HEALTH BUSINESS AWARDS – 3rd DECEMBER 2015

Sponsored by

WELCOME xoxoxo

DEAR ATTENDEE

SPONSORS

We are delighted to host the 2015 Health Business Awards at the Grange Hotel, London. The event aims to recognise the many examples of excellence and best practice in all areas of the National Health Service. Ever since the NHS came into operation in July 1948, it has often been regarded as one of the greatest achievements in history. Whilst the majority of the coverage the NHS receives in the national and local media focuses on its perceived failings, the Health Business Awards aims to reinforce and promote the incredible work the goes on in hospitals and other NHS organisations throughout the UK every single day. The past few years have seen changes in the NHS structure which it is hoped will help to steer it through the clinical and economic challenges of the next generation, and in particular, address the problems posed by an ageing population. Huge challenges remain, and the burden on NHS organisations to adapt remains constant, but everyone can be immensely proud of their achievements so far. Thank you to all the winners and shortlisted organisations for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend. We hope to welcome you back next year, when the Health Business Awards intends to recognise another year of progress in the unique organisation which remains the envy of the world.

Yours sincerely Jason Devoto Managing Director – PSi Group

Air Ambulance Service Award

SPONSORED BY

H East Anglian Air Ambulance East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) and critical care charities across the eastern region joined forces for a CPR-athon event that aims to raise awareness of the importance of early bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and equip over 1,000 members of the public with the practical skills to save a life. The working group was established in 2014 to develop a coherent and consistent communications strategy to build general awareness of critical care and tackle key regional issues. This campaign has proved to be a great exercise in regional partnership.

H Midlands Air Ambulance Charity Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC) manages the largest air ambulance operating region in the UK and continues to provide the very best standard of emergency pre-hospital care to patients across the Midlands. Over the past 12 months, the service undertook 2,000 air ambulance missions, conveying 1,835 patients to the most appropriate hospitals for their individual requirements. MAAC extended its service during the winter months, enabling it to operate 14 hours per day throughout the year, and transferring patients between lit helipads during the hours of darkness for the first time in the charity’s 24 year history.

H Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust Cornwall presents unique challenges for emergency healthcare due to the scattered population, rugged landscape, isolated rural and island communities, secluded beaches and a slow road network, which can make it very difficult to get patients the urgent medical attention they need. Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust was the first service of its kind in the UK and its highly equipped helicopter flies around 700 rescue missions a year, delivering fast and effective medical care to patients who need it most. The average response time is 12 minutes, and the air ambulance is capable of reaching the Isles of Scilly in less than 28 minutes.

H Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) believes that an air ambulance isn't just a helicopter but a vital service to bring additional medical care and expertise to the scene. EHAAT works closely with air ambulances in London, Kent, Surrey and East Anglia to ensure full coverage of the areas where it operates. The Trust sent a helicopter emergency medical services team to Denmark in September 2015 to address an international audience of students and clinical experts on how the Trust operates to bring cutting-edge medical treatment to the pre-hospital scene, spreading best practice on an international level.

Saving lives demands quick response times. In the critical realm of air medical operations, there is no room for compromise or excuse. With 50 units in active HEMS service around the globe, and nearly 200,000 mission hours flown, the MD 902 Explorer delivers dependable, versatile and powerful performance. A rotorcraft industry leader for more than 50 years, MD Helicopters delivers a unique and unparalleled HEMS capability in its twin-engine MD 902 Explorer. Equipped with the MD Helicopters-exclusive no tail rotor NOTAR® system for anti-torque control, the MD 902 provides safer, quieter and more reliable confined-access capability than any other helicopter in its class. Additionally, the wide cabin and customisable interior can be configured to ensure medical teams have both ample and secure space to deliver the lifesaving treatment patients need. MD Helicopters, Inc. (MDHI), a Lynn Tilton company, is a leading manufacturer of commercial, military, law enforcement and air-rescue helicopters. The MDHI family of rotorcraft is world renowned for its value, versatility and performance and includes the twin-engine MD 902 Explorer, and single engine versions of the MD 600N, MD 520N, MD 500E, MD 530F, MD 530G and MD 540A. Clinical Commissioning Award

SPONSORED BY

H NHS Castle Point and Rochford CCG NHS Castle Point and Rochford CCG is the only CCG in the East of England to have been granted full delegation of primary care commissioning. It has launched numerous ‘preventative’ projects such as the new ‘Care Coordination’ service. Working in partnership with GP practices, the new service identifies those patients whose health is deemed to be at-risk of decline. The new service aims to support and maintain the independence of patients and increase their health and well-being. It has already begun preventing unnecessary admissions to hospital by intervening early before a crisis.

H NHS Southport and Formby CCG Data from NHS England ranked NHS Southport and Formby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) the best in the country in supporting adult diabetics to control their blood glucose levels for 2013/14. With approximately 6,500 people in the area living with diabetes, the CCG commissions diabetes services with a real focus on prevention, educating people on how to successfully manage the disease in order to reduce the risk of future complications. The CCG also works to ensure that patients at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes have access to lifestyle advice and support to help them stay healthy, well and diabetes free.

