Keeping your organization up-to-date As PSIA – Rocky Mountain – AASI attempts to keep pace with the changing technologies, we are asking for your help as members. The trend is away from printed materials to access to all information about events, membership policy changes and new products being available to members on-line and via e-mail. In order to be able to receive the most up-to-date news from the organization, we are asking that you keep your contact information current. This includes your e-mail address, your phone numbers, your member school affiliation and your US postal mailing address. This is easy to do! The RM website, http://www.psia-rm.org, allows all members to create a user name and password to have access to personal information. You may update your personal contact information, view your educational credit history and see events for which you are registered. You will need two pieces of personal information to create a user name and password so you’ll be able to access all the great features – your Rocky Mountain membership ID number and your birth date. The ID number is printed on your ID card. Most member birth dates are in their record. If you feel that yours is not there, please call the office to confirm your birth date is in your record and that the date is correct. Once you have these two pieces of information visit the site, www.psia-rm.org, and click the link just under the menu and ‘Become a Member’ link on the left-hand side of the screen. There is a Login button under ‘Already a member?’. If you have already created your user name and password, you just enter that information in the two boxes with the blue bars above them and are immediately taken to your personal page. If you have not created the user name and password, you skip over those two boxes and click on the link in the next sentence: If you have not set up your online account, click here. You will be asked for your RM ID number and birth date to set up your user name and password. Please keep track of this information since you’ll want to be visiting the site numerous times throughout the year! You will need to actually login with the information just created to have access to YOUR personal information. You may change your contact information by clicking the ‘Click here to Update Contact Information’, or change your password by clicking the ‘Click Here to Update your Account Password’. From there, please feel free to go through the site to find the latest edition of the newsletter, past editions of the newsletter, the schedule of events for the current season, policies and procedures, promotional offers, scholarship opportunities and many other features.
President’s Notes The skiing and snowboarding Buyer’s Guides are out on the newsstands, which can only mean one thing: we are closing in on a new sliding season. Fortunately, we still have a few months before we click in or strap up. If you have not been buffing out the body this summer, you still have some time to get in tip top shape for what is looking like a very busy season. The latest buzz in our division is certainly the lack of H2B visas. I personally will miss all of my international friends, but welcome the opportunities that this change opens up for all of us. We have openings for full time snowsport professionals, which we may not have had in the past. The dream of teaching skiing or snowboarding is still very much alive and well. PSIA-RM-AASI is very excited about the

new and improved curriculum that is being developed for all of us. We are looking to become a resource center for the member schools and the members alike. The first phase of the Professional Development Series (PDS) will provide all members new options and new directions to explore, aside from the typical certification paths. There will be more details on this new program in other articles in this newsletter, as well as on our website, www.psia-rm.org. Please check it out for more information and to sign up for any of the courses being offered this season. Most of you probably watched the Olympics during the month of August. As you know, the athletes wait four years for that grand stage to show their talents and compete against others to earn the top spot in the world. We have a similar event that goes on every four years, the
National Team Tryouts. The selected team represents the country every four years at Interski. I am thrilled to take this opportunity to honor the Rocky Mountain representatives and newly selected members of the 2008-2012 National Team. These wonderfully gifted athletes and educators have devoted an enormous amount of time to training and honing their skills during the last few years with hopes of realizing their goal. Many of us have had the good fortune, and are certainly grateful to have skied or ridden with them. We have been participants in their clinics and benefited from their dedication to and knowledge of teaching skiing or snowboarding. If the opportunity arises to attend a clinic or event with one of them, sign up. You will be thankful and look forward to the next time.

