Nuclear Crisis on the Korean Peninsula : the Need for Preemptive Action of Peace

Questions that Need to be Raised to Resolve the Nuclear Conflict on the Korean Peninsula - The objectives behind the development of nuclear weapons and missiles of North Korea are to stabilize the regime’s power internally, to be recognized as a nuclear power by the international society (not sanctioned like the nuclear states outside the NPT), and to block and contain the US military reinforcements on the Korean Peninsula in case of emergency. It is a means to attain support for the security and economic development of their regime. The nuclear missiles have become a symbol of national security for North Korea, like the existence of the USFK and the ROK-US alliance in South Korea symbolizes national security. Can North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons, or are there any incentives or countermeasures to induce North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons? Can South Korea touch the issue of the USFK and the ROK-US alliance? - North Korea is on the verge of completing its nuclear force. In other words, the actual deployment of North Korea’s nuclear weapons is imminent. The Moon Jae-in administration has announced that the national agenda regarding the nuclear crisis is to prioritize negotiations for North Korea’s denuclearization and pursue a peace regime according to the progress of the denuclearization. The Government has also declared that it will lead the North’s denuclearization by building the South-North relations through inter-Korean dialogues, exchange and cooperation, taking the sanctions against North Korea into consideration. Are these goals and strategies based on the denuclearization of North Korea realistic? Do the conditions allow South Korea to pursue these measures and does it have the power to do so? If not, shouldn’t the measures for peace on the Korean Peninsula with this prerequisite be reformed? - Will there be military conflict, continued crisis, or a full-fledged transition? Solving the issue through military action on the Korean Peninsula is not an option. Without properly recognizing North Korea’s nuclear armament, it is also difficult to operate under the status quo of continued and strengthened sanctions and pressure to elicit North Korea’s capitulation. It will only repeat the policies that have failed until now. There are, of course, countries that benefit from the 1
