Welcome From Chairman Chandi

On behalf of our board of directors, I would like to welcome you to the 2024 edition of the Palm Springs International ShortFest, America’s largest festival of short films. I am truly honored to lead this amazing gathering of young emerging and veteran filmmakers, actors, writers, and industry professionals who share a common, compelling interest in the magic and language of film.

This year’s edition is nothing short of extraordinary. ShortFest has been this country’s largest, most successful event of its kind for 30 years! This year, we received more than 6,300 film submissions from individual filmmakers representing 130 countries and territories. From this massive number, our programmers and screeners, led by our remarkable artistic director Lili Rodriguez, have selected the 310 shorts that will be screened at the Festival and will also be available for industry professionals in our marketplace.

We call ShortFest a $500,000 educational initiative because it gives emerging filmmakers the tools and relationships they need to advance in the industry. We not only provide filmmakers with the opportunity to see their work on the big screen, but we also provide them with seminars, master classes, and one-on-one meetings with agents, producers, and film festival programmers to educate them on what the industry expects from those seeking entry into the world of feature films.

Those lucky enough to be part of the Festival audience have the opportunity to see innovative pieces of cinema that have been created by the filmmakers of tomorrow at an extremely high level of excellence.

We host nightly parties for 600 or 700 filmmakers and industry members to network and build relationships with their peers. We also present cash awards for the best shorts in the festival. Five of these awards qualify films for Academy Award nominations. More than 100 ShortFest Films have gone on to receive Oscar nominations. Some have won awards.

Notable individuals who have made the leap from ShortFest to feature film success include Brie Larson, the Academy Award® winner from The Room, Ava DuVernay, nominated for a Golden Globe® for Selma and Jason Reitman, who was nominated for four Oscars® for Up in the Air and Juno. There are many more. We could not make this happen without the support of Regal Cinemas Palm Springs, who is hosting us for the entire festival.

I also want to thank our managing director, Rhea Woodson, who is responsible for organizing and operating the Festival, and a second mention for our incredible artistic director, Lili Rodriguez, and her talented team of programmers and screeners–all outstanding contributors to our success. And then there’s our amazing cast of volunteers, individual donors, and sponsors; without them, there would be no Palm Springs International ShortFest.

Most importantly, I want to thank you for giving us an audience.

Sincerely,

PSFILMFEST.ORG 5 Welcome

6 PALM SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL SHORTFEST | 2024
Jennifer Van Camp Programming & Education Manager Stephanie Pineda Programming Coordinator Rebecca Crompton Programming Intern

Hello Shortfesters!

Happy Birthday to us!

Over the last three decades, our little “festival that could” has cemented itself as a must-stop for filmmakers & cinephiles alike, growing largely organically through the word of mouth that alums and audiences have helped share. In an industry where bloated budgets and stifled creativity can sometimes feel rampant, ShortFest and festivals like it stand as spaces where fresh and daring work can be experienced, celebrating short film as a unique and powerful medium, capable of capturing the essence of storytelling with brevity and brilliance.

ShortFest is many things–a festival where art, politics, life, cinema & play all mingle. A place where shorts are king and the only rule is” the films have to be 40 minutes or under. There isn’t “one thing” that a short needs to be, and that’s how we like it. Despite their economic run times (or maybe because of it), short films have the power to convey profound messages, creating impactful and thought-provoking experiences, and leaving us craving more in the best way possible

This year, our programming team faced the Herculean task of selecting from 6,300+ submissions—a testament to the ever-growing enthusiasm and talent in the short film community. After countless hours of dedicated viewing, we are excited to present a selection of 310 films. These works span a myriad of genres and themes, from poignant dramas and wacky comedies to the delightfully surreal, the curious, and even the disturbing. A profound thank you goes to the filmmakers who have presented films at ShortFest over the last 30 years, and a welcome to those who are sharing the films we get to enjoy this edition.

For their boundless energy, time, and dedication, immense gratitude goes to our Board of Directors, our staff, and volunteers of the festival, who work tirelessly to bring it to life. To the sponsors and partners who graciously ensure the event has the resources it needs to thrive, we offer our humble and heartfelt thanks.

And of course, thank you to the awesome, adventurous audience who loves short films as much as we do.

Here’s to 30 (x100) more years, the ShortFest way!
