BOB & DOLORES HOPE It was said of Hope that “if he could live his life over again, he wouldn’t have time.” In the words of John Steinbeck, “It is impossible to see how he can do so much, can cover so much ground, can work so hard and be so effective. But when the dreamers were Hollywood icon Bob Hope and his wife, Dolores, in collaboration with revered Modernist architect John Lautner, the home they created is something simply ethereal. The vast, outdoor covered terrace can accommodate 300 guests—and often did when the Hopes entertained— while all around the estate are adornments and amenities, from exquisite gardens, a waterfall and pond to a putting green, tennis court and pool. The largest private residence ever designed by Lautner, the Hope property is the ultimate expression of his aesthetic: “The purpose of architecture is to create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities of life.” Today, it stands as a philosophy—and a dream—perfectly realized.
