NW GUILFORD COUNTY – Among Randall “Randy” Gregg’s many loves were boating, capturing the stories of common people, helping those in need, writing about what he perceived as injustices – and riding his motorcycle.

Gregg, 44, owner of The Star newspaper, which he began publishing in the fall of 2013, died on the morning of April 25 at a Durhamarea intersection while riding his motorcycle. Traveling north on Davis Drive, Gregg failed to stop at a stop

Finishing what Committee explores options he started for trail segment A year later, Boston Marathon’s in the books for Clark Doggett by STEVE HUFFMAN SUMMERFIELD – Clark Doggett got around last week to finishing something he’d started a year earlier – the Boston Marathon. Doggett, 71, a Summerfield resident, was competing in the 2013 Boston Marathon when terrorists detonated bombs near the finish line, bringing the race to a halt. Doggett completed about 25 miles of the 26.2mile race, but wasn’t allowed to cross the finish line. That changed this year when he returned to Boston with his wife Jane, and daughter, Beth Kaplan.

by STEVE HUFFMAN SUMMERFIELD – Members of Summerfield’s Trails and Open Space Committee agree they want to avoid confrontations with property owners whose land will be directly affected by a proposed 2.6-mile trail route. At their monthly meeting on April 23, committee members unanimously backed a resolution giving Town Manager Scott Whitaker the OK to find someone to speak with those property owners about a proposed extension of the A&Y Greenway. The selected

individual would work to ease tensions and secure trail easements before the project proceeds. But finding the person to tackle the task won’t be an overnight process.