1. Jenny MacArthur has been hired as the Training and Education Manager for the upcoming season. She reported that she has been working with the committees to get all education materials updated and that a new Professional Development Series is being developed. It will be similar to the Master Teacher Program currently in use in PSIA-E. 2. Jonathan Ballou reported that the Alpine committee’s goal for the upcoming season is to not make major changes in the products. The level 3 retake day will be held with the level 3 ski day for those taking the exam the first time. 3. A new format for smaller Alpine level 3 exams will be developed. 4. The Alpine examiner selection process will be standardized with audits and a completed professional development portfolio. 5. The Nordic committee reported that they will be using the existing Technical Foundations clinic and possibly the Teaching Theory clinic as prerequisites for the level 2/3 exam beginning in the 2009/2010 season. 6. The Adaptive committee reported that their certification processes will remain the same. They will be using the Technical Foundations clinic. 7. The Children’s committee reported that there will be a Kid’s Academy this season as a 3-day event with the option to attend single days. 8. The new Children’s Manual published by PSIA will not be necessary for Children’s Accreditation in the 2008/09 season. They anticipate revising their education materials for 2009/2010 using the new manual. 9. A core of indoor presenters will be developed for the Technical Foundations, Teaching Theory and Movement Analysis products. 10. There will be a $5 per day increase in clinic and exam fees. Fee for the written exam will now be $25. 11. PSIA-Rocky Mountain will provide funding to PSIA for help in printing the new Adaptive Snowboard Guide which was originally published by PSIA-RM. 12. The Adaptive MA video will be edited and made available to member schools for instructor training. A new Adaptive MA video will be made for use in the exams. 13. Michael Donovan and Teresa Day were granted lifetime membership. 14. The Technical Foundations clinic will be revised for use by all disciplines. 15. Commemorative pins for 5, 10 and 15 year members will be given to all members with those years of membership as determined for the 2008/09 season. 16. Details of the SWOT analysis were presented. 17. The budget for PSIA-Rocky Mountain-AASI was presented, revised and approved. 18. The budget for Rocky Mountain Ski Instructors Educational Foundation was presented, revised and approved. 19. The Member School Management committee was dissolved and its duties will be handled by the new Member School Board committee. 20. All Board committees met, drew up two items on which to focus and will report progress at the next meeting which will be held October 18th, 2008.
Scholarship Recipients Troy Widener, son of Melinda Cain-Widener, was awarded a $500 Educational Foundation scholarship. He begins graduate studies at Colorado School of Mines this fall. Elise Krueger, daughter of Carolyn Krueger, was awarded a $500 Educational Foundation scholarship. She begins her freshman year at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

At Your Service By Dana Scronek Your…Executive Director Seems like just yesterday I was heading out on the snow in my “in the boot” mint green stretch pants about to teach my first lesson. I was 15 at the time and if you had told me then that I would be working for one of the largest divisions of PSIAAASI as the Executive Director I would never have believed it. Why? Because I was going to be an examiner and RULE the world!! Unfortunately no one told me you have to be a really good skier to be an examiner nor did they tell me I was less than stellar on skis. So since that didn’t work out I decided to settle for this. I am only kidding…note to yourself, I am usually kidding that’s what I do. So what have we been doing all summer other then eating bonbons and floating down the river? We have been working hard and are excited to announce that the RM Division is launching the NEW Professional Development Series. It is a program designed to offer an additional or alternative option to certification. Its focus is on education and job specific training. Your Snowsports School Directors, the Board of Directors and the Committees have spent years discussing the need for a program like this. This year it comes to fruition. Although Jenny MacArthur (our new Education and Training Manager, welcome Jenny!) discusses the program I can’t help but let you all know how very excited I am about it. As a past director and having presented clinics for a similar program in the east I know the potential it brings to everyone who takes part. Your experiences with the clinics will make your job easier and more fun, you will communicate better with your clients, build your return business and become an even better teacher because of understanding more in depth how it all works. There is truly no longer a dead end in your education as an instructor…it only gets better from here! For all you 5, 10 and 15 year membersthis year, to honor your dedication and longevity as a member of PSIA-Rocky Mountain-AASI, we will be sending you each a Commemorative Rocky Mountain Pin. I would like to thank Billy Nowell,

