According to the ALS website, donations have come from existing donors and 2.1 million new donors. The concept of the fundraiser is such a simple, and by some descriptions, a silly one. Just in case you have somehow

SUMMERFIELD – Not even the ALS Association could have foreseen what an incredible phenomenon the Ice Bucket Challenge which it introduced in late July would become. Last year, from July 29-Aug. 27, the association raised $2.7 million to help fight ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In that same time period this year, the global awareness campaign has raised $94.3 million to help fight ALS.

(Bottom) Pierina Cangialosi, a nurse who works on a neurology unit, was challenged by friend Michelle Gorman and took the challenge as well as donated to ALS. “I have had the privilege of working with ALS patients, and they always have a special place in my heart. I wanted to “go big” for them,” says Pierina.

managed to escape the latest rage, the Ice Bucket Challenge basically works like this: one person agrees to have a bucket of ice water dumped on their head while being videoed and challenging other people to do the same. Typically, those challenged have 24 hours to comply or make a donation to the ALS Association. For Tony Mullins and his family, the attention on ALS that has come as a result of the Ice Bucket Challenge has a very deep and personal meaning. In 2012, at age 47, Mullins, who family members say had always been a “picture of health,” began slurring his speech. A successful financial planning executive at the time, he was physically fit, kept his weight in check, and played golf twice a week. In fact, he had just recently gotten his golf handicap down
