendly Baptist Church in Greensboro for nine years, and until recently, served on Oak Ridge Swim Club’s board.

After reading a “Parade of Homes” magazine she picked up while at the beach last October, Stallings immediately texted a core group of friends – Amanda Boothby, Michelle Gee, Erica Gullickson, Susan Kaczman and Kristen Law – whom she said are always supportive of her “out-of-the-box” thinking.

Case in point: the massive Mobile Makeover proj ect recently completed at Northwest High School, in which 23 mobile classrooms were refurbished thanks to an initiative led by the school’s PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student Organization). Stallings, a Summerfield resident, was the school’s PTSO president when the project was launched. It was her idea to garner community support to refur bish the shabby, neglected mobile classrooms and create a cleaner, healthier and more inviting learning environment for students and teachers.

The Mobile Makeover project is only one of many school projects Stallings has spear headed. In 2011, she volunteered to serve as president of Oak Ridge Elementary’s PTA (Parent Teacher Association), and remained president for another three years. Her first major project as PTA president? To remove a telephone pole and wire from the middle of the kindergarten playground.

On Sunday, Aug. 28, Hazel Weeks did something very few people will ever do – celebrated her 106thWeeks’birthday.daughter, Betty Stantliff, son, A.C. Weeks, and other family members gathered at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale, where Weeks has lived for the last several years, to honor this very memorable milestone. Countryside staff arranged a surprise to make Weeks’ birthday even more special. A massive, personalized happy birthday sign made from individual letters and graphics was set up across the lawn at the entrance to the facility. At night, the colorful collection is made visible with floodlighting. Casey and Bryan Crossan’s son, Conner, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer) in 2016 when he was 9 years old and in the third grade at Oak Ridge Elementary. Conner passed away from this disease in 2018 at the age of 11. “When we came home on hospice, our neighbors had gold bows on their mailboxes as a show of love and support. After being in the hospital in Cleveland for a month, the gold ribbons felt like everyone was hugging us,” Casey said. “I knew then that we could use their act of solidarity as a fundraiser to help change childhood cancer.”

“Families in our area have limited access to food pantries and feeding centers because most programs are in more densely populated areas and transportation and time can be an issue,” a statement from the nonprofit reads. During the school year, the backpack ministry provides all studentsfood-insecureenlisted in its program with supplemental shelf-stable food for the weekend. Additional food is supplied for school breaks as well as special meals and treats for holidays such as Christmas and“WithoutEaster. this food, many of these students would return to school hungry,” the nonprofit states. Basically, here’s how the program works: To ensure children are not embarrassed, elementary school students served by Guilford Backpack Ministry have a weekly bag of food slipped into their bookbags by their school counselor or social worker while the children are out of the classroom. The child’s teacher is also given five individually wrapped snacks for snack time the following school week, such as granola bars, peanut butter crackers, cereal bars and goldfish crackers. Since older students are especially uncomfortable with the possibility that friends might see them receive food donated by others, the schoolstudent’scounselor, social worker or program director arranges a time for parents to pick up the food each month (these students receive the same amount of food as the elementary students).

“BLY.” Wake Forest University (then College) was located in Wake Forest, North Carolina, north of Raleigh, until it moved to Winston-Salem in 1956. Who the ring belonged to and how it came to be in Oak Ridge’s town park remained a mystery for many years. Edwards asked around and posted his find on Craigslist, but no one came forward to claim the ring. So, he placed it in his desk drawer and forgot about it. The memory of the ring was sparked while Edwards was recently sorting through his parents’ belongings after their deaths. He dug the ring out and again posted it on Craigslist. But he also sent me an email, hoping that as Oak Ridge’s town clerk and a lifelong resident, I might be able to help. Not knowing “BLY,” I posted the information on the Town’s Facebook pages. Within hours, people responded. Some combed through old Wake Forest yearbooks and graduation lists. Deputy Clerk Ashley Royal reached out to a friend, Elizabeth McIver, who works at Wake Forest. She and another Wake Forest employee, Sara Gravitt, unearthed information on Barbara Lake Young Aderholt, a 1953 graduate. Unfortunately, their digging also found the 2010 obituary of Aderholt, then living in Birmingham, Alabama.