who recently proposed this fantastic idea to the board and the Board of Directors for accepting the proposal. Billy will be receiving his 10 year pin this fall, join me in congratulating him. Shhh it’s a secret…a Secret Stash Special Order clinic that is. New this year will be clinics made to order. Are you a resort that does not have an Examiner or TA on staff and you want to attain certification? Maybe there is someone on Ed Staff that inspires you and you want to ski/ride with him/her. Whatever your needs, you can get stuff from the secret stash. The cost, which includes everything, will be $350 a day. This is not to be mistaken for a Traveling Clinic. Traveling clinics will still be available if you want one of our regular offerings at your home area, i.e. if you want to receive clinic credit and pay the $75 per day per person amount. All Traveling Clinic requests and Special Order Clinics need to come through your Snowsports School Director/Training Manager and can only be guaranteed if done so by Nov 15th. The Curriculum Guide is almost done! Clare Browne, our new Events Coordinator (welcome aboard Clare!), has been busy putting together the event calendar for the 2008-09 season. It should be available online by the end of September. Some changes that you may notice will be that we have condensed the events so as to offer multidiscipline events at one location. The reason this was so important was because we want you to be able to carpool and share lodging and expenses for events. Remember we are all snow bums and none of us have money so we realize how taxing the events can be on your wallet. You may also notice more ITC’s then ever before. We offered every member school that wanted one a home area ITC to cut down on your expenses while acquiring your most important certification. I would like to thank John James, Karen Frei, Scott Anfang, Bobby Palm and Barb Szwebel for the incredible amount of work they put into the new Adaptive Snowboard Guide. Even better news Rocky Mountain has teamed up with National and several other divisions to co-write a national guide that will hopefully be available in January. Until then, you can access the RM guide via the website at www.psia-rm.org If you saw a dollar bill on the street would you pick it up? Then why would you not take advantage of the many scholarships, we have available? For

years and for different reasons, scholarships have been set up to fund the different needs of the membership. Enclosed you will find an article by Travis Crooke about his experience based on the Jim Riley Scholarship he received. I know Travis quite well and I know if he saw a dollar, he’d pick it up and put it towards his training. I have to apologize as it was an oversight that I failed to congratulate everyone who tried out for the National Team at Mammoth Resort in April. Rocky Mountain was well represented with 49 Alpine, Snowboard, and Nordic instructors attending. Although in my eyes they were all successful, Bobby Murphy, Nick Herrin, David Oliver and Jim Schanzenbaker made the Alpine team, Charlie MacArthur and Ross Matlock made the Nordic team and Scott Anfang, Eric Rolls and Gregg Davis made the Snowboard team. Congratulations guys! Well that’s all folks but before I go, let me say as I approach my one year anniversary, I would like to take a moment and thank everyone who contributes to this division. Do you know the saying “it takes a village to raise a child”? Having been involved in an organization such as this where the vision and direction in which we go is inspired by the hard work of a team of volunteers that is comprised of our Board and Committees, I can relate all to well to that saying. Because of this army of volunteers their passion and vision will guide this division into a new era. In the years to come you will see our offerings of products move in a new direction. A direction that will provide you access to the tools you need to be better communicators and educators. You will be excited about and crave the learning process. You are PSIA-AASI and we are here to serve you.
My Quest for TA thanks to the Jim Riley Scholarship By Travis Crooke - Steamboat CO - Level 3 Trainers Accredited
The Jim Riley Memorial Scholarship is a grant offered through PSIA that is intended to assist in the development of teaching credentials of regional instructors. Last April, I was granted a portion of this grant, which allowed me to be a candidate at the Trainers Accreditation (TA) try-outs held in Breckenridge. The scholarship was the deciding factor that solidified my attendance, but I had been preparing for it from the moment I earned my level III certification. I want to thank the Jim Riley Fund and PSIA for their assistance and discuss the scholarship so others can capitalize on the fund. I am also going to outline the path I took to prepare and succeed at this event so that others aspiring to this level can develop a plan as well. Fortunately, the regional PSIA office is located in my resort town of Steamboat. They have grown to recognize my face around those parts because I generally pop in there a dozen or so times throughout the ski season. Everybody has acted as an insightful mentor when choosing events to attend and for that, I am grateful. Many of them have been instructors, supervisors, and trainers in the ski industry, so they understand the financial strain that PSIA career growth can impart upon a starving instructor such as myself. While at the office one day, Dana Scronek, our executive director, suggested I apply for a scholarship. I did not even know these existed, and was elated to discover I qualified for the Jim Riley Scholarship. Jim Riley was a lawyer and fellow ski instructor deeply involved in developing the PSIA-RM organization. He offered his legal expertise to create the by-laws of the organization and was a lifetime member of PSIA. One thousand dollars is available annually through his grant and it is intended to be used to assist in the costs of furthering one’s education in the ski instruction industry. I discovered the scholarship in December, but I began my bid for TA much earlier. In fact, I completed my alpine level III in April of 2006 and immediately set my sights on the
next stage of my development. The ’06 – ’07 season was spent developing clinics for my resort and gaining experience leading clinics on various topics such as freeriding and racing. I gave myself two years to prepare for the TA exam because I understood that I had a lot to transform in my personality and skiing before I could confidently send candidates to exams.