H North West Reading CCG North West Reading CCG is comprised of ten GP practices who have worked closely together for a considerable number of years with common values to develop services and share best practice. It was in the top three CCGs nationally for quality premium achievement in 2013-14, which rewards CCGs for improvements in the quality of services they commission, associated improvements in health outcomes and reducing inequalities. The CCG met eight out of nine targets for 2013-14 and was rewarded with £437,000 in quality premium funding, which has been reinvested to further improve patient care for 2014-15 and beyond.

H NHS Lambeth CCG NHS Lambeth CCG is an innovative system leader and has helped to reduce health inequalities for patients in the Lambeth area. Engagement with local people, members and partners is integral to the CCG, which has a vision for health services that is people and prevention focused, integrated, consistent, innovative and delivers best value. Through projects such as the Big Lambeth Health Debate, the Strategic Breastfeeding Group and the Diabetes Modernisation Initiative, Lambeth CCG has a strong track record for successfully engaging with the local community and improving health outcomes through a collaborative approach to healthcare.

For decades, the industry has faced constant and growing criticism about costs and as such organisations are constantly being pushed to find ways to cut costs and improve efficiencies. At the same time, providers are continually looking for ways to improve the quality of – and access to – patient care and the information associated with it. This is particularly challenging in an era of patient rights, ubiquitous online connectivity and the information expectations driven by social media and freedom of information demands. Patients are more knowledgeable than ever before and are demanding greater participation in their healthcare decisions. Complicating these challenges are new and evolving technology advances such as mobile, cloud, and analytics, which healthcare organisations need to embrace to remain competitive. By deploying an enterprise content management system alongside other line-of-business applications, including EMRs, healthcare organisations gain a strategic hub for managing all content that flows through the enterprise. Key benefits include: • Centralised storage • Business process agility • Enhanced compliance • Faster access to patient information • A notable ROI FURTHER INFORMATION To discuss further how Fujitsu document scanner solutions can benefit your business contact us at scannersales@uk.fujitsu.com

Environmental Practice Award

PRESENTED BY

H Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust In 2013/14, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust spent over £1.1m on waste management. The Trust has established a partnership with Bywaters for a total waste management service, involving the collection and safe disposal of all waste products. Recycling has increased from 38 per cent in 2013/14 to 43 per cent in 2014/15 and high temperature disposal has reduced by seven per cent. The improvements saved over £260,000. Each month the Trust supplies around 400 litres of used cooking oil from its catering services to make biofuel, used to fuel London's black cab services.

H University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust University College London (UCL) Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has overseen a number of environmental projects in order to save time, improve efficiency and reduce waste. The Trust recently installed a scheme to improve stock management, whereby a system of bar coding was implemented and frequent reviewal of stock carried out to reduce overstocking. This saved an estimated 30 minutes of time per day for ward staff. In addition, paperless radiotherapy was introduced to decrease paper consumption by creating electronic spreadsheets. The Trust also pioneered a patient led water diary initiative, which helped to reduce expenditure on IV fluids.

H Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has made great strides to encourage environmental thinking in its staff and reduce its carbon footprint through its travel plan. The plan first came about through a shortage of parking and encourages staff to use alternative travel options, such as cycling, public transport, walking and car sharing. A staff travel survey in 2014 showed that the plan continues to be a success since its launch in 2010, with single occupancy vehicles down by six per cent and over 250 staff taking part in 'Public Transport 2 work', 'Cycle 2 work', 'Walk 2 work' and leave your car at home weeks, which included giveaways to promote uptake.

H East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust’s Conquest Hospital in Hastings has revamped its 30-year-old server room to make it more energy efficient, with the aim of cutting costs and carbon emissions. The changes are predicted to save the Trust approximately £113,000, with significant savings coming from the use of new air cooling technology, which is expected to reduce running costs by around 85 per cent as it does not rely on any additional refrigerants to work. Other energy efficient features include the addition of hot and cold aisle containment, raised flooring and a new lighting system, which have helped reduce the facility’s power usage.

Health Business, now in its 15th year, is published bi-monthly by PSI. HB's pages contain needto-know features, news and case studies that explain the administrative and commercial issues affecting healthcare and hospital management. Health Business Magazine is distributed by name and job title to Primary Care Trusts, NHS Acute Trusts, Ambulance Trusts, Foundation Hospitals, Strategic Health Authorities, Government Departments and Independent Hospitals/Clinics. Estates and Facilities Innovation Award

SPONSORED BY

H Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust In the autumn of 2014, Heartlands Hospital began accepting suspected Ebola patients. To aid in both planning and the response of suspected cases, the Trust used an outsourced facilities management team. They worked together during patient transfer to ensure the patients’ privacy and dignity was maintained, whilst safeguarding staff, patients and visitors. This included a dedicated emergency phone line; the training and activation of appropriately protected staff; the lockdown of significant areas of the hospital during transfer; and individual cleaners who followed the patient from arrival point to ward isolation. During the lockdown the security staff managed the dual expectations and needs of not only the suspected patient but the additional pressures of visitors and staff who were trying to access the main corridor.

