ow personally I get why people are anti-facebook and tweeting because the fact that you just ate a great lunch at the corner deli or that you are tired and going to bed may seem like useless information to them. As a nation where we are maxed out and time deprived as is, they can’t fathom why people waste their own time and everyone connected to their messages time on a message that has zero content. As the Executive Director of an organization with almost 7000 members this kind of miss use and over use of these communication venues quite frankly bums

me out. WHY? Because we do have important things to tell you and we want your attention. If I had a dollar for every call I got where a member said “I never got that email, so I didn’t know”, only to find out they had selected “do not receive emails from PSIA” button, I’d be rich. When that message was the third reminder to pay your dues on time, you’d be rich having had the opportunity to avoid the late fee. Or perhaps there was a clinic or exam you had been dying to attend in your area and because you didn’t take a few minutes to read the eblast you missed
that we had added one to the calendar. If you took the time to read these three paragraphs and want to be sure that you get pertinent information relative to your profession such as pro discounts, scholarships, educational opportunities and informative articles then PLEASE take a minute to visit thesnowpros.org and update your information. Be sure we have your correct contact information including your ski and snowboard school affiliation, please click to “allow” e-mail communications, become our facebook fan and I’ll promise to never post the status, “I’m working late tonight. Membership with Benefits By Dave Schuiling
E
very June, after most of the snow has melted, we as members of PSIA-RMAASI pay our dues to the association that acknowledges and supports our commitment to snowsports education. Those of us that are certified maintain our certification through our membership and continuing education. Our association is recognized worldwide as a snowsports education leader. As professional instructors, membership provides us with legitimate trade credentialing that defines a trained, experienced instructor that will most likely provide our guests with the ultimate, on-snow learning experience. Yet, many members call into the office in June struggling with the necessity to throw down their dues payment long after the lifts have stopped turning and well before the snow begins to fly again. Go ahead and ask the question; “what have my dues done for me lately?” Yeah, there are some really killer deals to be had as a member but what truly matters to me is described in a little walk down memory lane. As an exercise, you may also ponder why you joined in the first place to see how your feelings have evolved since then. And it goes a little something like this… Five years ago, if you had asked me what I’d be doing, I never would have dreamed that I’d be working in the PSIA-RM-AASI office or even living in Steamboat. In fact, in 2006 I wasn’t even a dues paying member of our association. Between 2004 and 2008, although I continued to teach and train occasionally at my home mountain, I became very distracted with life in general and placed my PSIA/AASI membership at the bottom of my priorities list. In fact, it completely fell of the list! Like many of you, my priorities dramatically shifted as my wife and I focused all of our attention on our first baby; a retail specialty snowboard shop in downtown Telluride. The demands of this 24/7 endeavor pulled me quickly off the slopes from full time teaching where I was one the most requested and highest priority instructors. One store became two, and for added excitement we began to have real babies of our own, Sammy in 2000 and Andy in 2003. Call me masochistic, but in 2007 we opened
a third store location in Montrose, CO. Well the rest is history as we all know what began in 2007 and 2008 with the spiraling economy. As Kramer from Seinfeld said so eloquently; “retail is for suckers.” However, before we decided to look into some serious life changes, I had already missed a very significant element in my life that defined my passion and ultimately my life’s calling. I missed teaching. I missed the network of enthusiastic snowsports professionals truly living the dream of passing on their passion to others. I missed the challenge of connecting with a broad, limitless collection of personalities igniting the spark to achieve, expand and excel in snowsports sliding. I had distanced myself from the club that defined my existence as an educator. This was not a sudden epiphany and I was way too young for a mid-life crisis! The gut feeling had been gnawing away at me the moment I stopped teaching full time and disconnected from the network, the club, my association. During the summer of 2008, I called the PSIA-RM-AASI office and begged for mercy from our resident and 16 year staff historian, Carolyn Kreuger (Director of Operations). Remember me? I said. Thankfully she had remembered me, because back in the day I had not taken my membership involvement lightly. In fact one would call me absolutely insane for ever letting my membership lapse. I had achieved Level 3 certification in Alpine, Snowboard and Telemark as well as Snowboard Examiner and Alpine Divisional Clinic Leader (Examiner 1). Go ahead, do the math on that! I was relieved to learn that under our current policies and procedures, I could pay back dues and late fees for four years, update my continuing educational credits and I would be able to keep my hard earned certifications. I happily scraped together that amount and signed up for fall training! I was back and fully immersed in an organization that supported what I love to do best, share my excitement for snowsports with others. Looking back now, I got involved because it seemed like a cool way to spend a season, get a ski pass and barely scrape rent together PSIA-RM/AASI SUMMER 2011
each month. Actually, I had two other jobs to help! Certification training was something to do when I didn’t get a lesson. Sure, I’ll go ski or snowboard with other ripping sliders! What a concept. The more I trained, taught and went through certifications, the more I found myself connecting with more and more people. I was totally hooked, a junkie for knowledge and experience and I sought for all that could be delivered. Back then, I never really considered certification advancement for a pay raise. I made a point to clinic and take exams outside of my home area. Heck, what a deal! I can get a clinic and lift ticket at a completely different, cool mountain for less than the daily lift ticket price? Sign me up. The more I networked with colleagues from other ski areas, the more couches and floor real estate became available to me. As the saying goes, I was living the dream. In my hunger for knowledge and experience, I began to branch out into the other sliding disciplines. Little did I know it, but I was gaining the experience and versatility needed to take my teaching to another level. Suddenly, I was extremely busy; in fact, complete strangers were calling from all over the world to take lessons from me, for weeks at a time. I was helping and encouraging other instructors to achieve their professional goals and was riding the almighty Rocky Mountain high. This natural progression helped me become the most requested instructor at my resort and aided in earning “Instructor of the Year.” A Cinderella story? Maybe. Just like Rocky Balboa, I worked extremely hard to achieve my goals and I can’t begin to put a price tag on the value of my membership and involvement in PSIA-AASI. I’m very proud to say that I’ll be receiving my 20 year pin this upcoming season. Although difficult to put into words, your membership gains access to a wide range of benefits and services, offering tremendous value and national brand recognition, recognized by snowsports schools throughout the country and world. Much of what I described above is the intangible value of membership, but if you explore the websites of Rocky Mountain www.psia-rm.org and National www.thesnowpros.org , you can find many of the tangible benefits of our products, services and sponsorships. For one last exercise, I’ll use myself (again) as an example. Over the years I’ve taken advantage of some of the
proform offerings from our industry partners. Remember what Kramer says about retail? Here are a few highlights. Burton snowboard boots (50%), Smith goggles and sunglasses (50%), Gibbon Slackline (50%), Patagonia Capeline (40%), Booster Strap (40%), Leki Poles (50%), GoPro HD Camera (50%).
