COUNTER TERROR BUSINESS 365 • 8th October 2020
WELCOME Xx WELCOME TO COUNTER TERROR BUSINESS 365 Thank you for joining us today for CTB365’s Event Management Security – brought to you by the team behind the Counter Terror Business brand. On 22 May 2017, an Islamist extremist suicide bomber detonated a shrapnel-laden homemade bomb as people were leaving the Manchester Arena following a concert by US singer Ariana Grande. Twenty-three people died and 139 were wounded, more than half of them children. One of those killed was Martyn Hett, Figen Murray’s son. Since that fateful day, Figen has campaigned tirelessly to get legislation passed by the Government to have a series of safety protocols put in place for venues nationwide – Martyn’s Law. Martyn’s Law requires entertainment venues to improve security against the threat of an attack by putting in place a counter-terrorism plan. Her petition to make Martyn’s Law mandatory has received over 23,000 signatures and is now on its way to becoming a reality. The Public Inquiry is currently underway, and we can expect the findings by early next spring. The Government’s recent announcement that, due to the ‘second wave’ of the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be a further six month hiatus before venues, stadia and arenas can fully open their doors to the Public, means that there has never been a better time to thoroughly examine the safety and security protocols, implement new technology and revise the risk management strategies needed to securely open up the events industry again in 2021. This is where CTB365 comes in. We have a world class speaker line-up of industry thought leaders who will discuss these issues to illustrate how the role of security officers, in tandem with venue owners/operators, risk management analysts, and physical security experts can (once again) deliver the safe, secure and entertaining live events that we all deserve.

SPEAKERS Philip Ingram, Journalist & Intelligence Specialist Philip Ingram MBE BSc MA GCLI is a widely published journalist, specialising in the security and intelligence arenas, who has built on a long and senior career in British Military Intelligence, with years of experience in all aspects of intelligence and security as well as strategic planning. Slightly tongue in cheek in his Twitter profile, Philip refers to himself as an, ‘Ex spy, specialised in taking over countries, now writes and broadcasts about things intelligence, security, cyber, CBRNE (that is Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives), geopolitics, terror and more’. Philip now runs his own media company, Grey Hare Media, and between the Army and this, he was a sales and marketing director for a large cast steel manufacturer, learning about business, and then managing director and editor in chief of a B2B Security focused print and online publication.
Figen Murray Figen Murray is the mother of Martyn Hett, who at 29 years of age was tragically killed in the terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena in May 2017. Figen is now committed to her mission of promoting peace, kindness and tolerance in Martyn’s memory, while also working towards tangible changes that can help ensure no other family has to go through what hers did. Figen commits her time to talk to young people in schools, colleges and universities educating them about the dangers of radicalisation and is also the force behind Martyn’s Law, a legislation requiring entertainment venues to improve security against the threat of terrorism, and one that requires that all venues in Manchester have a counter-terrorism plan. Her petition to make Martyn’s Law mandatory has received over 23,000 signatures and is now on its way to becoming a reality. She has also just been presented with the Outstanding Contribution award at the 2020 Counter Terror Awards for her efforts in stopping terrorism.
Nick Aldworth, Director, Risk to Resolution Ltd Nick retired from a 36-year career in policing and military service in 2019. He finished his career as a Detective Chief Superintendent in Counter Terrorism Policing where he held the role of National Coordinator (Protect and Prepare). He led the operational protective security responses to the London 2017 terrorist attacks and prior to that was the Chief Inspector of policing and security operations at the UK Parliament. Most of his career was spent in uniformed operations and included EOD search and VIP protection as well as leading armed response teams in London. Nick met Figen Murray in 2018 and they quickly established a common aim of wanting to improve the legislative landscape as well as forming an enduring friendship. Working together, Nick was able to align his knowledge of protective security needs alongside Figen’s ability to articulate the impact that terrorism has on victims, survivors and their families. This created a compelling case for change that the government listened to and are now committed to Martyn’s Law, known formally as the Protect Duty. As well as campaigning, Nick is now working with the Home Office and a private sector sponsor, Pool Reinsurance Ltd, to develop some of the supporting infrastructure to make Martyn’s Law a success. He is a regular media and conference commentator and writes for a variety of publications. Outside of work, he coaches a minis rugby team, is learning to play the violin and has an expensive fascination with racing cars!

Evolv makes it possible for venues of all kinds to keep visitors and employees safe from concealed weapons, pandemic health threats and intruders. In the wake of COVID-19, a fundamentally new approach to security screening is necessary for venues to safely reopen. The days of putting our personal items in containers handled by security guards are over. Evolv Express™ is the first and only touchless security screening solution that meets all post-pandemic security screening requirements. Through the fusion of highspeed sensors and proprietary AI software, Express identifies threats in real-time without requiring visitors to stop, empty pockets, or remove bags. Customers across a variety of industries are implementing Evolv Express to emerge from pandemic shutdowns with confidence and optimism because it’s security screening that is touchless, respectful and efficient.