H North Bristol NHS Trust As part of the design of a new PFI hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust is responsible for the implementation of an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) solution at the new Brunel hospital. The AGV system is able to transport: pharmaceutical products; general supplies; sterile supplies; patient meals; other catering consumables; linen; domestic waste; clinical waste and all other waste streams. Control systems also allow the tracking of materials while loads are in the AGV system. Each roll-cage can be uniquely identified and tracked throughout the transport process. In addition, load pickup and drop off times can be monitored. The system also offers further improvement by maintaining clear aisles and organised workstations, which improves the workplace environment for employees and patients. Once phase two of the Brunel build is complete in May 2016, the system will take on even more journeys to and from various internal locations.

H Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust The new Information Management and Technology (IM&T) building at Bath's Royal United Hospital (RUH) houses the Trust's IT and Medical Records teams. At first sight it looks like just another office building, but the innovative design approach resulted in a building that was built in a fraction of the site time of other similar structures, which resulted in reduced building costs and less disruption on site. The building was constructed using flat pack components that were produced in a factory and assembled onsite, reducing the construction cost by 15 per cent and the construction time by 40 per cent. The project took less than eight months to assemble, and its layout means it is easily adaptable should future requirements change. In addition to this, the building will also have life-long low running costs because of its sustainable design. The finished product is an energy efficient building that still manages to create a superb environment for the staff.

The company is owned by Greg and Julia Pons. Greg first saw the Evac Trac CD7 evacuation chair in 2006 and realised that this was easier and safer to use than the standard evacuation chairs that people are familiar with. We started to promote these and quickly realised that people with different disabilities require different solutions and that one design does not fit all! You also must take into consideration the stairs and landings, as these again affect the evacuation chair that can be used. Is the person in a wheelchair, if yes, then should they transfer? What happens when they are outside without their wheelchair? People were looking at fire evacuation in isolation and SwallowEMP realised that access and egress are part of the solution and should be equally considered. If you look at access and egress (The Equality Act) then fire evacuation should be covered BUT if you look at fire then access and egress is not covered. We offer a range of portable products that are primarily powered and therefore go both up and down stairs. Reduce manual handling by not asking people to carry people up and down stairs. Swallow EMP are specialists in stair climbers and solutions that assist in moving people up and down stairs. Contact us for expert and impartial advice. FURTHER INFORMATION Visit www.swallowemp.com to find out about the options available to improve access, egress and evacuation.

Healthcare IT Award

SPONSORED BY

H Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has worked to integrate discrete clinical systems across the Trust’s wards and departments, reducing duplication and potential associated risks to patients. HealthViews is a web-based application allowing clinical staff to log into a number of systems simultaneously using a single sign in. Alongside HealthViews, a new electronic prescribing and medicine administrative system and a new electronic discharge summary process were designed to improve continuity of care. Since the introduction of these systems, the percentage of patients issued with a discharge summary increased from 20 per cent to over 90 per cent. Many wards are now achieving 100 per cent compliance, above the government’s mandatory target of 95 per cent, and information is shared with local GP practices within 20 minutes.

H Leicester City CCG Leicester City CCG and SCSLhealth have developed an analytics tool to enhance patient safety and deliver savings. INRstar analytics is a real-time business intelligence tool that has been developed to support clinical leads, practices and commissioners to work together to improve the safety of warfarin dosing and reduce the risk of strokes across its population. The tool supports clinicians to analyse Time in Therapeutic Range (TTR) trends, National Patient Safety Association audits and identifies patients who have missed INR tests which could put them at risk of stroke. The project has transformed how the Programme Management Team works with practices in the area and the way in which they present quality and activity performance. Together, the Programme Manager and practices have been able to reduce the number of patients at risk of not being monitored by 78 per cent, preventing a potential 37 strokes and saving an estimated £499,000.

H NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon CCG Delt enables partners to reduce risks and look for economies of scale by sharing management expertise, increasing leverage with suppliers, sharing systems that lead to reduction in costs for hosting, maintaining and upgrading, more opportunities for staff which could result in lower turnover and reduced recruitment costs. It provides consistent technology that works across both health and social care to enhance working relationships, service delivery, organisational reputation and, most importantly, patient experience, with the ultimate aim on enabling an integrated health and social care record. By bringing together an experienced group of technical specialists, Delt eliminates any duplication or waste and releases capacity to support other projects. Enabling one single network increases efficiency and productivity, improves staff morale and rationalises support to one single help desk, with potential savings of £14.5 million identified over the next 10 years.