The first and third day comprised of evaluated ski maneuvers. TAs should be able to demonstrate any maneuver on a level I, II, or III exam, so most tasks at the TA exam incorporate a blending of multiple skills to evaluate many aspects of a candidate in a short period of time.
There are two mandatory clinics one must attend before going to TA. In addition, there are a few supplemental offerings. I highly recommend any preparatory options to which you have access. It helps finetune your strengths and alerts you of your weaker areas. In addition, you establish rapport with your clinic leaders, which in all likelihood will be examiners at TA. This in turn reinforces your dedication to the organization in their eyes.
The second day of skiing entailed a full day of clinic leading where candidates were evaluated on their ability to effectively lead a clinic that evokes noticeable change in fellow instructors. At the same time, examiners grade overall ski performance, demonstration techniques, cognitive focus, and professionalism. The second evening involved an indoor MA evaluation of a top level skier. The third day ended with indoor presentations of obscure ski topics. They were a pleasure to watch and extremely informative.
Most of my days of this past season involved wedge Christies and pivot slips. I would not trade it for anything, but I also don’t look forward to doing it again anytime soon. There was a week and a half between the time Steamboat closed and TA, so I packed my bags and moved to Breckenridge for a week to learn my way around the resort, train on the actual exam terrain, and subdue my social life so I could focus on my priorities. This last bit wasn’t easy as you fellow ski instructors know, but well, I handled it somehow.
In the end, 11 candidates passed. Unlike previous years, an overall score was the determining factor, instead of a specific passing score for each category. The idea behind this was to supply resorts with trainers that have specialties instead of trainers that are pretty good in all areas. This way, trainers can shine in their area of expertise and let other trainers that excel in other skills round out exam candidates. This new system holds candidates to a higher overall standard and encourages success in specialties they can take back to home resorts.
When exam day came, I was a lot less stressed than expected. I knew many of the candidates from various events throughout the season, and many of the examiners had also run those events. We were assigned our presentation and clinic teaching topics as we arrived. Then we booted up and went skiing!
I happened to be the last candidate to pass the exam. It’s been a long journey, but as I have discovered each time I expand my understanding, there is still so much to learn and do. I look forward to the future and working with the PSIA organization more. Thank you PSIA and Jim Riley for the scholarship and support. The Jim Riley scholarship is designed to help instructors succeed that would otherwise be financially limited, and in my case, it did just that. Thank you. All of the scholarships PSIA offers can be found on-line at http://www.psiarm.org/scholarships.php. They range from college grants to ski instruction education.
There is no way to conduct a truly objective ski exam. It’s an inherent fault in any test process. To help with the draw back, the examiners tried to rotate through stations and presentations so a large audience was evaluating the worth of each candidate. The exam lasted three days and two nights.

Before I jump in too deep with the goings on in the training and education realm of RM, I’m going to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Jenny MacArthur. I’ve been based out of Aspen Snowmass for the past six years and have been involved in the snowsports industry for more years than I care to admit! This passion of mine has taken me to 9 Snowsports Schools in 4 different countries in pursuit of the fluffy white stuff and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Last April I found myself in Mammoth at National Tryouts and while I didn’t make the cut, it was exciting to be on the same mountain as so many great athletes. There was some mind-boggling skiing and riding, making for some great eye candy. As the saying goes, “When one door closes, another opens” and here I am now, as Rocky Mountain’s Training and Education Manager. So, what’s going on in the Training and Education realm with PSIA/AASI - RM? Snowsport School Directors have been requesting that we offer courses that better meet the needs of the new age Snowsports Instructor. In response to this request, we have made two major changes this year. The first change relates to the way courses are offered to our members. We’ll begin with a question for you: How many courses did PSIA/AASI offer last season? a) 68 b) 95 c) 127 d) None of the Above I was surprised to learn that PSIA/AASI offered 127 courses. In the past, these courses have been listed by discipline and most members look only to their discipline for courses available. We have identified current courses that have cross discipline relevance and grouped them together to help build diversity in the way you teach and interact with the clients. This year’s curriculum guide lists all the educational courses considered to be cross discipline and job specific under the Professional Development Guide. We would encourage you to begin to expand your knowledge. Next time you’re selecting a course for your clinic credits; – choose from the expanded menu offering you courses from all disciplines. The second change is the launching of The Professional Development Series which will offer you the opportunity to earn a Bachelor or Masters Degree in Snowsports Instruction. This pathway is open to members with a minimum prerequisite of PSIA/AASI Level 2. Anyone choosing to pursue the Professional Development path will be required to take a series of core courses and elective courses. We believe these offerings will round out your education while you reach the number of credits (20) required. All courses, ‘Core’ and ‘Elective’ will be available to all disciplines of snowsports. Learn more about the Professional Development Pathway in the curriculum guide, available online www.psia-rm.org by the end of September. We are excited to announce that in addition to the existing courses, we have a few new courses including Communication and Relationship Building, X Discipline, Adaptive Mania, and The Whole of It Broken Down. That’s it for the moment – it’s time to get out and enjoy these late summer days.