Class ring ﬁ nds its way home after 50 years

Tysinger and her sister and brotherin-law, Rebecca and Doug Stafford, met Edwards at Oak Ridge Town Hall on Aug. 5. The Staffords had met as students at Oak Ridge Military Academy (she was among the first class of female cadets to graduate from the school when women were readmitted in 1971) and now live in Concord, North Carolina. Although Barbara had visited Oak Ridge, she had never lived here. A biology teacher, she was a master gardener, an active Daughters of the American Revolution member, and loved horseback riding. She and friend Gladys Young, a longtime Northwest High School English teacher, spent much time riding this area’s wooded trails and open farmland – apparently, it was during one of these rides that she lost the “Shering. was just brokenheart-when she lost it,” Rebecca Stafford said. “It was a major loss,” which their mother still lamented a few years before her death. Along with the ring, Tysinger and Stafford learned of another unusual connection to Edwards. When Edwards mentioned his childhood in Jamestown, the sisters recalled also living there (their father, who worked in the textile industry, was often transferred for his work, requiring the family to move every few housesonlytheySurprisingly,years).livedafewapart, and remembered each other’s families and other neighbors.

With the ring back to its rightful owners, Tysinger and Stafford said they couldn’t wait to share the find with their other sister, the guardian of their father’s Wake Forest class ring.

When asked what would happen to the ring, Tysinger didn’t hesitate.

“I’ve got Mama’s jewelry box. It’ll probably rest there awhile,” she said.

Following the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the armed conflict that began in 2003 with the United States invading Iraq, Denny was called to active duty. When Summerfield native Joe Denny was considering ways to honor and help those who have served our country in the armed forces, it didn’t take long before he landed on the Wounded Warrior Project. When the staff came to work at the Greensboro Science Center (GSC) on the morning of Monday, June 20, there was a surprise waiting for them. Usha, the center’s red panda, had given birth overnight. Weighing in at a mere .2 pounds, Ravi was a tiny bundle of fur. Ravi is not the first baby red panda to be born at the GSC.

Ravi requires interaction as well, which he gets through playing with stuffed animals and moving around in his environment. This is to make sure we’re doing the best for him and that he is being raised as normally as possible.”Withhelp from his caregivers, Ravi has gotten stronger and was moved to the Shearer Animal Hospital in July, where he can be observed through a hospital window. At first, he spent a lot of time sleeping and there wasn’t too much to see, but these days he’s more active.

“Two years ago, Usha had two cubs, but she killed them,” said Amanda Bissert, terrestrial curator and safety coordinator. “This can be a pretty common occurrence, especially with red pandas.”Toprevent this from happening again, the decision was made, in conjunction with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) coordinators, to take the cub from his mother and hand-rear him by a designated care team. Kelly Rauch, GSC Red Panda String Lead, works with four others, including Bissert, to make sure the cub thrives. This is no small task, especially during the cub’s infancy.

Initially, Ravi was bottle-fed every three hours and spent the night at team members’ homes until he was able to go longer between feedings. Bissert said Ravi is now up to just over three pounds and eats only four times a day.

• In very cold temperatures, red pandas can become dormant, lowering their metabolic rate and raising it every few hours as they wake up to look for food. This allows them to use very li�le energy so they need less food. They also have temperature-regula�ng behaviors, such as curling into a �ght ball and wrapping their tails around them like a blanket to conserve body heat in the cold. And, in warmer temperatures, red pandas stretch out on branches and pant to lower their body temperature.

• Red pandas are not related to giant pandas (which are bears), but are cousins of raccoons, weasels and skunks. Their scien�ﬁc name, Ailurus fulgens, actually derives from Greek ailouros, meaning cat, and La�n fulgens, meaning bright, shining.

• Red pandas are small in size, weighing between 6 to 18 pounds.

• Red pandas are carnivores, meaning their diges�ve tract is meant to digest meat. However, they actually very rarely eat meat. A red panda’s diet is about 95% bamboo. Because they s�ll have the diges�ve system of a carnivore, a red panda has to eat 20 to 30% of its body weight in bamboo each day. That’s approximately 20,000 bamboo leaves every single day! They will also occasionally eat mushrooms, roots, nuts, eggs, insects and small mammals.

• Red pandas are very good climbers! They use their tails to help keep their balance and use their sharp, retractable claws and their ability to turn their feet 180 degrees to grip slippery tree branches.

ASH Meet Ash, the annoying little brother of Red Dog Farm’s newest puppies. But when you look into those eyes, does he really look like trouble? Ash is the puppy who is always trying to get attention from his siblings and human friends (between those necessary breaks for a good nap, of course). It’s almost as if he knows everyone loves his sweet face!