Voice Connect is a specialist integrator of computer and telephony solutions. Working in partnership with EMIS, INPS, SystmOne, FrontDesk and Microtest, Voice Connect has been providing original cost saving systems to the NHS since 1991. Its products are also deployed in the public, charities and business sectors. Patient Partner, Voice Connect’s 24/7 automated booking system has become an essential part of any practice’s access strategy, proven to reduce DNAs, extend out of hours options, improve patient access and reduce A&E attendances. It works to support hardworking reception teams, reducing the amount of calls they take, freeing them to help patients at reception. Recent developments such as telephone triage and GP card payment solutions continue to support Voice Connect’s reputation as an innovative, cost saving solution provider to the healthcare sector. Voice Connect’s product range also includes Medical Messenger, an enhanced email and texting service which automatically sends appointment confirmation and reminders and is perfect for mass campaigns. VC SmartMail( a GP specific letter mailing service), Patient Echo( call recording for practices) ,VC LoneWorker (a staff safety service), Automated 24/7 telephone repeat prescription ordering and a sexual health triaging system, are all part of the large range of healthcare specific Voice Connect products. H Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust runs a successful Gateway Academy Business Administration Apprenticeship programme through the Education Training and Development department. Recognising the need to bring fresh skills into an ageing NHS workforce, the Trust has worked with Hawk Training and the National Skills Academy for Health to get 41 young people onto an apprenticeship programme since March 2014. The first cohort recently completed, with a further 33 currently in progress. Line managers support apprentices to work in a wide range of departments who value the insight that young people bring. The Trust strives to be inclusive and has supported candidates with autism, mobility needs and deafness, providing interpreters, job coaches, and any other accessibility needs candidates have to ensure they complete successfully.

H Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust The ‘Learning Works’ project run by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust aims to help and support local people to enhance their employability through a range of different pathways. Starting in 2013, the Learning Works project has involved a number of local organisations in the West Midlands including Sandwell Council, working together to support people in getting work. The project helps candidates to improve their interview skills, check their CVs and helps them to enhance their applications. To date, more than 70 per cent of those undertaking work experience and pre-employment training with the project are now in full time employment and 100 per cent of apprentices have gone on to gain employment. Many apprentices have said that the apprenticeship has boosted their confidence and inspired them to pursue careers in healthcare. The Learning Works project is the Trust's commitment to developing a diverse workforce for the NHS.

H University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB) has developed various projects concerned with embedding a clear employeefocussed value-base throughout all people management functions and processes. In particular, UHMB has made significant progress in the ‘Entry’ cornerstone project, establishing three new systems of improvement. Firstly it has introduced a new ‘Values Based, Induction Process’, whereby new starters attend a three day corporate induction programme following commencement. Secondly, ‘Recruitment and Retention through Innovation and Collaboration’ has been implemented to expand international recruitment, a cohort approach to recruitment, the development of an assessment centre approach and promotion of the Trust and careers across the UK. Thirdly, UHMB has applied a ‘Growing your own’ strategy to decrease the reliance on bank and agency staff and independently grow a skilled an motivated local workforce.

The challenge for the NHS is to balance safer staffing and slimmer budgets with workforce supply and demand. However, with a £930 million overspend from April to June this year – more than last year’s entire deficit – and with winter around the corner, these pressures are only likely to be compounded further with staffing ‘gaps’ being continually exposed. For de Poel health+care, it’s more about how the NHS can do more with what it has and work smarter and more efficiently – and that ultimately means better use of technology. de Poel health+care is revolutionising the relationships that NHS Trusts have with their recruitment agencies. It manages and supports the entire temporary recruitment process on their behalf to give greater transparency and yield up to 20 per cent in direct cost savings. How else could you save an average of a million pounds without spending a single penny? With no affiliation to any agency, de Poel provides a fair, transparent approach to temporary recruitment. With a commercial model directly linked to client savings, the company guarantees a stronger and clearer supplier sourcing strategy. de Poel would undertake an online assessment and provide a simple breakdown of how much money an NHS organisation can save annually, at no cost whatsoever. H University Hospital Bristol NHS Foundation Trust Bristol Royal Infirmary’s new ward block provides a stimulating environment to aid patient recovery. It has replaced outdated inpatient facilities and has allowed for a clinical rationalisation of the existing estate to incorporate a new acute medical unit, older persons assessment unit, paediatric clinical investigation unit, intensive care unit and surgical wards. The central atrium which allows natural daylight to penetrate deep into the heart of the building forms a focus. The new ward block has been designed to complement existing buildings on the site in form, scale and aesthetics.

H Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Foundation Trust The new Information Management and Technology (IM&T) building at Bath's Royal United Hospital (RUH) was constructed using flat pack components that were produced in a factory and assembled on-site, reducing the construction cost by 15 per cent and the construction time by 40 per cent. The project took less than eight months to assemble, and its layout means it is easily adaptable should future requirements change. In addition to this, the building will also have life-long low running costs because of its sustainable design. The finished product is an energy efficient building that still manages to create a superb working environment.

