4 Palm Springs International ShortFest | 2017
WELCOME 2017 SHORTFEST CHAIRMAN’S LETTER On behalf of my board of directors, welcome to the wild cinematic journey we call the Palm Springs International ShortFest and Short Film Marketplace. Over the course of seven days, you’ll have an opportunity to view more than 337 short films from over 60 countries in the beautiful Camelot Theatres. But that’s really just a part of what ShortFest is all about. We call ShortFest a $500,000 educational initiative, but it’s even more than that. It’s also a networking opportunity for emerging filmmakers. We had more than 600 directors, writers, actors and young producers at ShortFest last year and people came away from it with jobs. Warner Bros. hired the director of a film called No Evil for an in-house writing job. Most of the talented filmmakers at ShortFest are looking to go on to a career in feature films and a great many of the ShortFest alumni have done so, including Oscar® winner Brie Larson from The Room, Jason Reitman from Juno and Up in the Air, Ava DuVernay from Selma, and Robin Swicord from The Promise. ShortFest has been designated by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as an award-qualifying festival and, in the past 21 years, more than 100 films at ShortFest have gone on to receive Academy Award nominations. ShortFest also is accredited by the International Short Film Conference and designated by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) as an award-qualifying festival. A large number of film industry people, including distributors, online acquisition people and film festival programmers, come to ShortFest just to watch films on monitors in our industry marketplace. This year, we’ll have almost 4,000 films available for viewing in the marketplace, making it the largest such resource in the country. Rod Lurie, who directed such feature films as The Contender, Straw Dogs and The Last Castle, made his directorial debut at the 1998 ShortFest with 4 Second Delay, and it only could be seen in the marketplace. There are many people I need to thank for making this exciting film festival happen, including Lili Rodriguez, our new ShortFest Director, Rhea LewisWoodson, the managing director of our umbrella Palm Springs International Film Society, and Landon Zakheim, who produces the forums where so much of the educational information is passed along from experts in their fields. I also want to thank Rozene and Ric Supple, whose generosity, support and foresight have long benefited our festivals. Other invaluable help comes from our board of directors, the hundreds of volunteers who make this festival function smoothly every year, the Palm Springs City Council, our many sponsors and the many individual donors who help make ShortFest such a premier event. Sincerely,
Harold Matzner

WELCOME 2017 SHORTFEST FESTIVAL DIRECTOR’S LETTER If there is one thing I know, it’s that the movies are still good and the world might just be a better place for it. It’s been an honor watching and selecting films for you all. The entire programming team has had an amazing time putting together a program that will hopefully make you think, laugh, cry, scream, feel. Maybe even all in the same block! Thank you to the entire ShortFest family of amazing staff and volunteers. Thank you to Harold Matzner and the Board of Directors. And thank YOU for loving movies and supporting short films and the people who make them. Here’s the program. Hope you love it as much as we do!
