The Palm Springs International Film Festival's annual Film Awards returns live on Thursday, January 6 at the Palm Springs Convention Center for another unforgettable celebration of the year’s greatest achievements in filmmaking. For more than 30 years this can’t-miss kickoff to awards season has brought the world’s biggest actors,filmmakers and industry heavyweights to Palm Springs for the hottest eventon the city’s cultural calendar. This year’s honorees include some of the world’s most admired actors and filmmakers working at the height of their craft. Jane Campion has once again amazed audiences with her first feature film in more than a decade, the family psychodrama wrapped in a Western, The Power of the Dog, earningher Director of the Year honors. Kenneth Branagh and the marvelous, three generation ensemble cast of Belfast receive the Vanguard Award for the versatile filmmaker’s intimate coming-of-age story set amid the outbreak of sectarian violence in 1960s Northern Ireland.
A trio of today’s top actresses have made career highlights with their incredible,complex takes on three hugely iconic women: Desert Palm Achievement Award winner Jessica Chastain gets under the surface of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye; Spotlight Award winner Kristen Stewart embodies an embattled Princess Diana in Spencer; and Chairman’s Award recipient Jennifer Hudson mines the darkness that shaped Aretha Franklin inthe biopic Respect.
In one of the most poignant performances of her career, International Star Award honoree Penélope Cruz navigates the dramatic twists and turns a woman’s life takes following an unexpected pregnancy in longtime collaborator Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers. Andrew Garfield earns the Desert Palm Achievement Award for his inspired turn as influential Rent playwright Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick... Boom! And Will Smith, as the coach and father of future tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams (played by magnetic newcomers Demi Singleton and Saniyya Sidney), leads the Ensemble Performance Award-winning cast of the rousing true story, King Richard.
