LILI RODRIGUEZ, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

It feels so good to say hello again.

It’s hard to believe that it has been two whole years since we last met here. Strangely, it feels as if PSIFF 2020 was both just yesterday and an eternity ago. The team here at the Palm Springs Film Society has kept busy with year-round member screenings and ShortFest, but we sure missed mounting this festival in 2021, and we’re endlessly grateful that we have you as an audience to return to.

So much has changed since January 2020. As such, this year’s festival looks different from previous editions. At the top of our priorities has been our commitment to mounting the truest form of the festival that we’ve all come to know and love while maintaining the safest environment possible. For us, that meant bypassing virtual screenings and figuring out a way to celebrate the movies together — appropriately — in front of the big screen.

In PSIFF tradition, our programmers have dedicated over a year to exploring the world and bringing you a vibrant selection of today’s international and local cinema. As always, you’ll find films that run the gamut — from feel-good fun to urgent, socially driven work. The world is everevolving and filmmakers are there to capture it all.

Although we’ve yet to put the pandemic behind us and continue to face new challenges, we’re grateful to have this moment together with you and want to make PSIFF 2022 a celebration of art and life. What better way to do so than with music and film? In the lineup you’ll find two sidebars that do just that: SOUND TRACK, featuring films to get you moving and humming along, and THE BIG SCREEN, featuring films that explore our favorite artform — the movies. And of course, there’s this year’s poster, with its happy and welcoming message.

I hope you can sense this celebratory feeling through the films we’ve selected this year and the festival we’ve planned for you. On behalf of the PSIFF team, welcome back.
