2017 PASTELS USA BEST OF SHOW Rita Romero, PSWC Santo
THE PASTEL SOCIETY of the WEST COAST welcomes you to the 31st Annual International Open Exhibition of “Pastels USA” A big thank you to the many talented artists who entered our exhibition. There were many exceptional paintings from artists from all over the United States as well as foreign countries. We would like to thank A SENSE OF PLACE GALLERY in Fresno, CA for holding our exhibition. Many thanks to GINNY BURDICK, owner of this gallery, for her expertise and for going above and beyond to make this exhibition a great success. Without our donors and sponsors, we would not be able to put together an exhibition of this prestige and magnitude. They continue to make “Pastels USA” a successful exhibition in support of our artists and Society.
From the President of The Pastel Society of the West Coast
A special thank you to LINDA ROEMISCH, our Ways and Means Chair, who makes our awards possible through the essential contacts with our donors and sponsors. Linda has served in this position for eleven years and has worked very hard to increase the awards to our very talented artists. We are especially pleased to announce that we have partnered with the Southwest Art Magazine. They are giving a full page ad as an award. They are also giving the accepted artists a discounted ad space. Those who chose to participate will be featured in an article about the Pastels USA to be released this fall. Our Jurors of Selection had the arduous task of selecting the Accepted paintings from the large number of submitted, excellent works. Thank you for your conscientious efforts in this difficult, decision making process. Our Jurors are: GIL DELLINGER, Aliso Viejo, CA, JEN EVENHUS, Wenatchee, WA, and TOM CHRISTOPHER, Eldora, IA. Special thanks to our Awards Judge, KIM LORDIER, for selecting those paintings in the exhibit that were deserving of extra recognition. Kim lives in Millbrae, CA. Thank you to TINA MOORE for helping me with the exhibition and being the Awards Chair for this event. A special thank you to JERRY BOYD for proofing the catalog, making the artists cards, and being our shipping agent. Thank you to MARIANNE HARRIS, our Publications Designer, who has designed the catalog for this exhibition. We also want to thank CYNTHIA RIORDAN, Publicity Chair, and LISA RICO and RITA ROMERO, Facebook Managers, for their efforts in publicizing this event. Thank you to our hard-working Board members: GINNY BURDICK, BONNIE GRIFFIN, TINA MOORE, LINDA ROEMISCH, CYNTHIA RIORDAN, RITA ROMERO, SABRINA HILL, RUSSELL FRANK, and MARGOT SCHULZKE, our founder who helps make Pastel Society of the West Coast the best of the best. This year to honor BOB GERBRACHT, our late Pastel Laureate, our scholarship is awarded to: AMBRIEHL
ZEPEDA-RUELAS.
My heartfelt thanks to all who gave of your time, resources, monetary or product gifts, and expertise to make “Pastels USA” possible. Sincerely SUSAN GOODMUNDSON President Pastel Society of the West Coast
about
Pastel
End of Season William Merritt Chase Pastel
Dancers Edgar Degas Pastel
Vincent Van Gogh Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Pastel
Pastel is not colored chalk. Pastel is pure pigment– the same pigment used in making all fine art paints. It is the most permanent of all media when applied to a permanent ground and properly framed. There is no oil to cause darkening or cracking, nor other substance or medium to cause fading or blistering. Pastels from the 16th Century exist today, as fresh and alive as the day they were painted! The following is a statement from the Pastel Society of America in New York: Pastel does not refer to pale colors, as the word is commonly used in cosmetic and fashion terminology. The name Pastel comes from the French word “pastische” because the pure, powdered pigment is ground into a paste, with a small amount of gum binder, and then rolled into sticks. The infinite variety of colors in the Pastel palette range from soft and subtle to bold and brilliant. An artwork is created by stroking the sticks of dry pigment across an abrasive ground, embedding the color in the “tooth” of the paper, sandboard or canvas. If the ground is completely covered with Pastel, the work is considered a Pastel painting; leaving much of the ground exposed produces a Pastel sketch. Techniques vary with individual artists. Pastel can be blended or used with visible strokes. The medium is favored by many artists because it allows a spontaneous approach. There is no drying time, and no allowances to be made for a change in color due to drying. Historically, Pastel can be traced back to the 16th century. Its invention is attributed to the German painter Johann Thiele. A Venetian woman artist, Rosalba Carriera was the first to make consistent use of Pastel. Chardin did portraits with an open stroke, while LaTour preferred the blended finish. Thereafter a galaxy of famous artists...Watteau, Copley, Delacroix, Millet, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard, Bonnard, Glackens, Whistler, Thomas Wilmer Dewing,William Merritt