That’s a savings of roughly $600 which covers 6 years of my current annual membership dues. Buy yourself a Subaru from your local dealership and realize roughly $3000 off the invoice price. Now for the one million dollar question… What is the value of MY membership with PSIA/AASI? Priceless! A

SUMMER 2011 PSIA-RM/AASI 5
National Membership Benefits and Value By Peter Donahue, National Board Representative
A
ny reasonable person might ask, indeed should ask, how the American Snowsports Education Association, the A.S.E.A. our national affiliate, serves our Rocky Mountain PSIA/AASI membership. What does the national association actually do with half of your membership dues? “ I wrote those words for this column five years ago this month, but they are just as important today as they were then, perhaps more so given the efforts of the national board and staff to define and improve upon the benefit of national membership. The original purpose of the national association was to promote consistency in education and certification nationwide. This was to be accomplished by offering resources, materials and support to the seven, now nine, regional associations that had evolved into being during the previous decades. The idea was to provide services to meet the needs of the combined national membership on a scale that would be difficult or impossible for the regional associations to develop on their own. These would include areas beyond regional scope, such as national marketing and promotion, and developing standards and best practices agreed upon across divisions. In so doing, the organization would build consistency and recognition for the professional instructor across the country to benefit our members and the skiing public. At the time of the founding of the organization as the Professional Ski Instructors of America in 1961, membership in the national association was voluntary, and only certified divisional members could join. It wasn’t until 1970 that the organizational format of the association was changed. Divisional and national memberships were combined to take advantage of the opportunity to improve member service and promote consistency in certifications across the country. In October of 2007 the association conducted a national strategic meeting of divisional and national leadership. The attendees consisted of division presidents, executive directors, the national board, executive director, and staff. Three days together defining the complementary roles of the divisions and 6
national association produced an unprecedented agreement on areas of responsibility and ways to improve collaboration and consolidation of effort. The divisions do a tremendous job of providing you with fun, job specific training and certification from a highly qualified professional, personable, and passionate education and administrative staff. They provide access to a familiar individual on the other end of the line and a larger, grass roots conduit for the creative energy of our dedicated volunteers. The national association ensures that the value of those programs is recognized within our larger industry, and provides the infrastructure and facilitation that the divisions need to provide consistent service across the country. Specifically the national organization has committed to: • Procuring and maintaining a national database to take full advantage of the strength of our combined membership of over 31,000. • Providing related accounting and reporting services to enhance efficiencies, record keeping, and developing consistent policies and procedures association wide. • Developing the national website: thesnowpros.org, with coming links to divisional
pages, improving member access to pro-deals from sponsors, developing a searchable course catalog and consistent course registration process, streamlining education/certification reciprocity across divisions, and providing easy access to educational materials, on-line resources such as the Matrix, and to our snowsports colleagues through the Community. • Creating a Strategic Education Plan that will revise national certification standards, working with divisional representatives to provide quality assurance for certification and education credentials. • Initiating the process to seek accreditation for our credentialing programs (Exams and Certificate programs like the Children’s Specialist) with accrediting agencies such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA) to ensure the full recognition of our credentials in our industry and among other professional associations. • Working with divisional representatives to develop nationally recognized specialist programs (as was done with the Children’s Specialist, and is in progress with Freestyle Specialist). • Developing strong relationships with the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), and the Ski Industries of America (SIA), and with our large and growing pool of sponsors and suppliers to ensure that your hard earned credentials gain value and the respect that they deserve. With these benefits in mind, is it worth paying dues to a national organization in addition to those for your division? With growth of nearly 15% in our membership since I wrote on this topic in 2006 I’m guessing that the answer is yes, but you will have the opportunity to answer for yourself in the coming months. The national association along with the divisions will begin a focused program to collect more detailed information about the needs and motivations of our members. Stay tuned for the opportunity to participate in member surveys on a variety of topics this fall. A PSIA-RM/AASI SUMMER 2011