JOY Joy, a 22-year-old healthy beauty, came to us from a neglect situation. She is very kind and enjoys people and attention. Joy is an easy keeper, stands great for the farrier and stands calmly and quietly when being groomed. We don’t know her riding history, so considering her age she will be retired and can be used as a companion. She gets along great with others and does well guiding her blind equine friend in the pasture.

Adult red pandas are relatively small and typically only weigh between six and 18 pounds. Usha weighs a little over 14 pounds and Ravi’s dad, Tai, is closer to 15 pounds. These cute creatures make their homes in high-altitude, cool temperature bamboo forests in the Sichuan, Yunnam and Ziang provinces in China. Unfortunately, because of habitat loss, human interference and poaching, the number of red pandas has been shrinking to the point that they are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It’s estimated there are less than 10,000 red pandas in the wild, and possibly as few as 2,500.Asaway to educate visitors about the red panda and its dwindling population, GSC will celebrate International Red Panda Day on Saturday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Not only can visitors see Ravi, Usha and Tai, but they can participate in a scavenger hunt, learn more about the panda’s adaptations, diet and conservation efforts and even try walking like a red panda. Paintings created by the GSC’s red pandas will be available for purchase, with proceeds going toward red panda conservation. “He is a very fast eater, so feedings will not be very long, but we will have an educator answering questions at that time,” Rauch said. “As he ages and is awake longer, there will be more opportunities for visitors to see the panda team interacting with him.”

Bissert said within the next few months, bamboo and biscuits will be added to Ravi’s diet. “Red pandas eat bamboo naturally,” she said, noting the biscuits are loaded with extra vitamins. “Pandas really like grapes, and we use those, along with apples, for treats, especially for training.”Thegrapes came in handy during Usha’s pregnancy, when she needed ultrasounds.“Wetrained her to put her paws on wood and ignore the jelly on her belly (by giving her grapes as treats),” Bissert said. “She’s very food motivated and was great. She really didn’t care what we were doing as long as she was getting grapes.”

“This year we’re a K-8 charter school and we’re full with a waiting list,” Harris said. To help ensure students and staff remain safe, the school has added a safety team that consists of parent volunteers who are either retired or off-duty police officers, firefighters, EMS respondedrs or have served in the military.“They’re on campus every day looking for areas that might pose a danger,” the principal said.

Harris noted there are many new things happening at the school this year, foremost of which is the addition of the eighth grade. The school started in 2020 with K-6 grades and added seventh grade last year.

After serving two years as assistant principal, Michele Harris took over as Revolution Academy’s principal last March and is excited as she begins her first full year in this position. An educator for 27 years, Harris has K-8 teaching experience in North Carolina, Kentucky and Texas. She was also instrumental in helping start Revolution Academy, which is now in its third year.

Eleven new staff members have joined Revolution’s team, including eighth grade teachers, tutors, teacher assistants and a librarian.

Wheat completed her master’s in educational leadership at High Point University in 2013, then served as assistant principal at Northwest Middle School. For the last seven years, she served as principal of Johnson Street Global Studies, a magnet school located in High Point. Wheat said she looks forward to introducing students to what’s new at NGMS this year. “We are excited about our new MakerSpace, which will be located in our media center and is funded by our awesome PTSA,” she said. “We’re in the process of finalizing furniture purchases, technology upgrades, and hands-on manipulatives that will allow students to build and explore.

Martin said a “really new and cool” project is a school store being operated by the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Club, under the direction of teacher Heather Johnson. “I am sure our students will love being able to shop for school supplies and other fun items,” Martin said. “Stash 101 is a virtual economy the CTE Department will use across all of its courses, and students will use their virtual dollars to purchase items from the school store.” Martin is happy to be a part of the Viking family, and said she looks forward to staff, students and parents working together to make great things happen this school year.

“In an emergency, moments matter,” GCS Chief Operating Officer Michelle Reed said in a statement this summer. The upgrade ensures “we have the proper infrastructure in place to notify law enforcement, schools, parents and district leaders in a timely and uniform manner.”

Last school year, authorities confiscated five handguns carried by students in schools, according to Richey. They also collected 12 BB guns and numerous pocket and kitchen knives.

The touchless scanning devices being installed in high schools countywide illustrate the vulnerabilities of even the latest technology.