Chase... just to list the more familiarnames, used Pastel as finished work rather than preliminary sketches. Edgar Degas was the most prolific user of Pastel, and its champion. His protege, Mary Cassatt, introduced the Impressionists and Pastel to her friends in Philadelphia and Washington, and thus to the United States. In 1983, Sotheby Parke Bernet sold at auction two Degas Pastels for more than $3,000,000 each. Both Pastels were painted about 1880. Today, Pastel paintings have the stature of oil and watercolor as a major fine art medium. Many of our most renowned living artists have distinguished themselves in Pastel, and enriched the art world with this beautiful medium. As with any fine work of art or fine furniture, it is advised not to place a Pastel painting in direct sunlight. When under glass, the sun’s heat can create humidity which could cause moisture damage to develop. Whenever transported or not in a hanging position a Pastel painting should always be placed face up.

KIM LORDIER KIM LORDIER received a BFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco in 1989. Lordier’s paintings are in private collections throughout the country, and have been exhibited at the Autry Museum, Maynard Dixon Country, Coors Western Art Show in Denver, National Arts Club and Forbes Gallery in New York, Haggin Museum, Forbes Galleries, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Irvine Museum and the Laguna Art Museum. Her work has been showcased on the cover of Art of the West, Southwest Art, and The Pastel Journal, as well as featured in Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, American Artist and The Artist Magazine. Acknowledged by jurors and her peers, Kim has received recognition for her landscapes at major plein air events, international magazine competitions, national pastel society shows and museum exhibitions. She is a Signature Member of the California Art Club, the Pastel Society of America, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and a Distinguished Pastelist of the Pastel Society of the West Coast. A coveted workshop instructor, Kim leads workshops across the country.
Juror of Awards
Jury
of Selection Living in the Midwest has influenced TOM CHRISTOPHER’S style of painting and choice of subject matter significantly. Many of his pieces depict very common scenes he experienced. As a child, he spent his youth playing on the riverbanks and wooded areas in Central Iowa. Even today, he continues to be intrigued with nature and the way sunlight and shadows help define the landscape. He continues to spend countless hours hiking and photographing the rugged landscape along the Iowa River near his home. His goal is to paint relatively common scenes in a more dramatic and interesting way. For the past several years, he has worked primarily in pastels using a textured surface he developed. He continues to further explore pastel painting and look forward to many more years conducting workshops. Tom is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and an IAPS Master Circle Receipiant
JEN EVENHUS is naturally drawn to designs and movement found in nature and everyday experiences, capturing their essence with simplification and exaggeration in contemporary impressionist, expressionist and abstract paintings. Her work is known for its dynamic composition, bold use of color, and confident application of pastels and oils. Jen has become well-known for her 10-minute pastel paintings, which forces her to focus on composition, value, shapes and movement and most important, to not overwork, a great exercise she gives her workshop students. A Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America, a Distinquished Pastelist in the Northwest Pastel Society, an IAPS-Master Circle Member, and a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast, her work has been published in magazines such as the Pastel Journal, American Artist and PSA Pastelagram. You can find her work in the last several years’ April issues of Pastel Journal in the Pastel 100 section and as the Pastel Journal August 2016 cover artist with a 10-page article on florals.
One sculpture class was all it took for GIL DELLINGER to fall in love with art. He describes that college experience as the moment his life “caught fire,” and he’s been pursuing art ever since. A multi-talented artist perhaps best known for his seascapes, Gil is equally adept in three mediums, primarily using acrylics for his studio work but also working in oils or pastels when he paints on location. Being part of the larger artists’ community is important to Gil, which is why he has been involved with a number of esteemed arts organizations for many years. He is a past president and Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of America, a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, a Signature Member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and a Signature Member of the California Art Club. From seascapes to horses to vineyards to people, Gil Dellinger has dedicated himself to capturing the beauty and drama he sees all around him.