H Alder Hey Childrens' NHS Foundation Trust The new £237m Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is now fully up and running after the transfer from the old site was completed. The new hospital building contains 270 beds and 16 operating theatres over five storeys. Striking features at the new hospital include an indoor treehouse containing a spiritual care centre, outdoor play decks featuring fish tanks on each of the six wards, a relaxation garden and interactive screens in patient waiting areas. There are also televisions and sofabeds in each room so parents can stay over and around 70 per cent of patients at the new hospital are given private, en-suite rooms.

H Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust Touted as the first hospital of its kind in the country, the £95m Cramlington hospital has already been recognised at national level by the medical director of NHS England when he described it as a ‘glimpse of the future’ and ‘setting the standard for others to follow’ after its official opening in June. The hospital is the result of 10 years work led by clinical teams at Northumbria Healthcare, and is specifically dedicated to emergency care. It has 210 acute beds spread across seven specialist wards, with A&E consultants physically on site 24/7, as well as specialists in a range of conditions and the best scanning equipment available in the NHS.

H Hitchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trusts’ catering team is the first in-house NHS service to be awarded the Gold Catering Mark from the Soil Association for the standard and quality of its food. Hinchingbrooke’s catering team achieved a very impressive total of 437.9 points, well above what is required to achieve the Gold standard. 80 per cent of current spend is used to purchase ingredients from local suppliers, providing patients, staff and visitors with the freshest ingredients available, while supporting local independent business aiding economical growth. The Trust is committed to providing the best quality produce to help improve patient and staff well-being. All meat is sensibly sourced from red tractor farms and milk and eggs organically sourced. Since 2011, patient satisfaction levels regarding its hospital meals have increased from 48 per cent to 96 per cent in 2014-15.

H Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest in the North West, employing over 9,000 staff and serving approximately 820,000 residents. The Catering Services department serves over 1.4 million meals to patients per year and has worked with hospital staff to introduce systems to provide patients with an excellent catering service. The Trust has initiated a ‘come dine with us’ programme allowing staff to taste food options, exchange allergen advice and offer meals to meet both religious and cultural needs. The Trust maintains that different meal services must be delivered according to the type of patient group. For example, it launched 'Pennine Cuisine' on its new maternity unit offering substantial hot nutritional meals to expectant mothers, ensuring they are able to replenish calories sufficiently. Pennine Cuisine offers a la carte 24 hour service seven days a week and is tailored to patients needs.

H University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust Catering services at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) has introduced a range of innovative ideas in recent years. One such programme includes its work to improve menus across the Trust with celebrity chef James Martin. In addition, the Trust has driven the community ‘meals on wheels’ project - which provides freshly-made meals to the local community. The most recent introduction is the ‘Food to Go’ Bags. The Trust is only the second in the country to introduce ‘Food to Go Bags’, which is an exciting new initiative where some patients receive bags of food when they are discharged from hospital. The scheme ensures that when patients leave the hospital they have the basic foods they need until their care plans are actioned. The initiative was designed to help ease the transition from hospital to home which, alongside a wider programme of care and support, can help to reduce the likelihood of a patient becoming ill again and returning to hospital.

Scottish hospital caterers are discovering the benefits of McCain Signatures Chips after they made a big impression in hospital trials. Wesley Baxter, catering team leader, Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Clydebank, said: “You know what you’re going to get with McCain, great quality products that taste good, present well on the plate and perform consistently, day after day, which is vital when you’re feeding large numbers. I really can’t praise them highly enough. “We trialled a number of products but the chips were a particular highlight. There’s no comparison to other products on the market, I can’t see how they could be bettered. Good chips need to have a crisp outer texture, soft fluffy interior and an appetising, golden colour, and these chips meet that criteria.” McCain Signatures Chips have long been a big favourite on hospital menus in England because of their consistent taste, texture and appetising appearance, whether they are held, cooked in a regen oven or delivered to far away wards. Supervisors provide a tailored four week training programme that tutors housekeepers to deliver a high standard of cleanliness and understand what is expected of them, which helped the Trust achieve 98 per cent for cleanliness in the latest Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE).

H Central Manchester NHS Foundation Trust Central Manchester NHS Foundation Trust introduced ‘cleaning matters’ boards in all wards and departments to give patients access to information regarding cleaning services they can expect while a patient in Central Manchester. The Trust is highly commended for its cleanliness, having scored 97.96 per cent in the latest Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE), with the Andover War Memorial Hospital in particular scoring 100 per cent for its cleanliness, placing it top overall in the region.

H The NHS Collaborative Procurement Partnership The NHS Collaborative Procurement Partnership (NHS CPP) consists of the North of England NHS Commercial Procurement Collaborative, NHS London Procurement Partnership, NHS Commercial Solutions and the NHS East of England Procurement Hubs and represents approximately 60 per cent of NHS trusts. The Total Orthopaedic Solutions project tackles one of the highest areas of non-pay spend subject to varying results across the whole NHS. The scheme has saved £1.3 million, delivering a 21 per cent saving. The framework agreement is already delivering results for members and has proven that savings can be made on 12 months spend including: cost avoidance over lifetime of agreement; value added service of clinically engaged process leading to effective implementation; and rationalisation resulting in a further cost reduction through efficiencies.

H Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust/London Procurement Partnership This project is a first for the NHS and has required significant collaboration and engagement by the PFI team with Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust and with the PFI service provider. It has delivered huge financial benefits, well in excess of the government’s targets for PFI reviews. The project called upon the team to be focused in exercising its professional commercial skills and knowledge to best serve the customer. This resulted in a £4.81m benefit for Dartford and is a service offering which is now being developed to be available for the wider NHS to access. The benchmarking negotiations delivered an optimum VFM price reduction to the Trust of £4.81 million on the Soft FM element of the PFI contract over the next five years. This reduction represents a saving of around 12 per cent on the annual spend of Soft FM services whilst maintaining service levels to the required standard. The 12 per cent savings far exceeded the government's five per cent target.

H Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust set up a Non Pay Strategy (NPS) to identify actions to limit non pay spend, which accounted for £146 million in 2012/13, 35 per cent of total Trust expenditure. The NPS was developed with the involvement of the Trust Board, clinical colleagues, finance and procurement teams, suppliers and key business leaders. It outlines a series of initiatives including supply chain transformation, contract governance and locum agency spend, as well as a multi-faceted spend dashboard that tracks spend and identifies inflation ‘Hot Spots’. The NPS was responsible for implementing a ground-breaking, innovation-led change programme that has redesigned the Trust’s internal supply chain, delivering improved efficiency and reduced waste that has redistributed vital capital to frontline care. As a result of this success, the Trust has received visits from other regional NHS Trusts including Devon Partnership Trust and Royal Cornwall NHS Trust to understand its approach.

H East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust The East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust reported 223 assaults on staff from 2013 to 2014, with the Royal Blackburn Hospital's emergency department forced to call police 1,230 times from September 2012 to September 2013. In order to tackle the rising tide of violence, an £80,000 pilot project introduced two full time police liaison officers, stationed in the Accident & Emergency Department. The officers have been trained to work with medical staff to identify individuals who display challenging behaviour, alcohol and substance misuse issues or people with undiagnosed mental health issues.

H Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust The use of security systems at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust is comprehensive across its sites and covers staff at all levels. In efforts to continually improve the protection of its patients, an Enterprise Audit Report (EAR) was used to gather and collate the security inventory and produce a security asset register which highlighted location, condition, value and system architecture design. Norwich and Cromer Hospitals and sub buildings now use a total of 82 TDSi EXpert 4 IP Controllers and 379 EXprox proximity card readers around the hospital facilities, enabling staff to quickly identify specific live events where security can respond appropriately.

H NHS Merton Clinical Commissioning Group There has been real attention given to the provision of security and safety of all staff and visitors at Merton CCG. Given the open plan design of the new Nelson Heath Centre, it was important that the security products blended with the design ethos and architecture of the building. 62 high profile doors at the centre are fitted with offline networked handle sets. These include medical supply, medical room and surgical room doors. These are supplemented by 37 online networked controllers which utilise software to enable the doors and their operating smart cards to be updated throughout the site and access profiles of staff to be changed rapidly as required.

H Royal Liverpool University Hospital With the safety of staff a foremost concern, a temporary fire evacuation and heat detection system was built to client specification during the construction of the new £335 million Royal Liverpool University Hospital building. Operating between Level 0 and Level 10, incorporating local klaxons, red fire alert breakglass and heat detectors on all floors with green medical alert breakglass on alternate floors, the system is monitored remotely. It was called into action on 8 September this year when a fire broke out on site. All of the 800 site operatives were safely clear of the site after the sounders were alerted and fire crews were able to deal with the blaze efficiently.

H Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust has recently moved its dementia assessment service and used the move as an opportunity to demonstrate a practical commitment to its vision of providing the best possible care, top quality services and achieving excellence in the patient experience. The Trust worked with architect firm DLA FreemanWhite to design a state-of-the-art refurbishment for the ward. The £2.5m new unit opened in August 2015 and has attracted praise from carers, families, medical staff, ward staff, commissioners and most importantly, patients.

NHS Publicity Campaign Award

PRESENTED BY

H NHS Arden & GEM CSU To ensure people only come to A&E when it is a genuine emergency, NHS Arden & GEM Commissioning Support Unit (CSU) strengthened the impact of NHS England’s winter pressures campaign at a local level by developing an integrated regional campaign on behalf of 14 CCGs. It worked in partnership with CCGs, local authorities, Healthwatch teams and health service providers to enhance the reach of the campaign and give it an authentic local focus. The four month campaign aimed to educate people about the alternatives to A&E, particularly pharmacy services. Key parts of the campaign included the ‘Under the Weather?’ health bus, which toured shopping centres, libraries and areas with a high footfall, as well as engaging with social media to promote local events, and share key messages about self-care and pharmacy services.

H Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust (LCH) delivers healthcare across the communities of Liverpool and South Sefton, reaching a population of approximately 750,000 people. LCH has around 3,000 staff and services which come into contact with hundreds of thousands of patients in more than 70 locations. They are often involved not only with patients, but also with their families and carers. Throughout the 2014/15 Winter period, LCH successfully delivered a digitally-led internal communications campaign to encourage staff to have the flu vaccination to protect themselves, colleagues, patients and their families. The campaign, #ImmuniseYourSelfie, highlighted the reasons why people should take responsibility for staying healthy during the winter by having the flu jab. LCH’s campaign involved clinical and non-clinical staff members from across its trust, who posted selfies to highlight why they were getting the flu jab.

H Royal College of Nursing The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has long recognised the value of involving nursing staff in the procurement process, as staff working on the frontline can highlight important aspects of product suitability and product standardisation, which can lead to safer patient care, improved quality and financial savings. The RCN, NHS Supply Chain and the Clinical Procurement Specialist Network joined forces in 2014 to raise awareness with senior nursing leaders about the benefits of supporting their organisation’s procurement process and to share resources which would support this work. Since the ‘Small Changes, Big Differences’ campaign launched in March 2015, many senior nursing leaders and clinical specialist procurement nurses have shared their experiences and good practice in taking the campaign forward. The RCN continues to develop resources and attend national events to raise awareness of the campaign to support more nursing staff to get involved in procurement and make a real change to patients’ lives.

H Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CFT) provides mental health and learning disability services. Over 25 per cent of consultants are involved in research studies and it is recognised for developing 'EpSMon' - the Epilepsy Self Monitoring app. Inspectors highlighted services as outstanding, in particular noting the Fettle House long-stay rehabilitation ward at Bodmin Hospital, as well as Bodmin's Electro-Convulsive Therapy Clinic, given the ECTAS Level 1 Award by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

H Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust In March this year, Salford Royal became the first Trust in the North of England to achieve the highest CQC rating. The Trust has been designated as the lead provider for the Greater Manchester Major Trauma Services network, with radical plans to develop new major trauma services well underway. Salford Royal is also recognised for its dermatology research and its childrens services, awarded the 'Baby Friendly' award by UNICEF.

H Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust Under the CQC's new rating system, in September last year Frimley Park became the first trust to be recognised as outstanding. A strong patient-centred culture is evidence of strong leadership, while staff have also been recognised for their pre-natal care and cancer support. Biomedical scientists from the Trust's pathology department were recognised in their efforts to combat the spread of the Ebola Virus.

H Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust In 2013, Basildon and Thurrock was one of the first trusts to be placed in special measures. Two years on, and the turnaround is recognisably remarkable. 'Stepping Up' meetings are credited as invaluable to it's success, while the Trust receives regular praise for the work of its mentors. The Trust has also introduced an initiative to encourage A&E doctors to progress to consultant level.

H Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Papworth Hospital is a leading heart and lung transplant centre and has the largest respiratory support and sleep centre in the UK. The Trust's heart surgery service was recently commended by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery, with the Heart and Lung Research Institute and Cambridge University Biomedical Campus co-locating on a new hospital site, expected for completion in 2018.

Patient Data Award

PRESENTED BY

H Bath and North East Somerset CCG Bath and North East Somerset CCG needed to redesign its Type II diabetes services in response to increasing demand and a need to improve patient outcomes. The CCG began with a simple premise - to commission an effective model of diabetes care for its population. This meant linking data across traditional organisational silos, which involved research, information governance, data gathering, analysis and application. This model enabled the CCG to set its strategy for diabetes care provision in line with the local context and is now being applied more widely in the CCG.

H University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has recently started working on extensive data sets to create predictive models that will aid future resource allocation. The Paediatric Observation Priority Score (POPS) is a bespoke Emergency and Urgent care checklist which quickly scores acutely ill children on a combination of risk identifiers. The Trust has demonstrated that certain POPS are predictive of a length of stay of over 24 hours, which may enable hospital capacity to be predicted 24 hours in advance. This work was done on a data set of over 20,000 patient records and further work is now being performed on 50,000 patient entries over a three year period.

HNHS Arden & GEM CSU NHS Arden & GEM Commissioning Support Unit (CSU) has developed a programme focused on solving a clinical need to improve access to and the use of patient data. This has seen over a quarter of a million patients across Milton Keynes benefit from more accurate, consistent and effective healthcare. All 27 GP practices and 12 primary care outpatient clinics in the area have now moved to a single integrated patient record system, which has delivered £400,000 in cost savings, improved record confidentiality and allowed targets to improve the quality of care to be more easily identified and monitored across the region.

H Poole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Only three years ago Poole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust had an RTT waiting list inflated by data quality issues, a retrospective validation process and a slow manual reporting process. The RTT section of the Trust performance team has delivered fully validated patient level reporting which is soundly embedded in the Trust’s operational processes and reporting processes that can be run as often as required. This has led to a positive contribution to the weekly performance meeting agenda and RTT training for front line staff, all of which has led to an ever expanding program of data quality improvement.

