DREAMS, FILMED ON LOCATION.
The City of PalmSprings, having played a starring role in some of Hollywood’s most iconic movies, proudly invites you to enjoy the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
MEMBERS
LETTER FROM THE FESTIVAL CHAIRMAN
Since we have not been together in person since our 2020 Festival, I take especially great pleasure in welcoming you to this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival. Gathering with our audiences in front of the big screen to collectively share the best new films the world has to offer takes on a renewed significance this year. The more than 130 films we will be showing, which were curated for this year’s program by artistic director Lili Rodriguez and her talented staff of programmers, will allow audiences to journey to 64 countries from every region of the world without ever leaving the Coachella Valley.
Our festival offers something to suit every filmgoer’s taste — from escapist comedies and edgeof-your-seat thrillers to deeply moving dramas and eye-opening documentaries. The festival is widely regarded throughout the industry as the festival that screens the most submissions to the Best International Feature Film category of the Academy Awards®. This year, once again, we’re bringing you a large selection of those films in our Awards Buzz program.
No festival would be complete without a taste of Hollywood, so we invite you to don your finest attire and celebrate with us in person at this year’s Film Awards, which opens the festival on Thursday, January 5 at the Palm Springs Convention Center. We’ll kick off this year’s awards season by honoring some of the biggest A-list movie stars and filmmakers in the world. It’s the only event in the valley where you can celebrate among Hollywood’s best and brightest, see the glitz and glamor of the red carpet with stars like Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell, Michelle Yeoh, Austin Butler, Michelle Williams and more Oscar® hopefuls, and enjoy a fabulous dinner in our elegantly decorated ballroom. And it’s all for a good cause, raising more than $2.5 million for the Palm Springs International Film Society’s year-round mission.
I want to thank our presenting sponsor, American Express®; our title sponsor, City of Palm Springs; and our Film Awards host Mary Hart and Entertainment Tonight for helping to make this one of the most exciting events in the world of film. Our major sponsors are IHG Hotels & Resorts and the Houston Family Foundation.
The Award Gala’s underwriters are Helene Galen, JoAnn McGrath, Sean McGrath, Jordan Schnitzer and myself. Our entire board of directors donates more than $1 million annually to this benefit for the Palm Springs International Film Society. It is an honor to support the vision and passion of our founder Sonny Bono, our past chairman, Earl Greenburg, and James R. and Jackie Lee Houston, who chaired this event for so many years.
We hope you join us in ringing in a very happy new year at the festival!
Matzner Chaiman of the BoardLETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear Film Lover,
If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen or will see our festival trailer. Creating the trailer with our partners at Stampede is always a fun project for us – the trailer is an element that helps set the tone for the kind of festival we want to mount, it helps set the mood. Our trailer song this year is called “It’s the Little Things” by Tim Garland and it proposes that happiness is simply made of just that – the little things. As the world opens up and we begin to enjoy those activities we took for granted in our pre-Covid world, I can’t help but think about all the little things we missed since we last mounted this festival in 2020. More than that, though, I am thrilled to experience all the little things that make this festival so special again.
There are many big and little things that go into making PSIFF happen. For us, it starts with the movies. Our programmers have dedicated almost a year to scouting the world for the 130+ films that make up this edition. This is our most thematically diverse year yet and I don’t believe you’ll find two movies that are alike. From light entertainment for casual nights out to urgent commentaries that beg for post-screening conversation and beyond, the cinema is there to capture it all.
In planning this edition, we were also inspired to look inward and around us and decided to bring on local designer, Tom Dolle, for the poster artwork that decorates this book and all of our marketing materials. Tom wanted to reflect Palm Springs. His design “uses angled planes to play on the idea of screens, with icons for film, sun, and of course palm trees. The interaction, overlap, multiple directions, and hard angles reflect the diversity and connections that a film festival brings together.” Those are just some of the things that make this event what it is.
As we head off into the 34th edition, I ask that as you navigate your way through the festival, that you please take note of and enjoy those “little things “ that feel inconsequential but are actually beautiful small moments that make it all so special. What are yours? Perhaps it’ll be reuniting with a festival friend you haven’t seen since PSIFF 2020. Maybe it’ll be making a new friend while waiting in line, bonding over a film you loved (or didn’t!). Maybe it’s the smell of newsprint and coffee as you pour over the Desert Sun guide highlighting the film schedule. And, of course, may we all sink into that glorious “little” moment where cinema comes to life on the big screen and everything else fades away.
Welcome back, we missed you.
Lili Rodriguez Artistic DirectorWelcome to Palm Springs for the 34th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival!
When then-mayor of Palm Springs Sonny Bono introduced the festival in 1989, he envisioned it as an annual celebration that would help put the city on the map and make it a year-round mustvisit destination for visitors from around the world.
Since then, it has become one of the largest in North America, growing from five days to 12 days, and attracting A-list celebrities.
Over that time, tourism, too, has grown in Palm Springs, bringing with it a host of new attractions, innovative restaurants, world-class art, and unique places to stay.
Whether this is your first time in Palm Springs or you’re a return visitor, I’m sure you’ll agree with us that it’s a destination “like no place else.”
We invite you to return soon.
Kimber Foster Director, Palm Springs Bureau of TourismPalm Springs is a playground with enduring beauty, a retro vibe and fun in the sun. A smalltown scale combined with urban sophistication is being rediscovered by a new generation of the young and hip who have fallen in love with this enclave of cool. From midcentury modern-style architecture to a stylish and bold new downtown experience, Palm Springs has retained a mix of historic charm and trend-setting design.
The city’s vibrant personality is being re-imagined to embrace a new energetic vibe.
We welcome visitors and residents with new stylish hotels, exquisite boutique inns, fashionable restaurants, chic shops and boutiques, and unique entertainment venues as well as welcoming public spaces for gathering, celebrating and relaxing. We invite you to stay and play with us here in Palm Springs.
Nona WatsonChief Executive Officer, Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce
On behalf of the hospitality and tourism community, welcome!
For more than three decades, the Palm Springs International Film Festival has drawn filmmakers and enthusiasts from around the world to celebrate the art of cinema and recognize some of the year’s best films and performances.
And just as the greatest movies entertain, enlighten, and move us, Greater Palm Springs connects with audiences — visitors — from the moment they arrive and press “play.” Our striking mountain ranges, endless horizon of swaying palm trees, and artistic spirit become the
backdrop for all who visit to create their own stories and find their very own oasis, whether it’s embarking on an outdoor adventure, traveling back in time through our midcentury modern architecture, or experiencing the vibrant local art scene.
We hope you enjoy the festival and can’t wait to welcome you back!

THE ENTERTAINER
Sculptor John Kennedy (1931 – 2004) is renowned by art lovers and collectors for his graceful bronze figures, which adorn parks, campuses and public buildings around the world. Two of his most famous sculptures are Spirit ofAudrey, dedicated to Audrey Hepburn and located at the UNICEF Headquarters in New York City, and The Entertainer, the official award statuette of the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
Inspired by a magazine article about court jesters, Kennedy created a life-size sculpture of a ball-juggling jester titled The Entertainer standing 7 feet 3 inches in 1995. In 1997, the Palm Springs International Film Festival began presenting festival winners with a scaled-down version of the lifesize, and it has been the official award ever since.