Kid’s Konnection Shawn McDermott
Hi everybody, well the summer is passing and it’s time to get ready for an adventurous, exciting winter. We hope you were able to spend some time this summer getting ready for some of the new things that you will be hearing and observing from some of your students. Here are some questions for you. Anybody know who “Wall-E” is? What about the characters from “Kung Fu Panda”? Are you up to speed on Hannah Montana? Who are these guys, the Jonas Bros? Yes, we are an outdoor sport, however we have the opportunity to take materials provided from various types of media and

transform them into teaching tools that can meet the individual needs of our students. Going along with this, we want to help you fill and understand how to use your own “toolbox” this season by offering the return of the RM Kid’s Academy. We recommend this event for anyone, from rookies to ski school trainers who are looking to go beyond the norm in “filling their toolbox”. Use it to build the greatest adventure that you can provide for your students. This seasons Kid’s Academy will be a 3 day event with the availability to attend individual days if desired. We’ll get you hooked into the newest evolution of kids thinking. Be on top of the introduction of the new PSIA Children’s Manual with an afternoon session led by a special guest speaker. Each day will build on the previous to enhance your teaching abilities and coach you on how you can develop and build successful lesson plans that

you own. Please read this seasons curriculum guide for details on this event, as well as other products offered by the RM Children’s Education Training Team. Also this season, for those of you that spend a lot of time with upper level kid’s classes, or just want to learn the details of teaching upper level kid’s for privates or groups, we will be offering our “Master of Kid’s Levels 8 & 9” clinics. This is a great clinic that is a ton of fun, with a great mix of teaching methodology and mountain exploration. Don’t forget, our events are multi discipline, we don’t discriminate. We welcome members no matter what “tool” they are riding on. So, we look forward to seeing many of you on the slopes this season and “Remember, Be a Kid, You’ll have more fun!”
NEW COURSES for the PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES MANAGING SPLITS AND THE FAMILY PRIVATE Prerequisite: PSIA/AASI Level 1 Credits: 2 Days: 2 Fee: $150.00 This two day on-snow clinic will focus on strategies for managing splits in a group or a family private. Topics will include: • Setting yourself up for success – goal setting; who wants what, and who’s in charge? Who ultimately has the say in what goes on – Dad? Mom? The kids? You? • Terrain choices – Minimize terrain and maximize the challenge • Breaking the ice – conversation starters for the whole family rather than the family spokesperson • Managing that individual that wants more than their fair share of the attention; • Facilitating change with different levels COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIP BUILDING Prerequisite: PSIA/AASI – Membership Credits: 2 Days: 2 Fee: $150.00 This two day clinic is designed to share with you the communication and relationship building skills necessary to turn reluctant lesson takers into passionate learners and skiers. We will share skills to enable you to break the ice, find common ground, turn a conversation from you back to the client and develop relationships that last beyond the end of that first lesson. This clinic will provide you with the skills to develop a return clientele like the best of them. This is an onsnow clinic. This clinic is delivered in a coaching style so you will be skiing a lot. You will lap through a designated trail and receive individual coaching based on the changes you are implementing. Be ready to see, feel and own some major changes after these two days! THE HISTORY OF SKIING