Patient Safety Award

SPONSORED BY

H NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon CCG NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon CCG prides itself on promoting a culture of reporting incidents. It has developed a process where all serious incidents requiring investigation (SIRI) are reviewed by a clinician in addition to the usual process to ensure that they are useful to providers. Once the final report has been received, the incident is reviewed again by clinical reviewers, to mitigate the risk of the incident happening again.

H Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust This Trust has redeveloped its handover of care communications policy and can now ensure the provision of quality, timely and accurate information when a patient is discharged, with electronic prescribing and order communications in use on almost every ward. The Trust also recently joined the NHS ‘Sign Up to Safety’ charter and has seen the number of reported physical assaults fall for the second year in a row.

H Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Identifying and treating sepsis has become a priority at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. To mark World Sepsis Day last year, the Trust launched 'The Sepsis Six' - a set of six internationally recognised clinical interventions performed within the first hour of severe sepsis being diagnosed. Simple interventions such as prescribing antibiotics and giving patients oxygen have helped to increase survival by up to 30 per cent.

H Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust After a ‘Never Event’ at Christchurch Hospital, Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust set about making dramatic improvements to patient safety by full implementation of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Safety Checklist, which reduces the margin for human error during a procedure every time an invasive procedure is performed on a patient.

H Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust The Simulated interPRofessional Team training (SPRinT) programme based in the paediatric intensive care unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital has delivered 170 courses to 1,530 participants. It uses in-situ simulation to provide the multidisciplinary patient care teams with strategic crisis training and insight into human factors that influence performance, using the most advanced simulation mannequins, and its own prototype and patented models, to recreate realistic life-threatening events.

Sustainable Hospital Award

SPONSORED BY

H Isle of Wight NHS Trust The Isle of Wight NHS Trust decided to fulfil its commitment to support the sustainable development of healthcare on the Island by producing a sustainable development management plan, entitled ‘Greener Care’. The plan supports a vision for sustainable health and care systems, which balances environmental, economic, and social factors to deliver optimal outcomes for its patients and communities. Key areas of the plan include: establishing a cross-departmental Waste Management Group, and engaging with its employees through a training and awareness raising campaign; developing an Energy Performance Contract over the past two years as the delivery vehicle for a number of energy and carbon efficiency projects; and achieving a 10 per cent reduction in annual water expenditure by implementing water efficiency technology.

H Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust has increased recycling from 38 per cent in 2013/14 to 43 per cent in 2014/15, with high temperature disposal seeing a reduction of seven per cent. The improvements have saved over £260,000 over the course of the year and have contributed significantly towards the Trust’s environmental and financial objectives. To achieve these reductions, each month the Trust supplies around 400 litres of used cooking oil from its catering services to make biofuel used in London’s black cabs. It was also the first Trust to install a weighbridge system to track all bin weights, allow it to identify trends, areas of low level recycling and high levels of non-recyclable disposal. Looking towards the future, the Trust has a target of reducing carbon emissions by more than 34 per cent, which it plans to achieve through keeping all of its waste within the M25, with all non-recyclable waste sent to a energy from waste facility on the Thames.

H Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust While easily recycled, PVC used to make disposable medical devices has traditionally been disposed of as clinical waste. The Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust set up the first medical PVC recycling project outside Australia, in which three common single use PVC items were picked for their suitability: anaesthetic facemasks, oxygen tubing and oxygen masks from elective, non-infectious patients. Recovery staff used their discretion and discarded any items that were soiled or from a potentially infectious patient into a clinical waste bin, while clean items were diverted into a clearly labelled recycling bin. The pilot encouraged the Environmental Agency to allow ‘sensible’ recycling of items previously considered clinical waste and helped to open up channels to manufactures to make more single use items recyclable. Compliance with the process was nearly 100 per cent and cross contamination of the recycling bins with other waste was zero, resulting in approximately 200kg of PVC diverted from landfill or incineration to date.

Everyone in the UK has a local NHS Trust that they can depend when needed. In order to treat these people and to function at its best the NHS works with trusted partners in many fields and one of the most critical is facilities management (FM). Mitie is one of the foremost FM providers within the NHS in England today, embedded in trusts around the country, working in true partnerships to deliver best service and best value. Mitie healthcare specialists work within the NHS dealing with cleanliness, infection control, security, supply chain management, patient catering, linen supplies, and many other areas, freeing up NHS management and clinical staff alike to focus on what they do best. In the past year alone, in different NHS trusts around the country, Mitie has invested £250,000 in a new retail restaurant, pioneered new smart technology in patient dining options, trained up its employees in lean six sigma for greater efficiency and has recruited and trained hundreds of local people to work in local hospitals. Mitie's waste and recycling experts help trusts to operate sustainably through innovations and investment, and for this reason Mitie is proud to sponsor the most sustainable hospital award.
