Think math is just counting and equations?

Today, math and statistics are crucial tools in science, engineering, and digital computing.

Our students in the mathematical sciences use their skills to do things like analyze and encrypt data, create biological and physical process models, and calculate risk.

If you think you might be interested in the mathematical sciences, check out these majors:

• Data Sciences

• Mathematics

• Statistics

The Eberly College of Science

is one of the most recognized and respected science colleges in the country.

Whether you know exactly which area of science you’d like to study, or if you’re still deciding what your major will be, the opportunities for you are endless. From finding a career path to spending a semester studying abroad, securing an internship or doing groundbreaking research with our faculty, you’ll discover which area of science is right for you.

Undergraduate Major Options in Mathematical Sciences

A variety of degree options allows you to tailor your education to match your goals and interests.

Data Sciences

Data scientists explore the methods, systems, and processes used to extract knowledge from data and turn these insights into discoveries, decisions, and actions. In this major, you can develop the knowledge and skills needed to manage and analyze large-scale, unstructured data to address an expanding range of problems in industry, government, and academia.

Degree Options

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

• Integrated B.S. in Data Sciences and M.A.S. in Applied Statistics Program Options (B.S.)

• Applied Data Sciences option (College of Information Sciences and Technology)

• Computational Data Sciences option (College of Engineering)

• Statistical Modeling Data Sciences option (Eberly College of Science)

You might like this program if

• you want to apply data analytics to strategic decision-making, and

• you are interested in statistics, mathematics, and the social sciences, and you want to combine them to understand what data can tell us.

Statistics

Statisticians use critical and abstract thinking to apply mathematical principles to statistical problems and combine modeling with computational skills to analyze data. In this major, you can explore a field that combines mathematics, computing, and analysis to better organize and understand data.

Degree Options

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

• Integrated B.S. in Statistics and M.A.S. in Applied Statistics Program Options (B.S.)

• Actuarial option

• Applied option

• Biostatistics option

• Graduate Studies option

• Statistics and Computing option

You might like this program if

• you enjoy working with numbers and data, and

• you are a problem solver who enjoys figuring out how things work or what data mean.

Mathematics

Theoretical mathematicians increase basic knowledge in “pure” fields like abstract algebra, analysis, and topology. Applied mathematicians use tools from calculus, analysis, computing, statistics, and operations research to solve problems in science, industry, government, and other areas. This major emphasizes careful analysis of problems, precision of thought and expression, and the development of mathematical skills.

Degree Options

• Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

• Integrated B.A. or B.S. in Mathematics and M.A.S. in Applied Statistics Program Options (B.S.)

• Actuarial Mathematics option

• Applied and Industrial option

• Computational Mathematics option

• General Mathematics option

• Graduate Study option

• Systems Analysis option

You might like this program if

• you want to have access to a wide variety of careers in the fields of science and technology, finance and risk analyisis, or research and industry.