Prerequisite: PSIA/AASI – Membership Credits: 1 Days: 1 Fee: $75.00 During this course you will compare traditional and contemporary techniques and how they have developed over the years and how they have contributed to the current generation of skiers. We will identify the constants, such as anatomy and physics, the variables of grooming and equipment and the universal variables of speed, radius and terrain and their effects on technique through the ages. ALPINE FREESTYLE FIESTA Prerequisites: PSIA/AASI Certified Level 1. Credits: 2 Days: 2 Fee: $150.00 This clinic will be broken up into four sessions (2 mornings and 2 afternoons). These four sessions will consist of rails, jumps, halfpipe and flatland. The latest teaching concepts and methodologies will be utilized as we move from beginner through to advanced maneuvers. You will receive feedback to improve your personal skiing and gain confidence as we explore rails, jumps, halfpipe and flatland. REACHING AND TEACHING CHALLENING STUDENTS Prerequisites: PSIA/AASI membership Credits: 2 Days: 2 Fee: $150.00 Learn to identify individuals with special needs and what they need to be successful in our snowsports school. We have them mainstreamed in our classes and may not even know it. Learn to choose the appropriate teaching styles and learning style to create some sort of pattern or symmetry to the chaos of balancing in motion. DESIGNED for instructors of ALL DISCIPLINES. This clinic is based on the book called Freak, Geeks, and Aspergers.
Credits: 2 Days: 2 Fee: $150.00 What is it really like to experience snowsports with a physical disability? Now you can experience it for yourself. In this clinic you will learn what it takes to sit down and ski propelling yourself with the strength of your arms, or ski on one leg. Outriggers, mono-ski, bi-ski, and sliders – please come out and experience the equipment that enables our physically disabled peers to enjoy the mountains. X-DISCIPLINE Prerequisites: PSIA/AASI membership Credits: 2 Days: 2 Fee: $150.00
Explore the similarities and differences of snowboard, alpine and telemark sliding and the movements required to ride ‘em! Increase your knowledge of other sliding sports so that you can coach a guest that “drops in” to your group, even if they’re not on your riding tool! Develop your ability to recognize the basic movement patterns that facilitate good sliding & riding, whatever the tool. Participants are encouraged to bring two sets of equipment, i.e. your predominant choice of equipment and then a second set from one of the other two, either snowboard/alpine, alpine/telemark, or telemark/snowboard. HALF PIPE IMPROVEMENT CLINIC Prerequisites: AASI Level One Certified Credits: 2 Days: 2 Fee: 150.00
This is your opportunity to develop your skills in the Half Pipe. Whether you are a novice looking for more comfort with rhythm and flow or an advanced pipe rider trying to increase your amplitude and repertoire of tricks, this clinic is open to all. This exciting, fun and fast moving clinics, will help you hone the skills you need in the half pipe to achieve those personal goals. You will be exposed to learning progressions, and techniques through video analysis and personal coaching all whilst riding some of the best pipes in our division. This clinic is designed to take your pipe riding to the next level.