In another security move, the county’s Board of Education voted last month to upgrade the district’s communication system. The board entered a contract to replace the server-based system with a cloudbased one, providing for district-wide notifications via text, email and phone calls in the event of an emergency.

The safety of their children in school increasingly weighs on parents. For most, it’s a risk they must accept, similar to an adult driving a car, according to Hall.

GCS’ investment in security coincides with increasing gun sales in North Carolina and nationwide, according to Mike Richey, the district’s executive director of safety and“Theresecurity.are more guns available and our jurisdictions are reporting that more guns are being stolen,” Richey told the school board in June. “Greensboro police reported that more guns were stolen out of vehicles last year than ever before.”

Rising school violence elsewhere in the country leads to more training and precautions to protect students and staff in Guilford County by CHRIS NW/NORTHERNBURRITTGUILFORD –Despite heightened security measures, teachers, students and their parents can’t help but feel more anxious over safety in the classrooms, where violence was once unheard-of.

“You know you could be in an accident, but you drive your car every day,” he said. “You can mitigate the risk. But you can never fully eliminate it.”

Schools open with added steps to protect students, staff

As school violence has increased nationwide, Hall said, “the mindset has shifted. It’s a question of when it might happen, not if it will happen.”

As Guilford County Schools (GCS) resumed classes earlier this week, the installation of handgun-detecting scanners is underway in the district’s high schools. The technology is the latest precautionary step being taken amid rising gun violence in schools nationally. The most recent incident occurred three months ago, when an 18-year-old shot and killed 19 students and two teachers in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Like going through a metal detector, people walk between the panels of the scanner, which detects the shape, size and density of items to determine the possible presence of firearms. People passing through can walk at normal speed, and they don’t have to take off their backpacks and empty their pockets when they go through the scanner, according to Richey.

In spite of those advantages over metal detectors, Richey said, the scanners serve as a deterrent only when people pass through them. That doesn’t prevent violence in parking lots and elsewhere at schools or by people who rush past security devices or enter through open doors, as was the case in the Uvalde, Texas, shooting.

“The No. 1 safety piece is the relationships between our children and a trusted adult,” he said. “That is by far what is going to keep our schools safe.” Engaging with students is one of the roles of the sheriff’s SROs, according to Hall.

De-escalation is one of the skills aimed at students “who are acting out. They’re having a horrible day. They’re not doing what their teachers and administrators want,” Hall said. “When we get involved, we try to bring that person’s behavior to an acceptable level so we don’t have to take any sort of enforcement action or lay hands on the student,” he said. Tactics for dealing with an active shooter in a school have shifted in the nearly quarter century since a shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, killed 13 people and wounded more than 20 others in April 1999. At the time, it was the worst high school shooting in U.S. history. Back then, some law enforcement agencies practiced “rapid deployment,” basically holding back the first officer on the scene until others arrived as backup. If the first officer were injured or killed, then he would be no good in the operation, said Hall, explaining the rationale for thatThatstrategy.response proved too slow in instances where a shooter acted quickly, leading to a new approach in recent years. SROs already in a school or officers first on the scene are “taught to move directly toward the sound of the gunfire and try to find and stop the threat,” Hall said. Even if gunfire has stopped, Hall said, officers “don’t have the time to sit and wait when you may have people dying inside of the classroom.”

At the same time, SROs are armed just like other deputies and can arrest students if a crime is committed, such as drug possession or assault, Hall said. Over the summer, SROs trained in areas ranging from dealing with active shooters to suicide prevention.

“A lot of focus these days is training that deals with mental illness, which is so prevalent in society,” Hall said.

The scanner “does not solve every security problem,” Richey acknowledged. The best deterrent to violence, he noted, is healthy relationships inside of schools, which can help detect mental health problems among students who may strike out violently.

“The investment by the community has been absolutely incredible,” Napper said. She said she understands why community leaders and parents are frustrated that units intended as a temporary solution to overcrowding have been in place for as long as 25 years.

Tillman is the school board’s representative for District 3, which includes Northwest middle and high schools and Oak Ridge, Pearce and Stokesdale elementary schools.

Based upon the conditions of the schools as determined by GCS’ consultant, Cooperative Strategies, the projects soon to get underway include the rebuilding of Claxton Elementary School and Kiser Middle School in Greensboro.

At the same time, those willing to donate money for their repairs can’t give directly to GCS or to individual schools, rather they would have to go through the county’s Board of Commissioners, Napper said, noting such donations would then be subject to auditing and other financial requirements.

