esigned exclusively for the Hope Family by John Lautner. The home is approximately 23,000 square feet of incredibly and impeccably designed concrete, steel and glass structure encapsulated by a vast curving copper roof. Seen from throughout the valley, the home blends with the surrounding mountains. Situated at the top of Southridge, the home overlooks the entire Coachella Valley with views of the Banning Pass to the North and Mount San Jacinto to the West. The Hope Residence is the largest private residence designed by John Lautner.

“The purpose of architecture is to create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities of life.” – John Lautner

BOB & DOLORES HOPE It was said of Hope that “if he could live his life over again, he wouldn’t have time.” In the words of John Steinbeck, “It is impossible to see how he can do so much, can cover so much ground, can work so hard and be so effective. There’s a man. There really is a man.” But he didn’t do it alone… Deeds always trumpet louder than words and Dolores Hope was the embodiment of that adage. Her life has been an example of doing generous acts to elevate and improve the lives of others. Dolores spent most of her life giving to others: her husband, Bob Hope, her children Linda, Tony, Kelly and Nora; her four grandchildren; and numerous charitable causes.

JOHN LAUNTER Lautner was one of last century’s important contemporary American architects. His work was concerned with the relationship of the human being to space and of space to nature. “Shelter,” he said, “is the most basic human need.”

HOPE + LAUTNER : PALM SPRINGS ABOUT THE HOPE RESIDENCE: The term “dream home” is used so frequently, it has almost become a cliché. But when the dreamers were Hollywood icon Bob Hope and his wife, Dolores, in collaboration with revered Modernist architect John Lautner, the home they created is something simply ethereal. A true landmark sitting high atop the exclusive Southridge community, overlooking the Coachella Valley with panoramic views northward to Banning Pass and Mount San Jacinto to the west, the extraordinary property was completed in 1980. It was the Hopes’ third home in Palm Springs. And the one they called their “dream house.” In bringing their vision to reality, the Hopes and Lautner composed a stunning, structural symphony blending concrete, steel and glass, crowned by a curving copper roof that complements the sloping contours of the neighboring mountains. Throughout the home’s more than 23,000 square feet, and the grounds that surround it, are features befitting a “contemporary castle,” as Dolores described the estate. Inside, murals by the famed painter Garth Benton ornament the bar where celebrities such as Tony Bennett gathered, as well as the spa with its indoor pool, hot tub and exercise area. A massive, natural boulder juts dramatically into the vast lower level entertaining area, and overhead, an expansive oculus at the center of the roof opens to the sky above the courtyard. The vast, outdoor covered terrace can accommodate 300 guests—and often did when the Hopes entertained— while all around the estate are adornments and amenities, from exquisite gardens, a waterfall and pond to a putting green, tennis court and pool. The largest private residence ever designed by Lautner, the Hope property is the ultimate expression of his aesthetic: “The purpose of architecture is to create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities of life.” Today, it stands as a philosophy—and a dream—perfectly realized.
