Veterans share accounts of war, pride in country Committee seeking veterans willing to share stories about their military service

“The historical committee has as one of its projects to interview and tape stories that our veterans have to tell. Hopefully we can preserve a lot of the stories for future generations,” said Linda Southard, chair of the Summerfield Historical Committee. “We’re starting with WWII veterans, then Korean, Vietnam, and any that may be in service now or hopefully coming home soon.” Southard pointed out that getting these stories now, especially those of World War II veterans, is becoming urgent. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports World War II veterans are dying at a rate of 555 per day, and all their experiences are being lost with them.

Republicans gain key seats in U.S. Senate, House At the county level, Sheriff BJ Barnes reelected to another four-year term, Justin Conrad to fill retiring County Commissioner Linda Shaw’s seat in District 3
by PATTI STOKES NC/GUILFORD COUNTY – North Carolina voters turned out in record numbers for the midterm election on Nov. 4 – to the tune of 2,915,988 voters, or 44 percent of registered voters. In what was dubbed as the $100
million U.S. Senate race – and nationwide, the most expensive race in the Nov. 4 election, Thom Tillis (R) defeated incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan (D), by 1.67 percentage points; Tillis captured 48.87 percent of the 2,777,552 ballots cast in the North Carolina senatorial election compared to Hagan’s 47.2 percent.
Sean Haugh, a Libertarian, captured 3.74 percent of the vote. Many of the Northwest Observer readers who weighed in on Facebook attributed Tillis’ win as much to Hagan’s support of Obama, “out-of-control