Napper said projects funded by the $1.7 billion bond are going to benefit from GCS’ planning tied to the 2020 bond referendum “when we started from scratch.”

For years, frustration among northwestern Guilford parents at GCS has centered upon the deteriorating condition of mobile classrooms, particularly at Northwest high and middle schools.

The 2020 spending plan also earmarked nearly $10.7 million for the acquisition of land, including for the Northwest Middle School replacement, the Northwest aviation high school and a Northern area elementary school.

“What we can and can’t do comes down to legalities,” she said, adding she has told potential givers, “I’ve been through those trailers. I know the condition they’re in. But you can’t help in that“Iway.can genuinely see how parents feel frustration with that,” she said. “That breaks a lot of trust in the system.”

The facilities plan by Cooperative Strategies recommended construction of an elementary school in northern Guilford County, at an estimated cost of nearly $26.8 million.

However, the 2020 plan didn’t designate funds for improvements to existing schools in northwestern and northern Guilford County. When it does occur, the work will reportedly be aimed at relieving overcrowding and improving security and technology in schools.

The consultant also recommended improvements at Stokesdale, Summerfield, Oak Ridge and Pearce elementary schools, as well as Northern Guilford high and middle schools.

“When it comes to those mobiles, we’re caught in the crosshairs,” Napper said, explaining that despite the mobiles’ years of use, state education administrators still consider them to be temporary.

As a result, GCS is limited as to how much it can spend to refurbish them, she said.

Not all school projects in northwestern Guilford and northern Greensboro recommended by GCS’ 2019 master facilities plan are listed as part of the initial $228 million in management and design spending from the most recently approved bond this past May.

School board member Pat Tillman didn’t respond to texts or phone calls requesting his input for this article.

The $1.7 billion bond voters approved last May adds to the $300 million bond referendum approved in 2020 that targeted improvements at eight schools; construction at those schools is set to start as early as this fall.

Earlier this year, with no funding in sight from the district, the Parent, Teacher, Student Organization at Northwest Guilford High School launched the Mobile Makeover project. For its efforts, the PTSO raised nearly $500,000 in monetary, labor and material donations from the community for refurbishing 23 classrooms that had long been in a state of neglect. All donations went through the PTSO, versus the school or GCS.



Many of those law enforcement employees probably voted for your orange savior.  Northwest Observer for not correcting the gripe in the last issue which claimed the IRS will be hiring 87,000 armed enforcement agents, thanks to funding provided in the Inflation Reduction Act.

According to a statement released by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) this month, “It’s unbelievable that we even need to say this, but there are not going to be 87,000 armed IRS agents going door to door with assault weapons.”TheIRS and U.S. Department of Treasury have said the additional positions funded by the Inflation Reduction Act will be for a range of roles, with only a few hundred each year being special agents. IRS special agents, who are armed, make up a small percentage of the agency’s agents and they investigate criminal tax violations and other financial crimes such as money laundering, bank secrecy, national security and national defense matters.

Editor’s note: I accept full responsibility for not catching and responding to the word “armed” in the reader’s gripe. The Inflation Reduction Act signed by President Biden on Aug. 16 provides $80 billion to the Internal Revenue Service (over 10 years). Reportedly, the money will be used for operational improvements, customer service, systems modernization and increased enforcement – which will include hiring 87,000 new IRS agents. We’ve found no evidence to support a widely circulated rumor that all, or even a majority, of these new IRS agents will be armed.

Aug. 25 | An employee of Tobacco & Vape in Summerfield Village on U.S. 220 reported that between Aug. 24 at 12:10 a.m. and Aug. 25 at 12:15 a.m. an unknown suspect entered the business through an unlocked door and stole $4,552 in cash and $1,030 worth of office equipment including a black cash register and a black safe. Also on Aug. 24, an employee reported at 7:45 p.m. an unknown suspect shoplifted $2,416 worth of items including four canisters of CBD flower and six Jamaican Buzz cigarillos. Aug. 25 | An 18-year-old male was arrested in the 7600 block of Deboe Road in Summerfield (near I-73 N) for larceny. Aug. 27 | A woman at the MST trailhead on U.S. 220 N in Summerfield reported that between 11:45 a.m. and 1:33 p.m. an unknown suspect broke a window on her vehicle and stole a diaper bag and a purse with a wallet containing several gift cards and bank cards, several identifying documents and $5 in change.