National Rendezvous Early season training and great fun
Patti Banks, Nordic chairperson. Have trouble finding the time to take a PSIA clinic? Want to try something new? If the answer is yes then come to our Nordic Rendezvous!!!!! It’s a great way to jump-start your season by getting personal feedback on your Telemark or Cross Country skiing, or simply learn a new discipline while meeting other great people. December 2nd and 3rd is the Cross Country skiing part of the Rendezvous held at the Frisco Nordic Center. This Cross Country portion is open to nonmembers of PSIA as well as its members. If you have never done any track skiing,

this is a great opportunity to learn from some of the best coaches RM has to offer. Cross country skiing is a great aerobic workout and it dials in your ability to balance on some very skinny skis. The clinics offered at this year’s Rendezvous are: Ski Improvement in both classic and skate, Learn To classic or skate, Teaching Tips, as well as video analysis. Classic and skate clinics are offered both days. Rental gear is available at the Frisco Nordic center (970- 668-0866). December 4th and 5th is the Telemark portion of the Rendezvous, which is held at Breckenridge Ski Resort. This year, we’re offering: Learn to Telemark, Tele Ski Improvement for all levels, as well as a Tele Level 1 Prep Clinic. Video analysis is also available. If you get bored with skiing early season with only groomed runs open, tele skiing will keep you challenged on the groomers as well as working on all skills needed for alpine skiing and even some for snowboarding. I hope this article finds everybody enjoying a healthy and fun summer. As you begin to wrap up your summer activities and watch the leaves change color, I hope you are getting as excited about the upcoming season as we are. After a busy summer of planning, we have continued to develop our curriculum offerings. New this season is a half pipe improvement clinic. This clinic will focus on improving your skills in the pipe from beginner all the way through to advanced. We recognize that not everyone has the opportunity to ride the pipe that much, especially since some of you may work at resorts that don’t have a pipe. We have found that when some folks go to either a certification prep clinic or a freestyle accred clinic, some of you want to spend the majority of the time in the pipe. And while we would love to spend all day in the pipe with you, this can be difficult at these events because we also need to spend time on other facets of the exam process. This event will be the answer. You will get some excellent coaching with progressions and video analysis to help improve your pipe riding. Lastly we recognize that this season most of you will be very busy with the lack of the international employees and most of the schools may be under staffed. Please look at the schedule as soon as you can and plan accordingly. Get those last rides on that mountain bike in and prepare those legs for another long season of epic powder days. National Report Fall 2008 Peter Donahue-ASEA Representative
The past year has been one of furious activity for the ASEA, the American Snowsports Education Association, and our national affiliate. Despite the budgetary setbacks requiring this year’s dues increase, the national office staff has done an extraordinary job bringing numerous projects to fruition, while adding many more to the pipeline. What this means to you, our individual member, is greater value from PSIA/AASI in the form of improved manuals and publications, new and updated online resources, and new and renewed relationships with national suppliers and sponsors. Here is a summary:
PROJECTS AND MATERIALS: • A completely redesigned magazine, 32 Degrees, employing a cross discipline format for our increasingly multi-discipline certified membership. • An all new website to go live this fall, providing a better user interface for online catalog shopping, document research, and links to an extensive and growing list of Sponsors/industry partners for members-only purchases. • The Movement Matrix online resource. Check out psia.org for the latest video resource library. For a $14.95 annual membership fee, you gain access to an extensive array of video clips, drills, and exercises, cross-referenced to provide situation-specific information for teaching. Wondering what to do with that multi-day class on their first powder day? Log on. • Snowboard and Nordic versions of the Matrix coming this fall, and ongoing additions to all versions provided through partnership with our divisions. • Cues to effective/ ineffective teaching card set. Get a Clue will receive broader distribution this year through our partnership with Subaru. • AMGA (American Mountain Guides Association) partnership. The PSIA Nordic Team spearheaded a partnership with AMGA to create an Instructor’s Ski Guide Course, designed for skiers and riders to learn skills for guiding out of bounds tours accessible from ski resorts. PSIA/AASI Level III certification is a course pre-requisite. Check out the AMGA website this fall for details on where courses will be offered. • Renewed Sponsorship/Supplier agreements with Swix, Blizzard/Tecnica Booster Strap, Burton/Red/Anon, Bushnell (Bolle), Dale, Duofold, Dynastar/Lange, Elan/Dalbello, Grabber, Leki, Nordica, Reusch, Rossignol, Swany,Volkl/Marker, and Rudy Project, not to mention our strong relationships with Patagonia and Subaru who signed multi-year contracts last year. Additionally, new Official Suppliers signed on for multi-year agreements: POC (helmets eyewear, protection), Salomon, Todi (footware), Turtle Fur, Twenty-Two Designs (Telemark bindings), Purl Wax, and The Skier’s Edge Company. EVENTS: • National Academy: Visiting national team members from Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and Argentina was the highlight last April, with evening presentations about their national teaching systems. This year’s proposal is to create a National Children’s Education Track. The Divisional children’s program directors will meet in early October for a planning session. • The AASI Rider Rally: The Rally enters its second year as a national event and is scheduled for Taos next spring. Mark your calendars; this will be a stellar event! • The PSIA-AASI Teams selection: Held every four years, this year’s selection was held for the first time at Mammoth Mt. California in April/May, and it was the largest and most diverse selection to date. The new PSIA Alpine Team includes one Park and Pipe specialist, and our own David A.
