Welcome to Commercial GREENFLEET 2022 With air quality at the top of central and local government agendas, traditionally fuelled commercial vehicles are rapidly becoming unviable in UK cities. The wider availability and lower running costs of electric and alternatively fuelled light commercials, vans, trucks and HGVs can now offer fleet managers a solid business case for moving towards a zero carbon fleet. But how can it be achieved cost-effectively and without disruption to logistics services your customers have come to rely on? This is where Commercial GREENFLEET can help. Learn from some of the best fleet experts in the net zero field such as National Highways which has set an ambition for all its customers to be travelling using net zero transport by 2050; this includes commercial fleets large and small. Priorities are not just to help the uptake of electric cars and vans, but to roll out solutions to decarbonise HGVs and develop a road network to support low carbon heavy freight vehicles – with the latter remaining the biggest challenge. Hear how National Highways is trialling low carbon heavy freight transport and working hard to develop a road network to support heavy freight fleets become zero carbon by 2050.

Cooper to the programme to discuss charge anxiety and what is being done to alleviate the worries this can cause to net zero logistics operations. With strategy, policy and grants insight from OZEV, the latest parc data of commercial use EV & AFV registrations revealed and updates on low carbon gas options for large goods vehicles covered by the Road Transport Fuel Association, we are confident you are in the right place you get everything you need to make an educated decision on your next step to a net zero commercial fleet. All that is left to say is a big thank you for being with us and we wish you an enjoyable and interactive morning with Commercial GREENFLEET.

Colin Boyton, Events manager

And because sporadic and often slow growth in charging infrastructure remains a concern for fleets, we welcome National Grid’s Graeme

As MD Andy was integrally involved in the design and implementation of the latest accreditation schemes for both buses and HGVs, supporting DfT and OLEV in stimulating the uptake of low carbon technologies. He has a strong background in vehicle engineering, specialising in powertrain developments, fuel economy and emissions. He was formerly Group Head of Commercial and Projects at Millbrook Proving Ground where he led the work on powertrain test and development programmes and alternative fuels for a variety of global OEM customers. He joined Millbrook after a year’s training with Vauxhall Motors by whom he was sponsored to study for a degree in mechanical engineering at Southampton University. He is a Fellow of the Institution of the Mechanical Engineers and was formerly a Board member of CENEX the Centre of Excellence for Low Carbon & Fuel Cell Technologies.

Paul has nearly 30 years automotive industry experience specialising in the LCV sector and championing the transition to an electric future. Previously leading commercial vehicle and electric vehicle strategy for a number of organisations including Vanarama and LeasePlan, Paul’s goal is to engage and get people thinking about the challenges of EV adoption and the latest innovations in the LCV sector. Paul’s organisation, EV Essentials, works to accelerate the transition to electric and zero emission vehicles, providing insight, training and resources to support EV adoption.

National Highways We’re the government company which plans, designs, builds, operates and maintains England’s motorways and major A-roads, known as the strategic road network (SRN). We want everyone who uses and works on our roads to get home safe and well. By planning and designing roads that meet the highest levels of safety, we can reduce the

number of fatal or serious injuries. With more than four million journeys taking place daily, our roads play a vital part in many people’s lives. Since 2015 we’ve invested billions in new routes and extra capacity, such as the A14 in East Anglia and a ‘spine’ of smart motorways up and down the country. We also plan and manage a programme of works to make sure our roads, and the various structures along them, are safe. highwaysengland.co.uk

Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) is a team working across government to support the early market for zero emission vehicles (ZEV). We are providing over £900 million to position the UK at the global forefront of

ZEV development, manufacture and use. This will contribute to economic growth and will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution on our roads. OZEV is part of the Department for Transport and the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

National Grid National Grid may be a wellknown name, but there are often misconceptions as to what we actually do. We own the Electricity Transmission in England and Wales, as well as the Gas Transmission for the whole of Great Britain. This means that we own the Motorways and Dual Carriageways of the energy system, where the local A and B roads are run by Regional Distribution Networks; hence we are critical to keeping the lights on and the gas flowing. National Grid does not buy, sell, or generate electricity, we simply transport it from where it’s made to where

it’s consumed. We obviously share the target of net zero by 2050, are confident about meeting this target. In this vein of sustainability, we are aware that as the Transmission Owner, we have an essential role when it comes to the electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the UK. National Grid can cope with 100% EVs and having the right ‘future proof’ grid capacity at the right location ahead of need is key to success for charge point owners. National Grid is the enabler of the low carbon transport future, and we see collaboration ensuring this ‘managed transition’ to clean transport. www.nationalgrid.com

RTFA RTFA is the voice of the UK’s liquid renewable and gaseous fuel producers and suppliers, established to promote rapid carbon savings through switching from fossil fuels to low carbon and renewable alternatives. COP26 has shown that acting now to bring down carbon emissions is essential. Unfortunately, the role that fuel can play

in decarbonising is often overlooked, yet renewable fuels are providing the bulk of current emissions reductions. The decarbonisation of both vehicle and fuel is required in order to have any real hope of meeting climate reduction ambitions. A dual approach will work faster and speed is essential in trying to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. rtfa.org.uk