BOB GERBRACHT influenced hundreds of students over the course of almost 40 years of teaching. He had something to give that was special—great artistic skill and a genuine interest in helping his students improve. Anyone who ever watched him do a portrait demo knows what I am talking about. Tina Moore, past PSWC President and DP, attended several workshops with Bob and remembers him this way. “I love the twinkle in his eyes and the fact that he always knew exactly what to tell you to improve your painting. He was so giving of his time and had unending patience. He was by far the best teacher I have ever had.” According to PSWC Founder, Margo Schultzke, “Bob was key to the launching of the PSWC. He was our first demonstrator…adding right off to our credibility, at a critical point for our brand new society.” To honor Bob and his many accomplishments as an artist and teacher, the Pastel Society of the West Coast renamed our Scholarship Award, given annually for the past 30 years, the Bob Gerbracht Scholarship Award. This award of $1000 is to a graduating high school senior who has submitted work for review to the Scholarship Chair and then is voted on by the PSWC Board. The scholarship candidate must commit to a major in art at an institution of his or her choice, with the $1000 going to the school towards the candidate’s tuition. AMBRIEHL ZEPEDA-RUELAS has been selected to be the Bob Gerbracht Scholarship Award recipient for 2017 and has registered at Porterville College. I will never paint a portrait without thinking and following Bob’s guidelines and procedure. Hanging in his San Francisco studio, handwritten on butcher paper, was a step by step procedure for painting the portrait. In an interview with American Artist Magazine, Bob once said he thought of his students as members of an orchestra; setting up their easels, putting out their paint, selecting their brushes. It gave him pleasure. It gave his student’s order, discipline and the way. – Cynthia Riordan SELF PORTRAIT, PASTEL

The Pastel Society of the West Coast was founded
in 1985 by a handful of dedicated artists from Northern California who had a vision to promote the historic pastel medium. The first Pastels USA National Open Competition was held in 1987. Based in the Sacramento region of California, PSWC has become the second largest pastel society in the United States, with members coast to coast. Each year Pastels USA, our International Open Show attracts over 500 entries. They come from all over North America and as far away as Africa, Turkey and Europe. Awards given amount to over $11,000 each year. Jurors for this prestigious show include artists of the stature of Daniel Greene, Albert Handell, Bob Gerbracht, Doug Dawson, Sally Strand, Duane Wakeham, Margot Schulzke, Richard McKinley Alan Flattmann, and Lorenzo Chavez. The exhibition draws over a thousand art patrons each year. PSWC is honored to be at Sense of Place Galley, Fresno, CA this year. Past venues for Pastels USA include the Art Museum of Los Gatos, the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, CA, and the Haggin Museum in Stockton, CA. Because of PSWC’s reputation, some of the best pastelists in the country are signature members. Signature Status is awarded for acceptance into three Pastels USA Exhibitions or two Pastels USA Exhibits and one award in the PSWC Membership Show. The Distinguished Pastellist rank is awarded to members who receive awards in three Open Shows in a five year period. The Pastel LaureateTM Hall of Fame designation for lifetime achievement in the medium has been awarded thus far to Albert Handell, Daniel Greene, Bob Gerbracht, Margot Schulzke, Marbo Barnard, Duane Wakeham, and Richard McKinley, The current PSWC Board of Directors is dedicated to continuing the momentum started 28 years ago. Besides sponsoring two exhibitions a year, The Pastel Society of the West Coast holds two membership meetings a year featuring demonstrations by accomplished pastelists. We publish a newsletter three times a year providing the latest information on pastel technique, exhibition opportunities and member accomplishments. PSWC also sponsors a scholarship competition each year for high school graduates who will be majoring in art. Given the strong leadership PSWC has enjoyed in its first twenty eight years, we are confident that this society will be around for many years to come. Membership in The Pastel Society of the West Coast is open to all artists working in the historic pastel medium. Information about PSWC including how to become a member can be found on our web site, www.pswc.ws
